Negative number of new mail

Hii all,
I am having a problem with AOL mail. I don't know if its related to upgrading to 1.01 but it just appeared after upgrading yesterday. If I have read all the messages in my inbox the mail counter on the home screen indicates -1. When I'm in the inbox the counter at the top of the page was indicating a very large number I couldn't see but that seems to have fixed itself.
I have done a phone reset several times and deleted the mail account and re-entered it with no success.
Thanks for any help!
John

How do you know you have new messages on the phone if it isn't marked on the home screen?
In all seriousness, my gut instinct would say that you don't have any new messages, but when you open the mail app it downloads the new message headers. Is it doing this even when you see new messages and then exit, or only initially? That is, if you see new messages, but don't actually read them, and then exit to the home screen, does the icon still say 0 messages?
The other option is indeed a problem with the mail app, for which I can only suggest the ever-exciting wipe 'n restore.

  • Wrong number of new mails in dock icon

    I have created a number of (local) folders and rules that move the appropriate mail to those folders. However the dock icon counts only the number of new mails in the IN-box and not the ones in those folders. Should I have done something else?

    In Mail's General preferences, you can set the "Dock unread count" popup menu to "All Mailboxes" instead of "Inbox Only".
    If you need an even more specific way to determine the quantity, you can create a new smart mailbox in which you define how you want the count generated. You can then set the popup menu to this smart mailbox instead of the "All Mailboxes" or "Inbox Only" choices.
    Hope this helps....

  • Notify about number of new mails Nokia X

    One thing I spotted, I can place mail shortcut on main screen but it does not notifiy me about newly arrived mails. This should be changed, because now I always have to open the mail account to check for mails.

    We all know that Android is different from Symbian.
    And yes, the same feature is available on Android but Nokia X has a different Launcher.
    I am just stating the fact that this feature is currently not available and nothing else.

  • Mail sees the number of .Mac mail messages, but not anything else about 'em

    Pretty straight forward problem.
    Mail says I have .Mac mail on all of my .Mac accounts yet when I click on them in Mail they cannot be seen in the list.
    ALL SOFTWARE IS UP TO DATE/LATEST AVAILABLE.
    Do ports have to be opened up for Mail to work? If so, how do people like me with five computers in their house each use Mail?
    In the left pane under the INBOX, I see all of my accounts.
    For one/my/main .Mac account, I hear the chime of NEW MAIL and see the red circle/dot with the number of new mails.
    When I click on the .Mac account, the right/upper pane shows nothing - it is blank.
    All of my other myriad of pop/imap accounts defined in the mail.app work perfectly well.
    .Mac mail accounts.
    email accounts from .Mac.
    Family pack gives a person five accounts. I mentioned that so that it the fact it happens with all the subaccounts and all my computers would eliminate any individual account and any individual computer from being significantly different than any other typical setup and thus eliminate them from being the focus on any suggested fix.

    I'd suggest creating a new test user account from the system preferences. Log in, open Mail, enter your .Mac settings and see how it goes.
    Alternatively, you can try to reset Mail.app by renaming (for backup purposes) the following files: (This will affect your other mailboxes as well!)
    Preferences: your_name/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist
    & Mail folder: your_name/Library/Mail/
    Assuming a new Mail setup actually works, post back in case you need help on importing your old POP3 messages.
    If not, I've no idea what to do... Your firewall should not affect .Mac behavior. (I got to admit, I don't particularly like Mail.app's buggy IMAP implementation.)
    Good luck!

  • Mail Dock icon "new mail" count wrong

    The Mail icon in my dock shows 11 new mails. I open Mail and there is no new mail. The icon then shows none, then a bit later it shows 11 again. If I get a real new mail it will show 12 new mails. The actual number of new mail adds to the phantom 11.

  • New Mail

    Can anyone explain why I get incorrect information when I go into mail? I have a number of filters set up which place my mail into various folders. When I go into mail bold type tells me that I have a number of new mails in a given folder, but when I click on the folder in question there is no new mail, or I apparently have no new mail in a given folder but when I do click ... there are 3 new messages. Do I have to click on all my folders every time? I have missed a number of messages sent to me because of this. My computer is closed down most nights and surely should be able to tell me if I have new mail or not.

    You need to create a new account with the appropriate server info for that provider. If the old account is no longer valid & you can't use it for sending or receiving email, you may want to delete the account. However, be aware that doing so will delete its inbox, drafts, saved, trash, & junk mailboxes, along with any messages in them, so move any of them that you want to save to local "On My Mac" mailboxes before deleting the account.
    You use the + & - boxes at the bottom of the account list in Preferences > Accounts to add & delete accounts.

