NEO 4 platinum questions

hello all,
been lookin thru the posts and havent come many answers  so i figured id start this
specs are in sig
the first board i recieved was crap ..the sata would not turn off regagrdless of what drives i used  serial or ide , emailed msi and after 2 weeks and a threatening email  recieved a 3.22 bios that completely crashed the system  so it wouldnt even post.
got a new 1 and heres wher im at:
first question is the corsair memory ..ive tested this with memtest  and on my abit an7 and dfi lanparty with no issues!
i used this in the new setup  in the first dual channel slots guess 1 n 3 (first green and purple)  anyway i get  blue screens and hardware errors leaving games or just sittin idle a the desktop
moved to the second dual channel and the errors have all but stopped maybe 1 a week leaviun a game.
looking thru msi and the test report book i notice the corsair is not supported was wonderin if its me?
is there a better brand of mem for this board?
second , whats the best way to update the chipset/nforce drivers? removed them as i would on my socket a boards and get so unstable its scary

First go to Corsairs page. While AMD and MSI won't recommend them Corsair does list what to set memory timings and VDimm in Bios to so that they work. Check them with Memtest86. Once those are stable most of the problems will go away as they are likely memory issues. Second get the latest NVidia drivers and install them. I hope this is a clean install of windows so you aren't making problems for yourself right off the bat.
Now go to Guru3d.com and get the latest NVidia drioves, Coolbits2 and the PCI Latency tool.
Once the Vid drivers are installed install Coolbits. Enter your display properties and on that Ultra you should set the 2d clock to match the 3d clock speed. Now open the PCI latency tool and make sure to set the latency of the Vid card to 64. That same goes for any other device that is higher than 64.
Reboot and try it out. Let us know how it goes or if you have any questions from there.

  • K8N Neo 4 Platinum Questions...

I'm going to be upgrading to a 7800GTX soon and will have to replace my mobo which is a K8N Neo 2 Platinum. I am currently using an Antec True 550 ps, which has 30 amps on the 12v rail. However, it is only a single rail ps and it has a 20 pin connecter. I plan on upgrading to a K8N Neo 4 board and was wondering if my ps is still okay even though it's only a single rail. I read the sticky and it seemed to suggest that single rail was still preferable but I just wanted to make sure I wasn't mis-reading anything.  Secondly, does the K8N Neo 4 use a 20 or 24 pin header? If it uses the 24 pin will I be okay using my current ps which is only a 20 pin? Moreover, would I be advised to purchase a 20->24 pin adapter or should I just plug the 20 pin into it's corresponding pins?
    The rest of my system:
    Winchester 3500+
    DVD burner
    CD burner
OCZ 2 GB (2x1024) Platinum DDR 400 memory
    Haupaugge PVR 250
    WD 160 GB SATA HD
    Thanks for any advice

K8N Neo4 Platinum has compatibility issues with nVidia 7800 cards. There is a capacitor very close to the PCI slot which makes the installation impossible. You may search the forum for more info.
Your PSU is OK as long as you won't be overclocking as your card consumes a lot of juice/I'd still go for more Ampers on the 12V rail/. It's not really a problem whether you have 1 or 2 12V rails....The mobo uses 24pin header but 20 is OK as well....You don't need an adaptor for that.

  • Three or so Neo 4 Platinum questions

    Greetings,
    Question 1:
I'm running a beta BIOS version from about a month ago so that I could get my system to boot while using my 300 GB Maxtor hard drive.
I saw MSI released a new BIOS on their website, but it really says very little about what it fixes. Is my BIOS W7100NMS.113 newer than what's posted on the MSI website?
    Question 2:
I notice everyone keeps mentioning this "D-Bracket" thing. There wasn't one in my retail box, but I checked on the side of the box, and it says that a D-Bracket was part of the contents. What gives? Could MSI mail one out to me since I apparantly paid for one?
    Question 3:
My computer fails to boot if I have my Dell 2405FPW's USB hub hooked up. I don't see a way to disable the BIOS from trying to boot from USB devices, how can I have my hub plugged in and still be able to boot?
    Thanks!

