  • Need your advice on making family videos without losing quality

    I need your advice.  I don't know where to put my question because I don't know which piece of software I need (so I am posting this in a few places on the forum: sorry).  That is exactly the question, I guess.
    I have a couple of digital cameras that I use to make family videos.  They both produce .avi files.  Sometimes I use an iPhone that produces .mov files.  So after my children and grandchildren visit, I end up with a bunch of these little videos.  I want to combine them into longer videos that I can watch more conveniently on my Apple TV 2 or put on a DVD to send my kids or to my elderly mother-in-law to watch.  I know how to combine them using iMovie HD, but that process seems to radically degrade the resolution and/or image quality.  The original .avi files are 1024x768 and are very clear and sharp.  I can't watch these .avi files on my ATV2 so I've been using Quicktime Player 10.0 to open them and then save them as .mov files.  Once I import these files into iTunes, I can watch them on my ATV2 and they too look great on my tv (since they have the same resolution as the original .avi files): sharp and clear.  But after I use iMovie HD to combine them (the .avi files) into an .m4v file, they're down to 640x480, and don't look near as good.  And the DVD made from this file using iDVD looks equally bad and blocky.
    I think what I want to know is, can I change some parameters on iMovie HD to produce files that are as high quality as the original .avi and .mov files?  Or if not, what software do I need to accomplish this?  I'm not interested in "fancy" movies.  These are just home movies, but they are important to us.  Should I upgrade my iMovie to do this?  Or get Quicktime Pro?  Or what?  I'd appreciate your advice.  I'd like to keep the process as simple as possible.

    This is my workflow. I'm sure you will get a variety of opinions, but all I can say for my AVI clips, I've had excellent results for viewing on AppleTV.
    I use iMovie HD 6 for organizing the clips into short movies, 15 minutes +/-.  Clips are imported into iMovie as DV files. Once the movies are completed, I Export from iMovie as Full Quality, which results in a my-movie.dv file.
    I then open the dv file in MPEG Streamclip. There I use the MP4 and iTunes settings for screen ratio and bit rate. 4:3 for Standard Def and 16:9 for High Def. Sounds complicated, but once you open MPEG Streamclip, the settings are simple to figure out.
    The main thing to remember about quality is not to upscale your video. If the resolution is 640x480 SD, do not export higher than 640x480.
    Here are a couple of screenshots using MPEG Streamclips "Export to MP4" setting:

  • Weird Access Problems - Really Need Your Advice

    This is complex and confusing, and I am not an IT expert. Let me provide background and symptoms:
    1) I recently moved and transferred ISP providers from Cox to Adelphia.
    2 My setup consists of Mac G5, a Powerbook, and an Airport Station. The internet cable from Adelphia runs into the Airport Station. A cable then runs from the Airport Station to the G5, and the connection to the Powerbook is made via wireless. This setup worked very well when Cox was my ISP
    3) My Apple Mail client accesses mail servers at Cox, Adelphia, Gmail, and .Mac,
    4) When I made the hookup described in 2) I was no longer able to access Gmail from Safari. However, when I directly connected the Adelphia cable to the G5 (cutting the Airport out of the loop) I was able to access Gmail.
    5) Upon review from Adelphia they suggested that I make sure that there no static entries had been placed in the DHCP field. I checked the field using the Airport software and cleared the field (I am not sure if this was static entry or had been placed there by Adelphia).
    6) I hooked the computers and Airport up as in 2). Now the Gmail could be accessed from Safari. HOWEVER, now I could not access Adelphia's mail from Safari. Also I found that I could not access some the the web pages that came up as a result of Google searchs. This has never occurred before.
    7) Additionally, I found now when directly connected the G5 to the Adelphia cable I could still get Gmail, but I no longer could access .Mac from Safari.
    Note: I have gone through the same steps above using Foxfire and get similar results
    BASIC SUMMARY: 1) When Airport is in the connections cannot get access .Mac from Safari (but can access Gmail and Adelphia). 2) When the Airport is connected I cannot access Adelphia from Safari (but can access Gmail and .Mac).
    WHAT SHOULD I DO NEXT???: 1) Should I reset the Airport to its original factory settings and reinstall?. 2) Should I clear out the cookies?. 3) Since these are all related to various mail accounts (Gmail, .Mac, and Adelphia) is there something that could be done with the Apple Mail client???
    Need your advice!
    Mac G5   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    PLB11,
    pretty complex indeed.
    I would start by running Network Diagnostics with your standard configuration (i.e. the one with the Airport).
    In the Apple menu, select System Preferences, Network, then click on the "Assist me..." button on the bottom. That should give you two options: "Diagnostics" and "Assistant".
    Try Diagnostics first. If that doesn't solve your problem, run it again without the Airport. If the problem persists, run Assistant and set up a new configuration from scratch, using the original layout with the Airport.
    Please post back the results. Good luck!

