.nef.tif ?

I have a some pics that are .NEF. I recently noticed that some of the pics in my library have been renamed .nef.tif and the size is 180X120 instead of the 3300X2000 they used to be. Is there a way to batch change the names of all 400 pics to just .nef. When renamed they are normal ? I'm not sure what happened with them. It mjst of happened when i changed from Panther to Tiger. Anyone ?

No the only thing that i have done recently is upgrade from Panther to Tiger but all the other .nefs that i have did not change only this one batch. If i take them out of iPhoto and look at them they are name ***.nef.tif . In iPhoto they are named DSC003222. They are shown as tiff files with a size of 200X160 (roughly)
Is there away to batch rename them with the original .nef ?

  • Photoshop CS 5 12.0.4 stopped opening any images but JPEG's!

Running a MacBook Pro, 17in, 2.93 Dual Core Intel, 8 GB RAM, OS 10.6.8.  All programs and plugins are 64 bit compatable and have worked just fine for months and months.
I've been using PS 5 and LR 4.1 for a LONG time. I have several NIK plugins, non new.  As of today, Photoshop will NOT open RAW/NEF, TIF, DNG files directly or by sending the file to PS from LR 4.1.
The only update was a month ago when I upgraded ACR to 6.7.0 to read NEF's from my new Nikon D4. PS won't open files from older camera's either.
This JUST started happening today, June 9th!  Worked fine June 8th, not today.  The message is ALWAYS Photoshop Not Responding.
    HELP!!
    Alan

Curt, this morning Bridge would freeze and not send images to ACR, except JPG's.  I disabled the whole Plugin folder, then just the NIK plugin folder, the exact same results, Photoshop CS5 freezes!
I download Adobe DNG converter 6.5, converted some NEF's to dng's and they still won't open.
I download CS6 & Bridge, ACR 7.1 and it freezes when trying to open anything, including JPG's, so that's worse not better ;~(.  Did a complete "uninstall" of PS6. Removed the newest ACR 7.1 and Bridge, went back to original versions for PS 5.
For reasons only known to Adobe or Apple the darn software; LR 4.1 and PS 5 Extended are now working perfectly WITH the plugin's (I removed the "updates" from NIK) which were before the "update"!!
Again Curt, thanks for the advice and I honestly have NO CLUE why the software has choosen to work again... I think a reformat of my hard drive and install of Snow Leopard again is soon going to be necessary ;~(.  I hate doing that because trying to find all the serial # for software is tough, at least for me LOL.
I use DataBackup from Prosoft now but I'm thinking of doing a clean BU using TimeMachine. I need a BU that will retain application serial numbers, any idea on that one??  I've gone to my Adobe site and gotten the serials I need there, and I've got them from NIK, but I have a LOT more installed from download (no disc's).

  • Import Not Finding All Files in Folder Tree (which files were missed?)

    I'm a new LR4.1 user running on a 15" Macbook Pro (OS X 10.7.4).
I exported my Aperture Library masters: mostly NEF files from Nikon D100, D200, D300, D800 cameras, and also JPG, TIF, and PSD files, etc.
    Aperture reported this export count:
51285 of 50582 (don't ask me why it exported more than it thought it had!).
After export, I used "find" (case-insensitive) in the output directory tree to count all NEF, TIF[F], PSD, PNG, JPG, GIF, AVI, and MOV files spit out by Aperture: I found 51277 such files (pretty close to the Aperture export count, although not exactly the same).
However when I point Lightroom to that folder tree with the exported Aperture masters, an IMPORT operation only reports 44279 photos for import (at lower left of expanded import dialog). About 7,000 less than Aperture exported! I have "Include Subfolders" checked and "Don't Import Suspected Duplicates" unchecked in the LR import dialog. Also, I am using the "ADD" option in the import dialog.
How can I figure out which files Lightroom is missing? (I haven't actually imported anything yet due to the discrepancy.)
I can't see how the discrepancy could be so large. I think LR should support most of my Aperture-supported files.
I see LR doesn't support 32 bit files, but I don't see how I could have 7K files (maybe some, but I don't think 7k!) (I will check this later, am installing Xcode and ImageMagick to check the count of 32 bit deep files).
If anyone can offer ideas on how I can find the missed files, it would be appreciated.
(Maybe if I proceed with the import and there is some way to export a text file listing of library files, then I could process that file vs. the actual files in the directory tree to deduce the problem issues.)

    Colin

  • Aperture 1.1 will not import tiff file if name is the same as the raw file

Before Aperture I would open up a raw file in Photoshop, edit it and save it as a tiff or a psd file keeping the same name. When I import a folder of images saved like this the only files I see imported are the raw files and any tiff or psd file I renamed to something else. I tried looking under Images> New version from jpeg and it's grayed out with no option to see a tiff file.
I took a quick look and searched through the forum and found nothing. I can't be the only one doing this!

