NEF (nikon RAW) files are becoming Desaturated while 'viewing in Bridge'/'opening in ACR'..HELP!

i use
1)Nikon D80
2)Adobe bridge to get the images from the camera
3)ACR to retouch the the photo a lil bit.
i set 'Saturation +2' and 'contrast +2' in My camera.
I get very nice vivid tone in my images IN MY CAMERA LCD
but recently my life is in jeopardy
i dont know why but my NEF files are not that nice when i open them up in bridge.
I wasn't sure where it went wrong.
So i shot RAW+JPEG so that i get the JPEG from the camera.
and My JPEGs are perfectly OK.
lets give you guys a look what i am talking about::
this came from the camera as JPEG
and this came from the SAME camera as RAW (i saved it without any modification from ACR)
WHY? AnD WHAT IS THE SOLUTION??
EXTRA INFO YOU MAY NEED ::
my JPEG says sRGB
and my NEFs says Untagged
and in my camera setting i used sRGB...which is 'MODE3A' in my D80
And now i have some important pictures in my camera
Very important.
Is there any way to save them?(except working in ACR)

First off, the only camera settings that have any direct impact on the raw files is ISO and F stop/shutter speed. All other camera adjustments to the image are merely metadata adjustments used by the camera or camera software to process the image. Camera Raw doesn't use any of those settings at all. So, if you are shooting raw intended for processing in Camera Raw, you would do well to not use camera adjustments to the images.
As far as matching the basic default camera LCD, that's a function of knowing how to use the DNG Profiles for either Camera Raw 4.6 or 5.5. There are specific profiles intended to render certain camera makers "looks". If you wish, you can either modify your camera's "Default" in Camera Raw or use Presets to apply settings in Camera Raw or Bridge.

  • How do I import NEF (Nikon RAW file) to iphoto? It fails every time.

When I put my SD in my card reader, iphoto can preview the files on it. They are NEF format- RAW files from my Nikon DSLR camera. But when I try to import them, the import fails. How do I convert each file to JPG's without doing them separately and changing the file size? Thank you!

That may be an issue with the card.
Can you move the files from the card to a folder on the desktop, and then reformat the card with the camera.
Can you import from the desktop then?
    If not:
    As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?

  • NEF ( Nikon RAW file ) will not open in Preview

I use a Nikon camera - and in the last ~3 weeks the NEF files no longer are displayed in Preview or the finder. Older NEF photos can be displayed.
    Has something changed??
How do I correct this problem??

There are discussion threads about this problem in both OSX 10.4 and 10.5. I have the same problem, i.e., older NEF files open but more recent ones do not. No one seems to have an answer. I've followed advice about deleting the aperture .plist file from the library and re-booting. Some suggested it might have something to do with down loading directly from the camera, but I use a card reader. NEF files load fine into Aperture but won't open in Preview. Since I still use 10.4.11, thought going to 10.5 might solve the issue. But it seems not. So now as I get ready to upgrade the OS, I am wondering if quick look will let me view NEF files. My hunch is no. Guess it must be an OS issue which I hope gets fixed soon.

  • Problems Importing NEF (Nikon Raw) files

I just uploaded the Lightroom trial and also use Elements 5.0. I plugged my SD card from my D80 into the card reader and was prompted to select between uploading files to Lightroom or Elements. I chose Lightroom and received a message stating that the files could not be uploaded to the selected location on my C Drive in the "My Pictures" folder. I tried a couple of times, but received the same message. I then tried successfully importing the NEFs to Elements and was able to open them with the NEF Raw converter. Next, I attempted to import them into Lightroom from Elements, and followed the steps prompted in Lightroom. Again, the same message about being unable to import to the selected location! This is VERY frustrating! I'm a pretty technically proficient person and I can't quite figure this one out. :)
    Any help is greatly appreciated!
    Thanks!

NEF can be used with Capture [NX].
As for LR you are right, LR does only recognise NEFs from the cameras,
and only if certain edits Capture [NX] allows have not been applied.
Base adjustment seem to be alright, a handful of other tools, too, but
it's difficult to determine what you can do and what you cannot do.