  • How to call CLOB to BLOB conversion function within stored procedure?

    I have a tiny APEX application from which I need to be able to print. I’ve used these two resources: (Is there an inexpensive APEX report printer for invoices/checks/statements? and http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E14373_01/appdev.32/e13363/up_dn_files.htm#CJAHDJDA)
    I guess that in order to be able to download the RTF document stored in CLOB, I need to convert it into BLOB. I’ve found this function for this purpose on Oracle forums:
    CREATE OR REPLACE FUNCTION     c2b( c IN CLOB ) RETURN BLOB
    -- typecasts CLOB to BLOB (binary conversion)
    IS
              pos PLS_INTEGER := 1;
              buffer RAW( 32767 );
              res BLOB;
              lob_len PLS_INTEGER := DBMS_LOB.getLength( c );
    BEGIN
         DBMS_LOB.createTemporary( res, TRUE );
         DBMS_LOB.OPEN( res, DBMS_LOB.LOB_ReadWrite );
    LOOP
         buffer := UTL_RAW.cast_to_raw( DBMS_LOB.SUBSTR( c, 16000, pos ) );
         IF          UTL_RAW.LENGTH( buffer ) > 0
         THEN
                   DBMS_LOB.writeAppend( res, UTL_RAW.LENGTH( buffer ), buffer );
         END IF;
         pos := pos + 16000;
         EXIT WHEN pos > lob_len;
    END LOOP;
    RETURN res; -- res is OPEN here
    END c2b;And I am trying to use it in the modified download procedure that I also have found on Oracle forums:
    CREATE OR REPLACE PROCEDURE DOWNLOAD_WO(v_id IN NUMBER)
    AS
            v_mime          VARCHAR2(48);
            v_length     NUMBER;
            v_file_name     VARCHAR2(2000):= 'WO_Download.rtf';

              v_project        jobs_vw.project%TYPE;
              v_description     jobs_vw.description%TYPE;

        lob_loc := REPLACE(lob_loc, '#JOB_NO#', v_job_no);
        lob_loc := REPLACE(lob_loc, '#APQWO#', v_apqwo);
                  -- set up HTTP header

                        -- if it is a null set it to application/octect
                        -- application/octect may launch a download window from windows
                        owa_util.mime_header( nvl(v_mime,'application/octet'), FALSE );
                    -- set the size so the browser knows how much to download
                    htp.p('Content-length: ' || v_length);
                    -- the filename will be used by the browser if the users does a save as
                    htp.p('Content-Disposition:  attachment; filename="'||replace(replace(substr(v_file_name,instr(v_file_name,'/')+1),chr(10),null),chr(13),null)|| '"');
                    -- close the headers
                    owa_util.http_header_close;
                    -- download the BLOB
    --                wpg_docload.download_file( Lob_loc );
                             v_blob := c2b(lob_loc);
                             wpg_docload.download_file( v_blob );
    end DOWNLOAD_WO;
    /Unfortunately when I try to compile the download_wo stored procedure I am getting this error:
    Error at line 64: PL/SQL: Statement ignoredThe 64th line is:
    v_blob := c2b(lob_loc);How should I correctly call c2b within download_wo? Any advice is greatly appreciated.
    Thank you for your time.