That's a ridiculous bug and the fact that you cannot see the entire filename (.nef, .tif, .psd) on the light table (except in tooltips) is pretty incredible too. It's like they were assuming there was no other previous workflow.
A workaround seems to be putting all the like named files in another folder before importing into Aperture. Time consuming if you have a few hundred projects and it could result in losing a few files here and there plus you need to manually add them to the proper stacks.
The concept of Aperture is still brilliant it just needs a lot more beta testing. It's kind of like Apple making Spotlight the default without giving you the option of using the clean straight forward old Find.

  • Aperture does not import all files in folder.

I have a folder with 3460 images.  They are a combination of NEF, TIF, and PSD and xmp files.
When it was finished importing it said it had imported the 3460 images; however, there are only 3278 images showing.
I tried starting a new library, and importing the same folder again.  Again, I got 3278 images.
If I use the Finder and go to the folder, it shows 3496 files; however, 36 of those are .xmp files.
Any idea how I can check to see which files are not importing?  Or what I can do to get these 182 files in Aperture?
    Many thanks for any help.

Could be just chasing a ghost, but at least we'll know we don't have to capture it.  Let's do two things to determine how many Images Aperture thinks are in the Library.
    1.)
Select the container "Photos" listed near the top of the Library Inspector.
Clear the filter.  (In Browser view, click the magnifying glass icon _inside_ the search field, and select "Show all" from the dropdown menu.)
Deselect all.  ("Edit ▹ Deselect All".)
Expand all Stacks.  ("Stacks ▹ Open all Stacks".)
What does Aperture report in the bottom border of the Browser?  Should be something like "1234 items displayed".
    2.)
    Close Aperture.
"{option}+{click}" the Aperture Dock icon.  (Hold {option} down until the dialog shows up.)
Select your Library from the list.
What does Aperture report below the list of Libraries (you may have only one Library in the list)?  Should be something like "1234 versions, 1234 originals".

  • CRW supported? JUST sort of. Depends on the camera

Apple's page about Aperture's specs in http://www.apple.com/aperture/specs.html broadly states support for the following RAW formats: "CRW, NEF, TIF, CR2, OLY, DNG"
Just so it is stated somewhere (which Apple should BTW), I will say it here. CRW is not a universal format. Canon tweaked CRW for each camera it released shooting RAW in that format and as of Mac OS X 10.4.3 and Aperture 1.0 not all them are supported
If someone wanted to use Aperture with a Canon PowerShot G2's CRW, you cannot. Canon PowerShot G2's CRW is not supported. Time for you to leave a note at http://www.apple.com/feedback/aperture.html
Surprisingly Apple's iPhoto but not Aperture's page (or so I think) points to a list of camera's the RAW files of which are supported (seemingly) by all Apple's apps, not just iPhoto:
    http://www.apple.com/macosx/upgrade/cameras.html
    PowerMac G5 Quad 2.5GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   2.5 GB RAM

There may be some hope for older camera support, like the G1. I have a G2, which is also not supported. But the G3 is. Turns out there is a system file that you can edit to "add support". It's described here :
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=262930
I tried this for the G2, and sure enough, it worked. I do not know how significantly different the RAW file format between the G1 and G2 is, but if they are not too different, you may find that changing the G2 to a G1 in this file may work for you. You may be able to get other Canon RAW file types to work by changing the G2 to the model number of the camera.
Note that while this 'hack' seems to work, I'm not convinced that it is the optimal RAW converter for the G2 (or G1). I find the conversions a bit on the dark side, but these can be compensated for through later adjustements.
Until Apple adds more formal support for these older cameras, you may want to give this a try.
Sure wish someone knew what all the numbers meant so we could tweak the parameters and improve the Raw conversions. But, they are not too bad for my G2.

  • Lightroom 4.3 import issues - hangs

Anybody got a clue why this behaves so badly??
Very consistent and very annoying bug....have about 20,000+ images on my laptop HD. Desire to use LR to catalog and organize, etc. On some folders import runs fine. On others it just hangs, with no error message, and does not 'crash' LR.....it just hangs and does nothing. I have waited for 30 minutes to see if it is just 'busy', but nothing. The progress bar also shows no progress, or stops half way and hangs. Upon searching the forums I see this is a consistent complaint about LR in general, but most of the other reported problems are with external media. My issue is with images spinning on the internal HD. I checked folders that 'hung' consistently and with my other program, ACDSee, it builds thumbnail pages and opens the images just fine. The metadata also appears normal (Nikon D80 and D7000 images mostly...NEF and JPG)
Win7 Pro, Lenovo laptop w/4GB memory. Help....or I'm getting my money back. This is ridiculous behavior for s/w this expensive, from a reputable company, for a simple function like opening an image and interrogating the metadata, etc....wasting my time, which is valuable.
    UPDATE:
Just tried importing from an SD card. This does not work either. Images from a D7000. Initially the import screen showed thumbnails, but after creating a new directory in the target folder, the thumbnails would not display, and import simply hangs with no error or crash. When I cancel the import I get a message that says "no photos or videos were found to import" (and...yes...they were all selected)

