Need two sets of bookmarks

I have some bookmarks that I want to share with other people and some that I do not want to share. Is there an easy way to maintain two sets of bookmarks and yet sync them (I currently use .Mac) between my two Macs? Ideally, they would be kept in separate files, but I don't know whether Safari or OmniWeb or Firefox support this.

Hi Joe
None of the browsers natively support multiple bookmark files. However, you may find what you are looking for via Bookdog. I suggest you click on the Support link on the product page, asking the developer whether multiple synched sets are doable with their product.
Post back and let me know what you discover.

  • I have two sets of bookmarks, one under "Bookmarks Toolbar" and one under "Bookmarjs Menu," and they are not totally similar. What's going on?

    I use Bookmarks toolbar. When I want to save a site, the browser asks which folder to place it in; however I have two somewhat different sets of bookmarks that Firefox stores, and I'm never sure which set is the one being saved to. I have only one profile, checked that. Firefox 4.0 is an upgrade from 3.6.16.

    * The Bookmarks Toolbar folder stores the bookmarks that you see on the (View > Toolbars >) Bookmarks Toolbar.
    * The Bookmarks Menu folder stores bookmarks that you see in the Bookmarks menu and create via "Bookmarks > Bookmark This Page" or "Bookmark This Link" in the right click context menu.
    * The Unsorted Bookmarks folder stores that bookmarks that are created by clicking the star at the right end of the location bar.
    Clicking the star in the location bar will bookmark the page in the "Unsorted Bookmarks" folder and the star turns yellow (blue on Mac) to show that.<br />
    Bookmarks > "Bookmark This Page" (Ctrl+D or use Alt+B) will bookmark the page in the Bookmarks Menu folder (you need to confirm that).

  • What is the best way to switch between two sets of bookmarks, say 'work' and 'private'?

    I want to use to sets of bookmarks, so that when I'm working, I'm not distracted by my non-work bookmarks and vice versa. For the last couple of months, I've been using two user accounts to achieve this, but it's a bit of a PITA. Links from other applications, like Thunderbird mail are opened in the default profile. This means when I'm not at work and I click a link in an email, a new window is opened with my Firefox work profile.
    All I need is a trick or an extension to quickly switch bookmark sets. Or a way to switch profiles without opening a new Firefox window. Any ideas?

    You can't get Firefox to work as you are explaining you want. The Default Profile can't be changed on-the-fly to the Profile you are currently using. That message "Firefox is already running ..." comes up due to you or "something" trying to open a 2nd (or subsequent) Profile, unless that '''-no-remote''' command was used to open the additional Profile. And '''-no-remote''' won't work to open the Default Profile without causing issues with how Windows works with "calling up" the Default Browser.
    In response to your last statement - '''''"To separate my work and private stuff I only need to change the contents of my bookmarks bar, so I hoped there was some trick to maintain to groups of bookmarks."'''''
    This extension will allow you to change the Bookmarks Toolbar folder while you are using Firefox.
    https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/set-as-bookmarks-toolbar-folde/
    I just installed that extension and verified that it still works in Firefox 35.
    There is a context menu item added for '''"Set as Bookmarks Toolbar Folder"'''' that appears when the Bookmarks Menu Bar drop-down menu is used (not in the Library window or the Bookmarks Sidebar). That menu item appears when you right-click a folder in the Bookmarks Menu folder. It doesn't appear with the "Bookmarks Toolbar" folder or the "Unsorted Bookmarks" folder - only a folder that is in the "Bookmarks Menu".
    That should "solve" wanting to have two different settings for the Bookmarks Toolbar, but the Default Profile "thing" is still an issue for what you are trying to accomplish. I don't "see a fix" for that - without resorting to a 2nd Window User Account which is what I thought you were referring to by "I've been using two user accounts to achieve this" in your initial posting.
    And since the Menu Bar is hidden by default these days, you can use '''Alt''' then '''B''' to open the Bookmarks drop-down from the "revealed" Menu Bar so you can access that '''"Set as Bookmarks Toolbar Folder"''' menu item - without having to show the Menu Bar all the time.
    ''BTW, using "accounts" in lieu of "Profiles" can be confusing when discussing Firefox Profiles.''

