I have always liked Verbatim DVD + R's but had to settle for a Sony 100 pack. Used about 50 or so, but a day ago both Toast & iDVD were ejecting themwith read errors. Like I mentioned, the DVD - R's work OK, so how could cleaning be a factor? I have a cleaner disk with little brushes but am reluctant to stick it into the slot.

Alternatives to Toast for burning DVDs

I have been using Toast for many years with mixed success. Each upgrade seems to hog more resources and sometimes freezes (needing a forced quit). I have tried system maintenance (permissions, scripts, trashing prefences etc) but cannot get it to be reliable.
So ... any recommendations for alternatives. I would like to burn DVDs with EyeTV recordings as well as Apple TV files.

What version do you have?
I have not had any issues with 10.x standard - the red box, not the blue box.
If you have 10, I know there's a couple of updates for 10.6.x compatibility.
OS X itself will burn data DVDs, but they will not be cross platform.

Just installed 10.4.9 - My LITE-ON DVD burner no longer will burn DVD-DL

I just installed 10.4.9 (I knew I shouldn't have..) and went to burn a Dual Layer DBD with Toast 8.0.1 and it won't burn -- it recognizes the DVD as D/L - but won't write to it (It thinks it does and immediately says "Writing Lead Out"...but nothing was written.
I have tried other burning applications, but no go. However, I can burn DVD Single Layers no problem...
What did 10.4.9 do and how??? I burned some D/L DVDs last night...is this just a coincidence??? Hard to believe it would be...that just after installing 10.4.9 my DVD burner no longer burns DVD D/L!!

i have a G4 500mhz AGP mac (upgraded to a 1.6ghz processor via a NewerTech card) with an internal CD/DVD player (not burner) and i have an external LaCie CD/DVD burner (the LaCie CD/DVD burner is only about 4 weeks old and i've burned maybe 8 to 10 DVDs on it)
i have had NO problem reading any DVD disks until just about a week ago.. i had bought a new Graphics DVD and it worked the first time i put it in the DVD player... the second time it would not work... (((this was the start of the problem of the purple-ish DVDs not mounting))) so, i thought i had just bought a faulty DVD, they replaced it and the new one still will not work at all.. the DVD will NOT work in my internal DVD player AND it will not work in my LaCie external DVD burner/player...
the internal drive just spins for a few minutes and the kicks the DVD out... the external LaCie drive spins for several minutes, then i finally get a message saying the disc is not readable.
what i have noticed is that any DVDs i put in will mount as long as they have a silver surface.... if the surface is purple-ish color, those are the DVDs that will not mount and keep ejecting
even DVDs that i have burned on the external LaCie DVD burner will not mount in the internal drive OR the external drive...
as i said, all of the DVDs that will NOT mount are the one's with a purple-ish surface... maybe that has something to do with the problem....
something must have happened somewhere because these purple-ish DVDs did used to work... i even did a brand new install of OS X.4 on a totally seperate hard drive and these purple-ish DVDs STILL would not work...
even booted into MacOS 9.2.2 and the STILL would NOT mount....
ANY info would be helpful...

Using Toast to burn DVD

Should I invest in purchasing Toast 9 to burn my standard DVDs? So many people keep talking about using Toast to burn the disc instead of using iDVD...is there a reason for this?

iDVD and Toast take very different approaches to serve users' desires in making video DVDs. iDVD has wonderful motion menus with sound while Toast has basic still, silent menus. iDVD is very limited in the video formats it can use for the source while Toast accepts a broad variety of video formats. iDVD only authors with uncompressed PCM audio while Toast can author with compressed Dolby Digital AC-3 audio which can leave more space for a higher video bit rate. Toast also has custom encoding settings whereas iDVD doesn't let you modify its settings.
What this means is Toast can't compare to iDVD and iDVD can't compare to Toast depending on what the user wants to have in a video DVD. Of course Toast does a lot more than create video DVDs.
If iDVD is meeting your needs then I'd say you don't need Toast for that purpose, but may want it anyway for other reasons. If you are finding iDVD too limited or too much work then I recommend Toast (or Popcorn 3) to give you more options.
As a disclaimer, I very rarely use iDVD because I usually don't have need for its menus, I prefer AC-3 audio on my DVDs and the source for many of my projects are existing MPEG 2 videos that would need to be re-encoded for use in iDVD. So I'm biased toward Toast. It doesn't mean I think Toast is "better"; just better for my needs.

MacPro will burn dvds but won't burn blu-rays anymore?

