Need walk thru for backing up Leopard/Windows systems

I have Leopard/Windows preinstalled on my intel 250Gb Imac (installed by seller of the Mac). I am tech unsavvy and would appreciate a step by step walk thru of how to back up both systems onto a single 500Gb external hard drive (assuming I am using CCC and Winclone). I am particularly confused about partitioning the external drive for this purpose. Thanks to any patient reader who can help.

No need to partition the external drive; just make sure it is formatted as Mac OS Extended using Disk Utility. Then start up CCC and clone using the default settings with the source being your main drive and the target being the external (this may take awhile). This will give you an identical clone of your main drive. Then you can run Winclone, which will copy your Windows partition to a file on whatever Mac drive that you choose. You will not be able to run Windows from the cloned file, but could use it to restore your Windows partition.

  • Need simple directions for backing up manually

In preparation for upgrading to Leopard, I am in the process of doing a really good backup of all the important things on my hd. I am backing up to an external hd, but for the moment I am doing it manually, not wanting to use backup software. (I will get some in the future, but for now, I really want to learn to do it manually).
How do I do this, keeping my songs in their respective play lists? Do I just export one playlist at a time, along with the whole music library? I do use the library there in the application, right? Or is their another one I should be using in the home folder or somewhere? I obviously need this explained really simply.
    Many thanks in advance.
    Jane

Thank you very much. I appreciate the simple, easy to understand answer. I try to keep songs backed up to cd's, but they get kind of scattered. I plan to upgrade to Leopard, and my big fear is that suddenly everything will disappear. That is why I want a copy of everything on an external hd.
    Many thanks again.

  • Need installation document for OEM 11G on windows 2003(32 bit).

    Hi,
As a part of my project, i need to install the OEM 11G on windows 2003(32 bit) machines and targets also windows 2003. there i need to install again agent 11g(11.1.0.1) and target DB is 10.2.0.4.
I have done the installation of OMS successfully and installed the agent 11g on target as well. i am facing challeges in configuring the database from OMS. i tried couple of options but nothing is working out. Finally i decided to cross check the installation procedure once again with the previously completed ones. could any body share the same.
in breif i have done following.
    1) installed RDBMS 11G on OMS server.
    2) insalled java 1.6.18.
    3) installed WLS 10.3.2
    4) installed the OMS 11G(11.1.0.1)
On agent side i installed agent 11g(11.1.0.1) to monitor a database which is of 10.2.0.4 version.
agent, listeners are reflecting on OMS with up status but DB is showing as "metric collection error". i tried all the possible options like removing and reconfiguring and agent clearing and agent restart etc...but no use. also i in the Oracle installation document, they mentioned as we need to set user equavelence between OMS and agent server but not sure of this, which i have not done. is this compulsary?
Sorry for putting all the things in one single thread.
    Thanks in-advance.
    Regards
    DBA.

Did you check if the database is configured in GC?
    If you can't connect using sqlplus to the user dbsnmp make a connection to the database: alter user dbsnmp identified by <password> account unlock;
In GC go to Targets, All Targets select the DB concerned and hit Configure. Enter the dbsnmp user password etc. After a while you will see the result: DB shows Up (I hope)

  • Walk thru for setting up X-server or VNC on solaris 9

I have a solaris 9 box which i am trying to setup x-server or better still VNC server on, I am having no joy at all and all the doco that i seem to read on it is very cryptic or it more for a redhat distro. Are there any walk throughs for this online? or is anyone willing to step me through it themselves??? any help would be great

I used it a lot on Solaris. Give some examples of the problems you are having. What is showing up in your log file in the .vnc subdirectory. Is anything showing up in ~/.xsession-errors ? I don't believe there should be anything showing up in this log.
It may be something as simple as you haven't specified a windowmanager correctly.
This is what I do. I use fluxbox on all my servers - it, well, rocks :)
In my .profile, I have the following enviornment variable defined:
    DEFAULT_WM=fluxbox
    export DEFAULT_WM
I sometimes play with other window managers and this allows me to change window managers at login.
In my .xinitrc, I have the following:
    -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
    !/bin/sh

In my .vnc subdirectory, I move the default xstartup to something like xstartup-ORIG and then create a symbolic link to ~/.xinitrc.
Assuming I have fluxbox (or whatever WM I plan to use) installed and setup correctly, running 'vncserver -depth 24"' works graphs.
I obviously run vncpasswd prior to running vncserver to setup the vncpasswd - but I think this is unnecessary these days as I think vncserver takes care of checking for that now. Old habits die hard.