  • One computer, two users, two sets of bookmarks

    My wife and I have separate computers but when we travel we use just one. We would both like to have our own bookmarks which can be kept separately. How can this be achieved?

    Separate Windows Logon User Accounts, or separate Firefox Profiles.

  • I need to combine 2 sets of bookmarks in one computer. One set was just replaced -- how do I get it back and add it to the second?

    I am combining the contents of 2 computers into one new computer. I did a file transfer from the first, which transferred all of my bookmarks and passwords; when I did a file transfer from the second, it replaced the bookmarks and passwords that had already transferred. I want BOTH sets together as one Bookmark list in my new computer. How do I find the set that has just been replaced and add it to the second transfer?
    One last thing -- I can still access the computer from the second transfer, but the first has been wiped clean. I wish I had known that the bookmarks would be replaced before I did the second transfer.

    Keep this in mind, when you are restoring a JSON backup it will '''replace''' existing bookmarks (same thing with swapping in a places.sqlite file). When you '''import''' in HTML format, those bookmarks will be '''appended''' to the existing bookmarks.
    I think what you need to do is to recover the backup from just before you attempted to add the second set of bookmarks - hope that Firefox automatically backed them up before you replaced them (very strong probability that was done '''if''' you closed Firefox between the two restorations, but if you didn't close and restart Firefox between those actions it may not have happened). That should give you the bookmarks from the first PC that is wiped clean. - https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Lost+Bookmarks#w_restoring-bookmark-backups
    Then do an '''export''' into HTML format on the 2nd PC that is still operational. '''Import''' that bookmarks.html into the PC you are working on, to add them to the existing bookmarks. <br />
    Bookmarks > Organize Bookmarks -> Import & Backup - Export HTML... - to a USB stick <br />
    '''''then''''' <br />
    Bookmarks > Organize Bookmarks -> Import & Backup - Import HTML... - from file on that USB stick

  • My Airport wireless is working for my two MacBook Pros and my daughter's iPod, but our iPad, Iphone and other iPod all say they need to set up an Airport Base Station but do not have the proper software.  I'm not sure what to do to remedy this situation.

    My Airport wireless is working for my two MacBook Pros and my daughter's iPod, but our iPad, Iphone and other iPod all say they need to set up an Airport Base Station but do not have the proper software.  I'm not sure what to do to remedy this situation.

    This might sound like a silly question, but are you sure the iOS devices (iPhone, iPad, iPod touch etc.) are still trying to connect to the same network from your own Airport router, as the MacBook Pros are? If you tap Settings on them, is the network name next to where it says Wi-Fi, the right one?
    I've got a weird feeling that either in the past couple of days, a neighbour got an Airport device and hasn't set it up yet (causing your iOS devices to try to help), or that perhaps there's an issue with your Airport router and they're noticing it and trying to help out, while for whatever reason, Airport Utility isn't opening itself on the MacBook Pros like it normally should if there's a problem.
    If you open Airport Utility on one of the MacBook Pros, does it report any problems with your Airport device, and can you view/edit the settings on it?

  • Two Mac users, one set of bookmarks?

    Is it possible to have a set of Safari bookmarks sync'd between two users?
    What I mean is can I have two users both using the same set of bookmarks? so when i switch between users, any bookmarks from user 1 also come u in user2 bookmarks on Safari?
    I now export/ import is possible but not what I am after.
    Neil

    Yep, that has done what I want, great, thanks
    having it web based with a username etc to log into an external is not ideal...and it is also another app to have running on the machine in the background, but certainly a lot better than trying to sync them manually
    Cheers

  • Changed iPhone name, now have two sets of iCloud bookmarks

    Hi,
    I recently restored my iPhone 5 and also decided to change the name from the default.  I now have two sets of icloud bookmarks, one from the old iPhone name and one under the new name.  This is present on both my iPhone and my Macbook Prp.  How do I get rid of the iCloud bookmarks under the old iPhone name?
    Thanks,

    Well, I restored my iPhone again and used the first name, then deleted icloud from the phone.  Restored again with the second name and that got rid of the duplicate phone bookmarks.  I did the same with my Macbook Pro but I still have the bookmarks left from that one, even though it was the same name.  I'm trying to find a way to just wipe everything from iCloud and start fresh.

