Need ugly boot message

I'm new to the mac pro and I have to run WinXP XP is up and configured but but have an issue now that I've installed an Adaptec RAID card.
I've installed an Adaptec RAID contoller in Slot 2. It is connected only to disks 3 and 4, not to the boot disk. The Mac boots into OS X with no problem. Using the diagnostics util, I can see the card reported in the PCI slot.
The problem is that when I select WinXP for boot, the system hangs with a black screen and a blinking cursor even before Windows gets a chance to boot. The Adaptec manual says i need to press Ctrl-A to get to the RAID controller configuration. However, I'm never prompted for the Ctrl-A and when I simply press Ctrl-A on boot, the keys seem to be ignored.
I worry that the RAID controller is taking over the boot sequence but I can't override this since I can't get to the controller config util. How does one access the ugly boot messages on a Mac? Thanks.

The card is an Adaptec 3405. I've got two 500 Gig Seagates attached to it.
I didn't want XP dealing with the RAID until I had the bootcamp stuff all working. So I XP installed first. I'm very experienced in XP, just not the Mac.
The drives are connected directly to the RAID card via SATA cables. I modified the Mac drive bays 3 & 4 by unscrewing the SATA+power connecters at the end of the drive to make room for the SATA connectors going to the card. Drive power is tapped from the power connector in the 2nd CD bay.
I tried not attacheing the drives but no change. Thanks for your help on this.

  • [SOLVED] how to prevent Xorg from clearing boot messages in scrollback

I have an updated Arch install with MATE and LightDM. LightDM autologin is enabled, so I normally boot directly to my desktop. I like seeing the messages that flash by during boot, so I deleted the word "quiet" from the linux line in my grub.cfg. Because I want all the messages to still be there after flashing by (in case I want to scroll through them later), I followed the advice here https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Di … t_messages and I also increased the scrollback buffer and enabled early KMS start.
Despite all the above, I can only scroll back to the beginning of the boot messages if I boot into non-graphical mode (e.g., by adding "systemd.unit=multi-user.target" to GRUB command line). If I allow a normal boot to my destkop and THEN go to non-graphical mode with "sudo systemctl isolate multi-user.target" to look at the boot messages, I notice that I cannot scroll back very far at all--most of the messages that flashed by during boot are gone. Therefore, it seems to me that either lightDM or Xorg is resetting the scrollback buffer and erasing all but the last few boot messages.
So, how do I tell LightDM or Xorg (whichever one is the culprit) *not* to clear the scrollback buffer, so that when I get out of graphical mode and into non-graphical mode the boot messages are all still there?

Since the answer to my original question seems to be "it is not possible," I will make this my last post to prevent the thread from going off-topic.
I came up with a simple workaround that (almost) recreates the old /var/boot/log:
    1) put "quiet" on grub2's kernel command line so that only* [FAIL] messages show up, so that I don't have to deal with the scrollback buffer
    2) create a startup script with the following contents (script or at least the setterm command must run as root because the setterm command needs to be able to read from /dev/vcs1):
    #!/bin/bash
    # this script will dump the text of tty1 to /var/log/boot, with same formatting as on the screen
    export TERM=xterm
    setterm -dump 1 -file /var/log/boot
    exit 0
    * Unfortunately, even in quiet mode grub2 starts printing all the boot status messages to screen once it encounters a [FAIL]. Therefore, if the [FAIL] occurs early enough in the boot process, the beginning of the messages will scroll off the screen and the workaround won't work. I spun off my two questions related to this nuisance into their own threads:
    a) How to make grub2 actually only print [FAIL] messages during boot? https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=184702
    b) How to print the contents of console's scrollback buffer to a file? https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 9#p1439359
I hope I can figure out how to do one of the above, because then the workaround would be perfect.
    Thanks for the help, guys!

  • Issues with passing boot messages to Plymouth - absolutely no results!

Lately I've made it my little project to fancy up my box with a nice Plymouth boot screen with scrolling boot messages.  I've found the following two pages that give a guide to setting up such a Plymouth theme:
Plymouth: Create your own splash screen with scrolling boot messages
Plymouth pulsating crunchbang logo with boot messages and progress bar
I quickly realized when I tried to make the system changes needed to send boot messages to Plymouth that my system doesn't have either  /usr/share/initramfs-tools/scripts/functions (which I believe is very outdated) or /lib/lsb/init-functions which is brought up in the #! forums.  I'm assuming that #! uses Linux Standard Base and Arch does not - so I went looking for the files I needed.
The two most likely candidates to me seem to be /lib/initcpio/init_functions and /lib/initcpio/functions.  However, changing either one of these files to contain
    if [ -x /bin/plymouth ]; then
    /bin/plymouth update --status="$@"
    fi
or its equivalent produces absolutely no results on reboot, even after running
    mkinitcpio -p linux
Are these the correct files?  Or am I barking up the wrong tree?  I've already tested my Plymouth theme by running the Plymouth daemon and opening up a splash screen in X and using Plymouth's --update=<string> option, and everything works great.  I'm kind of at my wit's end, and would rather not have to install LSB to get this working.  Has anyone else been successful with this, or perhaps knows which direction to point me in?
Thanks in advance for any advice!!

