Nef files "unsupported format" in Elements 12, old files OK

Hi,
I've just loaded Elements 12 (upgraded from Elements 8 which I have uninstalled and no longer can find the disc). All of the Nef files I try and open are showing as "unsuported format", however older Nef files that I opened through Elements 8 open fine. I have not changed any other software or settings on my Camera since Jan, so I'm at a loss to understand why these files will not open.
They do open in Windows picture viewer, so the files are OK, and Elements does open the Jpg version of the Nef file, but obviously this is not what I want to do !

Hi,           Ok, I’ve never used the organiser, just the editor. I was going to investigate the organiser in 12 – but have not with the NEF file issues that I have hit. This may or may not have been a mistake.
I have tried your suggestion of opening files directly from the camera – and these are opening in Camera Raw just fine – however photo’s that I have already imported into windows and I try to copy back to the camera will still not open.
So the problem appears to be more related to the imported files than Camera Raw or the file itself. Interestingly “Nikon ViewNX2” will open the RAW files I have imported, but only as JPEG’s of TIFF files – so they are not completely beyond salvage !
My comment about "files opened through Elements 8 open fine". Is that the RAW files I imported before February, and opened in Elements 8, will open fine from my hard drive in elements 12 (open in Camera RAW option), it’s just those I have imported through Vista onto my hard drive since I removed elements 8 at the start of Feb will not open in elements 12. I obviously did not try and open them in * as it had been removed, so I don’t know if a Vista update is the issue, and so I would have had the same problem in elements 12, or not.
In hindsight, removing elements 8 may have been a mistake, but I’ve got an old desktop with limited hard drive space, so tend to uninstall software if i’m not using it. !
Do you think it’s worthy trying to import pictures with Elements organiser and see how that works ?
I’m off on Holiday to Cornwall and I’m hoping to come back with a load of good pictures to edit – and i don’t want to screw something up with these pictures ! Or should I just import from the Camera through Camera Raw and then save them ?
Thanks, for all of your help so far – I do at the very least now have a way of accessing my Holiday pictures, which is a huge relief.

  • Nikon D 800 - NEF file format in Photoshop Elements 9?

Just bought the Nikon D 800.  My photoshop elements 9 does not read the maximum NEF file format (7424x4924) - "wrong file type". Is there a free download for this camera in Elements 9 or do I have to upgrade to Elements 10?
    Best

No, you need to upgrade. Refer to these lists:

  • Elements 9 - NEF is "unsupported file type"

My copy of Elements 9 is no longer able to recognize Nikon RAW files.
    1. Camera model: D7000 - the same camera I've been using for over 2 years.
    2. No previous difficulty. Thousands have been imported into the Organizer, edited, etc.
    3. I uninstalled and reinstalled. No change. Still does not recognize RAW files. JPG is fine.
    4. I have installed a Windows plug-in that can view the RAW files. The files do not appear to be corrupted.
    5. McAffee security software is installed and running.
    6. OS is Windows 7 SP1.
Is this a known issue? Is there a known malicious software that could be infecting the machine and causing this problem?

To expand on the Nikon software problem, transferring with an older Nikon Transfer or even viewing with an older View NX can change headers in NEF files that makes the unrecognizable to Adobe software.  I don’t know if the situation extends back to the D7000 or not.  You can avoid this potential problem by using the Nikon Transfer/ViewNX that came with your camera or one that is even newer than your camera.
If you have uninstalled and re-installed PSE, you will need to re-update your Camera Raw plug-in to the latest available for PSE9 because installing would reset it back to the oldest version for PSE9.
I think the last version for PSE9 is ACR 6.5:

  • Why won't Elements 11 accept NEF files from my D810?

I just purchased a D810 and cannot upload NEF files to Elements 11. I have a D7000 that uploads NEF with no problems. I get through the loader okay, but when it attempts to load to Organizer I get an error message stating "Nothing was imported. The file(s) or folder(s) selected to import did not contain any supported file types, or the files are already in this catalog".
For the reason, I get a repeating message for each file stating, "The file is damaged or is in a format that cannot be included in Elements Organizer."
JPG files from the D810 upload okay.

    Hi,
Each camera model has it's own variant of the raw file. The raw file from the D810 is slightly different from the D7000 raw file and so Adobe has to release a new version of Camera Raw to read the new files.
The D810 requires Camera Raw 8.6 which is not compatible with Photoshop Elements 11.
    You have two main choices
    1) Buy Photoshop Elements 13
    2) Use the free DNG converter to take the NEF files and converts them to DNG files (a universal raw format) - the DNG files can then be used by Photoshop Elements 11
Both these solutions will not work on the old operating system like XP or Vista.

  • Unable to open NEF files in Photoshop Elements

I have recently purchased a Nikon 6100 and am unable to open the RAW files, saved in NEF format to Photoshop Elements 11 despite running all Adobe Updates.  Can anyone advise how I can do this please. Thanks

    Hi Nh239,
Download and install the free Adobe DNG converter to convert your NEF files to the Adobe universal Raw format and the files will open in all versions of PSE (keep your original NEF’s as backups and for use in Nikon software)
Windows download click here DNG Converter 7.2
Mac download click here DNG Converter 7.2
You can convert a whole folder of NEF images in one click.
    Thanks

You need Adobe camera raw version 8.7. Unfortunately your software pre-dates the camera. ACR 8.7 is only compatible with PSE13. But it is possible to download and install the free DNG converter to convert your raw files to the Adobe universal Raw format and the files will open in all versions of PSE (keep your originals as backups and for use in the camera manufactures software)
Windows download (.exe file) click here DNG Converter 8.7

  • Nikon Nef files in Elements 10

    Hi Guys.
I have a Nikon D5000 and i shoot in NEF.Nikons version of raw. I'm thinking of purchasing Photoshop Elements 10 this weekend. Can anyone tell me if Photoshop Elements10 can open  Nikon NEF Files or do i need to download other software to get it to open or do i have to convert to some other file format..

