NEF file corrupt in lightroom, okay in Nikon ViewNX 2

A file which displays fine in the Nikon ViewNX 2 software is displayed in Lightroom (thumbnail and image can be viewed fine, including zoom etc.), but Lightroom reports "An unexpected end-of-file occurred" and I am unable to make an adjustment (unable to make WB or lens corrections -- it does let me crop),   I deleted the file in Lightroom and imported it again with the same problem. It is a 4912x7360 file taken with a Nikon D800.  Suggestions to get Lightroom to work with it?

There have been several reports of this problem recently. One of the most common causes seems to have been that the users have used an outdated version of Nikon Transfer to import their images. I don't  know if that could be the case in your situation, but it's worth asking.

  • Why won't lightroom open my raw (NEF) files? I shoot with a Nikon D5500.

I just did a photoshoot and lightroom is telling me that my files are not supported by lightroom. it says lightroom is up to date. I have a cc subscription and can't use lightroom. please tell me there is an easy fix

Support for the Nikon D5500 was released with Adobe Camera Raw 8.8 on March 19th 2015. There has not been a corresponding release of LR 5.8. The expectation is that LR 6 will be release in the near future but there has been no specific release from Adobe.
In the meantime LR users have been advised that they can make use of the Adobe DNG Converter 8.8 which they can use to convert the NEF files to the DNG format and import these files for use in LR 5.7.1 or other earlier versions.
See  the link below for the official communication.
Lightroom Journal | Tips and advice straight from the Lightroom team.
Quote from the communication. "Camera Raw 8.8 is now available as a final release for Photoshop CS6 and Photoshop CC.  DNG Converter 8.8 is provided for all Lightroom customers and Photoshop customers using versions of Photoshop older than Photoshop CS6."
It is clear that there will be no further versions of ACR version 8. and unlikely to be a version 5.8 for Lightroom. We have to await Photoshop CC 2015 and LR 6.

  • NIKON NEF files corruption

I have problem of NIKON NEF(NIKON D7000 CAMERA) files corruption after updating my MacAir to IOS Yosemite. I updated recently with latest Digital Raw Converter 9.06 but problem is still same. JPEG files are no problem. Any suggestion ho to solve? thanks

The answer is in this link.
FAQ: Will Photoshop Elements work with my camera, or Why won't my raw files open?
Each Nikon camera has its own particular NEF format. First select your camera model and look in the link about supported cameras for the necessary version of the ACR plugin.
The present version of Elements is 8.6. The dngconverter has a 'release candidate' version 8.7.

  • Nef file corrupted but preview looks fine

    Hi everyone,
That's the first time I get an error when opening an image in Photoshop and I dont really know what to do to get it to work. Its actually almost half my sd card that got corrupted, the preview image looks normal but as soon as I try to open it to start working on it, I get this error:
"Could not complete your request because an unexpected end-of-file was encountered."
Same thing happen in Lightroom, I even tried Picasa and always the same problem, preview looks normal but the NEF file does not open (Photoshop) Cant make changes (Lightroom) Open with plenty of lines, colors, etc (Picasa)
Is there a way to get past this error in Photoshop or at least be able to work on the preview files ???
    Thank you for your help!

The preview you refer to is probably the jpg image the camera makes of image, as a camera can not display a raw image.  This is called the embedded thumbnail.
So the NEF is probably hosed.  This usually happens when a card is inserted that has been formatted with another camera.  It is wise to format your card, in the camera, before each use.
The other posibility is that the transfer of imagaes from the card became corrupted.  The safest way is to transfer with a USB card reader.

  • Why aren't my NEF files importing into Lightroom 5 anymore?

I have a Nikon D7100 camera that I shoot Raw in.  I've imported these NEF files into Lightroom 5 from my camera on previous occasions, but recently I wanted to import new photos.  The new photos show on Lightroom's import screen but when I click on the import button the software acts like it is beginning the import process but never does, eventually showing a warning box saying the files could not be read.  What is going on and how can I fix it?

