Need Wireless Network Scenarios!!
Hey guys,
I really could use your help with designing a perfect wireless network for my odd shaped house.
My house is 1 story, shaped just like an L.
The top of the little line of the "L" is where my current router and cable modem is located. THAT CANNOT CHANGE.
The base where the two lines of the "L" meet, i have a printer that I would like to add to my wireless network.
And Finally, the biggest problem, at the top of the longest line of the "L" is my living room and I get no wireless reception out there...nothing...
I have recently looked into switching my entire network over to Apple. But I would like to know if it is POSSIBLE if I can get wireless internet connection throughout my entire house.
Please let me know what you genius' think.
Please describe the answer with each thing I need at the parts of the "L" and what mode these things need to be in. (relay, base, etc.)

I would offer that you could consider any of the following options:
1) If not currently, wire the house for Ethernet. The 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) would remain at its current location and connected by Ethernet to the cable modem. Place an 802.11n AirPort Express Base Station (AXn) at the location of the printer. This AXn would need to be reconfigured as bridge. It would use the same Network Name, but use a different Base Station Name and radio channel than the AEBSn. Place a second AXn in the living room. Like the first, it would use the same Network Name, but different Base Station Name & radio channel.
2) If Ethernet is not an option, place a PowerLine adapter at each of the AirPort locations as in the first option. Both the first and second AXn would be configured as in the first option.
3) If neither of the first two options are doable, then you would need to configure for a Wireless Distribution System (WDS). The current AEBSn would be the main; the first AXn would be the relay, and the second AXn would be the remote base station in this WDS.

Need help here! I'm out of options. Computer can't see the wireless network
Sorry for the novel, but I have to tell you what is going on with my computer. I also need to vent because I’m extremely frustrated. I want to make sure I give as much info as I can we can get this fixed. I’m done with trying to figure this out on my own!!!
I’m having a major issue with the wireless network connection on my desktop. I’ve tried everything and I can’t figure out what it’s doing.
First of all, my wireless router is set up correctly (according to the Sticky), has active security, and works fine. It has nothing to do with the router. I’m sure of it.
Here’s a quick history:
When I was at my first residence in Chicago and bought a Linksys wireless N router in May 2008. My computer was about 30 feet away from the router and everything worked fine. Always found the router and never lost connection.
I moved to a new place in September 2008 and used the same router, computer, etc. at my new place. The computer was only about 7 feet away from the router this time, but I used the wireless connection instead so I wouldn’t have a network cable lying across the floor. At first everything worked fine. No issues. Then, one day out of the blue, my desktop lost connection with the router. My router didn’t even appear as an Available Wireless Network. I rebooted everything and that seemed to fix it. OK, issue fixed, right? Wrong. It did it again the next day. I rebooted everything, but it still couldn’t find my router. It did see lots of other wireless routers in the area though so I know the wireless card was working. It just didn’t see my router.
This went on for a while. Sometimes it would see my router and connect then it would lose it again. I thought maybe it was the router going bad. Well, I have a notebook computer too so I tried it. It has found my router every time and has never lost connection. I had it sitting on top of my desktop even to see if there was some sort of dead spot in my condo, but the notebook found my router just fine.
Sometimes my desktop would see my router, but it wouldn’t be my network name. It would call it “Home” or something. I know it was my network because it was the only network with maximum (Excellent) signal strength. I’m thinking it must be some sort of association issue. For some reason it doesn’t associate my router as an available network. I don’t understand that.
I tried everything: Ad Aware, Live OneCare, registry cleaners, driver updates, restore points, pretty much anything I found in the forums. Nothing worked for long if at all. It’s like my desktop only finds my router when it wants to. Note: The only thing that would work sometimes was if I clicked “Repair.” Sometimes that would work. I finally gave up and connected my desktop via network cable and unhooked my wireless card. I never lost connection as long as it was hard-wired.
The drama continues. I recently moved to Iowa and set up my network here. I’m using the same router, same desktop and wireless card, same notebook computer, etc. I went ahead and tried the wireless card on my desktop again. It worked just fine! No connection issues at all. It connected and stayed connected. I thought, “Well, that’s strange. It must have been something with the condo in Chicago. Oh well!” It worked fine from February 5 until March 10. Now it’s doing it again!!!! The notebook is about 3 feet away and sees the router just fine.
Here are the facts:
I’m using a Linksys WRT300N Wireless-N router.
I’m using a Linksys Wireless-N PCI WMP300N Adapter (about 18 months old).
I’m running Windows XP on the custom built desktop and Windows Vista on the HP notebook.
I built this computer about 5 years ago and have not done any major upgrades for 2-3 years. The only thing I added was the wireless card. I also changed out the HD in January 2009 and did a data migration right before I moved to Iowa in February. All of the networking issues were going on well before I did the data migration though so it has nothing to do with that. In fact, I had my computer hard-wired into my router at the time of the data migration and the wireless worked fine (for a little while) after I moved to Iowa. So if anything, the data migration seemed to help with my wireless connection.
All drivers are up to date.
Using Windows Live OneCare and have run complete scan: nothing found.
Using Ad Aware and have run complete scan: only found cookies and deleted them but didn’t fix issue.
Ran WinsockxpFix but that didn’t help.
Ran TweakNow RegCleaner Standard but that didn’t help.
Right-clicking the wireless icon, I try to view Available Wireless Networks. The window comes up and shows me other wireless networks in the area (2 available right now), but doesn’t show my network at all. I click “Refresh network list” and 1 or 2 of the other networks will come up, but mine is still not shown.
I’ve clicked “Repair” and get this message: “Windows could not finish repairing the problem because the following action cannot be completed: Connecting to the wireless network.”
If I go to Control Panel, there is a Wireless Configuration Utility program from Broadcom. When I open that here is what I find:
It is not managing my wireless networks.
Under the “Wireless Networks” tab I see my Network with an “X” over the router icon to the left of it and a locked security icon to the right of it.
No information under the “Link Status” or “Statistics” tabs.
The “Site Monitor” tab shows my wireless network and the other 2 networks in the area (although they drop in and out because of signal strength). My network is always present even though the signal strength bounces up and down. This tab shows that my network is secure, 802.11 is g and n, speed is 270 mbps, Channel is 9, and Signal bounces from orange/red to green. Data encryption is (m)TKIP, TKIP, WPA-PSK.
I was going to use my notebook to post this message since it has been connected for 2 days without ever losing connection. It shows Very Good signal strength and is about 3 feet away from my desktop.
Update: My desktop just connected to my network after sitting there for 2 hours. Good to Very Good signal. Broadcom tool shows the connection and now has information in the Link Status and Statistics tabs.
Cancel that. It just lost connection again. It was only connected for about 5 minutes. There is no change in signal strength according to Broadcom though. In fact, Broadcom shows better signal now that I lost connection.
Now, it just connected again (on its own) after sitting there for 10 minutes! I’ve been surfing the web on my desktop for 45 minutes now and I’m using my desktop to post this message. What the heck?!!! This is what it’s like. Aggravating huh?
Well, that’s all I can think to write. What else do you need? Can anybody help me with this?