    Bump.
    ^  No, only joking!
I'm posting again to say that I have found /etc/rc.d/functions - and this seems to be the file I'm looking for.  Maybe someone could confirm that before I start mucking around with a file that looks a little to easy to mess up?  And maybe perhaps someone knows and easier way to edit this for sending messages to Plymouth other then putting something similar to
    if [ -x /bin/plymouth ]; then
    /bin/plymouth update --status="$@"
    fi
into every function (such as status(), stat_fail(), stat_done(), etc.)  I see that /etc/rc.d/functions is called by /etc/rc.sysinit.  Could I possibly change rc.sysinit to be
    #!/bin/bash
    # /etc/rc.sysinit
    . /etc/rc.conf
    # Call functions for Plymouth
    . /etc/rc.d/plymouth_functions
    . /etc/rc.d/functions
    ## Truncated ##
And then create a /etc/rc.d/plymouth_functions file very similar to /etc/rc.d/functions, except running "plymouth update --status=$@" instead of echo commands?  Then it would be a simple matter of using gEdit's Replace tool (i.e.  "status() ==> status() & plymouth_status()") to edit /etc/rc.sysinit.
Any ideas on whether or not this would work?

Thanks for posting this - really appreciate it.
    1. Enabled 'early KMS start' by adding radeon to MODULES line in /etc/mkinitcpio.conf:
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/KM … _KMS_start
This was needed to stop console is being reset by the graphics module in Late KMS Start (default) thus clearing boot messages before module was loaded.
OK. So I guess early KMS is not my problem .
    2. Change TTYVTDisallocate to no in [email protected] to stop boot message clearing:
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Di … t_Messages
This does not seem like the right way to do this but I'm not entirely sure what is. I think that what is in that directory should be just a symlink.
The recommended way to edit unit files is at https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Sy … unit_files. However, I'm not clear quite how to apply that in this case. What I'm currently trying is
    $ cat /etc/systemd/system/[email protected]/TTYVTDisallocate-BLOCK.conf
    [Service]
    TTYVTDisallocate=no
However this will affect all VTs generated from the template. Does anybody know if it is bad to have TTYVTDisallocate set to false for tty{2,3,...}?
EDIT: Or are the other VTs generated from something else? It makes no sense to me they'd be generated from the template in /usr/lib/systemd/system since surely TTYVTDisallocate is inappropriate for the other ttys? Doesn't disallocating it make it unavailable for login etc.? Or have I misunderstood?
    3. Increased scrollback for console by adding fbcon=scrollback:300k to /boot/syslinux/syslinux.cfg.
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Scrollback_buffer
Did you also append xxxfb as the wiki says? If so, what did you use? I'm confused because it mentions the name of your video driver but I'm not sure what that is since this is not concerned with X.

  • Color boot messages?

How do you get those nice color boot messages such as you see in the kamikaze kernels? Thanks.
I've just compiled an rt kernel (see http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?d … ns=&SeB=nd), but I'd really like to get the helpful color messages at boot-time that I was getting with kamikaze. Thanks.

    buttons wrote:This?
Well, I compiled an rt kernel adding in this patch, and it is some improvement over the default: kernel messages are highlighted, so they stand out from other info. However, kamikaze displays a whole slew of color combinations, apparently depending on the type of boot message.
I've written the person who maintains the kamikaze (and now zen-sources) ebuilds in AUR to see if he knows how to get this effect. I looked in the kamikaze config, and there may be some indication there, but I wasn't sure what I was looking at. When I tried what I thought was the pertinent portion of the kamikaze character device definition, it didn't do anything, so I think there's some other option that I need to enable.
If anyone knows anything about this, I'd be grateful. As fast as boot messages scroll by, it's really helpful to have them differentiated by color.
    Thanks.