  • I went to the full screen and don't like it and need to know how to get back to what I had. Also, is there a good way to set up bookmarks? Like in a column on the left or right side? Thank you.

    Just press F11 on your keyboard to exit full screen mode.

  • Two iPods, Two sets of ratings, one music folder?

    Here’s something which I’ve been failing to do, and about which I and can’t find any appropriate info in any forums. It seems like a very obvious thing to want to do…
    We have one computer and two iPods. Most of our Playlists are ratings-driven. Eg. “500 3+star tracks that haven’t been played this month”. My girlfriend rates music differently to me. I don’t want her ratings affecting my playlists and visa versa.
    The only way (as far as I can tell) to have one file of music and two sets of ratings is to use two libraries. This is achieved by holding down shift when starting iTunes and then choosing whichever library you want before syncing the iPod. So far so good.
    The problem is, whenever I add new music I can only add it into one library at a time; the other library knows nothing about it. The same applies if I delete anything (the other library thinks the files still exist). The only way around this is to add/delete twice, which is a faff. Podcasts need to be downloaded twice as well. Also, I think, if I add a CD of music and then go into the other library and try and add it again (or point iTunes to the new mp3 files) it will create duplicates. In any case, it’s a lot of messing about.
    So, any ideas on how I can have one big music folder and two iPods with different ratings without doubling my iTunes ‘admin’ time?
    Any advice would be graetfully appreciated.

    Thanks very much for your reply, but it doesn't look like there's a suitable option for me at the moment. I only want one music folder and I want all music accessible to both users/iPods, just with independent ratings. There appears to be a number of ways of doing this but none without a lot of duplication of effort. I have 95Gb of music which is constantly being added to and deleted from as buy new music and remove duplicates etc. I put a fair amount of time into refining ratings and playlists in order to improve the quality of the stuff I listen to and I don't want to start making lists of the things I add/delete and then have to log into another iTunes session to repeat the exercise. It seems a shame that iTunes can't offer a practical solution to the notion that two people might have slightly (not completely) different tastes in music. I'm certain this sort of thing will have to be looked at in future, especially now there are plenty of iPod families out there.
    Thanks again to all of the above for your replies.

    You can continue to share the same iTunes account ID with your daughter and set up a separate iCloud account with a different ID.
    => is this a different iCloud account for each device?  I thought iCloud account ID had to match some iTunes account ID, for which we only have one i Tunes account?
    You need to set up a separate iCloud account for each person that does not want to share their iCloud data.  If you share an iCloud account with someone, any data you both sync with the shared account is merged, and you end up with each other's data on your device(s).  If, for example, you owned two devices and someone else in the family also owned two devices, you would both want your own iCloud accounts, and you would each set up your personal iCloud account on the two devices you own.  In other words, you want a separate iCloud account for each person to be used on the devices they own.  Each iCloud account has to have a separate Apple ID.  The ID does not need to be the same as the ID used for iTunes.  Many families perfer to share the same iTunes account/ID, but maintain separate iCloud accounts with different IDs to keep there data separated.

    => what ID, iTunes?  So I can have a separate iCloud account "only" ID which I also assume must be some [valid] email address?  The children currently do not have email accounts anywhere.
    Yes, I was referring to the iTunes ID not needing to be the same as the ID used for iCloud.  In order to set up an Apple ID your children will need to have a valid email address that can be verified by Apple.  Apple requires this so they have a way of contacting the owner if there is a problem with the account, such as when you may need to reset the password on the account.  When you set up the ID, Apple will send a verification email to this email account and you will need to click on the verificating link in the email to complete the process.  If they don't currently have an email account you can just set one up with gmail or another free email hosting service.  They don't have to use the account but you will need it to set up the ID.