I select the images I want uploaded, NEF files, click the "IMPORT" button, process bar comes up and shows work in progress, but no progress. after about 2 minutes, dialogue box appears with message: "unable to import because the following files are unreadable: NEFxxxx, etc."

  • My version of LR-5.7 (OS X 10.8.5) apparently does not save the .NEF (Nikon RAW) edits done in the basic module.

My version of LR-5.7 (OS X 10.8.5) apparently does not save the .NEF (Nikon RAW) edits done in the basic module. That means that I can correct exposure, highlights, shadows etc. but once I go to another picture and returned to the edited one the histogram (on the edited photo) and specifically the clipping triangles are white or some other color. This is normally suppose to indicate that some channel or all channels are clipped in the highlight/shadow areas. If I adjust any slider in the Basic panel even as little as one +/- value or press the J-key, the histogram will now show the original edit. Moving on to another photo and then returning to to previously edited one and again the edits are "not saved" and I have to hit the J-key or adjust a slider to see the previously edited information reflected in the histogram.
This is especially frustrating for fours reasons. If I have edited a shoot and return to it I cannot see from the clipping information whether the original edit was correct and of course I might re-edit it (to some now incorrect value). This brings up the second issue synchronization. I can't rely on it because if I go back to fine tune a specific image in the batch the triangles are white or some other color for that and every image. I have to hit the J-key to show/hide clipping or the back slash key to see before/after previews. This is the third issue which is very time consuming and inefficient regarding my workflow. The forth issue is that I have noticed that normally when an image is saved in PS, LR adds a copy of the saved version to its catalogue. I have noticed that the PS to LR saves are all wrong in terms of exposure (they are much lighter in tone) than the original LR edit and the PS edit on my screen. If I check the PS to LR photo in LR I notice that the Basic panel values have been changed and that I have to sync the image with the originally edited RAW/NEF LR file to get it to look the same.
Note 1). I am using an Apple cinema display and a calibrated Eizo ColorEdge monitor to view my NEF files. I have reverted back to using LR 4 however I am not sure if I should expect compatibility problems with Camera Raw 7.4 in LR 4 vs. Camera Raw 8.6 in LR 5.
Note 2.) I am going to do an import converting everything to .dng  to see if this is a work around.
Note 3). I would be interested in knowing if this issue is related to the PS RAW engine ver. 8.6, the Adobe created NEF calibrations or LR 5.
    Note 4). I have duplicated this issue in OS X 10.8.5, OS X 9.xx and OS X 10.10.1
Hopefully someone else has noticed this problem. Any shared information would be valuable. Thanks for the reply.

    Happy New Year!
The Develop panel Tone settings in your Dec 31 screenshot show both the Highlights and Shadows controls set to negative values (-48 and -19). For most images (such as this model shot) they should be set to opposite values (-Highlights and +Shadows). To try and duplicate your issue I used negative values for both of these controls with a similar high contrast image. I noticed that the Shadows control becomes non-linear when both the Highlights and Shadows controls are set to negative values. As I moved the Shadows control from a positive value the Shadows clipping indicator comes ON as expected. Moving the Shadows control to a value caused the clipping indicator to turn OFF and moving it further negative caused it to turn back ON again.
The following screenshots demonstrate the issue with only Highlights & Shadows controls applied as shown.
The Highlights & Shadows controls set just to the threshold of extinguishing the clipping indicators.
Moving the Shadows control toward negative causes the Shadow clipping indicator to come ON (as expected), but at-13 it goes OFF again!
Moving the Shadows control further negative causes the Shadows clipping indicator to come back ON at -33.
This is probably normal behavior for the PV2012 Image Adaptive Tone controls as they were not designed to be used way (- - or ++ Highlights & Shadows). The PV2012 Tone controls all interact with each other, which is why it is suggested to adjust them from the Top down starting with Exposure. For most images using -Highlights and +Shadows of near equal value produces good results.
I still can't duplicate the change in clipping indicators after selecting another image, so it may be unique to certain camera models and/or lighting conditions.
    SUGGESTION
Try one of the image files that exhibits this issue using the following PV2102 Tone control adjustment procedure:
Start with all of the Tone controls at their default 0 settings and adjust them from the top-down in the order shown below.
Set Exposure to correct midtone brightness ignoring the highlight and shadow areas for now. Setting Exposure slightly higher (+.25 to +.50 EV) than what looks correct for the midtones seems to work best with most images.
Leave Contrast at 0 for now. It’s usually better to adjust this after the first pass.
Adjust Highlights so that blown out areas are recovered and “fine tonal detail” is revealed.
Adjust Shadows to reveal fine detail in dark areas. For most normal images simply setting +Shadows = -Highlights (Example +50 and -50) works very well.
The Whites control sets the white clipping point, which you can see by holding down the ALT key as you move the slider. Adjust it to the point where you see clipping appear with the ALT key.
The Blacks control sets the black clipping point, which you can see by holding down the ALT key as you move the slider. Adjust it to the point where you see clipping appear with the ALT key.
Now go back and adjust the Contrast control to establish the best midtone contrast
If necessary “touch-up” the controls using the same top-down workflow.
If the issue persists I suggest Exporting an image to DNG file format with the settings that exhibit the issue and post it to Dropbox or other file download site.