Looks like I found the problem....VIDEO files are what causes the hanging upon import. ANY 'supported' video file (AVI, MOV, MP4, etc.) cause the import to gack. To test this I built a temp directory with a mix of JPG, DCR, NEF, TIF image files and WMV, MOV, AVI, MP4 video files. The WMV it simply ignores since it is not supported. If any of the supported file types are 'seen' the import preview thumbnails will not draw, and the import will hang. If you simply change the file extension on a video, then re-initiate the import, it imports all images OK, and ignores the unknown file type (i.e. it does not open the files and interrogate them if the extension is not known - the smart thing to do). I also checked the CODEC used in several of the video files and it is supported, so I dont think it is a CODEC issue. You would think if LR saw a file it did not understand, it would simply ignore it (e.g. a supported file extension with an unsupported CODEC inside). In my professional opinion this is a serious bug and needs to be addressed. I also installed the latest version of QuickTime and tried the test folder with just a single MOV video and it still hung. This is really stupid behavior.....I'm quite surprised that Adobe's QA team did not find this bug (file type smarts are pretty basic stuff....), so there must be something quite unique to my Windows box which has LR tied up in knots....
The final test was to cleanse my image folder tree of all videos, then import the entire tree of about 7000 images (about 20GB) in several hundred different folders. It chugged through the import without a problem (took ~10 min). This whole mess only killed several days of my time. I'll send Adobe the bill for my time.....

  • Lightroom 4.3, Windows8 export file problem

I am running Lightroom 4.3 on a new Windows8 Lenovo PC (T430s).  After importing and developing the files, I use the export function to limit file size to 2 meg.  After the export is complete, I receive a error message on a screen that reads "some export operations were not performed" and I receive a list of "file could not be written."  Actually, all files are written, but they are not limited to 2 meg.  I run LR4.1 on a Windows7 pc at my home office, and I use the same settings on both machines.  Any suggestions?

I have the same problem LR 4.3 Win 8. Exporting files with LR of any file type NEF, TIF, or jpg to a jpg file. If I want to constrain the file size say to 1,000kb it will fail on a lot of the files. If I export say 10 files it will fail on about half of them "Some export operations were not performed". When viewing the target folder with windows explorer the failed files show up as and icon "PS" where the ones that made it will show the thumnail of the photo. If it try to view or delet these files it tells me that the file is being edited in LR. As soon as I close LR the files become available in windows explores but the files size was not constrained to the size I specified in the export function.  I am exporting to a different folder than the original files are in.  This problem started a couple weeks ago when I updated Win 7 to Win 8.  The original files can be any size, or image type.  It seem that it is always the same files that will fail if I retry doing the export.  If I do not check the "Limit file size to:" box so that the file size is not constrained then the export works just fine except that I end up with too large of a file.  I also use the image size function to size the image and that creates no problems. So it would seem that limiting the file size creates the problem. Is there a fix for this in LR or is the problem in Win 8?

  • Quality of .nef LR files Degrading after Edited in CS4 and saved as .tif?

After I edit a .nef picture in LR, I right click  and select "edit in CS4".  I do my edits in CS4 (usually cloning) and I choose to save the image in CS4, it automatically appears as a .tif in Lightroom with the same rating/color coding that I gave to the original .nef Lightroom file that I decided to edit in CS4.
But, in the .tif in LR, I lose some of the edits to the .nef picture that I did in Lightroom.  I am noticing the pictures are lighter and contrast and darks are lighter.  I feel like the quality is degraded too and looks weird.
Anyone else experience this and do you have any advice?  Thanks so much!

Problem solved I think.  The Photoshop update I have blowing off for a couple of weeks seems to have fixed it.  There was an update in the bundle I downloaded for camera raw 5.7(?) and I'm guessing that is what the problem was...  Fingers crossed this never happens again.  Thanks!!!

  • Tif files will not import with the same filenames as the .nef files

When I work on a .nef file, say x.nef, Lightroom 1.0 will allow me to export the x.nef as x.tif to the same folder as the x.nef file resides, but obviously I need to import the x.tif file into the folder for it to show up in LR When I try to import the x.tif file into LR it shows up the the file list OK. When select it and try to import it I get a message telling me that I can't import it as the file x.nef already exists. I didn't select x.nef but x.tif. It will allow me to import it into a different folder, but that is not what I want to do. i need the keep the relevant net and tif files with the same name in the same folder.
Adobe tech. support suggested; reinstalling, trashing the LR preferences folder, making new databases. None of these solved the problem. In LR beta 4 I could save import tif files with the same file name the .nef with no problem, but not in LR1.0.
Using Win XP Pro SP2. Pentium P4 3.0 with 2gig ram.
Has anyone else had this problem. Any assistance appreciated.

