Neither Firefox nor Thunderbird update automatically even though the settings are correct; the udates just "hang"

I have a MacBook Pro 13 10.7.5
neither of the program Updates for Firefox or Thunderbird complete the process; I have set for automatic updates; the message shows and say it is/they are updating but it just "hangs"
firewall is ON

If there are problems with updating or with the permissions then easiest is to download the full version and trash the currently installed version to do a clean install of the new version.
Download a new copy of the Firefox program and save the disk image (dmg) file to the desktop
*Firefox 17.0.1: http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all.html
*Trash the current Firefox application (e.g. open the Applications folder in the Finder and drag the Firefox application to the Trash) to do a clean (re-)install
*Install the new version that you have downloaded
*https://support.mozilla.org/kb/Installing+Firefox+on+Mac
Your profile data is stored elsewhere in the Firefox Profile Folder, so you won't lose your bookmarks and other personal data if you uninstall and (re)install Firefox.

    Can someone set me straight?

Check system preferences to make sure you have iCal and your photostream checkmarked to TRUE.
If you still have problems, give us more details.
Also, make sure the calendar in iCal you're using/looking at is not "On My Mac", but actually an iCloud one.

  • Incoming email will not format in html even though all settings are correct

I have Windows Vista operating system. Our IT guy recently updated my Thunderbird version to 31.5.0.5531 from a very old version. I have tried all suggestions from forums about settings for HTML viewing. At this point, I don't even get the option of reading an email in HTML. I forward a lot of messages to my coworkers, and I can't do that any more. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I would also gladly go back to an earlier version.
    Thanks Cindy

You ask about HTML, but most of your settings are about remote content. Is it images that are causing grief or HTML?

I installed a security program called Identity Finder whick requires a master password for Firefox on my laptop, which I like. However, even though my settings are to "Show my windows and tabs from last time," I have to manually add each link in a new tab each time. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Pure speculation, but maybe that Identity Finder program is deleting your browsing history which is how Firefox restores tabs and windows from the previous session. Check with technical support for that program or look at the manual.

Opening in the sidebar is the default for bookmarks that are created via a link or button on a website.
You can check the properties of a bookmark via the right-click context menu in the sidebar (Ctrl+B; Command+B on Mac).
In the Bookmarks Manager (Bookmarks > Show All Bookmarks) you can click the More button in the Details pane at the bottom right.
Make sure that "Load this bookmark in the sidebar" is not selected.

My ipod stills pauses when the display turns off, even though, my headphones are correctly attached (or flushed)

Does this happen still when you use another set of headphones? Have you check to make sure the headphone jack is clean and clear of debris?  If so, the jack may be faulty or damaged meaning you'll need to take or send your iPod in for service/repair.

Seems as though the automatic updates is not working. I have checked the boxes and unchecked them as well. Still no auto updating for the OS. They do work for my apps though. Attached is a command shell screen shot.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • RSS feeds update automatically, even though set for manual-only checks

The only time I want new feeds nagging at me is when I have time for scanning blogs. i.e., I click:
Mailbox > Get New Mail > RSS
I've set the RSS preferences to check manually, but I'm finding that the RSS feeds update intermittently and become a distraction. Is there anything I can do?

  • Is it possible to restore lost windows? Firefox crashed, and only 5 of my open windows reopened, even though all settings are such that all should be restored.

Unfortunately when I restarted Firefox after its most recent crash, most of my open windows and tabs were not restored as they are set to do and as they usually do after a crash. Not that I enjoy Firefox crashing, but usually everything reopens and life goes on. However, after a crash tonight, when I next opened Firefox about 80% of my open windows and tabs did not reopen.
After this (most recent) crash most of my windows and tabs were not restored:
    bp-e7f145b9-04cf-4de8-a4a4-8e2952130816
This was the most recent prior crash where my windows and tabs were restored:
    bp-c674bdd3-e905-44c0-9bc9-6b4982130815
**I would love to have these windows and tabs reset, or at least be able to find a list of them to reopen them manually.**
I am running Firefox 23.0. My antivirus and antispyware were run overnight last night with no issues.
(This is on my desktop computer using Windows XP. I also have a laptop which runs Firefox 23.0 which uses Windows 7. Firefox on it crashes as well, but thankfully thus far the windows and tabs have been restored. I use it less than I do my desktop, however.)
    Thank you very much!

Thank you -- I will do so. Still, I'm very eager to restore (or find a list of) my windows and tabs that were not restored after the last crash. Is it possible to do that from the last working restore?
The last two working restores were after the crash mentioned above, bp-c674bdd3-e905-44c0-9bc9-6b4982130815, and before that, bp-7f5b697e-c4c5-4cb8-9b15-9318c2130815.
FWIW, I just updated to 23.0.1. Thank you *very* much!

Firefox isn't saving my history. I'm not in private browsing mode and remember history is selected under the privacy settings. This only started after I updated to the latest version. All pre-update history is lost, too.

  • New iPhone 6 asks for my girlfriends password to update apps, even though the phone is connected to my itunes account?

My phone is hooked up to my iTunes account, but when i go to update apps, it asks for my girlfriends iTunes password? I only go the phone today, but havent had this trouble before with iPhone 4 or 5.
Can anyone enlighten me as to whats going on? - Thanks

If that's the case you may have to disable wifi syncing in her user account using her iTuens library.  I'm really not sure though.  If someone does, hopefully they'll jump in here.  The problem with chaning libraries is that when you do, iTunes will delete any iTunes media on the phone and replace it with the media in the iTunes library you sync with so hopefully this won't be necessary.

  • Single word search - Firefox tries first DNS looup even though the word does not look like a valid URL (browser.fixup... is disabled).

When I enter a correct domain name in the location bar, it is resolved without any problems ("domain.com"). When I enter multiple words, not constituting a valid domain ("some domain"), it is automatically searched in my preferred search engine. If I enter a single word ("domain"), which is _not_ a valid domain, Firefox still attempts to first resolve it (which takes about 15 seconds).
Is there a way to disable or fix this behavior?
    browser.fixup.alternate.enabled;false
    browser.safebrowsing.remoteLookups;false
    keyword.URL;http://www.google.com/search?ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=

It maybe better to use a (one letter) keyword bookmark if you want to do searches via the location bar. It is always possible that you want to access a local site without a TLD appended and in such cases you need to do a DNS look up.

  • My phone is telling me there is a billing problem with a precious purchase and won't let me download or update anything even though the apps in trying to download are free and updates are free. And I only have one card so I can't update my payment info

My phone is telling me that I have a billing problem with a precious purchase but I only have one card so I can't update my payment information so I can't update anything or download anything. What should I do?

Are you aware of any problem with a previous purchase ? If not then you should contact iTunes Support and see if they can tell you what it is (until it's sorted you won't be able to download anything from the store) : http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/- click on Contact iTunes Store Support on the right-hand side of the page, then Purchases, Billing & Redemption
If you go into the payment details section on your account then does it say anything about your card being declined or not accepter or if the security code needs re-entering ?

Sorry can't do anything more than offer support. We have been having this problem for months and support is clueless. Do you also have the migrating homepage issue? We can have 3 or 4 different homepage set-ups throughout the day. Between Verizon and FIOS, there isn't an employee in the corporation who cares about customer service. Since the failed email migrations dating back to Spring of 2011, we have had this login situation constantly. Our normal login count for a day is 12. We figure they are regulating traffic by having customers constantly login.