  • Need to boot my PowerMac G5 from a CD - but It won't

Hi need to boot a PowerMac G5 2 GHz Dual Core from a CD/DVD so I can create a RAID Mirror set. I do not have my original CDs since I lost them, not I have an external drive to boot from.
    So far I tried:
Booting from my MacPro DVD - got a kernel panic
Booting from my PowerMac 2x2GHz DVD - got a kernel panic
Booting from my PowerMac 2x2GHz DVD Apple Hardware test - got a message AHD do not support this system or something along those lines.
Booting from my PowerMac 2x2GHz DVD while holding option at startup got a circle with a line across.
Is there a way to get replacement DVDs? What Apple Original Install DVDs will boot my Mac?
    Thanks in advance
    Message was edited by: A.Tzekin

    Hi-
Using OS disc's that shipped with models other than your model of G5 will not work (as you have found out).
Contact Apple about replacements, or, buy a Retail version of Tiger.

Can I purchase Mountain Lion and make a flash drive bootable? I do not want to install it on my Macbook Pro. I have Snow Leopard on my Macbook Pro now, and due to my hard drive needing repair, I need to boot off of another source, like my flash drive. I am in Paris and my Snow Leopard DVD is in Texas.

Mac OS X has a built-in disk diagnostic and repair program called fsck or file system consistency check. Here’s how to verify and repair your startup disk with fsck.  As soon as you hear the startup tone, press and hold Command-S on the keyboard. Keep holding down those keys until you see a black screen with white lettering. This is called “booting into Single User Mode.”  As the Mac boots in this mode, the screen reports each step of the process. The line should end in root#.  Right after the root# prompt, enter the following: /sbin/fsck -fy
If repairing the disk in single user mode fails, it means one of two things. Either your hard drive itself is failing (a hardware failure), or the directory damage on your hard drive is beyond the capability of the built-in repair procedures in OS X.

  • Need to boot broken Mac-Mini using retail Snow Leopard 10.6 DVD

    Hi,
    In Summary:
    ==========
I have Mac Mini (late 2009) which does not boot anymore and I need to install Snow Leopard using retail DVD (version 10.6). The OS/installer from the DVD does not seem to boot either. I always very much appreciate the efforts of true geeks. So please, any casual beginner, please do not demoralize with something like "cannot be done" etc.
    The complete story:
    ==================
    The start of the problem:
    1. All of a sudden, one fine day, on start up, my Mac Mini strated to shut itself down without no apparent reason to me. When trying to boot, it would show a progress bar for about 5 minutes - I am assuming that was disk-consistency check being performed. My best guess is that right after the use of Carbon-Copy Cloner (but I am not 100% sure) it all strated to happen.
    2. Performed Mac's Disk-Util check and [Verify Volume] used to display "invalid directory item count, should be 31 instead of 29". Surface scan said disk hardware is 100% fine. Volume Repair never worked, since OS X was installed on the primary disk. I lost the DVDs that came with this Mac Mini, so the option to boot from that DVD and launch Disk Util etc. was not possible.
    TechTool Pro - No Help:
    3. Started googling and had to choose between [TechTool Pro] and [Disk Warrior], opted for TechTool Pro. Tried its bootable DVD only to learn that TechTool Pro cannot fix it. Again, it's surface scan suggested disk hardware is 100% fine. Sent the details to TechTool Pro support team, they couldn't help either after a couple of e-mails+data exchange. (How do I claim my lost money with TechTool Pro - suggestions appreciated as well).
    Googling / Mac Forums:
    4. Started looking into forums, learnt that someone had successfully repaired this problem using Ubuntu 11.04 install DVD (i.e., without installing the Ubuntu, but just using its 'try from DVD' feature). I had that handy, but forgot to disable HFS+ journaling before attempting to fix the problem. Anyway, attempting volume repair that way couldn't fix the problem as well. However this step took away my ability to boot from Mac.
    5. However using Ubuntu's bootable disk, I could access Mac-HDDs contents - and was able to successfully back-up *all* my important data.
    6. Googled and learnt that just attempting to boot using Ubuntu DVD can take away ability to boot using Mac bootable media - possibly due to EFI internals. Suspecting EFI is now corrupt, I tried other 'hacks' like:
6.1 eEFIt Boot Disk - which does not work at all,
6.2 Empire EFI w/ Chameleon - not sure how to proceed with options presented - trying either does not work,
6.3 Super GRUB2 - boots fine, but attempting to boot from Mac-HDD fails after a couple of seconds,
6.4 Boot-132 - boots fine, prompt asks for input, but then I cannot eject/replace the DVD due to Mac-Mini (lack of) design,
      6.5 Ubuntu 11.04 / 11.10 - still boots fine - just that I cannot go into Mac-OS-X from here,
6.6 TechTool Pro bootable DVD - which used to boot fine earlier stopped to boot.
As you can see, none worked successfully. So I didn't yet try other popular rescue media - as I suspect that is not the direction I need to go into.
    >> Looks like most of my problems are due to the fact that I have Mac-Mini which does not allow eject/replace of DVD from command prompt / out side of Mac-OS-X.
    7. Tried emptying EFI partition, playing with EFI/Mac-OS partitions boot flags, Zapping the PRAM, nothing still allows me to boot either from Mac-HDD or any Mac-Bootable-DVD.
    Current State:
    8. Now while boot time, Mac displays a gray screen for a few seconds, and then a blinking prompt on black background. That's it!
Snow Leopard 10.6 Retail Install DVD:
    9. Went to Mac store and bought this DVD only to witness that I can't boot from it as well. (This is a huge shocker, how is Apple able to sell these DVDs if these don't work on genuine MacMini itself. After all we are able to boot from and install Windows/Linux on a variety of Machines).
I am hoping for a very small step/fix that I am missing, since I can still see and access all Mac-HDD contents after booting from Ubuntu bootable DVD. However I am prepared for a good amount of exercise as well - assuming someone posts a valid/verified fix.
    Things available right now:
    ==========================
    A. Genuine Mac-Mini (Late 2009) who lost it's ability to boot either from its HDD or Mac-bootable DVDs (TechTools Pro, Mac OS X retail DVD)
    B. Mac OS X 10.6 Retail DVD
    C. NOT AVAILABLE - DVD that came with this Mac-Mini
    D. Variety of rescue DVDs, listed in section 6 above
    E. Another machine/PC with Ubuntu 11.04 - giving me ability to access internet
    Thanks for reading.