  • Differences between 10G intallations for vista and other windows systems

I need Informations about how the installationfiles for vista are differing from the files to install oracle on other windows systems.
And why can't i simply install Oracle Database 10g release 2 (10.2) for Microsoft Windows on a Windows Vista System.
    Message was edited by:

Because Microsoft has changed the API with Vista - the system calls that programs such as Oracle (and Symantec, Word Perfect, and so on) use to performs their operations.
It is a strange thing indeed that things stop working when a program (such as Oracle) asks "fetch me data from disk" and the operating system says "fetch has been changed to get and I no longer respond to fetch"
Also because Microsoft has changed the security model, and requests made by Oracle are now denied due to insufficient, or differences in, security.
An analogy - you have a device with a plug to use in North America. Why can you not simply plug it in to the wall socket in other countries?
The information you need should probably come from Microsoft, not Oracle.

  • What program for backing up my windows-partition?

hey. i recently made a new partition using boot camp assistant.
its formatted as ntfs with windows 7. the problem is, i need more space.
the logical thing to do is to clone the windows-partition from os x, then delete it.
this way i could just make a new one with more space, and restore the image i cloned earlier.
ive seen many giving winclone a chance for this specific job.
i also tried winclone, but i encountered a problem which is (according to many people) due to the fact that
winclone has certain issues/problems with cloning a partition with windows 7.
after around 20 seconds into the cloning process, i get an error message.. probably
because of what i mentioned above.
a quotation "Winclone on Snow Leopard (10.6) has an issue cloning Windows 7 (NTFS) partitions. Disabling compression in Preferences may resolve this."
i would like to check in the preferences of winclone to see if disabling this compression might do the trick,
the only problem is - i cannot locate any preferences.. anywhere. how come?
and, is there a better and just as simple alternative to winclone out there, to pull this job?

Your question is a Windows question really and has nothing to do with a Mac or OS X. You may find some help in the Boot Camp forum though. Click Apple Support Communities they type Boot Camp.
    Good luck.

  • In need of advice for backing up HD Video

So we returned from a vacation,
where I shot all the video in HD 1080p.
We got back, and I used Final Cut Express to convert the AVCHD files from .mkv to .mov files.
All together, the total files come to a whopping 78.93 GB. Wow.
I need to back these up to DVD's or something
(My wife says she doesnt want them on an external hard drive, her last one died)
is there a way I could compress these?
or should I use quicktime/visualhub to bring down the quality a little?
any advice would be greatly appreciated
    thanks

    Solutions:
    1) ignore the wife and backup to a good hard drive such as a LaCie quadra. usb or firewire.
    2) Buy Time Capsule and backup to it.
    3) what would i do? Use MPEGStreamClip to make mp4 files , to control the file size. The picture will still look very good but it does not do 5.1 channel sound. Handbrake does but since the file is HD probably will crash while encoding so will VisualHub. Another consideration, MPEGStreamClip on a 2 gig HD movie will take 15 hrs on a Mac pro let alone an iMac.
Currently not too many programs will do HD encoding.
    4) backup to optical disc, I'd never do that ; too many compatibilty issues with different drives perceived for future usage.
    5) back to the wife, user should alway have three backup stategies; ie main drive then backup # 1 then backup #2. I've backup to external and internal hard drives for over a decade without problems.

