NEF Files and Lightroom 2

If there are any Nikon D700 users out there, it would be really helpful.
I find that somehow Lightroom is "correcting" the brightness etc of my NEF files when I import them.
What is the best way to retain the quality of NEF (RAW) as I edit my photos?
Thank you.

  • Nikon D810 NEF files and Lightroom 4

I just got a Nikon 810 -- and is it true it's not supported by Lightroom 4?

Camera Raw plug-in | Supported cameras
The D810 was first supported in Lightroom 5.6 so, if you want to import D810 Raw files into Lightroom, you'll have to pay to upgrade to Lightroom 5, if your computer can run it.
Support for new cameras is never retrospectively added to older versions of Lightroom.
Your other (free) option is to download the free Adobe DNG converter, convert all D810 Raw files to DNG format then import the DNGs into Lightroom 4

  • Major problem: I can not export NEF files from Lightroom

This is just plain weird: I can't export NEF files from Lightroom 2. I can export any other file format, but not NEF. With Lightroom 1 this was no problem.
It makes no difference whether I choose the export command with my mouse, via the menu or with a key stroke - nothing happens.
    Lightroom version 2.0
    Camera Raw version 4.5.0.175
    Camera Nikon D3
    Photoshop CS3 version 10.0.1
    MacOsX version 10.5.4
I've called Adobe, and they simply don't know. I have reinstalled Lightroom 2 with no succes. Restarting, repairing permissions, nothing helps.
Any ideas will be greatly appreciated.

Marsel, your language is confusing, First, you cannot 'export' NEFs to PS. You can send a copy there from within LR as a tif or psd.
Exporting per se takes place through the Library module under the Export function. When Nef's are exported by choosing 'original' in the export dialogue, the file is the 'original' NEF accompanied by an XMP. That Nef, if opened directly in PS from your file system should appear in the Camera Raw window, where you can make whatever new edits on it you want or change the original adjustments you made in LR. Then, once you open that file in PS from the Camera Raw window, any further work you do will be pixel editing. That work can then be saved in a number of formats, but not as a NEF.
Transferring files to PS from LR for editing is another matter. That sends a copy of the original NEF, including LR adjustments to PS as either a Tiff or a PSD (your choice via the dropdown). After you have edited that Tiff or PSD in PS and hit save, it will send a copy back to LR as a Tiff or PSD, which will appear next to the original nef.
These procedures work perfectly on both my windows 32 and 64 bit machines with LR2 and 2.1. with all my NEFs from several camera models.
When you say 'export' do you really mean sending a copy to PS or do you mean 'Export' as LR defines that term?

  • How do I import iPhoto raw (NEF) files into Lightroom 3.6?

how do I import iPhoto raw (NEF) files into Lightroom 3.6?

You will need an application that can convert those pcd files into one that iPhoto supports, mainly jpeg. GraphicConverter is supposed to support many, many formats and might just support the pcd. If so you could use it to convert them to jpegs.
There's an automator workflow that I've put into an application that will take many image files and convert them into jpeg with the RGB color profile. I've never tried it on the Kodak files but you can give it a try. It's called +*Convert to JPG and Embed sRGB profile*+ and can be downloaded from Toad's Cellar. Make a copy of a couple of files and see if it will work. If so then you can batch convert folders of the files at once by dragging them onto the application.
I believe GC can do batch conversions but am not familiar with the application.

  • I re-downloaded my Photoshop recently and Adobe Bridge no longer displays my Nikon NEF files and Camera Raw will not open them.

I re-downloaded my Photoshop recently and Adobe Bridge no longer displays my Nikon NEF files and Camera Raw will not open them.  I get a message saying that Camera Raw does not support my camera type but it always has in the past.  The bridge no longer shows the picture view of my NEF files.  These are Nikon NEF files from the Nikon 5100 DSLR camera.  How do I fix this?

When you re-installed Photoshop, you also re-installed the version of Camera Raw which shipped with Photoshop - in other words you reverted to an older version of Camera Raw which does not support the D5100.

The D5100 was first supported in Camera Raw version 6.4.

  • I take a .NEF file and a .JPG file with every click. When I transfer the files using a flash drive to another computer I never get all of the files to transfer. I get some of the .NEF and some of the .JPGs but not all

I take a .NEF file and a .JPG file with every click. When I transfer the files using a flash drive to another computer I never get all of the files to transfer. I get some of the .NEF and some of the .JPGs but not all. How come?

If you're exporting a project then you'll only get the images in that project. Also if any of the masters are referenced then you won't get those masters unless you check Consolidate masters into exported library
It might be best if you started from the beginning and explained what it is your are trying to do and how you're going about doing it. Also a description of you're hardware/software setup would be helpful.

  • Can't open NEF files in Lightroom...why?????

