Negative eMac Display

Our school has four eMacs. One of them, a 1GHz, 10.3.9 Panther, 256 MB RAM, and out of warranty, has started to have a display problem. The display is showing negative colours, like white shows as black, blue shows as orange etc. This only affects our Student account, the Teacher account and Administrator accounts are just fine. Can anyone help me? I would hate to have to tell someone to take the entire machine to the Yorkdale Store to get it fixed, as it is a long drive away. Thank you for responding to this issue.

I just had this exact thing happen to my eMac last night. Im at work, so I'll post a follow up later when I get home. This started right after I started remotely controlling the Mac via Chicken-of-the-VNC in full screen mode from my powerbook (the eMac is in the basement). I bet anything that the key combo to toggle in/out of VNC fullscreen also sets some of the options mentioned to change the display.
Thanks for the info, I'll post a follow up.

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Sorry, but no: the eMac's miniVGA port is output-only (to support mirroring to an external display using the miniVGA adapter).

  • Negative sign display for CURR field in ALV grid report

I have a field BETRG defined as CURR field of length 15, decimal places 2. The value may be negative or positive. In case of negative values I am using EDIT_MSK option in the field catalog to bring the negative sign to the left of the value as shown below.

On displaying the report using 'REUSE_ALV_GRID_DISPLAY' as shown above, when the value of BETRG is a smaller number like say 624, then the ALV output appears as '-            624.00' instead of '-624.00'.
Is there any way that I can remove the space in between the negative sign and the number before displaying the ALV output using 'REUSE_ALV_GRID_DISPLAY'?

    Hi Deepak,
I tried this and found that this doesn't work in case of currency field. Once you move back the char field (with negative sign to the left and condensed)  to the currency field, the negative sign again moves back to the right.
I think that the only way a negative sign can be brought to the left of the currenct field is by using edit_mask of field catalog as I have shown above.

    Shayeree.

  • Cure for a blank eMac display?

I have been mirroring my eMac on another display screen for over a year but now I will need that monitor for my new Mac mini. I'd like to keep my eMac for use in another room. The computer part runs just fine.
When the screen died it acted odd for a few weeks (shrinking, shuttering, blinking with a quick on/off) and then just went black. Once in a very great while it will suddenly pop to life, run for a few hours and then snap to black again. When it does come to life the resolution and colors are grand.
Do you all think there may a home fix for the display? A job for a pro? Forget a fix and buy a new monitor to mirror to?
    Thanks

The specific video problem that the good hobo is recalling for the first eMacs was a faulty IVAD cable. It included a shrinking and/or distorted image, a "banding" across part of the screen, and was often appompanied by a sound show of pops and sizzles. There was a repair extension program that fixed the problem without cost to the buyer, but it's long since expired.
However, most of those eMac 700s suffering video problems showed symptoms within months of purchase. By the time we bought ours (Aug 2002), the problem was gone, so I'm not sure that our diagnosing a known defect that waited so long to appear is a complete picture of your issue.
Does the external monitor still work if you put it back on the eMac?
If you live in the Western US, there is a shop in Oregon that does good things for eMacs. The image of the cable I linked is from their web site. However, if you've not close enough to drive the computer, the cost of shipping a 50-pound eMac to them can be more than a used, working eMac costs.

  • EMac Display "red only"

I recognized, that the eMacs colour settings changed to a warmer tone, which could not be corrected using monitor settings control panel.
Suddenly the Display colour changed to red. No other colours but the scale from red to black. The device is 14 months old!
Changing the CRT is more than 500.-€ in Germany, which exceeds the limit for low-end hardware reparatures in my feeling.
But, maybe it isn't the tube? Can the video logic controller produce such phenomena?
Hope, that someone has an idea
    Greetings

    Hello Karl,
Try Resetting the PRAM. While I doubt this will help, it is worth a shot.
It really sounds like the Video Logic board is shot. This isn't going to be cheap to replace either. Take it in to a service center and see what they say. If it is the board, it will cost you less to buy a new computer.
    Good luck,

  • EMac display problems connected to FCP problems?