I had a similar discussion recently with another user.
Your Mac mini (late 2009) originally came with Mac OS X 10.6.2 build 10A432 or build 10C2234 see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1159 it would have come with an original install disc specific to your model of Mac which you could use to run Disk Utility from or to do a complete reinstall.
The retail boxed copy of Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) was originally intended for older Macs which had previously come with Mac OS X 10.5 or 10.4. It would have on it a version of Mac OS X 10.6 or 10.6.1 which would be able to boot these older Macs, but had no need to boot newer Macs which were released after the launch of Mac OS X 10.6 since all those newer Macs already shipped with their own discs.
So it is normal that the retail boxed Snow Leopard installer does not work on your model Mac mini. You should be using the one that shipped with your Mac mini instead. I am guessing you have lost it.
Assuming you have lost the Mac mini original disc, I can suggest the following options to try and workaround this.
If you have another Mac, an older Mac, one that will be bootable using the retail Snow Leopard install disc you have, you could do either of the following.
Connect an empty external GUID partitioned hard disk to this other Mac
Boot from the retail Snow Leopard installer
Install on to the external disk
Once the install is complete, update it using the combo update not the one via Software Update to Mac OS X 10.6.8. This will add all the newer drivers needed to allow it to work on your newer Mac mini. You can download this combo update from here http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399
You can now disconnect the external drive and connect it to your Mac mini and boot from it by holding down the Option key when you turn the Mac mini on
or a similar process if you want to wipe the Mac mini and reinstall directly on to it
Boot the Mac mini in FireWire Target Disk Mode (see http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1661 )
Connect the Mac mini as an external hard disk to the other older Mac
Boot from the retail Snow Leopard installer
Install on to the external disk
Once the install is complete, update it using the combo update not the one via Software Update to Mac OS X 10.6.8. This will add all the newer drivers needed to allow it to work on your newer Mac mini. You can download this combo update from here http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399
You can now disconnect the Mac mini and boot from it as normal
Note: While the Mac mini is connected in FireWire Target Disk mode to the second Mac, you could backup (if you don't already have a backup) any files you need to retrieve.
If you don't have a suitable second Mac you may have to either borrow someone else's, or get the help of an Apple Store if one is in your area.

Spoke too soon. It just happened when I was buying a song from iTunes (I had just clicked on "buy this song") and the restart screen came up. But Firefox was running in the background (after I already tried uninstalling and reinstalling it). Any help appreciated. Thank you! Here's the log:

  • Need to publish message from database to a JMS Queue using Java

I need to publish messages to a Websphere JMS Queue whenever any changes happen on a particular column of a table in oracle 11g. For that I have written a trigger on that particular table which in turn will invoke one java procedure. I have written the java procedure using a standalone java class and uploaded the java class as a schema object. While executing the procedure it is throwing error as it is not able to instantiate some of the java classes. I don't know how to provide the reference of different jar files while executing the java class. Can anyone help me on this.

    Welcome to the forum!

