NEF files not opening in camera raw in CS5

I have lightroom 3.2 and photoshp CS5 extended
I am running if 64 bit in Windows 7
If I try to open a .nef file from lightroom usinf crtl-e it does not open in the raw editor. it goes directly to what I would call the jpeg editor.
Now can I get my .nef files to open from lightroom into CS5?
If I open the .nef file from bridge it opens in camera raw just fine, or if I open it from windows explorer it opens in camera raw.
Help! this is very frustrating!!

If LR is 3.2 and ACR is 6.2 (or they are otherwise synchronized to an older or newer version) then LR will tell PS to use ACR behind the scenes to render the file on the way into PS w/o having to go to an intermediate file and w/o seeing the ACR interface. LR does not render anything, ACR does, but you don't see it, except maybe a progress bar if it takes too long.
The adjustments in LR are the same as ACR so there's no need to show the ACR interface, right? When LR and PS are being used together, LR is meant to be the keeper of the adjustments in its database that ACR knows nothing about. If the ACR UI was visible and you tweaked something in ACR after coming out of LR it wouldn't get stored back into the LR database unless you synchronized the folder, later, and things would be a confusing mess.
Alternatively, if the LR and ACR version's aren't synced up, then LR may indeed render a TIF or PSD for PS to open, but again w/o ACR doing anything. So in no circumstance of LR-PS integration should you see the ACR plug-in when you tell LR to open into PS.

.psd files dose not open with Camera Raw

I noticed that if you have a ".psd" file even if it is Flatten, it will not open in camera raw. I can easily save it to a Tiff or other formats and open it in camera raw, but I wonder why .psd file dose not open in camera raw

Yes, Trevor, you can indeed opened a non-layered PSD in Adobe Camera Raw—at least in perpetual-license CS6 and earlier, I don't know about the Cash Cow subscription version 14.x which I'm not going anywhere near.
What you cannot do is open a PSD in Camera Raw by double clicking on it. You just have to go through File > Open menu item and its dialog box.
Once you are in the Open dialog box, select the PSD file you want to open, go to the File Format button on the lower left-hand corner of said dialog box and from the list of formats available in the pop-up menu choose Camera Raw. The Open button on the lower right will become active and you can then open your file in Adobe Camera Raw.
Just be sure not to choose the "Photoshop Raw" format from that list of formats in the pop-up menu. "Photoshop Raw" has nothing to do with digital photography at all; it's an ancient, obsolete file format that no one should be using these days.

You need to tell iphoto to send raw files out of iphoto or it will make its own conversion and send a pre-converted file. Go to the iphoto preferences>advanced and turn on this checkbox:

What is the screen resolution you have set?
On most windows systems you can right click on the desktop and choose Screen Resolution or Properties>Settings to find out the the screen resolution.

Tiff previously edited in ACR will not open in Camera RAW from Bridge

Yes, I have googled this and found instances going back to 2010 with no satisfactory answer. I have Photoshop 5.1 and the latest ACR and Bridge that work with it. 2011 MAC Mini 10.8.2.
I scanned a landscape oriented printed email image at 800 spi as a portrait orientation and saved it as a tiff. I opened this tiff in Preview and decided it needed more than minor tweaks so I opened it in ACR from Bridge, made a few adjustments and saved it. I thought I could see what I was doing better if it was in landscape orientation again so I opened it in Preview and rotated 90 deg CCW, saved it as a tiff. Going to Bridge I found Open in Camera Raw greyed out. I went back to Preview to see if I could get what I needed in its Tools while viewing it in landscape. Adjustments took forever this time, so I gave up and took a look at the image characteristics. Rotating in Preview had changed the image size to 3.3333...... times larger at 240 ppi still aRGB, still a tiff. This has never happened before, including slow adjustments
I duplicated the rotated file and changed it back to 800 ppi and normal size, went to Bridge, Camera Raw still greyed out. Original unrotated image
that had been edited in ACR and saved will still open in ACR.
All kinds of strange things have happened since updating to 10.8.2, but I don't think this is one of them because of the complaints I have seen that date back to 2010. I did a full maintenance routine, i e cleared RAM, reboot in single user with fsck -fy, repaired permissions, back up with SuperDuper which repairs permissions again. Then I tried Bridge again, original will open, rotated won't.
Anyone know the answe?

The answer is that making edits in ACR and saving it creates layers in the tiff and Bridge will then not open it again in ACR unless you flatten it. I still don't know why Preview increased the image size by 3.333.....x or why ACR increased the tiff file size by 2.6x and why the flattened tiff is 2x the file size of the original scan but the image dimensions are the same. This stuff apparently is above the pay grade of anyone in google, too.

LR3 DNG Edit in Photoshop Does Not Open in Camera Raw

I have LR 3.2 64 bit and CS5 v12.0.1 64 bit and Camera Raw 6.2 under Windows 7. I do 95% of my editing in Lightroom. I do occasionally choose "Edit in Photshop" and in the past a DNG or CR2 image opened in Camera Raw (at least I think that is the case). Recently however, I noticed that if I have a DNG or a CR2 file, right click, and select "Open in Photoshop..." it opens the file directly in Photoshop, not in Camera Raw. I have tried deleting my LR3 preference, deleting my CS5 preferences, and deleting both, but the behavior does not change. Does anyone have an idea to explain this?

Thanks for the quick response. For some reason I was thinking that it had happened that way in the past, but now that I think about it, I guess there would really be no reason for it to open in Camera Raw. Sorry for the unnecessary question.

Smart Object Not Opening in Camera RAW in CS6

I've converted a JPEG to a Smart Object in CS6. When I double-click on the Smart Object icon in the Layer, it opens as a separate JPEG file. What do I need to do to get it to open in Camera RAW as Russel Brown does in this video?