  • CLOB to BLOB conversion to save space

    Hi Gurus,
    I am having a table with a CLOB column which I am asked to convert into BLOB and in the process save some space. But I am finding even after the conversion, it is taking same amount of space as the previous CLOB column.
    Is there any way I can convert it to BLOB and/or save space in any way.
    Please let me know if there are any ways.
    Thanks

  • Need your advices on MacBook Pro Retina

    Hi all !
    I'm in the market for getting a new laptop.
    To put you in context, I'm a student studying electronics. Normally, I know what I'm talking about ;-) lol
    I work as a park supervisor. I could not get a better summer job since I can study while working ! Every day, I sits in the park, turn on my laptop and start coding, reading and studying. Being paid to study is sincerly amazing ! ahah !
    So, I study most of the time in the park, on my laptop.
    I also have a powerful workstation (Asus P8P67 WS Revolution, Core i7 2700K 4.5 GHz, Asus GeForce GTX 680 DirectCUII, 16 GB RAM, RAID 0 SSD, a beautiful monster) for long works and coding session. I also do a lot of virtualization with VMWare Workstation. In fact, I've built a virtualization concept which segregates each tasks in different VMs.
    But, my laptop is an essential tool for me because I use it as much as my workstation. I'm used to carry it at school and at work. So usage is about 50/50 between my Workstation and my laptop.
    I started learning the CUDA API and massively parrallel programming. I bought the Cuda By Example book ( http://www.amazon.ca/CUDA-Example-Introduction-General-Purpose-Programming/dp/01 31387685 ). My Asus UL30VT has a CUDA-Capable GPU in it, along with the integrated Intel chipset. So I setup everything for Visual Studio, install the nVIDIA SDK, and start programming.
    Here comes the trouble.
    Neither Visual Studio nor the nVIDIA SDK (which contains code samples) see the GeForce G210M in my laptop.
    I searched a little over the internet and found that the integration of the graphics processors in this laptop is the worst kind of integration ever built in a laptop. The GPU switching technology is the "beta" version of the nVIDIA Optimus technology. The video drivers are more than obselete (197.xx driver version!!!!) and no more recent version is available, even with tweaks.
    Absolutely no CUDA code would run in my laptop.
    Sure, I could code on my workstation. But it's summer, and being stuck in the house basement while it's sunny outside ... ***** ... lol
    And as I said, since I study most of the time (~90%) in my park, it's not very usefull to have a laptop that cannot do what you want anymore...
    So I started my research to find a new laptop that would fit my needs. Easier to say than to do...
    There is one month, Apple has announced the new MacBook Pro 15 Retina Edition.
    I went in an Apple Store to take a look at these nothing else than piece of art.
    And you'll guess it : I've fallen in love with this machine.
    Thin, lightweight, good battery life, incredible display, amazing hardware. Everything on this laptop is incredible. Even the price ..................
    Sure, the non-retina display is also a good machine, but being used to an ultraportable laptop (pre-ultrabook fashion), I would like it to be has thin and light as possible. And the non-retina has less high-end hardware too...
    Since I saw this machine, the idea of getting one haunts me!
    I tell myself that I could do more shots with one rock. I could learn the OS X environment which is, according to everyone who has an Apple computer, the best working environment ever created. And since I do a lot of virtualization but never could do this with my ultra-low-voltage CPU, the MacBook would also enable this possibility.
    More and more programmers are adopting OS X to code. nVIDIA has also said that the new MacBook is one of the best CUDA development platform.
    ( http://blogs.nvidia.com/2012/06/new-macbook-pros-make-for-great-cuda-dev-platfor ms/ ). Sure, I have a long road to go throught before being a real developper, but as you might have seen, I like to work on things that really work well.
    So, the 2700$-question : according to you and all the details I wrote here, does a MacBook Pro would be a nice choice for me ?
    For this price (in Canadian dollars, I live in Montreal, Quebec), I have the MacBook, the Apple Care for 3 years and VMWare Fusion. It's a 400$-discount that I get because I'm a student (200$ on the machine, 100 $ on the Apple Care, and a 100$ gift card to get the iWork Suite and other softwares if needed).
    The Non-Retina model is not an option, since I must upgrade it with SSD, 8 GB RAM et would like a better screen resolution. With all these upgrades, it's even pricier than the Retina which come more equiped.
    I've looked to other laptop manufacturers too. Dell offers the XPS 15, but it's bulkier, doesn't feature has much as the MacBook, and I would not pay 1900 $ for a "Dell"......... Lenovo makes great laptop too, but I don't know ... Thinkpad are sure the reference as business laptops, but are heavy and bulky. Maybe I've missed a model... The IdeaPad is a nice ultrabook, but once again, it's an Ultra low voltage CPU, so virtualization would be so-so I guess... And Asus has nothing really exciting avalaible at NCIX (the main Asus online reseller in Canada and also the online shop where I buy all my system components).
    One other thing : with all non-Mac laptops, I'm at the "mercy" of the manufacturer regarding GPU drivers, just like my Asus UL30VT... Most of the time, the Verde drivers would not install and you get the very nice message "Please refere to your laptop manufacturer for drivers" ......... -_-"
    I request your experience and advice to clarify my choice.
    Thank you very much !!!

