Negative Ping Times?

I'm hoping someone here has heard of this before... my internet is acting up and after some investigating I discovered that when pinging any address, INCLUDING THE LOCAL LOOPBACK, I get NEGATIVE ping times!!  I have never even heard of this before, and I switched NICs and the problem remains.  I reset the stack and it remains.  Any other ideas?

  • Very Very long ping time, only on arch, and preload doesn't work

Arch is the most amazing Linux system I have ever used. I get like a 30 second boot time from start to finish, i'm just wowed.
I am using arch64, and have only 2 problems!
    1. I have like a 32ms ping, for any site, toooo big. I have a 3com NIC card which Is currently being used as eth1, and an nvidia network controller on my board eth0. The nvidia controller doesn't work right, so i am using the 3com, with a huge ping time
    2. preload isn't working. I have 3gb of RAM, and AMAZINGLY only 400mb of RAM is being used, with 9 tabs in firefox open, compiz-fusion, gnome desktop. DAMN! I want more RAM being used, what is wrong with this?? (the problem is that things start up a little slow, so it must mean it is not staying in the RAM)
Please tell me what I can do to fix these problems!
EDIT: Could it have something to do with the groups I am in, or the preload.conf settings, or the rc.conf file?

I saw your latency thingy... though that aint so bad
    PING fk-in-f147.google.com (209.85.129.147) 56(84) bytes of data.
    64 bytes from fk-in-f147.google.com (209.85.129.147): icmp_seq=1 ttl=242 time=146 ms
Pinging from norway to... wherever that node is.
and compare that to a norwegian host
    PING www.sau.no (194.63.248.23) 56(84) bytes of data.
    64 bytes from web.domeneshop.no (194.63.248.23): icmp_seq=1 ttl=47 time=86.6 ms
all in all, you should not be so annoyed unless your used to sub 10 ms ofc.. but this is still very quick for a webhost, atleast i think so.

  • Ping time out, server connection is lost in visual administrator after java

    Dear all,
Recently I have done system copy for XI system. I have imported the java import after importing  the abap stack into the target system as java add in abap. The import phase finished successfully and java engine is also working well.
I have confirmed this by moving to the browser page  " http://hostname:50000/ and XI system  http://hostname:50000/rep ". Everything is working fine and in MMC console as well.
But while trying to log in to visual administrator i am getting the error message as " ping time out, connection to server is lost "

  • WAG325N (Ping time ~7k ms and connection dies)

    Hello,
I got a new problem now or maybe I could call it a old problem becouse I had it with my old WAG325N I hope I can get help to fix this or I trow this ISR in the dustbin.
Now after some use I got the same problem as I had on my old WAG325N (1.00.06) ISR, I did return that one and did get this new one.
The problem is that after ~15 hour of use the WLAN get unstable and disconnect me and the ping time to the router get extreme hight avg. ~7000 ms (~7% lost) and the internet connection goes down but then I view the status page on the router(after waiting 2 min for it to load) it's say that the ADSL connection is good.
The problem gets solved by rebooting(sometimes system restore is needed) the router and then it works fine for another ~15 hour and this problem comes again..

    Old problem: (fixed)
Hello, I just got my new WAG325N after my first one didn't work and now I wanted to upgrade it to 1.00.08 but then I try to it's false. I "upload" the file and the loadbar starts and it's goes to 3-4% and then the screen just turn white. The other things I would like to have help with is: Can I give one of my computers a fixed IP and have the rest computers have DHCP? And how do I do it? What do the firewall do? Which ports does it block/not block is it "stealth" can I set "advance" firewall rules so I can decide witch ports that should be open closed? Thanks for helping a newb. ^^ Oh btw. --- System Information --- Vendor: Linksys ModelName: WAG325N Firmware Version: A1.00.06, 2006-12-04 Boot Version: 1.0.37-5.4 Hardware Version: 0.01 Message Edited by vega_2007 on 10-20-2007 06:11 AM

  • Ping Time is higher since last weekend?

Hi there, I love BT Broadband. The service is excellent, the router is excellent and the speed is excellent. But last weekend I have noticed my connection has gotten worse, not speed wise but Ping wise. Here you can see my router stats:
    ADSL Line Status
    Connection information
    Line state:
    Connected
    Connection time:
    3 days, 22:03:47
    Downstream:
    8,128 Kbps
    Upstream:
    448 Kbps
      ADSL settings
    VPI/VCI:
    0/38
    Type:
    PPPoA
    Modulation:
    G.992.1 Annex A
    Latency type:
    Fast
    Noise margin (Down/Up):
    10.3 dB / 21.0 dB
    Line attenuation (Down/Up):
    22.5 dB / 11.5 dB
    Output power (Down/Up):
    19.9 dBm / 11.9 dBm
    FEC Events (Down/Up):
    0 / 0
    CRC Events (Down/Up):
    449 / 29
Now I used to have a 24ms 0 Jitter Constantly, and now since last weekend I have now 37ms 2 Jitter and its anoying me as I am a gamer.
    Before:
    http://www.pingtest.net/result/54428607.png
    Now:
    http://www.pingtest.net/result/55869184.png
BT has changed my connection to the "Fast" Latency Type and I have been on it for 4 months with that ping time (24ms), Although when I first got BT, I was told to wait 10 days for the line to settle, the standard set up. But I coudlnt resist changing my interleaved to Fast as it was 45ms, so I didnt care about the 10 day thing and on the third day, I sent a request to BT to change it. And now I am just wondering if theres anyway I can get BT to RESET MY ENTIRE CONNECTION?