I just knew that ACR can only work on Camera RAw Files and convert the camera sensor RAW data into RGB Images and use setting other then ones set into the camera, ACR can also process Jpeg and Tiff files however Camers Sensor RAW data for thes images nolonger exists in the file. I was somewhat wrong about not being able to edit normal layers in ACR this script sort of makes that posible. What it does is save information about the layers transparenct and layer mask save out the layer as a temp Tiff file and place it back in as a smart object and restor the best it can any layer mask and transparency. You preferences must be set to open Tiff in ACR. While I was somewhat wrong I was bassicly right. The script turns the layer into a Temp Tiff file and places it back in the document as a smart object layer the embedded object is a Tiff file. The temp Tiff file is nolonger needed for the smart object layer has a copy of it in its embedded object.

Opening NEF files from Aperture into Camera Raw?

Does Aperture allow opening of images directly from a project / album into Adobe Camera Raw?
Seems like it should yet I've not been successful in finding out how to do this.

As mentioned, I used to use something called iViewMedia Pro which was terrific but was bought out by Microsoft and turned into something called Expression Media. That worked until they decided to evolve away from merely being a cataloguing software. Looked into Extensis Portfolio but they want an insane amount of money for their product. Aperture seemed like it had the cataloguing features I need and so far, I don't have many complaints about it ... except one notable one: When I need to open a NEF file for editing, it opens directly into Photoshop rather than in CR.
What I'm hearing from these discussions is that there is some kind of conversion incompatibility which is a shame, but answers the question. I can only hope that Apple and Adobe will improve their products so that they are more compatible with one another.
I will, however, not hold my breath.

Cannot open NEF files from D200 in Camera Raw 4.1

I am using Photoshop CS3 with Windows XP. I have downloaded the latest Camera Raw update (4.1) and installed as directed.
I am able to open Raw files from Nikon D70 in camera raw but unable to open files from D200 - I am getting the message that it is an invalid file.
When I revert back the the previous version of camera raw I can open these files with no problem.
Can amyone advise please.

As to your issue, just a general comment, as I don't do Windows:
Even though it sounds too obvious, make sure you have properly uncompressed (unzipped) the downloaded ACR 4.1 and that you have installed it according to the instructions.

Note that you didn't say "unzipped", so forgive me for bringing it up.

Raw formats not opening in Camera Raw

Only got the software yesterday, got off to a good start, I can open Jpeg files in Camera Raw but I am not getting the same options for raw files. Camera is a nikon D90, shots download okay but appear small in the preview and I can't make them larger or do anything with them. When I highlight a raw file, the camera raw option is not available. It would appear to be something in the formats coming off the camera, Help

You may not have the right version of ACR for your system/camera.
The sort of information that would be helpful would include:
OS version
PS version number
system specs, RAM, RAM allocation

.NEF files not opening in CS6 from Nikon D3200

I have recently taken a load of photos on a Nikon D3200 in .NEF format... I am running CS6 and have ACR 7.1 (which is the suggested software and Camera Raw pluggin according to Nikon's website) but I am unable to open the Raw files. I just get a message stating; 'Photoshop cannot open this file' and then suggestions to make sure I have the latest Camera Raw update installed - which I do!
How can I access these files without having to resort to using NX2 as I want to edit the images directly in Photoshop?

.NEF files not opening with ACR in CS6

I run CS6 on my iMac with OS 10.6.8 with the ACR 7.1 update downloaded and installed. When browsing my Nikon D600 images in Bridge, thumbnails for my .NEF files load initially, but some immediately change to the stock .NEF icon. None of my .NEF files open in PS and instead I get the popup telling me I need to get the latest version of ACR. No ACR update appears under Help>Updates>Photoshop. When I do all these same actions on my MacBook Air running CS6 with ACR 7.1 on OS 10.9.4, everything works fine, all thumbnails load properly in Bridge and all .NEF files open in ACR.
-Why does it work on my laptop setup and not my desktop?
-Is there a newer version of ACR than 7.1 or is it bundled in with the newer DNG updates? I also installed DNG update 8.3 (the newest that my OS will support) and there was no change.

You need at least ACR 7.3 for the D600. Adobe stopped providing downloads after 7.1. They want you to use Help > Updates.
I'm not a Mac person, but I think OSX 10.6 might not support the latest (8.6) version of ACR. In which case, you could try this link:

Open in Camera raw grayed out for some tifs not others, bridge

I searched but could not find a solution. CSR. PC. Windows xp. In CS4 Bridge the option to open with Camera raw is grayed out in the file menu for some tifs and not others - It shows up grayed out on the file menu, but doesn't show at all when right clicking, even with the files where open with camera raw is not grayed out in the file menu. I have purged the cache, deleted all temp files, closed both bridge and photoshop and still I cannot open the tif in camera raw. It is grayed out. If I go to the pic I touched up yesterday the option is not grayed out. Does anyone know how I can fix this?

Uh, this is a forum...not an email tech support organization...
As for your issue, it's simply not clear what you are doing or what issue you have. Can you not open the scanned images via Camera Raw from within Bridge? If you can then you will need to go through each image and adjust the ACR settings before you would be able to process them. Depending on how you set up your actions, Photoshop's Batch may or may not catch settings...that part is pretty complicated.
Also, I would question your use of JPEGs vs TIFFs. I would suggest scanning as 16 bit TIFF and running those through Camera Raw...you will be loosing a lot to scan into 8 bit JPEG and then re-running through Camera Raw. You really want to be sending ACR 16 bit images...