    I was going to try to convince you to go with a PC notebook, but I know nothing about them. As you're concerned about weight, CUDA development, etc., I think that the MBP-R would be an excellent choice. I'm in a wheelchair and carry my MBP around in my backpack on back of my chair, so I don't worry about weight too often...
    It sounds as if you're bright enough to be able to learn new things quickly, so there's no need, I think, to go with the usual "if you're already familiar with Windows, why not... etc."
    It also sounds as if you've both thought things through and have decided on what you need. My opinion? Go with your gut feelings and thoughts. Just remember that you're going to be on the bleeding edge, somewhat. There are some here who have had problems with their new MBP's - and not just the Retina models. But then, we don't hear about the thousands (tens of thousands?) out there who are having no problems.
    Three things to remember - if you have trouble with your new computer during the first two weeks, Apple will replace it, refund your money, whatever. Second, AppleCare (which I always buy) extends your one year warranty and 90-day phone support to a three year warranty with three years of phone support. And third, this is a large community and there will always be someone here who can help you through minor glitches you may have.
    Go with your gut - get that new MacBook Pro with Retina display. I'm sure that you'll be happy with it. I would go ahead, though, and pay the $79 for the external USB SuperDrive - not to carry around with you but just as insurance should you ever need an optical drive.
    Best of luck,
    Clinton

  • Alright guys I need your Advice (Logic Vs.)

    Alright guys,
    I've been apart of the Logic community for a while now and I've been a Logic and Pro Tools user for some time. Now is
    the time for me to get new gear and I would like some advice
    My setup:
    Mac Pro 2ghz, 2 gigs ram
    Apogee Ensemble
    Presonus Digimax 96k
    With the release of the 003 factory from Digi, I have been tempted to go and trade in my apogee for one and switch to Pro Tools.
    The reason being,
    1) McDSP plug ins (amazing emulations for cheap, Can't think of anything AU format that is as good)
    2) Audio editing (so much more intuitive then Logic right now)
    3) I don't use Midi at all and most of Logic is based around Midi
    4) Very intuitive mixing console (the 003)
    5) Recording audio in Logic is cumbersome (the window pop up with the progress bar,
    plus having to manually delete every track that wasn't good instead of just "apple z" undoing the recording like in PT)
    Reasons I don't want to do that are,
    1) 32 track count max (with pricey add on 48)
    2) LE hardware known for being less then grade A converters
    3) Digidesign CPU efficiency is know for being crappy
    So my options are,
    Trade in my Apogee for a 003 board
    or
    Get a Mackie MCU Pro, some plug ins that are similar
    to the McDSP ones and PRAY that Logic gets an update soon
    so I can get serious about recording and editing REAL audio.
    Even watching the new Soundtrack pro demo involving audio
    editing made me wish that Logic had some of that ability.
    Anyway, I appreciate any advice you guys can give regarding
    this predicament.
    Thanks