  • I need simple instructions for backing up

I have an iMac running 10.7.4.
    I have 4GB of memory
I have a T back up disk, which is set up to automatically back up each night.
I have not been able to back up now for over a week as it says I don't have enough room,
"this backup is too large for the bu disk. Reqires 400.74 but only has 368.52 GB avail.
How can I find out what files are designated by the Yellow bar?  The yellow bar is showing 400 GB of OTHER.
I work with PSE and moved all the PSD files over to the external drive (which really wasn't a lot of GB). I thought it would be more and would free up a lot of space so I could back up. So, I really don't know where to go from here. I'm self taught with no one to ask ??.  I tried to search on the board here but was too confused.
    Would appreciate help.
    thank you
    Karen

Deleting data on your computer does not free up space on the backup drive. You would need to use the Time Machine application (in your Dock) to delete files from the backup.
Erasing the backup drive will not do anything to the main hard drive. But it will remove all your old backups. If that's not a desired result, then you can put this backup drive in storage, get a larger backup drive, and let Time Machine do a fresh backup on the new, larger backup drive.
Time Machine will automatically backup all mounted disk drives unless they have been specifically excluded in Time Machine preferences. It's quite possible that Time Machine backed up this other external drive while it was connected.

    Hello
I have a Toshiba Satellite C855-1KP, Part Number PSKCAE-04600QG5, and i can`t find the wireless driver on web.
I scaned my laptop with TOSHIBA PC Diagnostic Toll, and at Network appear:

All my drivers I downloaded from www.Toshiba.com, all worked, except the wireless driver.
I tryed allready some wireless drivers from Intel ( Intel PRoSet/Wiress Software and Intel PRoSet/Wiress WiMAX Software ) but they give me an error that I couldn`t resolve ( The WiMAX adapter was missing, and the error code was 0x302 ).
I really don`t know what anything else to do. Please help me if you can.

    Hi
The REALTEK B/G/N(1X1)RTL8723AE was built in other notebook series.
Therefore I would recommend downloading the driver from other notebook series.
    For example:
    [Realtek Semiconductor Corporation v2.00.0020|http://www.toshiba.eu/innovation/download_driver_details.jsp?service=EU&selCategory =2&selFamily=381&selSeries=231&selProduct=7506&sel ShortMod=3427&language=13&selOS=29&selType=all&yea rupload=&monthupload=&dayupload=&useDate=null&mode =allMachines&search=&action=search&macId=&country= all&selectedLanguage=13&type=all&page=1&ID=84224&O SID=29&driverLanguage=42]

  • Problem with OEM backing up on windows system.

    Hi to all,
I have a problem with backing up with a specific user.
I am currently running various "test" db's and am planning to back them up.
    The Setup:
Host OS is windows 2003 server s2
    Grid control 10.2.0.1
    Database 10.2.0.2
Target Db is running on a windows 2003 server
    The Situation:
From grid control I locate the db in question and go to the maintenance page and the backup settings. First of all I want to test the backup using the tab. Before this of course I enter the Host OS credentials into the system, let’s say "jamie", and add the appropriate password. By this point I have made sure that the user "jamie" is in the local security policy setting "log on as batch job" and that is in the group ora_dba (This is on both the machine I am backing up from and the target db machine.). For security reasons I have limited the share folder location to the user "jamie", making sure that sharing and security has the appropriate privileges to access the share.
I run a test backup using the tab within backup settings and await the results. The results come back unsuccessful. Reading through the log I see that the path to backup share is denied.
So to further the test I change the privileges within the share to "everyone" and that is for both sharing and security, just to see whether or not it’s the path itself rather than restrictions to the user. It is then a success. I checked to see who actually owned the file that was used within the test. It belonged to the local system on the target db, not to the user that I had specified within "Host OS Credentials".
Can anyone explain to me why and what is the reason behind putting in Host OS Credentials when the agent that is committing the back up is using the local domain system user account. I am aware that the Agent is part of a service within windows and belongs to the local domain. Ergo, why have host credentials.
And can anyone help me out with getting round this predicament if I still want security within the systems. I can’t just leave access to the share under "everyone", that'd be a really big hole in the system?!
Any help at all will be gratefully received.
If you’ve got any questions to help me solve the problem, please fire away.