  • EA3500 High Internet ping times

I have a EA3500 that I am having problems with.  Here is what I know
From my laptop, if I ping 192.168.1.1 I have ping times of 1ms.  If I ping 8.8.8.8 I usually get ping times in the 2000-3000ms range.  Now, If I reboot the router, my internet ping times go to 35-40ms for a little while (1 time it took about 30 seconds to ramp back up to the 2000 range, and another time it took about 5 minutes).
Now, If I connect my laptop directly to the internet my ping time stay at 30-35ms constantly.  I ran a test for 1 hr and it never changed.
I have updated my firmware and did a complete reset of the router.  Is there anything else I should try or should I claim this router and expensive paper weight?
    Thanks in advance

I recommend loading the classic firmware and not enabling cloud connect with this router. This way you have consistent dependable operation.

If you have a PPPoe connection and the router did this from date of purchase then see if the below link solves it.

  • Long ping times, slowish speed

    Hoping can get help here
I am fairly close to the exchange ~800m
Used to be with BE Broadband got about 23Mbs, changed to Annex M 20Mbs 2Mbs up,
Came to BT after O2/BE bought out by Sky,
Get about 13.5Mbs, even though Hub shows 17.5Mbs
second is ping time, over past month ping has jumped from ~33ms to 297ms-450ms, packet loss is off the scale.
I managed to convince Bt to give me another router, because read that might be issue, but issue has stayed.

  • Ping times

Hi just moved back to BT after a VERY long time away, our previous ISP when we did a speed test we never had a ping time above 50MS now with BT its never less than 100MS but often as high as 300MS this is not good!

are you sure there are no other applications downloading at the time of running the test, try a router reset (just 1) and test again, is it certain times of the day that you get a hi ping, and have you tried more than 1 speedtest website as I have found they sometimes give misleading results. If on wireless try a wired conenction, or try changing the wireless channel in your router config page. ATM TBM is telling me im downloading at 3 meg... but my router is synced at 2,018 and Ip profile is 1.5 meg. Stupid tester thing. I ping speedtest.net closes server at a 50.
I am no expert. Correct me when I am wrong. Learning is good!

  • Symptoms of Airport Parameter Corruption witn 802.11g WPA: ping times

    Hi,
I've had problems with MBP connecting and staying connected to a Netgear 802.11g network with WPA (password). An older G4 Powerbook would have no problems, so it is the intel MBP. This is with all the latest patches. One of the things I've noticed is if I ping the router ( open terminal, type: "ping 10.0.0.1" or whatever your router address is) I would have pings of about 1.633 ms but then there would be some pings which would take 1500 ms or 2000 ms! The G4 laptop was always around 1-2 milleseconds. The intel laptop was having some trouble, and it would eventually corrupt the Netgear so I had to reboot it. So by rebooting and zapping the pram, the ping times went to normal, like the G4 laptop. I am assuming some parameters get corrupted and rebooting + zapping pram clears out the corrupted parameters. And if I used iStumbler the corruption would return; so I don't do that.

  • Extremely High Ping time. Unusable internet for VOIP.

I am having extremely bad ping times due to which my VOIP phone service is literally unusable. My net meetings at home is having lost conversations and I am having real tough time working from home. Comcast service rep has visited my house twice and checked everything from my modem to comcast network end and everything seems to be fine.I have attached the ping times screenshot for my closest servers and both of which show unacceptable ping times.

Start by reviewing the troubleshooting tips at this sticky and post the requested information.

  • Ping time over 1500ms, what can I do?

    Hi All,
I have been with BT for years and just moved house. Because I was happy with the previous service and broadband performance I got BT to move my broadband over.
It has been a week of being connected now so the settling in period is over, I have the same equipment as my old house but now although the router states it is connected by DSL at 6600kbps the ping times are almost always over 1000ms and frequently over 1500ms. Downloads are very slow 15-30kb/s and I can't use any program which needs fast response times. occasionally the ping drops to 40ms for about 30 secs and everything seems fine but then just goes back to being slow again.
    Anyone have any ideas?

OK thanks everyone for your replies. Here are some details, I have tried multiple attached PCs with wireless and direct ethernet connections:
PC - Recent install and clean as a whistle
    windows 7 x64
    8GB Ram
    Core i7
MacBook Pro - thought it would be good to check it was not a windows problem.
    Core i5
    Snow Leopard
both are giving these kind of ping times for the gateway that my modem is linking to:

I have tried pinging the gateway from the hub using the linksys diagnostic page and get the same.
Every so often (about every hour) the connection (not the DSL) then drops and after it reconnects for a few moments the ping goes to aroun d 40ms. but the moment you try to download a web page etc the ping goes straight back to over 1000ms
It feels to me like a fault in the router at the exchange?
Thanks for anything anyone can add.