    Hi TWL,
    I am also from the Icey Waste Land. It snowed today. It's April 16th for goodness sakes!!!
    3) I don't use Midi at all and most of Logic is based
    around Midi
    That and this ....
    5) Recording audio in Logic is cumbersome
    .... makes your argument valid I think. I would add that editing audio in Logic is more cumbersome as well.
    It seems to me that you don't need to use any of Logic's biggest strengths (MIDI, Softsynth, Score features, etc) and if you are strictly recording, editing and mixing audio, Logic may be overkill.
    I will temper that with my opninion that audio in Logic sounds better. Call me crazy but I've noticed this and time again. I often do most of my work in Logic, but if have to do a ton of edits on an audio file I will dump it into to ProTools LE to edit (maybe this is as I've just used PT for years and am still new to logic). Everytime I do this the audio in PT doesn't sound as good or as musical to my ears - and this is with no DSP in either host.
    I will keep Logic as my main DAW - but I am using a lot of MIDI etc. I keep PT strictly to edit audio. It is my hope that with experience I will uncover the hidden tricks to edit in Logic as quickly as I did in PT.
    My two cents.

  • External Displays: I need a bigger display, I need your advice...

    The title sums everything up:
    I'm running a 1.42GHz iBook with a 14" screen, but I'd like to work with at much larger display at my desk. Can anyone help with advice and recommendations? Thanks...

    If it's in your budget, the 20" Dell widescreen display is quite nice - I'm using one right now. It has both DVI and VGA inputs, so I have both PC and Powerbook connected to it. It also has component video and S video inputs, with the ability to do picture by picture or picture in picture.
    Whatever you get, just remember it needs to have a VGA input. You can't go from VGA to DVI.

  • I need your advice

    please I'm actually a "to be" graphics designer. I'm starting fully soon for a mini business purpose.
    Just about thirty minutes ago, my HP little printer (j510) just got spoilt. it kept blinking d coloured cartridge light indicator even when d software on my system never gave error for my coloured cartridge. and I just refilled d cartridge. I've done all i could think of but I still can't print.
    im posting here because I wanna change my printer and I need a printer good enough to print handbills, business cards, envelopes and other possible printings. please can anyone just tell me d printer I can buy or order from HP. please I need a very good one and not too expensive.
    I will be glad if I can get a catalogue with the printers, their capabilities, their shortcomings(lol) and their price from anyone. please I need this as soon as possible.

  • Backing up 9000 + photos, need your advice

    Hi all,
    Up to this month, my iphoto library is hitting 9000+ photos, mostly kids you know, I do backup my photos to external harddrive and another desktop machine regularly(copy the entire iphoto folder). What is the best way to backup my photos on DVDs? I don't want to mess around with my photo library since I have too many photos to loose. I search around the forum and found there is a known issue on the keywords after backup, is that true? I am a powerbook user, just bought a 800mhz quicksilver recently, I also want to know what is the best way to backup files between my PB and Quicksilver. By the way, I am using iphoto 5.04. Thanks in advance!

    Well, you're on the right track with your external HD backups. Yes, there is a problem with keywords when you burn photos from within iPhoto to disc.
    The best way to backup your iPhoto Library folder to to copy it intact to the new location. That gives you a complete, working backup in case it's needed. That would be the way to do it between your PB and Quicksilver. Put one in the Target mode or connect them with a LAN, and copy away.
    For backing up to discs you will lose your keywords. If that's critical then you'll have to rely on your external HD backup. If not then I'd backup by rolls. That way you'll be assured you get all of your photos.
    There is one way you can backup to DVD and keep all information. I've done it with a small library as a proof of concept. That would be to copy parts of your iPhoto library folder to DVD discs, making sure you know how to reconstruct the original library later. Then when needed, copy each disc into a new folder on your HD so that the structure is identical to what is was originally. You will need to select enough items to just fill a single DVD, keep it below 4.5G, label them so you don't duplicate items, and burn. Then select more items for them next disc. The downside with this method is that's it's all or nothing on recovering photos. If you burn rolls from within iPhoto you can recover any individual or group of photos that are in those rolls.
    Hope this has been of some help. Good luck.

