NEF Files w/ D610

Had LR 4.4.  Bought the D610 and RAW files wouldn't import.  Got LR 5, then 5.3 and they still won't import.  Just got one image to import, but it took 22 minutes for ONE image.  Took a few more images and now they won't import again.  They are importing fine with the Nikon software, but I'd much rather use what I paid for here.

That may be the problem right there. Some versions of Nikon Transfer are known to corrupt files in such a way that Lightroom can't read them.
The bug has later been fixed, so updating may clear the issue.
Try a fresh import on a freshly formatted card, using just Lightroom. The D610 is fully supported in 5.3, so on the face of it there should be no reason for the problems you're having.

  • Pls help. My Camera Raw, CS6 and Lightroom won't read the NEF files from D610.

I recently upgraded to Nikon D610 and the NEF files were not readable from my old version of Camera Raw, CS6 and Lightroom. So downloaded the recommended upgrades and I now have Camera Raw 8.4.0.199; Lightroom 5.3; CS6 13.01. But still did not read my D610 NEF's. Please help. Thanks.

oh wait, i got it. Just in case for those who will have the same scenario. I downloaded the NEF files from my D610 using the old ViewNX 2.1 software and that was the cause of incompatibility. So i upgraded my ViewNX to 2.9 and downloaded my images again. And it worked this time.

  • My Photoshop CS5 is not reading my NEF files from my Nikon D610.

I'm also not able to update my Camera Raw. I have a MAC and  I'm using Mavericks OS.

That is correct.  Support for the D610 was added to ACR 8.3 and Lightroon 5.3.  Yon need to download Adobe DNG 8.6 converter and create DNG files for your NEF files to use CS 5 older ACR version.  The latest version of ACR the works with CS5 is ACR version 6.7

    Hi,
Nikon D610 is supported in ACR 8.3 (adobe camera raw version 8.3) while PSE8 is quite old. You may convert to DNG and then process converted DNGs in PSE8. For 8.3 DNG converter, see http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=5694

  • LR 4 V 4.4:  Doesn't recognize Nikon D610 NEF files.  What is the fix for this?

I have Lightroom 4, version 4.4 and it will not recognize the Nikon D610 NEF files.  This version recognizes my Nikon D800 NEF files.  What is wrong and what is the fix?  Thanks.

I would expect lr6 to come out any day now though. Perhaps an idea is to use dng converter in the mean time? Don't want you to have to spend money twice in a short time.

  • My new Nikon d610 NEF files will not download to my photoshop lightroom 4 & photoshop elements 11

I recently purchased a Nikon d610. I have lightroom 4 & photoshop elements 11. Neither fully updated software will read the raw NEF files from the SD card. What can I do about this?

    Hi,
The D610 was only announced at the beginning of this month. Adobe do not get advance notice of cameras and have to wait until they get their hands on a copy of the camera. Then it takes them about 2 to 3 months before they can release a new version of camera raw.
You will have wait until they have completed their work but I don't expect that will get an update for version 11 - Adobe normally only supply updates for current versions. A new DNG converter should be produced that you could use.
In the meantime, you will have to use the Nikon software.
These are my thoughts as a user and not a Adobe statement.
    Regards,
    Brian

    Thanks in advance

Often, this error message means that you have used some version of Nikon software to transfer the photos to your computer, and this has corrupted the files. There is a fix which uncorrupts the files at http://www.sno.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/fix_corrupted_nef.html
But you said you get this message when you "connect my other camera Nikon D3100", the key word being "connect", and this doesn't really fit the description I just gave. This error message normally happens after you have transferred the photos to your computer via Nikon software, not when you connect it. So ... maybe you need to explain a little more ... what exact task (what menu options, what are you clicking on, what are you trying to do) when you get this error.

  • NEF files from Nikon D610

Cannot open NEF files from Nikon D610 in Photoshop Elements 11

you need camera raw 8.3 which probably isn't compatible with pse 11.

  • Adobe DNG converter is corrupting NEF files. The color is way off and it's not the camera white balance.

I was using the converter for a few months and it was working fine. Now it will convert the files, but the color is really messed. I know it is not the white balance, because the same files convert fine to TIF files through Nikon's software. I am using this converter for Nikon d610 NEF files. Here's a sample DNG and the same image in TIF. Can anyone help? Thanks!

When you use the DNG Converter to make a DNG from an NEF, the DNG Converter applies the default Camera Raw settings.  When I open your DNG it looks fine, but when you open it, it looks off.  That is because you've some how set your Camera Raw defaults to have a bunch of customized settings specific to a particular picture, instead of having them all be normal settings.  Below you'll see what Photoshop is saying the settings of the DNG-Converted-JPG are, with the non-defaults marked in bold.  The main problems are the WB being custom and a bunch of HSL setting changes.
Here is what Photoshop reports that the JPG was created using:

To fix the problem you're gonna need to reset your camera raw defaults:
And then be careful when saving new camera raw defaults with the menu item just above, that your image has the camera raw defaults applied to it, except whatever small change you want to be the new default.

so I updated to lightroom 3.6-now i cannot import any .nef files? is that what you call progress?

    Hi,
I'm not sure why you think Lightroom 3 will support the D610 as it was only announced on October 8, 2013. Support for the D610 was released in the Lightroom 5.3 RC, see Lightroom 5.3 RC now available on Adobe Labs
If you wish to use you D610 files in Lightroom 3.6 you will need to download the Adobe DNG Converter, convert your NEF to DNG and then import into Lightroom 3.6. The DNG Converter can be downloaded from http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=106&platform=Windows
Or, better option is to upgrade to the current version of Lightroom