  • Nikon RAW conversions are driving me crazy.

Ever since upgrading to 10.4.8 and Aperture 1.5 all of my RAW files are displaying in a very unpleasent manner. Depending on the camera the effect is different but still way off from my previous tests in June. I do realize that Aperture ignores all of the in camera settings when processing the RAW files but the difference between in camera produced jpgs and RAWs are now crazy. The worst being from my D2Hs. Those RAWs actually look like an Adobe 1998 color space image being displayed in an sRGB context. This is now a big problem.
Apple has been working on it for over a week, does anyone out there have work arounds, presets, whatever that will give me decent default results for Nikon D2H, D2X, and D200 RAW files. D2H being the worst off right now.
    Thanks
    RB

Thinking more about the issue you are experiencing, I
am curious to know how your D2X (or D2H) is
configured, relative to the following settings:
    * Color Space (sRGB or Adobe RGB); defaults to sRGB.
[The D2H may not have a separate setting for
this; instead it may be combined with the Color
    Mode.]
Color Mode (Type I, II or III); defaults to Type I.
Tone Compensation (Auto, Normal or predefined
    curve); defaults to Auto.
    I ask because a photo's resultant colors -- and
perhaps the perceived white balance -- can be
    considerably different depending on the
aforementioned settings. And the defaults are
definitely NOT what I would use, particularly for
    RAW.
In any case, after reading (and re-reading) the D2X
manual, perusing web sites, etc., etc., I have found
the following settings to be optimal for a RAW
    workflow:
    * Color Space: Adobe RGB. (The default -- sRGB --
has a smaller gamut than Adobe RGB.)
    * Color Mode: II. (The default -- type I -- is for
portrait shots. Type III is for landscapes. Type II
-- only available when utilizing Adobe RGB for the
colorspace -- is suited for a RAW workflow. Type I
and III both affect color saturation and/or tone,
while type II does not, AFAIK.)
    * Tone Compensation: Normal. (The default -- "Auto"
-- allows the camera to make changes to the tones in
an image, and said changes can be different from
    shot-to-shot...even for the same scene.)
Bottom line, Nikon's defaults -- color space sRGB,
color mode I and auto tone compensation -- can have a
significant impact on color saturation, tone/hue,
etc. And, while I would certainly like to hear
others' opinions, I definitely do not recommend
    Nikon's defaults.
As for Aperture, it does properly recognize the white
balance setting for a given image. However, I do not
believe that Aperture compensates for -- or even
recognizes -- the "Color Mode" and "Tone
Compensation" settings. This would also explain why
folks sometimes see different results in Aperture vs.
Nikon's Capture NX, for a given image.
    Anyone else?
    MacBook Pro
    17" 2.16; PowerMac G5 Dual 2.7   Mac OS X
    (10.4.8)   Camera: Nikon D2X
I think that I mentioned this before but here goes again:
D2H Color mode 1, Normal contrast, sRGB, preset WB with 5500K lights.
The corrections to get the RAW to where it should be based on known shooting conditions, comparison to the in camera JPG, and comparison to the way Nikon capture processes the RAW file are massive. Not just a little. It litterally is like taking an Adobe RGB color space image, removing the profile info, sticking an sRGB profile tag on it, opening it in PS and then making the corrections to how it should look with known reference points of lighting temp, camera WB, etc.