For example yesterday when I was typing up this post, I was typing up the post on my notebook because my desktop didn't see the router. I don't think it has anything to do with the router actually, but I wanted to see if anyone on here has encountered this issue before. Other forums have similar issues but I've tried all of the fixes I found elsewhere and they didn't work.
Any other ideas?

My iMac doesnt' see my Canon MP560 wi fi scanner ever since I created a wireless network in my house. Can't find a way to change whatever settings i need to to connect the scanner. help.
Well let's see if we can help you get set up. Have you got any 2.4 GHz cordless phones in the house and if so try unplugging them and do a hard reset of the express.
1. unplug the express
2. press the reset button
3. while pressing the reset button plug in the base station
4. keep holding the rest button till you see 4 green lights flash
you may have to hold it for 30 seconds or so
if this doesn't work try plugging the express in right beside the computer and then going through the airport setup assistant

Do I really need an Airport device for my home wireless network?

I am seriously considering purchasing my very first Apple computer: a MacBook Pro to be precise. I'm a very experienced Windows PC user - was a Microsoft Windows & Office -based Help Desk Analyst at my company for 13 years till I was laid off last year. So I know my way around Microsoft Windows computers, Windows LANs, wireless networking & servers, security, etc. I currently own a Dell Precision laptop running Windows 7 - have had it for 3 years with no problems (yet - knock on wood). I have a cable modem with a Motorola SBG900 wireless router / gateway with hardware firewall enabled. Everything is secure, only certain ports are open, etc.
If I buy this MacBook Pro, get it delivered, turn it on, create my logon, etc. will it automatically work with my current wireless router / gateway after going thru the set-up procedure to connect to my network & the internet? Or do I absolutely have to purchase one of the Airport adapters in order for the Mac to talk to the router?