  • No sound on new mail

    I have done some research and found this (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10762187&#10762187) but alas, my problem is different.
    Ok, this is what I see...
    * in Mail, I open Preferences > General and have "Ping" set for "New mail sound". (it's slightly louder than the default sound, but it doesn't matter which sound I use, it doesn't work
    * "Dock unread count" = "Inbox Only" (see below)
    I am using an IMAP account to a server I run locally. There are folders that appear under Inbox and at the present time non of them have any badges indicating new mail. Under the account (further down) where there are top level mail boxes there are several folders with badges indicating the unread count....
    All looks good so far, then this is where the problem lies...
    When I receive new mail, the badge on the mail application in the dock comes up, but no sound comes up. That badge relates directly to the inbox and new mail. But INSIDE the mail application, no matter what I do, I can not get an unread mail badge on the inbox itself. I can have any number of new mail in the inbox root, and I can see them unread (bolded) on the right side of the screen, but there is no unread count on the inbox itself (and for whatever reason this is where I think the sound alert is linked to. Because this badge is not showing up, I not get sound. It's just a hunch, but I think I'm on the game
    BTW before anyone asks, yes, my sound is turned on and not muted.
    What am I missing???

    I have found a work around, but it doesn't always work.
    My processes thus far: I opened up Mail on a Snow Leopard and IMAP'd into the same mail account and the badge was located on the inbox. Sure enough, it sounds everytime new mail is received.
    The ONLY way I can get the badge to appear on the main inbox, is to have mail monitor SEVERAL mail accounts. When I added a second IMAP account, the inbox suddenly had an unread count badge. Thinking my problem was solved, I deleted the second account and along with it, the badge also disappeared. I re-entered the account and it's back.
    As I said, it still doesn't always sound for new mail, but it does sound MORE often. I'm not going to mark this as resolved, since I feel this is still a problem

  • Script that shows new mails from Google Apps account in conky

    Hello guys,
    I'm looking for a script that outputs the number of new mails I received from my Mail Account with Google Apps.
    I've already found a script that works pretty well with the normal Gmail but not obviously not with Google Apps.
    import os
    import string
    #Enter your username and password below within double quotes
    # eg. username="username" and password="password"
    username="username"
    password="********"
    com="wget -O - https://"+username+":"+password+"@mail.google.com/mail/feed/atom --no-check-certificate"
    temp=os.popen(com)
    msg=temp.read()
    index=string.find(msg,"<fullcount>")
    index2=string.find(msg,"</fullcount>")
    fc=int(msg[index+11:index2])
    if fc==0:
    print "0 new"
    else:
    print str(fc)+" new"
    My idea was to replace mail.google.com/mail/feed/atom with mail.google.com/a/domain.tld/feed/atom but I always get connection errors like this.
    Connection to mail.google.com|209.85.135.16|:443... connected.
    HTTP request sent, wait for answer... 401 Unauthorized
    Connection to mail.google.com|209.85.135.16|:443... connected.

    Authorisation failed.

    Any suggestion what I could try?
    Thank you in advance.

    Here is part of a script that I am using with my Google Apps domain. Should be easy to follow. Just edit the three variables at the top of the script. I prompt for the password at boot so it is not hard coded in the script. I use x11-ssh-askpass for this.
    MAIL_URL = ['https://', 'mail.google.com', '/a/domain.com/feed/atom']
    USERNAME = "[email protected]"
    PASSWD = "password"
    def initMail():
    passman = urllib2.HTTPPasswordMgrWithDefaultRealm()
    passman.add_password(None, MAIL_URL[1], USERNAME, PASSWD)
    authhandler = urllib2.HTTPBasicAuthHandler(passman)
    opener = urllib2.build_opener(authhandler)
    urllib2.install_opener(opener)
    def checkMail():
    logging.debug("checkMail()")
    try:
    f = urllib2.urlopen("".join(MAIL_URL))
    doc = xml.dom.minidom.parseString(f.read())
    c = doc.getElementsByTagName("fullcount")[0].firstChild.data
    return dzenH1("Mail: ") + c
    except urllib2.URLError as e:
    return dzenH1("Mail: ") + "URLError"

  • Disabling badge count of new mail?

    Sorry if this is a dumb question, but is there a way to disable the new mail badge count for a particular account? I have two set up, and only one I want to see the number of new mail.
    Thanks.

    since updating to 2.0.2 on my 3g iphone i've noticed my new mail count is off also...it seems that for every new email i receive with Gmail using IMAP on the iphone, it shows a count of 3...2 new emails shows a number of 6, 3 emails shows 9 etc etc.
    anyone else have this prob and maybe have an idea as to how to fix it??