    >
Clarify your statement. First you say 'standalone java class' but then you talk about instantiating java 'classes' and referencing 'different jar files'. If you are executing your Java class inside Oracle then any Java classes that your java class is referencing also have to be loaded into Oracle or it won't be able to reference or execute them.
How do you plan to ' publish messages to a Websphere JMS Queue '? Where is this queue you are talking about?
Why are you using a Java procedure and class instead of PL/SQL?
What is your 4 digit Oracle version (result of SELECT * FROM V$VERSION)?

  • [Solved] [Xorg+KMS+Intel] Can't see login console / boot messages!

    Hi,
My problem is that using an Intel video card (with KMS) after latest Xorg 1.8 update, I can't see boot messagges and the login console anymore.
I've just noticed that after last Xorg update I can't access anymore to runlevel 3 on boot.
I've got an Intel video card so KMS is enabled by default (and mandatory).
I always used SLiM as a display manager, configured through /etc/inittab to go to runlevel 5 on boot:
    # /etc/inittab
    # Runlevels:
    # 0 Halt
    # 1(S) Single-user
    # 2 Not used
    # 3 Multi-user
    # 4 Not used
    # 5 X11
    # 6 Reboot
    ## Only one of the following two lines can be uncommented!
    # Boot to console
    #id:3:initdefault:
    # Boot to X11
    id:5:initdefault:
    rc::sysinit:/etc/rc.sysinit
    rs:S1:wait:/etc/rc.single
    rm:2345:wait:/etc/rc.multi
    rh:06:wait:/etc/rc.shutdown
    su:S:wait:/sbin/sulogin -p
    # -8 options fixes umlauts problem on login
    c1:2345:respawn:/sbin/agetty -8 38400 tty1 linux
    c2:2345:respawn:/sbin/agetty -8 38400 tty2 linux
    c3:2345:respawn:/sbin/agetty -8 38400 tty3 linux
    c4:2345:respawn:/sbin/agetty -8 38400 tty4 linux
    c5:2345:respawn:/sbin/agetty -8 38400 tty5 linux
    c6:2345:respawn:/sbin/agetty -8 38400 tty6 linux
    # Hypervisor Virtual Console for Xen and KVM
    #h0:2345:respawn:/sbin/agetty -8 38400 hvc0 linux
    ca::ctrlaltdel:/sbin/shutdown -t3 -r now
    # Example lines for starting a login manager
    #x:5:respawn:/usr/bin/xdm -nodaemon
    #x:5:respawn:/usr/sbin/gdm -nodaemon
    #x:5:respawn:/usr/bin/kdm -nodaemon
    x:5:respawn:/usr/bin/slim >& /dev/null
To enable runlevel 3 at boot,  I commented the id:5:initdefault: and the x:5:respawn:/usr/bin/slim >& /dev/null lines and uncommented id:3:initdefault:.
Now, during boot, the last thing I see is Loading UDev modules..., then the screen becomes dark gray and I can't see any other boot messages (actually this appened also before, after xorg update).
The problem is that before slim started but now I can't see any login console.
I also figured out that typing my username, password and then startx, starts X normally, so the problem is just that I can't see the tty console anymore.
Once I am in X I can switch to ttys normally.
    What can I do?
I just wanted to get rid of slim and start X automatically after console login but I can't see the console login!
I hope to have been clear enough, thanks for your help!

Well, it seems I spoke too early. It doesn't work as expected at every startup, sometimes I still have the black screen.
    Now I'm trying with:

that seems to work, but I just tested it one time and I'm starting to think that screen blanking happens randomly...
Any hint is more than welcomed.
After a few reboots, I can confirm this workaround seems to work.
This is weird indeed as I don't have any SVIDEO-1 interface listed by xrandr -q, but still.

The only problem is that now boot lasts a lot of time  and, between UDev modules loading and disks checking, I have to wait for at least 30 seconds with a black screen and a central white dash flashing.
    Anyone experiencing the same thing?

  • Satellite C850-1CF and Win 8 - need to boot from CD

    Hello,
I need to boot from a CD on my C850-1CF which came with win8 preinstalled.
F12 is not presented at boot time. I understand this is because of UEFI.
To boot from a CD, what should I do (change boot to legacy ?). If so, how do I revert back to UEFI (Win8 does not start if boot mode is set to legacy).
    Pierre

    Hello
What you must do at first is to perform a complete shutdown .
After doing this start your notebook and press F12 to enter boot menu. There is option Enter Setup. Choose this option and enter BIOS settings.
After doing this follow instructions described on http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/TSB2B03F30002R01.htm and http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/TSB2C03F80002R01.htm