I've posted this problem on the boards before, but figured its about time to give it another go. I've an eMac running OS X.3.3 and FCP 4.5 (along with the rest of the Production Suite package minus motion). Over the summer, I had brought the computer to my collegue's work studio. There we have a G5 (1.8 GHz) and a G4 desktop (dunno the specs). I had transfered a project from my eMac to the G4 and finished it there. While working on it, the still pictures apparently all went offline but when clicked, they showed up in the viewer just fine.
I finished the project on the G4 in the studio and moved it back (via ethernet network) to the eMac. When I did this, the problem came with it. In addition, whenever I put text on a project in FCP, it would be green and partly transparent.
Then I noticed certain buttons in FCP were not readable on a few pop-up menus (The 'set scratch disks' menu in particular). There are a black pixelated rectangle with the button-ends instead. Also, when I run Toast Titanium (for burning TS folders from DVD Studio Pro) there are several lines across the program window that appear static-y.
In a hopefully unrelated problem, the eMac (Now back at my house) gets stuck while 'allocating disk space' during capture now. I'm trying to capture to one of my 2 external drives. The one in question is a lacie 250 gig that has a fantom 250 gig daisychained through it into one of the two firewire ports on the computer.
PUH-LEESE give some advice if you have any. I've resorted to the version of Premiere Pro on the PC, which is ok, but not up to par with FCP.

First of all, your last question - when you trash prefs it removes the limit on Capture now. That tells FCP to allocate every last bit of disk space when doing a capture now, thus the beach ball when capturing Now to external drives. Go into your prefs and limit Capture Now. Also, if you are running Norton or Virex, don't. They will also cause the beachball during capture. You can read all about it in Shane's stock answers at the top of the forum.
Second - your display issues - do you have the colors set to Millions? As to the apparently "offline" media, that's just your thumbnail cache. You can delete that and it will be rebuilt.

  • Emac display is purple

To make a long story short my emac qualified for the recall with the logic board. It was replaced, when I got it home the computer would not turn on. I took it back they replaced it again, when I got it home it would not turn on.....took it back again they punched some things on the keyboard and it turned on. This was about 1 month ago now my screen is purple and won't go away. I am loosing my mind now. I run a small buisness off this computer and can't afford to not have it AGAIN for a week. HELP HELP HELP

I would bet you have another bad display.
I went through 4 emacs, 8 video boards and 3 logic boards as a result to my display issues. I asked apple if anyone else had been experiencing these problems and they all said no, not at all. Well now they have a series of serial numbers that are bad and my emac falls into it.
My problems were screens going dark, a extremely blurry screen, unbearable high pitch squeels, a Cyan and Magenta screen, and now I have another problem that will be looked at today, (bright pinpoint of light when I put machine to sleep).
My advice, if you have the extended warranty which I thankfully bought, is to call Apple and talk to tech support. Tell them your story and your situation what they may offer is to ship you a replacement emac upon receipt of your bad one or, if you have the warranty, send someone down to fix it. If they send someone in that takes about 2 days if you live in a large city or near one. If you get the new machine that takes about 4 days. They ship the new one out to you immediately upon receipt of your older one.

  • EMac Display issue

This is a brand new eMac that has been working for 1 week, now the screen shakes and then goes back to normal, it is not one of the models in the eMac extended coverage program or what ever the name is I have already checked this. I am just wondering if it is motherboard or the display. It does this in every mode no matter what I do.

When does the screen shake? If after starting up or waking from system sleep, that's the built-in degaussing and is normal. Otherwise, can you tie the shaking down to any particular actions? If the bottom of the screen shakes when the hard drive is in heavy use, the metal cage that's supposed to shield the CRT may be loose. If the shaking can be associated with sound playing at moderate to high volume through the internal speakers, try switching to a set of shielded external spreakers (you can get external speakers for anywhere from US$10 to 200+ depending on how much quality you want to buy).
Try temporarily moving the eMac to a different location. If the shaking stops, look around the original location for anything that could be a source of EMI --- refrigerators, a furnace on the other side of a common wall, microwave oven, even a UPS placed on the desktop rather than on the floor.

  • EMac Display Repair Extension Program

If you have not done it, you should send in your eMac (if eligible) for the display program. I am not sure if the program expired yet.

I just took my emac in regarding this issue...the genius told me that is was past the three year extension but he said he would cover it anyway...I guess I got lucky. Maybe more will have a kind hearted tech too!

  • EMac display whine

Since upgrading my eMac to OS X Tiger, I have found that the display whines (high-pitched) for about 10 seconds upon waking up from sleep. It's loud enough to be annoying but good thing it only lasts a few seconds. Does anyone have any ideas? or similar experiences? Thank you.

that is really strange that that would happen after an upgrade. you could try any number of things to narrow things down. first i would try pulling the /library/preferences/systemconfiguration/com.apple.powermanagement.plist to the trash and restarting the computer. if that doesn't help, then try booting to the tiger install disk and running disk repair. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214 if that doesn't help, try doing a pmu reset. instructions are in step 6 of this article. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=34885 if your emac is ati graphics or later the reset button is on the other side. (the right). let me know if you make any progress and good luck. [ 8 ) ]

  • Emac display lines and restart

My display has short lines that are negative and positive. and jump around like electrical interference(maybe not that intense ). When I tried a restart, to see if it would help with the quality of display, my start up disk failed and got me to the blue screen starting to load OS 10, and then only blue screen. I zapped the PRAM. Then I could use my restore and install disk. I reinstalled both Tiger and Panther. Everything works until trying to restart. I still have distortion in the display. My serial number is G84313.... is this significant? Any ideas?