I agree (Adobe) that first the concept that michael.nef and michael.tif and michael.jpg are different files needs to be changed.
A duplicate is a file that has the same filename and extension and the same content measurements.
Under the above concept or any concept, ignore duplicates should bring in any file to LR with the same name (contents and measurements) and different extensions.
I do edit in NEF (more now if I use LR instead of PSE5), do save to PSD, and do save to L/F JPG. If I had to layer in PSD, then I use that for printing, otherwise LR. I always have to make large jpgs to upload to web printing sites, and even small jpgs (now we have the same name and extension (but the measurements would be different) to email. Yes, we do keep copies of an image. I can see where I might want to have the edited .NEF and the PSD in the lib to view, cuz they may have different edits on them.

  • LR hangs when after editing .tif image try to edit .NEF file

LR CC Trial hang ups after:
    Open LR CC
Edit .tif file created by PS CC trial
Go back to the grid of thumbnails
    Edit (try) a .NEF
I am working with a catalog ex LR 5.4
This is the four time in a row that happens this. Both photos are "normal" files (neither smart preview nor virtual copy).
As a side observation. The CC application starter shows "0 days remaining"!! Which is not possible because LR CC was released few days ago. However, in the LR screen shot above, it says "29 days left..."
I have tried disabling my antivirus software (ESET Smart Security v8) without success.
    Solved!
PS CC hang up and during restarting it told me it was because a Graphic Card error, and it has disabled it. I have disabled the Graphic Card, also in LR, and I am not having problems so far.

    Hi,
Next time you encounter similar problem, please check that that the space bar is not stuck. Also verify that hand tool is active even if any other tool is selected.
Space bar is a shortcut for Hand tool any time with any tool active.
    Hope this solves your problem.

  • TIF images scrambled and error when opening NEF file

    Hello,
Not sure what happened, but when I open .tif images in CS5 the display screambled.
When I open the NEF image adn hen press the Open Imge button in Camera Raw 6.6 dialog, sometimes I get the following error message and other times the image opens but it also scrambled like the image above.
Is this Camera Raw issue? I have 6.6 which is the latest.
The NEF and TIF images display correctly in Lightroom 3.5.
    Thanks

The issue was definatly with OpenGL. However, when I upgraded the driver the problem did not go away. Plus the there was no option to turn off OpenGL in the graphic card it self. What I did is, I opened Preferences -> Performance in Photoshop and unchecked Enable OpenGL Drawings box which located above the "Advance Settings" button. After that the images displayed correctly.

  • Unable to open any raw, tif, nef, raf files in preview or photoshop

    Hello everyone!
I am able to open jpgs but not tifs, raw or any other files such as nefs or rafs in preview or photoshop 7. They seem to open in preview and for a split second I can see a thumbnail of them but then it says "preview couldn't open this file. Maybe it is corrupt or in a format it doesn't recognise" (or something like that). Is there anything I can do? Can I download any software to fix it? I know there have been a lot of posts like this but I don't really understand what the replies are saying. I'm not a technical whizz like everyone else on here!
    Many thanks

    Welcome to the forums Squidge87!
Many of these APPs use/require OS components to open these, but try Graphic Converter & see what we find, at least for TIFFs...

If I remember correctly, LR writes this data into those data into the files if you press Strg + S or if you configure LR to write allways into the xmp files. If this does not work for you, perhaps http://www.sno.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/ or http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/thankyou.jsp?ftpID=4529&fileID=4219 can provide more options to you.
Having Lr do it for me wouldn't work, but calling exiftool and harvesting the return stuff from stdout may be better than what I'm doing now - thanks.

Call me conservative, but I'm really not a fan of writing in these files. It might work with and SDK, but I think there is no public SDK for it.
In addition I think it is not possible to translate LRs Development-Settings into NX Settings and NX Settings into LR. By updateing the preview you just have a preview with wrong parameters. Sounds week to me. But I would be glad if you can convince that I am wrong.
Most people think I'm crazy. There is no support in the Nikon-SDK for it, but all I need to update is the main rgb image - nothing else.

  • Organizer will not import TIF copy of NEF file

When I copy a NEF file to a TIF file, it says the file already exists when I try to import to the Organizer.

I suppose you did use the ACR plugin in PSE to convert the NEF into a TIFF format file : open in ACR, edit, and save as 'tif' from PSE ? In the Save As dialog, was the checkbox 'Include in the organizer' checked ?
If the file is already in the organizer, you should find it easily with the menu Find/by filename.