The D-Bracket sits above a PCI slot and has 4 small round LED's along with additional USB ports that are accesible from the back of the computer.  There should be info about it in your manual.
Sorry I don't have any input on your other questions.

  • Neo 2 platinum questions

Just a few quick questions before I do some more tests.
How much hope is there for a fix for the temps showing correctly cos surely bad end of 40-50c+ idle aint right?
I am getting the Detecting Array error that some of you are having and am getting around this by just ctrl-alt-del 1 maybe 2 times on reboot, would be nice to get a better fix apart from maybe some new ram or psu (surely my psu should be good to go). Any ideas?
I must say I was rather unimpressed with the info that came with my board - no raid info whatsoever, no firewall info bs bs blah blah blah. Thanks to SAB (I think) in his FAQ, although it didnt point me to the correct place on the driver cd, I managed to get the firewall shiznit on. But still MSI have been proper garbage tbh with this board so far compared to the last 64 bit via chipset, i hope i aint made another expensive purchase that leads to more expensive purchases (lol who am i kidding).

Well without my wife's pc i would have prolly be cream crackered cos I didnt have a clue when it came to the nvidia raid (no info in mobo docs whatsoever) and went straight to the faq. I must say the 64 bit via forum was clearer but then there was only one chipset out at my time in there. Whats the score on the bios updates, any temp corrections on the horizon? I can prolly deal with the detecting raid array error for a while but it would be cool to know its not my ram, although  I can throw that in the S754 Via thats being passed on the wife's pc and sell the Twinmos (winbond) from that to someone else.

  • K8N Neo 2 platinum freezes. NB Fan problem ?

    Hi all,
I've had a Neo 2 platinum for almost 3 years now, which was running absolutely good.
Then, I began to have random freezes on the Windows desktop (not with games).
I thought I ought to clean up a bit the beast's inside as dust could be the problem.
After cleanup, same crashes, but even more and more often, to the point last WE, it was
freezing at BIOS level, before booting. Now it seems I can no longer boot (not even the startup
beep of the mobo is heard !). Only the CPU and case fans spin, nothing more ....
My question: since I've noticed the NB fan was blocked (probably died like the countless others), could it be because of that I can no longer boot, even with a cold system ?
I'm trying to guess what part I need to replace, PSU, fan, or mobo ...
    Setup: AMD64 dual-core 3800+
              K8N Neo 2 plat.
2 GB of RAM (no recall of the mark)
              Antec 450W PSU
              NVIDIA 7800 GT GPU

Quote from: Fredrik on 02-December-08, 05:34:35
With the NB fan having a problem I wonder if the processor fan might be dusty.
450W Antec sounds like one that came with the case. Is that so?
Well, the CPU fan was dusty, before I cleaned it, yes. Now, it's clean, and is definitely not the problem.
The 450W PSU was with the Antec case, yes. I was kinda suspecting it to be the problem, since it decided to die after just below one year of the system's life (it probably grew fed up of all the power cuts we have in the winter, here, thus I RMAed it and put an MGE UPS), but I think I can rule it out now. All equipment are just booting OK, until disk query is issued. That + the dead fan makes the cause for me ...

  • Buying a K8N Neo 4 Platinum mobo - need some answers

    Hi,
First post here, so I should say I did a search and did actually read the stickys.
Like I said, I'm getting the MSI K8N Neo 4 Platinum and need to know:
    1. Does it support NCQ?
    2. Can I use  "PDP SYSTEMS Memory Dual Channel Kit 184-Pin 1GB (512MBx2) DDR PC-3200, Model PDC1G3200LLK" with it?
(And have it working @ 2-3-2-5-T1 Dual Channel like it should without OC)
2.1 Can I use 4 dimms of this memory without going down to 333mhz?
    3. I'll also get a 6600GT, DVD-RAM,DVD-ROM, 200GB HD - which PSU I should go with?
I wanted to get a TT410W, but heard I should go with "Enermax 350W EG365P-VE FMA 20/24Pin Power Supply" because it gives higher 12V rail power.
I dont plan on doing OC
Thanks in advance for your answers, and sorry about my english.