  • Can I sync my iPhone and my wife's iPhone calenders through the same iCloud account? Or do I need to set up 2 different apple id's anc iCloud's

    Can I sync my iPhone and my wife's iPhone calenders through the same iCloud account? Or do I need to set up 2 different apple id's and iCloud's

    No, I would recommed to use two separate iCloud accounts for mail, calendars, notes, reminders, contacts etc.

  • Is there any database parameters we need to set when using DBMS_PARALLE_EXECUTE?

    Hi,
    I am using dbms_parallel_execute package to do some process, I call a procedure to do the some tasks and insert data using the chunks by sql. Here is my code, I am calling p_process procedure, I am using 11g 11.2.0.3.0 - 64 bit  on windows server.
    DBMS_PARALLEL_EXECUTE.CREATE_TASK ('process a');
      DBMS_PARALLEL_EXECUTE.CREATE_CHUNKS_BY_SQL (
          task_name => 'process a',
         sql_stmt => 'SELECT startid, endid FROM chng_chunks',
         by_rowid => FALSE);
            dbms_parallel_execute.run_task
            ( task_name      => 'process a',
              sql_stmt       => 'begin P_process( :start_id, :end_id ); end;',
              language_flag  => DBMS_SQL.NATIVE,
             parallel_level => 24 );
    This code runs very fast on a one database and I can see it uses lots of cpus but it runs very slow on a copy of the same database on another server which has more cpus and memory. I compare v$parameter vlues and those are pretty much  identical between databases. I checked the disk spaces and both servers has plenty of free space on disks.
    Now my question is, is there any other parameters that we need to set/check when using dbms_parallel_execute package.
    Thanks in advance.
    gg

    I don't get this. Ever. Why developers insist on comparing server1 with server2, simply because their code is running on both.
    It is like comparing the athletic ability of two persons, arguing that h/w wise they are the same (i.e. human), and both have green eyes (your same software). And as because these are all the same, both persons should be able to run the 100m in the same time.
    Yes, the analogy is silly.. as is the warped concept amongst many developers that server1 and server2 should exhibit the same performance when running the same code.
    It. Does. Not. Work. Like. That.
    Want to know why server2 is exhibiting the performance it does when running your code?
    Do that by ignoring server1 as it is NOT RELEVANT.
    Do that by examining the workloads and resource usage of server2, and the run and wait states of your code on server2.

  • How do I transfer all photos from my Imac, IPhoto version 7.1.5, to another Imac, IPhoto version 9.2, but keep the two sets of photos separate

    How do I transfer all photos from my Imac, IPhoto version 7.1.5, to another Imac, IPhoto version 9.2, but keep the two sets of photos separate

    You need to clarify what you are asking.
    An iphoto installation has two major parts: 1. The application or program - that's the software and 2. The Library - that's where your actual pictures are.
    So when you say:
    I want to keep using the old Iphoto program on the new Imac.  There is already an IPhoto program on the new Imac but I do not want to add or delete from that one.
    It sounds like you want to move the application and not the Library. Most folks want to move the Library, and it makes no sense to have two versions of the application on your mac.

  • I have firefox on 2 computers and there are different bookmarks on the 2 computers. If I sync them, will I have on set of bookmarks that includes both?

    I have 2 Macs, a Mac pro tower and a Macbook pro. Since I use both computers, I have 2 sets of bookmarks with some overlap between the two. I would like to sync them so that I can access bookmarks that I created on one computer on the other one. The question is, if I perform a sync, will the two sets become a single set including all the bookmarks on both machines or will I end up erasing one of the sets? Also, if I have the same bookmark on both machines, will I end up with redundant bookmarks? Thanks for your help.

    Ideally the bookmarks will merge, however if there are duplicates on either machines, I do not know where these bookmarks will sync to, I have not tested this yet.
    Redundant bookmarks should be removed.