I've been using Compressor (ver. 3) to burn blu-rays and dvds of my movie for several months just fine. A few days ago after opening my blu-ray project in Compressor it did the usual: tray opens and it says "Please insert blu-ray media…" I put a blank disk in (the same kind I've been using all along) and pushed the keyboard eject button to close the tray but it didn't move. I manually pushed the tray closed and I could hear it spin up several times and then it spit the disk back out. I repeated this several times with no luck. I tried different blu-ray media (didn't work). I tried burning a dvd and it DID work, so I'm thinking it's not the blu-ray drive. However I tried burning with Disk Utility and it wouldn't work. I also tried to make a blu-ray burn folder and it wouldn't work. It doesn't make sense that it can burn dvds but not blu-rays.
I'm not sure what else to do. I haven't upgraded (still on Lion). Would upgrading to Mavericks fix this? Everything's been working great so I didn't want to upgrade and mess it all up. I fear taking it to an Apple Store will cost more than purchasing a new blu-ray burner.
Any thoughts or advice? Thank you for your help!

V3.0.3 Needs iDVD 3.0 To Burn DVD?

I'm trying to burn a movie onto a DVD in a format playable by standard DVD players. When I try to add my movie to an iDVD project in v3.0.3 of iMovie, it tells me that I need version 3.0 or later of iDVD to do it. Is 3.0 available for download for free? If so, please include link. If not, is there another way to make a DVD as outlined above? I have another DVD burning software (Toast), but I'd need to know how to format the files to get them to work...

Nope, to get the newer iDVD apps, you had to buy iLife (now at iLife '05).

Toast (depending on your version) will let you use your iMovie completed movie to create a DVD - but you won't get the 'pretty' menus you get with iDVD.

IDvd takes long to burn dvd

I am trying to burn a AVI movie file that I download onto a dvd+rw disc using iDVD but each time I do so the process takes hours and hours until i can't wait anymore and I stop it. Is there any other software that I could use where it wouldn't take so long to burn a movie onto a dvd. Also I have DVD Creator application and I tried that and it's the same thing or is this whole process suppose to take more than four hours to complete.

It's not so much the burning process that can take a while, more the rendering/conversion process.
What format is that AVI file?
Are you sending it straight to iDVD without using iMovie?

HT2801 my drive says it will burn dvd +r dl but it wont burn them

my drive says it will write a +r dl but when i go to write on it says it cant clabrate the laser

First step to try would be using a different brand of DVD+R DL. Some are better than others.
If you still have the problem, then it is likely that the laser for burning is defective. Contact Apple at the appropriate phone number on this page or carry the MacBook in to an Apple retail store or authorized service provider to get it fixed.

Burn DVD from video

Somewhat a rookie so go easy on me. I produce a 30 minute TV show in Final Cut Express. I print to video for my media that I give the TV station. I'm often asked to present one of my episodes to a club, etc. A DVD is most convenient for this. I've never had luck printing a good DVD from FCE...I'm sure it's my technique. So, I got the smart idea of using my edited and finished video that I would send to the TV station and use iDVD OneStep (iLife 09) to produce a DVD. Everything seemed to go fine until I put my new DVD in a DVD player...no sound. The image quality is very good and very happy with that...but no sound. What have I done wrong or is iDVD simply not made for this purpose?

There is a lot to this. Some basic.
DVD - is a standard in it self - CAN only do SD-Video (as old CRT-TVs at it's best)
Neither iDVD, Roxio Toast™ or DVD-Studio Pro - can do anything better.
(Roxio Toast 10 (11) Pro incl BD-component - Can burn to Blu-Ray and even small movies
as this on Standard DVDs - BUT they NEED a Blu-Ray Player to be viewed)
*DVD quality*
1. iDVD 08, 09 & 11 has three levels of qualities. (vers 7.0.1, 7,0.4 & 7.1.1)
iDVD 6 has the two last ones
• Professional Quality *(movies + menus up to 120 min.)* - BEST
• Best Performances *(movies + menus less than 60 min.)* - High quality on final DVD
• High Quality (in iDVD08 or 09) / Best Quality (in iDVD6) *(movies + menus up to 120 min.)* - slightly lower quality than above
About double on DL DVDs.

• FCE/P - Export out as full quality QuickTime.mov *(not selfcontaining, no conversion)*
• iMovie x-6 - Don't use ”Share/Export to iDVD” = destructive even to movie project and especially so

4. There has to be about or more than 25Gb free space on internal (start-up) hard disk. iDVD can't
use an external one as scratch disk (if it is not start-up disc).