Hi. I don't think that it is possible to fix the lines on your screen. I'm thinking that maybe you had placed a magnet near the CRT display which causes the colors to get distorted and also the picture loses clarity and detail. When this happened to me I restarted the system right after it happened and it was normal.

  • Negative Sign displaying as '/' in alv

    HI,
I am using ALV Display, the field has a negative value in internal table but while displaying the negative sign is converted to '/' sign.
Can you plz tell me how to correct the same?
    Regards,

    Dear Ashu Arora,
Method SET_SIGN ofClass CL_SALV_COLUMN is used to set the sign. Method HAS_SIGN is used to check if it is displayed in the output.
    Hope this will help.

  • EMac Display Pulsates and Shuts Down Mac

Hello, When we start up this eMac after being turned off for a long time, we get through the password screen and the programs load, but while doing this the display starts getting smaller and kinda pulsates. This gets worse as the screen gradually gets smaller and then Shuts Down completely.
We can wait a few minutes, unplug the eMac, plug it back in, start it up, but we don't even get to the Desktop before it turns itself off.
I'm a technician but only for less than two years and I've never seen this before. I'm thinking there is a hardware problem, most likely with the display adapter and the computer is shutting down before any serious damage to the logic board. Or is that the case, the logic board is toast?
    Please help!
    Thanks!
    PhilW

I'm not aware of any software, IVAD cable, or PRAM battery symptoms matching what you describe, nor does it match the leaking capacitor issue symptoms. It does sound consistient with a bad solder joint somewhere, possiblly in the power supply to the analog/CRT assembly, in that it starts OK while cold but goes bad as the computer warms up during startup. Troubleshooting such problems requires teardown of the computer and repair of an indiviadual solder joint is difficult at best even if the individual joint(s) can be identified; realistically, at best you'd be able to narrow it down to the logic board, analog/CRT assembly, or power supply, and replace that. Replacing any but the power supply would likely cost more than the computer is now worth. When the computer shuts down, is the entire computer shutting down (including fan, keyboard optical tray eject button, and power LED) or just the display? If the computer entirely shuts down, that would actually be encouraging as it would suggest looking at the power supply first, and replacement of that could be cost-effective.
How old is the computer? Was the extended three-year AppleCare warrenty purchased for it? You could contact an Apple Authorized Service Provider and ask about their fee for diagnostic testing and/or replacing the power supply.

  • Seeking a filter for an eMac display

Hello. I'm looking for an anti-radiation, anti-glare filter for the display/monitor of an eMac computer. Would anyone be able to suggest products and vendors? No store in my town seems to sell filters for CRT displays any more. Thanks.

The problem is really that you have introduced those resonances. What if the resonance happens to be at the same frequency as your desired signal? Then the resonance may get so large as to destroy the accelerometer! If the frequencies are close but not exactly the same, it becomes difficult to design a fliter which can adequately separate the signals without too much error on the desired signal.
The best solution is to modify the metal surface or the attachment method so that the resonance does not occur or else occurs at a frequency far removed form the desired signal frequency.
If that is not a possibility, consider adding a second accelerometer mounted in such a manner that it does not respond to the resonances but does respond to the frequency of the desired signal. Even if the second accelerometer does not accurately measure the amplitude of the acceleration due to its position, it may permit determination of the signal frequency.
Remember, the device you are measuring is likely also experiencing accelerations due to the resonances, so you may need to measure them.

  • EMac display has green & red blobs on left of screen and is pinched.

    Hi!
I was using my eMac (as you do) when all of a sudden there was a loud POP! and the whole machine shut off in an instant. I thought it was a gonner, but to my surprise it powered back up but with large green and red (magenta) blobs on the left 1/3 of the screen, and also that side of the screen was slightly vertically pinched; the right hand side of the screen looks perfect and I used the machine to back up my data, all seemed fine and dandy (except for the display).
Is it something simple? I assume the pop indicates that a component in the display circuitry has given up the ghost, but which one?

I've now sold the eMac as a cheap working machine, the new owner knew about the fault before handing over the cash so I wish them luck with it!