    From Marta K Tollerup,
Thanks to all who offered help with my importing problems.  I did find the problem.  I discovered that somehow the destination file was changed so Lightroom didn't know where to import to.  If you have a Mac and your run into this problem this is how I solved it.  Hook up your card reader or camera to your computer and proceed through your usual importing steps except for clicking the Import Button.  Look at the left hand side of your import dialog box (Source area) you should see a cascade of files, one inside another.  It starts with the name of your Hard Drive, then users, then your user name, then Pictures, then a file just called 2014.  This file named 2014 inside the Picture folder is what had been changed on my computer.  Once I choose it again my photos imported without any problems.  Hope this helps anyone else having a sudden problem importing your photos.  For Mac users go into your Finder and look in the Picture Folder.  You will find where Lightroom stores your photos.  I'm assuming PC users have something similar.  It helps to know where your photos are stored because then you can spot an error in the Source area of the import dialog box.

  • RAW NEF files imported into Aperture from a Nikon D70 are dark

I imported one roll of images straight from the CF card from my Nikon D70 into Aperture.
I also imported them into Nikon PictureProject. (the current application I use)
All the NEF's in Aperture are darker than the NEF's in PictureProject. Has anyone else seen this issue?
Also, any NEF that I have previously edited and saved in Nikon Capture Editor, do not display any of the changes when imported into Aperture. Interesting that the Finder shows the thumbnail correctly. Has anyone else seen this issue?
    Thanks, Scott K.

I've imported a few of the NEF files I've gotten from my D2X, and for the most part, they look fine. A little darker than when displayed in Adobe Bridge and ACR, but not that much darker. This is probably just the way the image converter is interpreting the RAW data. A couple of minor levels adjustments for me, and they look fine.
As for Aperture not "seeing" the changes made to a RAW file in Nikon Capture. That may be due to the way Capture applies its changes to the file. If when you make a change, Capture simply adds the adjustments to a side car file, etc., and doesn't change the original RAW file (which it should never do), then Aperture is only reading the original RAW data. The side car info is not understood by Aperture. At least not now.
This is pretty much the same way ACR works.

  • NEF file corruption in A3???

I have a NEF file taken on a D3 (fw: 2.02) that opens and displays fine in the latest View NX software (v 1.5.2) on Macintosh OS/X 10.6.2 ( Intel Duo Core 2) . After importing into A3, it "initially" displays fine. But after viewing the file and going back to the "Browser", the NEF file is corrupted and displays as a black square with (sometimes)random colored streaks. Most NEFS go in w/out a problem. But I have seen a few of these. Anyone seeing the same???

Using Aperture 3. Tried rebuild of thumbnails. No good. The file master can be exported (as a NEF) and viewed correctly in View NX, but it shows up "strange" in Aperture. After the rebuild, it came up looking like "snow" on a TV that was tuned to a non-active channel.

  • NEF Files Corrupting in Bridge

Am new to Mac OS, and on clicking an image to open in CS6, the file gets corrupted? Any one can help resolve this issue.
(Currently using IMac 21.5 inch with latest Yosemite OS [includes all the updates])

Actually, its Nikon's NX-D which was corrupting the files, they have sent me a patch to update, and it remains to be seen if any more files get corrupted.
I had transferred all my files from SD card to external HD, which I was using to work on.
It seems Nikon are lately good at having problems rather than not having.

  • .NEF files not opening in CS6 from Nikon D3200

    Please help...
I have recently taken a load of photos on a Nikon D3200 in .NEF format... I am running CS6 and have ACR 7.1 (which is the suggested software and Camera Raw pluggin according to Nikon's website) but I am unable to open the Raw files. I just get a message stating; 'Photoshop cannot open this file' and then suggestions to make sure I have the latest Camera Raw update installed - which I do!
How can I access these files without having to resort to using NX2 as I want to edit the images directly in Photoshop?

            • Drains the camera battery
            • Runs the risk of the software you're using to open the images writing to the card and destroying the format
            • Runs a small but significant risk of USB power frying the camera

  • Pls help. My Camera Raw, CS6 and Lightroom won't read the NEF files from D610.

I recently upgraded to Nikon D610 and the NEF files were not readable from my old version of Camera Raw, CS6 and Lightroom. So downloaded the recommended upgrades and I now have Camera Raw 8.4.0.199; Lightroom 5.3; CS6 13.01. But still did not read my D610 NEF's. Please help. Thanks.

oh wait, i got it. Just in case for those who will have the same scenario. I downloaded the NEF files from my D610 using the old ViewNX 2.1 software and that was the cause of incompatibility. So i upgraded my ViewNX to 2.9 and downloaded my images again. And it worked this time.

  • LR 4 V 4.4:  Doesn't recognize Nikon D610 NEF files.  What is the fix for this?