    Chrisss,
I think that Tiresmoke's point is that your statements aren't productive, I don't see a history of you trying to ask any of the well versed vetrans here for any help regarding the stability of your system, or inherent problems with the mobo in question. You also don't even list the components that make up your system in your signature which might allow someone to help you without you even asking a valid question.
Statements like this; "I have so many stability issues it's not even funny. I have not overvlocked anything and the PC crashes randomly." simply aren't meaningful without knowing the pertenent facst surrounding your issues. Furthermore, the problems you have may have nothing whatsoever to do with the motherboard.
Sixth, this is a good motherboard for your stated needs, I run the SLI version and have nothing but positive things to say about it. I did extensive research before buying this product, and it really paid off, this is a great motherboard.
Actually yes i did ask: https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=75700.0 But only one person helped me. It could be that the SLI version is more stable. Just read the posts. there are a lot of people with issues with the K8N Neo4 Platinum. Not too many with the SLI. So it's not only me.

  • Overclocking Neo 2 Platinum

    Hiya all!
I am trying to overclock Neo 2 Platinum with San Diego 3700+ and 1Gb of Corsair 3200XL Platinum... Now I can go up to about 2.75GHz at 250*11 at 2.7 vdimm and 1.68 vcore. I'm using Arctic Freezer 64 with Arctic Silver ceramique. BIOS is 1.A TCCD by Sideffect
I have a couple of questions:
    1) Assuming that I would be running at 2.7GHz at 1.7v, how long my processor is likely to survive if it goes to about 60 degrees under load (S&M test).
2)I'm trying to reach 270*10, but having some trouble obtaining such high FSB  (even at low multiplyers). Relaxing memory timings doesn't seem to do much good. Any idea what i can do with this? I was thinking about upping AGP frequency and AGP volt. (AGP freq at about 75 atm)
Finally can ppl with San Diego 3700+ CPU's post their top overclocks voltages, BIOS's and cooling (air cooling only). I would be most grateful, as I want to know how well can it potentially overclock... (yes I know that every chip is different).
I must say I'm quite impressed at 2.7GHz, My CPU beats stock FX 55 in benches. Games run pretty sweatly as well...

Have you tried NOT increasing your vcore voltage to keep temps down.  I tried increasing mine a couple of times, but it really had little or no affect on cpu speed limit.  Mine's just a 3200+ winnie, but at 10x280 using PC3200 without a divider, and the temp with vcore at 1.478v stayed under 50*C.  I tried a divider, 166, cause I couldn't get passed 2800, but memory was not limiting me, it's that 2800 was as far as the processor could go and still be stable.
I always forget exact temp and voltages, but I've got a pic somewhere here....
See, I was wrong, vcore was at 1.46v and temp was at 45*C, but if I remember correctly the temp
increased to around 47*C after I was on the system for a while, but as you can see, I had the CPU
fan cranked up all the way.  The TT Volcano12 sounds like a mini vacuum cleaner at 6000 rpm.

Looking for feedback on K8N Neo NF4 Platinum SLI, LUV THIS BOARD

Im no pro but with your raid setup you need to stay with bios 3.0, 3.1 or 3.2.  I understand that 3.3 & 3.4 causes problems but the new 3.53 beta bios fixes the problems in 3.3 & 3.4.  See below:
    https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=80933.120
Regarding your pcie clock, if you are using coolbits and nvidia drivers only (no MSI drivers at all), then I have used nvidia's ntune to help set the clock.  For my x1 msi 6600gt, working backwards from the bus speed optimization it equalled to 106...but I am really not good at this and you should post your question under the VGA portion of this forum for a better answer to that 1 question.
However, using MSI's DOT works well too and its automated.
Btw, the pcie setting has nothing to do with your cpu/memory overclock.

  • Neo2 platinum questions..