Support for your camera was added in Camera Raw 5.4 which means support will be available in PSE7 and automatically in versions 8, 9 & 10.

  • Photoshop Elements 8.0 will not open Nikon D610 RAW .NEF files

I am using Photoshop Elements 8.0; just purchased a Nikon D610 and when I try and open the RAW .NEF files I get error message saying wrong file type.

    Hi,
Nikon D610 is supported in ACR 8.3 (adobe camera raw version 8.3) while PSE8 is quite old. You may convert to DNG and then process converted DNGs in PSE8. For 8.3 DNG converter, see http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=5694

  • Elements 6.0 (Mac) and NEF Files

Does there exist a set of instructions regarding Elements handling of NEF images?  I see from a number of discussion threads that the issue of Elements not reading NEF files is somewhat common. But no where does thewre seem to be a consistent solution.
Some say I must update the Camera Raw file.  Others say it should work, as is.  Others say I'll have to update the plug-ins. The Elements user manual says to simply open the file.  Pardon me if my frustration is showing  but there seems to be a ton of conflicting information.
I have a 1 year old iMac with the latest OS upgrades, a new Nikon D90, and the trial version of Elements 6, downloaded 3 days ago.   When I try to open a NEF image I get the error message saying the file type is not recognized.
I'm reluctant to spend money for Adobe support on a product I'm just auditioning. Can anyone tell me if a single source of information exists telling me what I should do?  I'm comfortable with Elements and would like to stay with it, but not if I have to go through a great deal of trouble.  Thanks for any help.

The trial version of elements contains a very old ACR plug-in. You need to update it. You can't update PSE from the Adobe updater. You must go here, download ACR and install it per the instructions given.

  • Photoshop Elements 10 not recognizing .NEF files from Nikon D3200 camera

I've been using Photoshop Elements 10 to edit raw .NEF files from my Nikon D3000 with no problems.  Recently I purchased a Nikon D3200 and I shoot in raw .NEF files using that also but Photoshop Elements 10 will not recognize those .NEF files to edit. The error I'm getting is saying the file type is not correct.  Any way to correct this?

For the D3200 you have two alternatives:
    (1) Upgrade to PSE 11. (2) Download and install the free Adobe DNG converter to convert your NEF files to the Adobe universal Raw format and the files will open in all versions of PSE (keep your original NEF’s as backups and for use in Nikon software)

It’s not possible to update PSE7 beyond ACR 5.5. You have two alternatives:

  • I have Elements 9 and cannot download NEF files from my new Nikon1 v1, any help appreciated

I have Elements 0 and cannot download NEF files from my new Nikon1 V1, any help is appreciated.

PSE 9 is too old for any of the versions of ACR that support the 1 V1. You have three options:
    1. Upgrade to PSE 10 or 11.
    2. Use the Nikon software to convert the raw files and send the resulting tiffs to PSE for further editing.
    3. Try the free Adobe DNG converter, and you should be able to open the resulting DNGs in your version of ACR.

  • Why is my Photoshop CS3 not recognizing my NEF file from my new Nikon D7100, but will recognize NEF's from my old Nikon D90?

Help... Why is my Photoshop CS3 not recognizing my NEF file from my new Nikon D7100, but will recognize NEF's from my old Nikon D90?

Because many of the camera makers slightly alter their versions of their raw format whenever they release a new camera model.
Nikon does it, Canon does it, and also several other camera makers.
There is not a single version of NEF that all Nikon cameras use, nor a single version of CR2 for all Canon models.
Here is a list of supported cameras and the required ACR plugin needed to open the raw files.
Camera Raw plug-in | Supported cameras
Versions of ACR are specific to each version of Photoshop.
Older versions of PS cannot use the latest version of ACR.
You need to download the latest version of Adobe DNG Converter.
This will convert your newer 7100 files to DNGs that can then be opened in older versions like CS3.
Be aware DNG only works on folders of files, not individual files. Select the FOLDER not a single file

  • Elements Organizer shows different timestamps in JPEG and NEF files of the same photo

    Hi,
I generally use the option of my Nikon D5000 to store pictures in NEF and JPEG format. While both files show the same time stamp under properties - as one may expect (click on a photo, press right mouse button, last entry of context menu "show properties"), Photoshop Elements Organizer 9 shows different time stamps (when option "details" is chosen in menu "view"). The NEF-file always has a time stap which is exactly two hours later than the time stamp of the corresponding JPEG-file and which - as mentioned - does not correspond to the time stamp stored within the piuctures properties entries. Does anybody has an idea how to change this? Or might this be a bug of the software?
    Thanks

Yes.  Create a smart album with the criteria Photo is RAW:
Then you can select all of the photos in the smart album and use the Events ➙ Create Event menu option to move all of the RAW photos into a new event.