6. I use DVD-R (no +R or +/-RW)
7. Keep NTSC to NTSC - or - PAL to PAL when going from iMovie to iDVD
8. Don’t burn more than three DVD at a time - but let the laser cool off for a while befor next batch.
iDVD quality also depends on.
• DVD is a standard in it self. It is Standard Definition Quality = Same as on old CRT-TV sets and can not
deliver anything better that this.
HD-DVD was a shortlived standard and it was only a few Toshiba DVD-players that could playback.
These DVDs could be made in DVD-Studio Pro. But they don’t playback on any other standard DVD-layer.
*Blu-Ray / BD* can be coded onto DVDs but limited in time to - about 20-30 minutes and then need

_ BD disks and burner if full length movies are to be stored

The BD-encoded DVDs can be playbacked IF Mac also have Roxio DVD-player tool. Not on any standard Mac or DVD-player
Full BD-disks needs a BD-player (in Mac) as they need blue-laser to be read. No red-laser can do this.
• HOW much free space is there on Your internal (start-up) hard disk. Go for approx 25Gb.
less than 5Gb and Your result will most probably not play.
• How it was recorded - Tripod vs Handheld Camera. A stable picture will give a much higher quality
• Audio is most often more critical than picture. Bad audio and with dropouts usually results in a non-viewed movie.
• Use of Video-editor. iMovie’08 or 09 or 11 are not the tools for DVD-production. They discard every second line resulting in a close to VHS-tape quality.
iMovie 1 to HD6 and FinalCut any version delivers same quality as Camera recorde in = 100% to iDVD
• What kind of movie project You drop into it. MPEG4 seems to be a bad choice.
other strange formats are .avi, .wmv, .flash etc. Convert to streamingDV first
Also audio formats matters. I use only .aiff or from miniDV tape Camera 16-bit
strange formats often problematic are .avi, .wmv, audio from iTunes, .mp3 etc

• What kind of standard - NTSC movie and NTSC DVD or PAL to PAL - no mix.

Region codes.
iDVD - only burn Region = 0 - meaning - DVDs are playable everywhere
DVD Studio pro can set Region codes.
1 = US
2 = EU

What it turned out to be was the "quality" settings in iDVD. The total clip time was NOT over 2 hours or 4.7GB, yet iDVD created massive visual artifacts on the "professional quality" setting.
I switched the settings to "high quality" which solved the problem. According iDVD help, "high quality" determines the best bit rate for the clips you have.
I have NEVER seen iDVD do this before, especially when I was under the 2 hour and 4.7GB limits.
For anyone else, there seem to be 2 places in iDVD to set quality settings, the first is under "preferences" and the second under "project info." They do NOT seem to be linked (i.e. if you change one, the other is NOT changed). take care, Mario

• Minimum of 25Gb free space on Start-Up hard disk
• No other programs running in BackGround eg EnergySaver
• Don’t let HD spinn down or be turned off (in EnergySave)
• Move hard disks that are not to be used to Trash - To be disconnected/turned off
• Goto Spotlight and set the rest of them under Integrity (not to be scanned)
• Set screensaver to a folder without any photo - then make an active corner (up right for me) and set
pointer to this - turns on screen saver - to show that it has nothing to show

Want to record edit and burn dvds of videos from canon camcorder what is the best way

what is the easiest way to transfer recordings from my canon camcorder hd to dvds after editing. The new imovie does not have idvd on it to burn dvds.

I'm assuming you're editing in iMovie? If you still have an older retail version of iLife, you can use that to install iDVD - I am using it with mavericks. Or, the retail 09 and 11 iLife disks are still available at some online resellers. The best thing out there still is iDVD with its customizable menus, themes, etc. However, there are other options for just burning: one good ons is Roxio Toast; then there is the free app Burn (basic I'm told, but works). Or google for others. Personally, I'd get iDVD.
The new iMovie (or the older versions) did not have iDVD built in - it's just a link to the iDVD application. FWIW, I prefer to use the older iMovie versions because they have more quality options to choose from when exporting. With the new iMovie, choose to export to file and choose your recording size and then you can drag that file into a burning app (or iDVD if you get it).

Burned dvd skips

hi there - am waiting on final cut universal to arrive and am at the moment just needing to put a 5 min music video that a friend did from imovie onto DVD
have managed to burn it fine but playing on a dvd player it skips like mad although it plays fine on the imac. on 3 dvd players ive tested it it skips like crazy but on the imac it does skip but not nearly as bad - its more like a second pause
my friend used a few slow mo's etc but basically needing to find a remedy for this - imovie suggests putting quality to standard but thus far no joy.
anyone out there have any suggestions - i downloaded deinterlacer 2.7 but have no real scooby as to using it - have to say imovie is a real pain in the backside!!!!

some dvd players don't "like" fast burned dvds and not every brand of dvd-r...
burn it again (if your Mac doesn't accept it, you have to anyhow), choose a different brand and don't use dvd-r marked "16x" or higher.....
in case you own Toast, create an .img with iDVD, use Toast to burn and set drive speed to 1x or 2x ....