KimThank you Rysz, but (if you scroll up & read my original post you will discover) I don't own my new MacBook Pro...yet! I'm just researching ahead of time to help me make the decision. The customized MBP I have saved in my cart is over $3000 (incl the 3-yr support plan). So it's going to take me a little bit of research before I decide or before I can really justify the purchase.
I just wanted to be prepared for all the inevitable technical / learning-curve headaches that I will experience IF I take the plunge. And as everyone has experienced, when you're new to and making your first purchase of a different technology, and you don't know what to expect about a purchase, you ultimately get it home, set it up and find it didn't come with all the necessary interface devices, converters or cables, etc. And of course the online purchase procedure wizard doesn't tell you or ask you what else you will need if you want to perform a specific task.
But I'm sure (if) once I do make the purchase, I will definitely be back here to pick everyone's brains! These communities are fantastic. Thanks again! -
I have an eMac which I want to connect to my home wireless network. My router is D-Link - 601 tech. 802.11n. My eMac is wireless ready but does not contain an airport card. Do I need a card and an airport station? What else?
You need the Airport card OR Airport Express but not both. Considering the age of your machine, I recommend Airport Express as you will find other uses for it whenever you replace the eMac.
To set up the AE, you do need OSX 10.4 or higher. -
Need help adding 2nd AExpress to wireless network
hey peeps, i'm adding my second AE to my system, which contains a Macbook, a wireless DSL modem and another AExpress which is wireless and is connected to a stereo. I am having trouble connecting the 2nd AE to the system. Everytime i try to configure it it asks me if i want to switch networks, which i don't want to do. When i do that i lose my connection. I need to tie the new AE in to my current system.
Ok, let's double-check the 2nd AX's configuration to join the wireless network provided by the 2wire.
Temporarily connect AX to your Mac Pro using an Ethernet cable, and then, using the AirPort Utility check the following:
AirPort > Wireless
o Wireless Mode: Join a wireless network
o Network Name: <existing 2wire's wireless network>
o Wireless Security: <select the encryption type of the existing wireless network>
o Wireless Password: <enter the existing wireless network password>
o Verify Password: <re-enter the existing wireless network password>
Music
o Enable AirTunes (checked)
o iTunes Speaker Name: <enter desired speaker name>
o iTunes Speaker Password: (optional)
o Verify Password: (optional)
o Click Update to write the new settings to the AX
In iTunes:
iTunes > Preferences... > Advanced > General
o Look for remote speakers connected with AirTunes (checked) -
Need help connecting to my home Wireless Network
I need help connecting my LaserJer M1212nf MFP to my home wirless network. I would like to use Apple's AirPrint, and be able to print from my iPad.
I've spent a few hours following the directions I found on the manuals through hp.com and I've had no luck. I've already unistalled and reinstalled the printer. I've also updated the firmware. If anyone can provide assistance I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you!This is NOT a wireless printer (see product spec: http://www.shopping.hp.com/shopping/pdf/ce841a.pdf), you can NOT add the printer to the wireless network. This printer do support LAN connection, so if your wireless router has LAN ports, you can added it to your home network by connecting a network cable from the printer to a LAN port on the router. You need then reinstall the printer as a network printer, to use airprint.

Need HELP! connecting to wireless network; IP Address problems!
I am trying to connect to wireless networks using the AirPort built into my MacBook Pro. There are two specific networks I am trying to connect to, both are WEP protected. I know the passwords and can get into each of them but I cannot connect to the internet, which is the main reason for connecting to them in the first place! When I go into System Preferences and click on Network, I see that next to AirPort it says I am connected to the network but may not be able to connect to the internet because my computer has a Self Assigned IP address. I assume this means my computer is not receiving an IP address from the network. I am set on full auto with DHCP. So what's wrong? Please Help!!!
That indicates that the MacBook Pro did not successfully communicate with the DHCP server on the network. Do those networks have access control (MAC address filtering) enabled? If so, the best solution is to reconfigure the base station so that this feature is disabled. This adds no real security since MAC addresses are easily discovered and cloned.
If you can't disable access control, you will need to add the MAC address of the wireless interface of your MacBook Pro to the list of allowed clients. -
Need help connecting to BEFW11S4 wireless network
A friend I visit often has a BEFW11S4 router. Other friends who visit connect immediately to the unsecured wireless network. Unfortunately, for unknown reasons I'm unable to connect with either of my laptops, so have to plug in the LAN. This is the only place I've ever had a problem connecting to a wireless network.
My laptops are Toshiba Satellites, running Windows XP Home & Office, respectively. Sometimes they won't even recognize the network, or when they do, just won't connect. I've gone through the tutorial and all settings numerous times, turned off the firewall, turned off Norton and still no luck. Any help getting me connected is appreciated. Thanks.In your computer, go to your wireless software, and go to "Preferred Networks" (sometimes called "Profiles" ). There are probably a few networks listed. Delete any network named "linksys". Also delete any network that you do not recognize, or that you no longer use. Delete any existing entry for your friend's network. Reboot your computer. Return to "Preferred Networks" and add your friends SSID. Then select this SSID and make it your default network, and set it to automatic login. You may need to go to "settings" to do this, or you may need to right click on your network and select "Properties" or "settings". Reboot computer. You should login automatically when computer boots up.

