NEF Files Cant Be Read

updated to lightroom 3.5 wont read my NEF files. PLEASE HELP i have been at this for hours. How to I Import my photos from my D300?

So as soon as you updated to LR3.5 it quit working but used to work with LR3.4 or has something else also changed like an OS upgrade or new user profile?
It may be that LR 3.5 is using a different OS function to read from the camera which isn’t compatible, anymore, or something else may be coincidentally be going on.
Can you copy the files from the camera to your hard drive, successfully using Finder or Explorer, depending on your OS?
If you can copy files to your hard-drive and import from there and they work ok, then it may be either a cable issue or some OS-level-interface change in LR.
Do you have a card-reader to see if that works?
Does the camera have any USB-mode like PTP and Mass Storage where only one does what you want for copying RAW files?

Upgraded to deal with D800 nef files - disappointed at this stage
Others are not having trouble so it appears like something I am doing or not doing that is the problem

LR4.2 and ACR 7.2 will open D800 files, as will LR 4.1 and ACR 7.1 and even ACR 6.7.with CS5. The files may be corrupted.
Have you used any software to copy the files from the card to the computer hard-drive, other than LR or Windows Explorer?
To test whether the files are corrupted coming off the card, try some sample D800 files from DPReview’s site, and if those work but the files from your camera don't the files from your camera are corrupted. The main issue people have had is that they've used an old Nikon Transfer V1 which trashes the headers of the newest Nikon cameras in ways that make them unrecognizable to Adobe software. Another issue could be some USB drivers that are a bit iffy. A suggestion would be to use Windows Explorer to copy files from your memory card to your computer's C drive then try importing from there.

NEF files cannot be read

I am running 1.5.2 and have updated the DigitalCameraRawuniversal upgrade. It tells me that no upgrade is required. But I cannot access NEF files.
Any idea what is wrong?

If you're on a PPC machine, try the PPC raw update instead of the Universal one. Despite the name, the Universal update did not install on my PPC machine when I tried it.

M2T files cant be read with AA CS6 (Mac)

Hi, I gave osmeone some M2T files. Some were from a Z7 and some from a Datavideo DN 60 recorder (which was connected to a Z1). The person I gave them to said he could not read them in After Effects CS6 on Mac. Anyone got any ideas how I has resolve this.

Maybe you can rename the extension, but I wouldn't. Working in AE is all about preserving image quality, and mpeg files are lossy. I'd transcode to a better codec first.

4.0 layout files cant be read by 4.1 and vice versa?!?

I have just learned that all my videoTs folders that I have built in studio pro 4.0 cannot be formated in DVDSP 4.1 and vice versa. This is extremely frustrating and has limited the efficiency having both a G5 workstation and a Xeon workstation should yield.
Any one know why this is?

Opening .NEF files in Bridge and converting them to .jpeg files for Photoshop CS3

I currently have CS3 on one of my computers, and CS2 on my other. I cannot open my .NEF files into Photoshop, even after I try to convert them through image processor. It tells me that it cannot be done. On one of my computers, I cannot even open the images in Bridge. I know that my programs are outdated. Do I need to download something to make it all compatible and begin to work?

See my reply to a later simplified version of your question. I don't think that either iPhone or iPad recognize RAW files such as NEFs. And the iPhone is not designed to be a mass storage device like a portable flash or portabel hard drive for temporary storage of files, if that's what you're after. As I mentioned in my previous reply, I have an iPad and have been experimenting with it as a tool for photography, hoping that it would be a nice travel tool for backing up and viewing photos from my Nikon dslr. But both the iPad and iPhone just are not set up to do that well. Both show photos nicely, but organization of photos is very frustrating since you can't create albums on the iPhone or iPad, but only back on your sync computer. (There is one very powerful photo organization app called SortShots, but you import photos to it and it organizes and stores the images wtihin the app not using the native photo app. It doesn't work with NEFs either.) I don't know of any RAW processing software for either device.

Lightroom doesn't read Nikon D700's nef files Help!

Anyone know a way to get Nikon's D700 nef files into Lightroom 2 ? The only way I can even get an image in there is to convert it to a tiff in Nikon's Capture NX2 and export it. Is Adobe going to provide an update for this any time soon? I have the Nikon NX2 program for a 60 day free trial. I really don't want to purchase or switch to it. Solutions anyone?

Hi,
The D7100 requires ACR 7.4 to read the NEF files.
You would need Photoshop Elements 11 to be able to install that ACR or version 12 which has it in already
You could get Lightroom but if you do any manipulation of images using layers and the like, you might still need an editor like the Elements editor. Lightroom doesn't have facial recognition if you use that facility.

Why cant I import my Nikon D800E NEF files in LR 4.3 - just started recently -I have been doing the same thing for months and never had a problem. "unable to copy a file to location"

Thanks, but no I do have plenty of space. What I just did was to move the NEF files off of my card and into the location I wanted them. I then just did an import move to the same location. This is just all very odd because it always had worked fine in the past. I do appreciate you trying to help.

I recently upgraded to Nikon D610 and the NEF files were not readable from my old version of Camera Raw, CS6 and Lightroom. So downloaded the recommended upgrades and I now have Camera Raw 8.4.0.199; Lightroom 5.3; CS6 13.01. But still did not read my D610 NEF's. Please help. Thanks.

oh wait, i got it. Just in case for those who will have the same scenario. I downloaded the NEF files from my D610 using the old ViewNX 2.1 software and that was the cause of incompatibility. So i upgraded my ViewNX to 2.9 and downloaded my images again. And it worked this time.

Can't read NEF files in PS CS4 w/ Nikon D600

Have new Nikon D600 and CS 4; read Adobe Camera Raw 7.2 is the one to download. Did that but still can't read my NEF files. Is there another version i should be using? Thanks!

Specific versions of ACR only work with certain versions of Photoshop.
The ACR 7.2 will only work with CS6.
You should remove ACR 7.2 for your CS4 because it will never work. Also having more than one version of ACR can screw things up.
Do you still the ACR of CS4? I believe that 5.7 is the newest that works with CS4.
You can download this from Adobe but read carefully all the instructions.
Older verions of ACR are never updated to deal with newer cameras.
To be able to open your Nikon D600 NEFs you have to use a slight workaround.
Download Adobe DNG Converter 7.3 (note DNG not ACR)
With this installed you can convert your new NEFs for your D600 into the Digital Negative Format (DNG) which then can be opened in older versions of ACR like yours.
Its a 2 step process, but it is the only way when dealing with newer cameras and older version of Photoshop.
Note that in the DNG converter you convert the folder that contains the NEFs rather than attempting to convert a single NEF.

PS CS3, Camera Raw 4.6 Update and Nikon D810 NEF File Reading Issue

Currently Have Photoshop CS3 & Adobe Bridge CS3 2.1.1.9.
According to Adobe, Camera Raw 4.6 supports Nikon D810 NEF files. I have downloaded Camera Raw 4.6 Update. When
I try to open Nikon D810 NEF files, I get Photoshop CS3 error that says
"cannot complete request your because it is not the right kind of
document. These NEF files wont open in Adobe Bridge at all. What am I doing wrong?

Before I purchased, let me get your thoughts on another option that just occurred to me which involves:
1)Editing my D810 NEF files in LR 5.6, which I have, then exporting/saving the edited files as JPEGs.
2) Doing any additional editing, as necessary (i.e. that might require layering or selections..etc) , with the JPEGs with Bridge or PS CS3.
This method wont involve any additional software purchase now.. right? Am I missing anything. here? Since my final output to my customers are JPEGs any way, wont this work? Will I be at any disadvantage. Am I missing anything. here?