  • SA520W - performance problems, lag, INSANE ping times

    Anyone experienced this?
On my 520w, I can experience wired ping times of up to 242 MS when doing a speedtest (comcast's, as I have comcast). My wireless latency is faster.
this box freezes frequently. I'm using it in a small home based environment. I have seen a few times my CPU hit 100%. The processing STOPS, dead. I can verify this via DNS; I have a server hooked up and assigned it DNS from DHCP. When the freeze occurs, every system using the DNS supplied by DHCP is stopped. Even my RDP connection is paused and frozen, even though pings still go through. Computers using a different dns server (like comcast, opendns, etc) will not have the freeze in browsing or connectivity.
Also, while a lesser issue.. there's no way to change the power on the wireless. If I turn it up or down, the machine will never respond again and will have to be hard reset. Wired, wireless config disappear, it drops packets, and is toast. I've never figured out why.
Cheers if anyone in the community or if Cisco would like some logs to see.

Tom, a big thumbs up to you buddy.
I was 100% sure I'd done that previously. Totally sure. I apparently didn't -- not only that but I was on 2.1.71.
The firmware update was the 1st thing I looked at -- I have no idea how I missed this, unless I looked > 20 dec 2012 and obviously it wasn't available.
I shall update and renew my config, and we shall see, said the blind man.

  • Long ping times in Lion

Is anyone else having trouble with long ping times under Lion 10.7.3?  I'm seeing pings of around 1000msec to standard sites. My Leopard notebook shows normal ping times around 35msec to the same sites, over the same network connection.  I think this is new since I upgraded to 10.7.3.

Problem solved!  I just installed 10.7.4 and suddenly the pings are 35 ms as they should be.  Thanks for your input on this Linc, but we can now close this thread.  It'll only be of interest to someone else who has identified the same problem but has not yet made the jump from 7.3 to 7.4.  Cheers.

  • Slow Ping Times... Your opinion!

I am having unusually slow ping times at various times thru a wireless LWAPP network. I can be right next to (20 feet) away and ping times can vary 10-20ms. Occasionally they may go higher and I may lose a packet occasionally. On Autonomous Wireless networks I have designed this has never been an issue in any wireless network (40+). I am new to LWAPP/Controllers so I am not sure what to expect. I have read the notes for the 4.0.179 code on the controllers and found this:
Pinging from a Network Device to a Controller Dynamic Interface Pinging from a network device to a controller dynamic interface may not work in some configurations.
When pinging does operate successfully, the controller places Internet Control Message Protocol(ICMP) traffic in a low-priority queue, and the reply to ping is on best effort. Pinging does not pose a
security threat to the network. The controller rate limits any traffic to the CPU, and flooding the controller is prevented. Clients on the WLAN associated with the interface pass traffic normally.
Would this statement hold true of general pings from the wireless network thru the network to let's say a router on the wired network?
I rely heavily on pings to test layer 3 mobility and WLAN connectivity. Any ideas how to better test this?

This only holds true to pinging the controller, therefore the statement "limits traffic to the CPU". Traffic to other network devices does not go through CPU, so it is unaffected.
RF is a shared medium, and each site is different form the last. Also remember that LWAPP APs can change channels, and also briefly go off-channel to scan for rogues, noise, interference, etc... but retransmissions should take care of that. Long answer short, without a wireless sniffer, there's no confirming where your packets are going.

  • Extremely high ping times only fixed via restart

I have 2 BR350 in bridge to a remote tower that has an AP350 providing access to customers. The customers will call in with complaints of very slow access. I have been onsite to see that a user can login to the AP350(web) fine but the BR350 at the tower is slow and the BR350 at the far tower is for most purposes dead. The link still shows up around 65% to 75% signal strength. By restarting either BR350 the link will come back fine. I have been using Ping Plotter to keep track of the ping times and see that the response times sometime slow grow or instantly grow to around 2000ms to 4000ms. Ping times from the customer to the AP350 on the tower remain below 10ms during all of this.
I have had a similar problem with an AP350 in another city thats ping time do the same thing and require a reboot. It's ping time from the client side can range form 4ms to 800ms on regular usage as well. This customer has an average of 80% signal strength from the Workgroup Bridge.
How can I find out what is causing that strange high ping time on these situations.
    All units running firmware 12.00
    Thanks for the help.

Normally ,the first thing to do is to check the software version used. Here,in your case you are using the latest software release(12.00T). So now the problem can be isolated to other issues. Bridge software provides tools to show you the types of problems and where the bridge is encountering the problems. Two of the most helpful tools are the Throughput statistics and the Error statistics screen. You can get the procedure for collecting the error statistics using the following URLs:
    http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/102/wlan/br-ts-22950.shtml#conn