'm trying to activate my Airport Express to a wireless network powered by an Airport Extreme. I get an error message that says I need to Use Airport Utility 5.6. My system is currently running Airport Utility 6.1
Is your AirPort Express an older 802.11g model? If so, you will need to install v5.6 if you are running OS X Lion or 5.6.1 if running OS X Leopard or Snow Leopard. Unfortunately, the iOS version of the AirPort Utility cannot administer these older base stations.

I am running my first time machine backup onto a Western Digital MyBook Live. It is taking forever. Is there antivirus software running in the background or any other settings I need to change to speed it up? Also I am on a wireless network.
The initial Time Machine backup can certainly take a long time over wireless. Days, possibly. It's impossible for anyone here to be able to predict how long it will take, and wireless environmental conditions can change at any time.

Only you can determine that. If you're using third party AV software, anything is possible.
NAS devices may not be compatible with Time Machine, regardless of what their manufacturers may claim. Even after the Time Machine backup completes, your backup may be unreliable. You may not discover that until you need to rely upon the backup for some reason, and corruption can occur months or years from now.
Time Machine supports the following backup configurations:
A locally mounted volume
Time Capsule
A volume resident on a USB hard disk connected directly to a Time Capsule or current production AirPort Extreme Base Station.
That's it. Any configuration other than the above list places you in an experimental category. If your backup fails, you're on your own. -
I get no wireless signal inside my home, only outside, so I need a network extender that will work for the Lumia 2520, Specs indicate it uses LTE FDD netork Band 20 (800MHz), Band 3 (1800MHz), Band 7 (2600 MHz). Does Verizon offer a network extender that will work with the Lumia 2520?

Help needed on enabling a wireless network on a G4
I have a wireless network using a linksys router. I now need to equip a 467Mhz G4 so that it can connect to the network. The G4 has a spare PCI slot and is also equipped with usb 2.0.
What is the best way to connect the G4? Most of the usb adaptors and pci cards only appear to be Windows compatable.
Any suggestions would be welcome. ThanksAs Larry hinted at, your Power Mac G4 666MHz (Digital Audio) has a slot an internal slot for the original 802.11b AirPort card. This is NOT compatible with the AirPort Extreme card.
The G4 has a spare PCI slot and is also equipped with usb 2.0.
USB 2 ?? Is this via a PCI card supplying USB 2 ?? The Power Mac G4 did not have USB 2 but USB 1.1.
The best way to give the G4 wireless capability is via the original AirPort card. Other good choices are either a Mac OS compatible PCI wireless card or an Ethernet wireless adapter. The Ethernet wireless adapter does not require drivers and therefore will work with any Ethernet device.

Dumb question. Do I need to set up a wireless network for Apple TV?
Wireless newbie here. Recently purchased Apple TV... Trying to set it up and I don't see my wireless network available on the list... I have a built in Airport Extreme in my Mac Mini which I've never used before (or anything else wireless for that matter). I turned it on and I can see my MIni listed (and checked) under the computer to computer networks... Do I need to do something else? Thanks!
you have an airport extreme wireless card in your mac mini which lets you join a wireless network but you will need an airport express or airport extreme or other wireless router to actually create your wireless network... i.e. you don't go directly from mini to appleTV.. you need a wireless router between them.

or you can also connect them with ethernet again through a router... -

Have imported my certificate from Windows XP machine into keychain and made Leopard always trust in order to authenticate automatically into my corporate wireless network. Also attempted to establish a new 802.1x connection via network preferences without any success. It keeps asking me for username and password even though we used self-generated certificates to log into corporate wireless network. Does anybody have any instructions on how to successfully configure certificates in Leopard?Welcome to the discussion area, jackregan!
You'll need to "hard reset" the Time Capsule and then reconfigure it again. To do this, you will hold in the reset button until you see the amber light begin to blink more quickly, keep holding another second or two and then release.
The "hard reset" will not affect the data on your Time Capsule
Now you can open AirPort Utility and configure the Time Capsule using wireless (be sure to log on to the default network which will have a name like Apple Network xxxxxx), or you can connect an ethernet cable from your computer to one of the LAN <-> ports on the Time Capsule to have AirPort Utility communicate with it that way.
When you open AirPort Utility, click Continue to follow the guided setup to re-configure your Time Capsule. You would choose the option to "Create a wireless network" when you are given the configuration options.