Neither is suitable for burning DVDs or BluRay media. They are DVD rippers/converters, not DVD authoring tools. Handbrake doesn't produce any format suitable for DVD Authoring. And while MacDVD Ripper can create .mov files even that's not a guarantee the file can be used for DVD authoring. You need DVD Authoring software like Roxio Toast to burn DVDs or BluRay disks.
Most BluRay players can play both standard def DVDs and high def BluRay disks. Which kind do you want to burn? And what exactly is your source media (video) that you want to burn?
And if you want to burn BluRay disks, you need a BluRay burner.

Is there a way to burn DVDs at speeds lower than 4x?

Hi to everybody. I need to burn DVDs at speeds lower than 4x (preferably 1x) but both Burn and LiquidCD (together with Disk Utility) are unable to. I believe that this depends on the fact that alle these utilities rely on Apple's optical Burning Framework. Is there a way to get rid of this problem without needing to buy Toast or Disco (I very rarely burn CDs and an expense in this direction wouldn't be justifeied).

Insert a blank disc (it's not going to write, so the disc won't be wasted) then look in the "Disc Burning" section of System Profiler (Utilities folder). It will show the supported burning speeds for that disc in that drive. With my Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-115D and a Verbatim DVD-R 16X disc, it shows:
Write Speeds: 4x, 6x, 8x, 12x, 16x, 20x
These speeds are determined by the drive and brand of disc, and cannot be changed by software. If you tried to run a drive at a slower speed, the drive's servo might not be able to keep the rotation smooth enough (so the dots are burned evenly spaced) without adding a heavy flywheel, and the laser would need to produce longer pulses at lower intensity. Laser diodes may quit when the power is reduced too much. For this drive, it must be the minimum power that laser will operate at, since the drive will burn DVD-RW discs at 1x or 2x. The RW must need more energy to burn each dot, so the laser power does not have to be reduced too much.
Why do you need to burn at slower speeds?
If you don't want to use DVD-RW, you may be able to find some older, lower speed DVD-Rs

Burns DVDs, WON'T play commercial DVDs

So I seem to be having the REVERSE problem from everyone else. My iMac G4 (17", 1GHz processor, 512 MB RAM), which I just bought for a piddling $200, will play and burn CDs / CD-RWs just fine. It will also correctly identify blank DVDs that I stick in the drive. It will BURN DVDs. In a few hours, I'll be able to tell you if it will read data DVDs.
The ONLY THING it won't do is play COMMERCIAL DVDs. I pop in a video DVD, it spins up, tries to read it, then spits it back out. Now, I know the not playing DVDs problem is not a unique one, but in reading on these forums, that seems to always be a symptom of the DVD laser diode having gone bad, which is certainly NOT the case here (as it's merrily burning away).
My GUESS would be that--somehow--my installation is missing the CSS library necessary to decode commercial DVDs. I had a similar problem getting my iPod Touch to talk to iTunes. But is that even possible? And, if so, how do I go about rectifying this issue?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I read somewhere else on this forum about someone having a similar problem to mine. He took the iMac to a service depot, but when he got it there, they couldn't replicate the problem. He took it home, and HE couldn't replicate the problem. As in, it was now fixed. Turns out that just unplugging the unit gave the Superdrive a chance to "reset."
So I unplug my iMac to test this out, as well as to see if I can unscrew the access panel to determine how easy it'd be to upgrade its RAM. Well, I could only get one of the screws out, but when I plugged it back in, turned it back on and popped in the collector's edition of "2001: A Space Odyssey," DVD Player came up and began playing the disc! Never has "Thus Sprach Zarathustra" sounded so amazing!

Do I need a software to burn dvds to my macbook?

I just wanted to know if I need a certain kind of software to burn dvds to my macbook and create dvd's.

You can use a program called Handbrake which will burn dvd's onto your computer and then you won't have to have the disk anymore to watch it on your MacBook.
It will also put it in a format so you can put the dvd's that you rip onto your iPod which is what I use it for but you can also use Handbrake for what you are wanting also.
It doesn't take that long either, maybe like 20-30 min but thats not bad.