  • Need your advice

    Hi, I am not sure if you discuss this here, if not let me know where to ask. I am now using Macbook (2gb of Ram, 2.2 Ghz, 120GB hard drive - bought it a year ago). I am mostly working with photos, editing a lot of raw files and my mac is now powerful enough especially when running Photoshop with Lightroom (I had to stop using aperture as it was too slow). So I am considering getting a more powerful computer and I am torn between an old macpro and a new one (the 15'' one, with 2.53Ghz). The only thing I don't like about the new one is the display (I like mat screens) and the display is actually one of the reasons I want a new computer - I am getting a new Canon 5D and want to enjoy the pictures on a good screen. But the old macpro has only 2 gigs of ram and an old graphic card. Taking into account a huge price difference, what would you advice to get in this situation? Will the new macpro be dramatically quicker than the old one?

    The 2.4 GHz MacBook Pro in your link is a very capable machine. From a performance perspective, you would not notice much difference when comparing it to the 2.53 GHz MacBook Pro.
    Having written that, I have noted a thread, with praises for the new MacBook Pro, for you to consider.

    By having a unibody MacBook Pro, you will never have to worry about this issue.

    It is easier to upgrade the RAM and hard drive in the new MacBook Pros too.
    My vote is for the 2.53 GHz MacBook Pro.
    At the end of the day, go with your budget. Whichever one you choose, you are getting one of the best notebooks on the planet!
    Good luck with your decision!

  • Safari Peformance Problems - Need Your Advice

    Lately my Safari browser has been performing strangely. Often the blue bar that sweeps across the "http" window at the top of the Safari page does not complete its sweep and locks up. Also, I am noticing statements at the bottom of the Safari page saying things like ".......completed 184 out of 191 items",
    What is going on here? Do I need to make any changes to Safari? Are these symptoms possibly the result of the web pages that Safari is trying to load having instructions that Safari is not equipped to follow?

    Bee,
    Thanks for the quick response.
    No, I do not have any of the special type software that you enumerate.
    Some details on how safari is performing:
    1) A good example of what I mentioned in my first note is the behavior when I contact www.cnn.com. The blue bar that sweeps across the top of the page does not complete its sweep and I get a message at the bottom of the page such as ".....completed 93 of 184 items". I then halt the browser. The web page is useable, but evidently parts of it were never completed.
    2) Sometimes I simply cannot access a web page. For example I just tried to access http://groups-beta.google.com/group/comp.sys.mac.comm/topics and the browser basically locked up and got nowhere.
    3) In another case I can access a web page, but once on the page I cannot get icon driven commands to function. For example, I can contact the Adelphia home page (www.adelphia.net), but on that page are icon driven commands to access my eMail and a support chat room. Neither of these commands work. The browser again locks up. This is most vexing because Adelphia is my new ISP.
    Note 1: These problems do not occur with all web pages. I can access many web pages such as amazon.com without any such problems.
    Note 2: None of these problems occur when I access the net directly through a modem using my PowerBook.
    For me, this is all most confusing.
    Your thoughts?

  • I need your advices please

    I want to buy a canon camera
    and i'm not sure yet
    i think that i'll buy this one !!
    if you don't agree
    please giveme some choices

    The link you provided is not working.
    Everything depends on the type of photos you are planning to take and the type of photographer you are when making a choice for a new camera. For instance, if you are the type of person who will always be shooting in the Auto mode, and posting to social media, then most low cost compact cameras should suit you fine. If you want to get a lot of fast action shots, then you may need an enthusiast camera or DSLR. If you are into wildlife, you may want a camera with a long zoom range. If you are into nature photography, then a bridge camera may be your answer.
    Deciding factors will include your budget (price range), how well the camera fits in your hands, flexibility of the camera to use other shooting modes such as full manual control, and if you want to shoot in RAW mode as well as JPEG. You will need to let us know a bit more information so that the community can assist you better. Overall, the final choice will be yours as the opinions given may or may not suit your style, but should be a guide in helping you make a more informed choice.
    Good luck and hope we can all help you in some way!