I recently replaced my Canon with a Nikon D5000.
First test of taking photos and I could not upload the RAW (nef) files to my computer--either directly into my pictures or into lightroom.  Figured that out by downloading the NEF Codec, which allowed me to view my photos on my computer as thumbnails, attempts to open said Windows does not recognize this file.  Okay.  So, double-clicked an image, took me Lightroom and I selected "import" to be given the "this file is unsupported or damaged."  I have tried EVERRYTHING I can think of, cannot get these files to open.  I will say I am fairly new to using Lightroom beyond the basics, but I had no problem importing RAW files from my canon.
Is there some sort of setting I need to change to allow these files to be opened in lightroom???  I tried copying from file and copying as a DNG--neither worked.
Help would be appreciated very much!!  I have spent the past two hours in frustration trying to figure this out, no one seems to have a clue.

And your version of LR is ...?
LR supports the D5000 in the latest v2.5, AFAIK.

  • Importing .NEF files into Lightroom 4.4

    Hi All,
I am running lightroom 4.4 and camera raw 7.4.  I can't seem to import a .NEF file.  I normally shoot Canon and have no problems with the .CR2 file.  The error message I get is that "The file is not recognized by the raw format support in Lightroom. (1)"    When I check for updates, it says that my software is up-to-date.  My guess is that I need to update camera raw but I don't if I can do that wit the version of lightroom that I have.  So my questions are the following:  Is there a way for me to update the camera raw version without having to upgrade from LR 4.4?  Is there another way that I can get this to work?
    Thanks
    Wesley

NOt sure which one is troubeling you.
As soon as you convert from RAW to some other file system, things are locked, so you only have the possibility to create a preset in lightroom that fits what you're expectiong to receive.
In many cases it makes more sense to shoot in jpg and get the Picture Style right in the camera, you have many options in the D810, as a D800-user I know.
The reason I upgraded to LR5 was also the change to the new D800.
You will have a better and faster workflow in LR5 with the big files and some better possibilities than in LR4 ...
The upgrade to LR5 is not as expensive as your D810 was
Many people are selling their key for less than 50$ ... I think this is quite fair and saves you a lot of time(=money) as you will be stuck in the DNG-workaroung in future for every RAW you shoot.

  • Nikon NEF thumbnails and Lightroom

I am trying out Adobe Lightroom and the Nikon NEF files from my D70s are imported directly into Lightroom just as I had hoped they would be. However, I am flying blind when it comes to seeing the thumbnail previews of those same files "before" I do the actual importing.
Only the "NEF icon" shows up in the directory where the files are located, so I really don't have the ability to choose which file I wish to import into Lightroom unless I look at them in Adobe bridge first. This is a little inconvenient to have to do that.
Also If I do have a file in "CS2 raw", I don't have an option to send it directly to Lightroom... only to CS2 itself.
If anyone can help with some advice here, I'd appreciate it.
    Thanks,
    Ron

  • Nikon D600 NEF files and Photoshop CS3

    Hi,
I am using Photoshop CS3 and cannot upload Nikon D600 NEF files--obviously a gap between the two debuts.  Are there any suggestions, or am I stuck upgrading?
    Thanks

You could get Lightroom 5, then output your files as tiffs to be opened in CS3.  I haven't used the standalone DNG converter, so I'm not sure if that gives you the option to save as a tiff also.  You could try the dng converter first to see if you can save as another file type, or use a legacy DNG version that is conpatable with CS3.

  • NEF Files in Lightroom 5.7

I am running Lightroom 5.7 and want to import NEF files from a Nikon D750 directly into LR.  How do I do that?

    You want the Lightrtoom forum:
    Photoshop Lightroom <===
Lightroom does not use the Adobe Camera Raw plug-in; it has a raw converter engine extremely similar to ACR (Adobe Camera Raw) but it's a different animal.
That Nikon camera model, the D750, has been supported since Lr 5.7.  Inquire at the Lr what you are doing wrong.

  • Importing Nef files in lightroom

I am shooting Raw (NEF) using Nikon NX as my main editor. I have just got LR which I would like to use as my main DAM. When I tried to import my Nef files it looks like LR imports them but does not recognized any of the adjustment that I had made and save in NEF. It show the files adjusted briefly and then revert to the original aspect without the adjustments made.
    Any idea ?
    L

Yeah, well go talk to Nikon...see, Nikon NX is using NIKON's proprietary SDK...and nothing that is done in NX will show up in Lightroom because Adobe uses their Camera Raw pipeline...

  • How to open NEF files in lightroom 4.4 ?

im using Lightroom v4.4 how can i open NEF files to edit ?

You have to update you LR 4.4 version to LR5.6. Since this version LR is able to open nef - files from Nikon's D810.
The other way is to convert the nef-files to dng.