  • Big Colour and detail changes between Original Nikon RAW files and the images created on the Preview page!

Big Colour and detail changes between Original Nikon RAW files and the images created on the Preview page! Yes there are distinct visual changes when I preview my Nikon NEF RAW Files. Please note I do not use iPhoto at all.
If you view it as a contact sheet straight from the original folder there are no alterations but the moment you double click and want to 'Preview' it, this new preview page introduces very noticeable distortions : lighter shading goes missing and colour goes darker e.g orange turns red and mid blue goes deep blue!  Alarmingly the little column on the left of the preview page showing the collection shows the original file colours and then after a few seconds show the new distorted image...you can see this visible change and it takes place after a few seconds once you double click! Also if you use Apple's 'Cover Flow' to preview, this function will replace your original RAW file with the new 'altered preview' image!
I have raised this with Apple but they have yet to reply...has anyone ever experienced this? I have used my Mac book for 18months only noticed it about 5 days ago!
I went to Apple store and we tried it in other laptops and Macs and it happened to all of them so we think this is a software issue and not down to the laptop.

Your expectation is wrong. Every RAW converter will give you a different interpretation of the data. There is no single accepted way of interpreting RAW.
    >shouldn't that be so?
Not really. I think what makes RAW so interesting is that you are not tied to the camera maker's interpretation of the data. This gives one far more versatility to get to your desired result. Of course, if you prefer the camera maker's interpretation, youu can use their software to develop the RAW or you can use the beta profiles in ACR/Lightroom and get
close to identical rendering. I don't know if Adobe released any beta camera profiles for the D700 yet though.

    Hi, Again, John,
I followed the instructions to the letter, and nothing worked. I still got the wrong kind of file message. After I tried to use the plug-in, I could no longre open pages in IE or Firefox. I have to wipe my new computer and reinstall everything. This time, I made CS3 the first thing I installed, and followed the instruction again as follows:
    "Windows

    1. Exit Photoshop CS3 and Adobe Bridge.
    2. Open My Computer.
    3. Double-click Local Disk (C:).
    4. Navigate to Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Plug-Ins\CS3\File Formats.
    5. Move the existing Camera Raw.8bi plug-in to anot

desktop). Ensure you keep this version in case you need to revert back.
    6. Copy the Camera Raw plug-in, Camera Raw.8bi, fr
om the download into the same folder as Step 4.
    7. Launch Photoshop CS3 or Adobe Bridge."
Still unable to open RAW images in PS. I did notice that the two files I copied to the desktop folder were the same, although one was slightly larger than the other. I chose to keep both.
Why is CS3 working on my desktop from the same disk with no plu-in, but not on my new laptop? Is it Windows 8.1 instead of XP? That doesn't make much sense. PLEASE help. This is insane.

You most likely have the clipping indicator on that shows you blown out areas.  Click the little triangle in the upper right of the histogram to turn it on or off.

Having converting Nikon raw files (NEF) I found that MB25 in NEF became MB 51 in DNG.
Is it normal? Can I have more data than in the original?

Yes, it's normal. DNG is a more generalized intermediate format and may require to fill in info just for compatibility reasons like padding chroma sub-sampling and the like.

  • Help Cannot Read any of my NEF (Nikon RAW) with iPhoto '08

I recently upgraded to iPhoto '08 and also to an Intel-based iMac (24in 2.8Ghz).
But now I cannot import, view or manipulate any of my old NEF (Nikon RAW format) pictures. Strangely, I also cannot view them in my Aperture. Previously, using PowerPC Mac, I had no problems viewing both.
Is this a compatibility issue with the Intel-based Macs? Is it an issue with the latest version of iPhoto?
Is this something I can solve, or will I need to convert all my NEF files to JPEG using Nikon software? Which I'd really rather not do since I have a vast number of them.
    Thank you so much.

    Joseph
RAW support is a function of the OS rather than iPhoto or Aperture. I would download and re-apply the 10.4.10 update from http://www.apple.com/support/downloads.
Dont forget to repair permissions after.