I have Lightroom 4, version 4.4 and it will not recognize the Nikon D610 NEF files.  This version recognizes my Nikon D800 NEF files.  What is wrong and what is the fix?  Thanks.

I would expect lr6 to come out any day now though. Perhaps an idea is to use dng converter in the mean time? Don't want you to have to spend money twice in a short time.

  • Is this a sensible workflow for Nikon NEF files?

    Hi,
I'm new to the world of digital SLRs having received a Nikon D40 for Christmas. After comparing Aperture 2 and Lightroom 2, I've decided to go with Aperture, as I already use Logic Pro so like the user interface and (I know a lot of people don't agree) I prefer the way Aperture renders the Nikon NEF files without extra adjustment. I'm also evaluating Capture NX 2, but am undecided as to whether I need it at this point.
Up until now I've been using Nikon Transfer to transfer the photos to my iMac, and View NX to view them. I like the automatic naming of folders in Transfer, plus being able to see Nikon's interpretation of the raw files. I've then been importing the photos as referenced files into Aperture for proper cataloguing, etc.
Is this a good approach? I'm a hobby photographer, mostly landscapes and townscapes, and deal with hundreds rather than thousands of images.
I'm a bit confused by all the options, so any advice would be very welcome!
    Chris

Is this a sensible workflow for Nikon NEF files? YES!
I shoot Nikon NEF files and use Aperure exclusively with occasionally a little blending of layers made from versions of the same raw file (to improve the dynamic range a little more).
You like Nikon Transfer's "automatic nameing of folders" Check out the Subfolders drop down menu in the Import Window in Aperture; you can do that and much more too.
"...plus being able to see Nikon's interpretation of the raw files." You need to choose between the Nikon route and the Aperture route I think. You don't drive from A to B in one brand of car and then go back and do it in another brand of car just in case it might be better do you?!
"I'm a hobby photographer, mostly landscapes and townscapes, and deal with hundreds rather than thousands of images" Can you keyword images and then use them to sort and group images in View NX? You can in Aperture.
From my humble experience as a Nikon owner using Aperture for two years I suggest you use Aperture to download, organise and edit your raws. I prefer referenced so that I can archive large numbers of Raws to free disk space and for protection but still search the previews or do a keyword searches. I used to use Capture NX to process any files that needed more work but now that Aperture2 is so good and has so many plug-ins I have left the slow, clunky Nikon Prog' alone. Be brave and jump in to Aperture. It is great once you are in!

  • Purchased new camera nikon d7100 and camera raw will not open any nef files, talked to tech support and they assured me an update would fix issue, did update and have  same issue still

I have photoshop cs5 and after purchasing a nikon d7100, photoshop will not open any of the nef files like it did with my nikon d90, I contacted support and they assured me after update that issue would be resolved...still not resolved, any suggestions?

    Good day!
Please check this list to see which version of ACR supports the camera:
Camera Raw plug-in | Supported cameras
Then please check your version (Photoshop > About Plug-In > Camera Raw).
As you should see your version is not up to the task.
You can either buy a license for a more current version of Photoshop (CS6 is still available) or switch to the … Cloud License model or use the free DNG Converter.

  • How to import NEF files from a Nikon Scanner?

I am not able to import Nikon NEF files which are generated by the Nikon Scan 4 software.
Anyone has had this problem, and did he/she found the solution (or the walkaround?

The Nikon Scan 4 raw format is not supported by Aperture, see the list of supported cameras:  http://www.apple.com/aperture/specs/raw.html
As a work-around, save your scans in another lossless format, e.g., as TIFFs.

  • The following NEF files were not imported because they could not be read.

Had to reinstall LR 3.3 and when importing NEF files from Nikon D90 the following message appeared,
"Some import operations were not performed.
The following files [NEF] were not imported because they could not be read"
Windows 7 user w/administrator rights.  Assume files are not corrupt.  Able to see thumbnails fine.

Move the files to a local drive, or use a card reader. Don't read directly from the camera if you are having problems.
Previews outside of Lightroom prove nothing, because most apps, including Explorer, just read the embedded preview made by the camera. Lightroom can be a good litmus test because it reads most of the image information and makes its own preview. During this process it is finding the file corrupt.  Lightroom does not write to proprietary files (in most cases) so if the file is failing to be read, then it is the file that is the problem, not Lightroom.
Make sure you inspect all the parts of the import chain to rule out a bad cable or something.