  • Strange number next to Mail Inbox

    I cannot seem to remove the number 4294967290 that has started appearing as a label next to my mail Inbox.  I am using Other mail (Eudora) and POP.  I have deleted/re-installed the account several times, re-booted several times but the label keeps re-appearing.  Seems to have started when a friend sent me several very large photo files.  My iPod froze while trying to download but eventually, after a re-boot, all the photos downloaded.  Not sure if this had anything to with this.
    My mail works fine just annoying to see this label.  Am curious what this means and if I should do anything about it.
    I also have an iPad using same mail account and the Inbox does not have such a number label.
    Any suggestions/help is appreciated.

    I should add that this is an iPod Touch.
    I also now notice that the number appears to indcate incoming mails.. That is to say that when new mail arrives the number increases by the number of new mails.  It then reverts back after I open the new mails.

  • Mail don't notified me even there's new mail.

    I don't know why Mail don't notified me even there's new mail in my inbox. For example, normally, when there's a new mail in my inbox, in the home screen on the mail icon, there's a red spot on the top right corner that indicates the number of new mail that I own. But in this case, this is not happened.

    Go To *Settings>Mail, Contacts, Calendar>*. Make sure that *Fetch New Data* is set to Push. Make sure Push is set to On and then set the interval to check the emails.

  • New mail icon

    starting today, the mail icon in my doc has a red circle with the number 1. I do not have any new unread mail. I have check in my inbox, sent mail, trash, and junk mailboxes. I can't seem to get rid of the red circle. Any ideas?

    I had the same problem, except that Mail was constantly adding 9 to the number of new mail count. Neither reindexing nor rebuilding the mailboxes solved the problem. Finally, I went into Mail preferences, and on the general tab, I set the new mail indicator option to "inbox only" and it's working fine now. Hope this helps.

  • IPhone Mail App showing "negative" number

    Hey guys, for some reason my mail app on my iphone is showing a "negative 1" even though there is no mail. I deleted the account, re-entered all the information and it is still there. Also, when a new mail arrives it goes back to 0 (or no notification), once I delete that it goes back to -1. What's wrong? I have no clue what to do! Any help would be appreciated! Thanks

    Same problem here.
    I have three accounts on my iPhone. 1 GMail, 1 IMAP and 1 MS Exchange. After I disabled the GMail account the IMAP account showed a negative new-emails badge. ( image: http://img19.imageshack.us/img19/3136/img0001boy.png )
    I tried deleting the account and recreating it on the iPhone, but it didn't help. Also tried to re-enable the GMail account, also didn't help.
    After I disabled the GMail account I watched some TED seminars using the TED application, which during one of these video's completely locked up the iPhone. I force-shut down the iPhone, started it back up again (took longer than normal). After the reboot the iPhone was showing erratic behavior (contacts would quit when pushing certain buttons, etc).
    A few reboots later the erratic behaviour was gone, but I instead was left with the -2 email badge.
    Hopefully this elaborate description of the events that took place will help someone locate the problem.

  • How to view and change SMTP port number in new account setup in "Mail" 10.6

    When I try to set up and test a new email account addressing an SMTP server that seems to e using a nn-standard port number, how on earth can I even look at the port number assigned by default to a new account in Apple Mail 10.6 setup ?
    I might have to trial and error different port numbers but when Mail tries to test the connection to the SMTP server after I enter its address, it just spins and hangs up. I suspect the reason is a wrong port number. How do I change that outgoing port number in Apple Mail ??
    There seems to be no obvious way the program will let U do it or even let you view the port it assigns in apparent error.

    there is no way to change the smtp port during the original account creation. you can usually wait Mail out if it's spinning its wheels at this point. I've had to wait about 15-20 minutes a few times. eventually Mail lets you through even if it fails to connect to the smtp server. then, once the account is created you can edit the smtp server and try a few different ports and settings. that's done in system preferences->accounts. click on teh smtp server at the bottom and select 'edit smtp server list". then in the popup click "advanced".

  • On my iPad home screen, the mail app used to indicate the number of new emails I had with a number in a red circle.  This has vanished since I upgraded.  Does anyone know why, and how to restore this?

    On my IPad 2 home screen, the mail app used to indicate the number of new messages with a number in a red circle, next to the app.  This has vanished, I think about the same time as when I upgraded to the new OS.  Does anyone know why and how to restore this feature?

    Thanks.  While you were replying to my question, I went into notifications and figured
    it out.  Appreciate the quick response!