So I have had my 64 bit system for a couple weeks and had gathered a couple questions.
    my system
    K8N Neo 2 Platinum (Bios 1.8 )
    AMD 64 3200+ (Venice core, 939)
    OCZ PC3200 1 gig(2x512)
80 gig SATA Seagate 7200.7 model
    ATI Radeon 9800
    Creative Audigy sound card
    Antec 350W
    Antec case
Questions 1:  Should I have DMA (maybe udma) enabled in the bios for my sata drive (it currently is off).
Question2: Live update doesn’t search for everything. It finds the bois but under main board drivers there is only one listed for the Ethernet divers.  I feel like there should be some chipset drivers and some controller drivers or something else.  The VGA drivers are a list of some weird files that for some I have a more current version the online source. And under the last one on software there lists some utilities that I didn’t install (on choice) yet none that I did (like core center, digicell).  The main board drivers concern me the most.
Question3: Core centers over clocking program and cool and quiet.  Does this work well or should I stick to the Bios way of over clocking if I wish to do so? Is cool and quiet just a fan control program or does it actually have more of an effect on the Processor, and should I keep it enabled?
    Load CPU: 51 C
    idle CPU: ~40 C
Question 4: The new updated bio has some thing called S.M.A.R.T. hard drive or something close to that, what is it?
Any other hints or suggestions for me on my system????

    Hello Arcacia987 & huncherman,
Supershank gave you the answer to get S.M.A.R.T. readings when using "speedfan".
Everest will also provide you with Smart Readings as long as you have a paying/registered version, just look below for how to get to S.M.A.R.T. readings using Everest...
Or go to this URL: Everest ScreenShot
Latest BIOS version for our MBs is:  "W 7025 NMS V1.8 041205 16:32:07".  This BIOS has the HDD S.M.A.R.T. option disabled iin its codes and offers no option to reactivate it through the COMS menu.  If you stop the 3rd page of your boot process (using "PAUSE/Break" key) you will then have time to read the following message about one quarter of the way down:
"Pri. Master Disk HDD S.M.A.R.T. capabilities disable"
Actual statement position may varied slightly due to your different harware configuration.   I read in one of these forum thread that S.M.A.R.T. capabilities may possibly be brought back with the next BIOS update.  This has not been confirmed by MSI.
    Best regards,

  • K8N Neo 2 Platinum Computer just...stopped working! Help needed please.

Hey all. About hmm, a month ago I built myself a new PC (first time I'd done it from scratch and got some useful help here) Specs were:
    MSI K8N Neo 2 Platinum, A64 3200+ Venice, 1GB DDR Corsair Value, Radeon 9800 Pro 128mb, 40GB Hard Disk IDE, 80GB Hard Disk IDE, CD R/RW Drive and a Tagan 420W (23A 12V+) PSU.
Ok, it worked the day I built it just fine and has NO hick-ups or any indication of a problem for the past month. Running temperature was very cool etc. Now, I last turned it on about 24 hrs ago, downloaded some PDF files, shut it down. All was fine. Woke up this morning. Pressed the power button: ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. ZIp. No hum, fan movement, anything.
Now, considering it seems to have broken whilst being turned off. What could be the problem? So far I've tried:
        * Using a different power socket
        * Using a different plug
        * Reconnecting the power switch and motherboard power connectors
None of those worked. There wasn't a thunderstorm or anything so I don't think any kind of surge would have been the problem. I havn't tried manually shorting the power switch connectors. What's a safe way to do that? Any other suggestions? How can I test my PSU is infact doing something?
    Thanks

Try the easy way first, disconnect every cable from the back of the computer. Do a CMOS clear/normal as instructed in the manual. Connect the display(with power off), keyboard and power cable. Turn on PSU, press power switch, if it fires up, press and go into bios and do your settings, save and exit. Power off and connect the rest of your external stuff. Power up.
    >
No luck :( Is it likely that my PSU has fused/broken in some way since I'm getting no response or fan movement?

  • Boot Problem with K8n Neo 2 Platinum

I cant get my Computer to load the bios
Sometimes when I restart my computer it will lock up in the Bios Sign on and the only way to get it to boot through is to keep resetting the computer and turning the power off and on. It does this on a random basis, Ive also had problems with it locking up if the dynamic oc is turned on.
Has anybody heard of this happening or know how to fix it?

    SB audigy 2 ZS
    LiteOn cd/dvd drive
    LiteOn dvd burner
    Windows XP SP2

Corsair memory is known to be troublesome with AMD64.
Nevertheless, if everything is set correctly, it'll work.  I've been running the LLPRO 3200 1GB kit at 220MHz without any noticable problems.  Run a couple of rounds with Memtest86+ to verify memory functionality.
Can you please give your specifications on the power supply unit (PSU), especially the amperage on the +12 volt rail.
    Anders.

  • Problem with K8N Neo 4 Platinum

Hi I am new on this forum.
I have problem with proper configuration of the BIOS in K8N Neo 4 Platinum. My processor is Athlon 64 3000. It has 1800 clock. My BIOS  makes default 200MHz x 5. It makes 1000 MHz clock. Will it be good if I change at 200 x 9?
Other thing: I tried to change at 200 x 9 but in Windows (2000) is still 200 x 5 (acc. to Core Cell). When I chanded on 200 x 7,5 all in Windows was ok. Core Cell showed 200 x 7,5. How I may resolve this problem?

I have my memory in green slots. Does dual channel works in this case?
    - No  Green = Channel A, Purple =Chanel B use Green nearest cpu & adjacent  purple slot.

    HT freq.   5x
That's your HT multiplier as mentioned by Some1ne not the Adjust CPU Ratio which is the CPU multiplier.
Your CPU is running at the correct speed.
DDR Clock: 167 MHz s/be 200 - this should chnge when memory is in right slots.
Change memory over & let's have a look @ those settings then.

  • Sapphire Theatrix 550 Pro and Neo 2 Platinum problem

Anyone manged to install and get a Sapphire Theatrix 550 (ATi Theater 550) TV Capture card to work on a MSI NEO 2 Platinum motherboard? I have two computers using the NEO 2 and the Theatrix does not work on either. The "ATI Unified AVStream" device has a conflict with the "PCI Standard PCI-to-PCI bridge". The resources section is greyed out on the "PCI Standard PCI-toPCI bridge" device. I have installed and tried both Windows Media Center and Windows XP
I have no idea how to correct this.    Anyone have any ideas or better still solutions?
    Thanks
    Dal

    Richard
I have returned the original motherboard as It would only post to the "Platinum logo"  4 time out of 10 starts! I have now installed the Theatrix card into my other machine which also supports a MSI Neo2 Platinum MB.
Unfortunately I can not try all the PCI slots on this machine as it is water cooled and the GFX and chipset waterblocks prevent access to slots 1 and 2
I did try slot 3 and when I attempt to install the drivers the computer resest it's self consistantly towards the end of the installation! I have tried running the ATI Catalyst Driver setup program and installing manually and the machine resets it's self at the end without warning!
The card is now in slot 4 and the drivers installed. However I am getting "This device cannot find enough free resources that it can use. (Code 12)" like before.

  • Is a 24 pin atx cable needed for the k8n neo 4 platinum?

i have a Thermaltake Silent Purepower 480 Watt PSU. i am thinking about upgrading from an msi k7n2 delta to the k8n neo 4 platinum motherboard.
if i do this, do i need this adaptor cable?

    ryansebiz,
That Power Supply has the 24 Pin Cable as part of its cables. You do not need any adapters.
    Take Care,
    Richard
thanks richard, you saved me $11 on a cable adaptor

  • K8N Neo 4 Platinum-Does it come w SLI-Bridge?

i looked thru the package contents in the manual for the neo 4 platinum and couldnt find any mention of a SLI-bridge being part of the package.
according to this article at hexus.net, the neo 4 is capable of "Dual Bridge System (DBS)"...some form of dual graphics rendering...
    http://www.hexus.net/content/reviews/review.php?dXJsX3Jldmlld19JRD05NTc=
to run DBS, is a SLI-bridge not needed?
or if it is needed and not included as part of the package, how does one acquire it?

You're thinking of the Diamond version, which has two full length 16x pci-e slots and runs on the full fledged sli chipset.
The Neo4 Platinum is based on the nv4 Ultra chipset and ships with one full 16x pci-e slot and one 2x pci-e slot, and will render a form of sli.
