Neo Platinum XP install on RAID problems

Hi, this is my first post on these boards so I'm hoping someone will be able to help.
I'm building a new system using:
Neo Platinum Mobo
Twin WD Raptor SATA drives
This is the problem:
I have installed the two Raptors on SATA ports 3 & 4 and enabled these in BIOS. I have also enabled 3 & 4 as RAID and set up a striped array. I have then proceeded to install Windows XP (standard, no service pack). Past the F6 driver setups without problem but then after a short while a blue screen appears saying that windows has encountered problems and is shutting down to avoid damaging the system. This message also mentions viruses or badly terminated drives.
I have tried several times but this window always appears.
I was able to install xp without problems on one of the SATA drives once I had disabled the RAID array but obviously I want to be able to make use of RAID.
I have checked and double checked all connections etc and all seems fine. getting desperate here and would really appreciate some guidence.

A couple of points to add to all that:
1. How about the rest of the specs of your system, especially the PSU specs (max amps on each rail).
2. Are they 74GBRaptors or 36GB? If 74GB you should slipstream SP1a or SP2 into your Win XP first because the combined capacity will be greater than the OS can recognise. There are lots of sites with instructions for this. My favourite is here (Nero 6 version).  You can also look at XPCREATE.
3. The original XP did not support UDMA6 and I wonder if that may be another reason for your problems.  It shouldn't make any difference but then problems are often caused by things that shouldn't really matter.
I would certainly suggest you install from a CD with SP1 or SP2 slipstreamed.

  • NEO Platinum (754 nForce3) SATA RAID Question

Because my ASUS Mainboard died yesterday, i am planing to buy the NEO Platinum for 754 socket. As i can see in manual, there is option in BIOS to disable or enable RAID function for each SATA port. There are 2x2 separate SATA ports, but only one SATA Controller.
I have 3 SATA Harddisk - 2 are in RAID0 Stripeset, and one drive as normal, standalone drive. My question:
Is it posible to connect the 2 RAID0 drives on SATA ports 3 and 4 and use them as RAID0 Stripeset, but at the same time to connect the 3rd standalone drive on port 1 or 2 in normal mode, also NO RAID use?
Theoraticaly, ase in manual - it should be posible (because you can switch the RAID function on or off for each SATA port, but on the other side - phisicaly - its only ONE SATA controller on board.
I need fast reply, so i can order the board in webshop. Thanx.

Thanx people, but now i habe another question. On my ASUS board i have connected 2 RAID drives on Silicon Image RAID controller - but the NEO Platinum have nVidia RAID controller.
Can i migrate with the RAID drives to another RAID controller without loose of data? I mean, i know that i must install again WinXP, thats no problem - the thing is, i want to keep my data on other partitions untouched. So, i have to boot to nVidia RAID options - to set a new Stripeset, but can i also mark the set as "healthy" and use it normaly (offcourse with fresh XP install on C:)?

  • K8n Neo Platinum non-booting SATA RAID setup question

I've spent several hours searching an reading trying to find out how to setup a non-bootable SATA RAID. All I can seem to find are posts about bootable installs using F6 and the drivers on a floppy.
I have setup the disks in the bios an defined the array an everything checks out. But when I boot back to WindowsXP it only sees 2 drives that it cannot find drivers for even if I point it to the correct Nvidia directory. I attempted to just reinstall the drivers but that caused a Bluescreen from a corrupt driver file that I then had to go into the repair console to copy from a floppy.
The manual an a couple of posts here say that I should go into Admin Tools-> Disk Management an it will then popup a wizard. But I'm not getting that far.
I currently have the disks on SATA 1 and 2 but will move them tonite because I've read its better for them to be on 3 and 4.
This is on a K8N Neo Platinum 7030 on Windows XP SP2.  If anyone could help or just point me to where I can find help it would be greatly appreciated.

When the raid controller is enabled in bios and you start windows you can install the nvidia raid driver
    from within windows .
Use the add hardware wizard from control panel .
    Start the add-hw wizard .
Yes i have connected the hw - next .
Add a new hw device (bottom of the list ) -next .
Install the hw that i select manually from a list - next .
    Select scsi/raid controller - next .
    Choose have disk .
Then browse for the location of the nvraid.inf file

  • MSI K8N Neo Platinum & Crucial Ballistix 512MB RAM Problem

I have had MSI K8N Neo Platinum and 1x Crucial Ballistix 512MB RAM for 11 months.
I have had 1x Crucial Ballistix 512MB RAM for 2.5 months, for a total of two.
    I have had MSI GeForce 6600GT (NX6600GT-VTD) 128MB AGP for 1 month.
For about 1.5 to 2 weeks, I have been seeing random crashes while playing PC games.
I started a thread on the Hard OCP forums a few days ago.  I did not know MSI had forums =)
Rather than re-typing, I may as well just post the link:
    http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=934956
My issue is also similar to this one:
    https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=83799.0
    Thanks for the help.

ALL RIGHT, after almost    FOUR    months my issue is FINALLY    resolved.
It is amazing how much time passes when you are hesitant to buy parts unless you are 95% sure it will fix the problem.
OK, here is an update as to what I remember.
I went to BIOS 1.4 and tried many different physical and BIOS RAM configurations (Different seating, different number of DIMMs, different RAM timings, voltages, etc).
I concluded that I could not make my PC 100% stable, but I could get it darn close.  With certain settings, such as DDR400, 2-2-2-6, 1T, 2.80V, Aggressive Timing enabled, Memtest failed test #5 every time (this is spec for my RAM).  With other settings, such as DDR333, 2.5-3-3-7, 2T, Auto V, Aggressive Timing enabled, Memtest failed test #5 maybe once out of 5000.
I also concluded that the RAM voltage and Aggressive Timing setting was having a big impact.  Some settings would not work (failed Memtest) with RAM at 2.80V but would work with RAM at Auto V.  Some settings would not work (failed Memtest) with Aggressive Timing enabled but would work with it disabled.
Finally, I started to occasionally get R,G,R,G (Processor Initialization) on the D-Bracket upon cold-start & warm-start, which suggests a PSU issue:
    https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=76972.msg542545#msg542545
That pushed me over the top, and I decided to buy a new PSU (TG-480-U22) and a new SATA HDD (WD2500KS) just because.
Problem solved.  Thanks for all the help.
I will continue to buy MSI in the future just because of these forums…and a good product of course!

  • K8N Neo Platinum + Sonata Front Panel Audio Problem

    Hello,
The front panel audio speaker output is reversed when using headphones on my K8N Neo Platinum and Antec Sonata case. If I swap the left and right front panel audio output signal connectors, the headphone speakers are fine, but then my normal front speakers are reversed. All other connectors seem to be plugged in correctly. I've tried using nvswap, but doesn't seem to work on nForce3. Currently using Realtek driver version 5.10.0.5620 (had the same problem with the drivers included on mb cd) on WinXP Pro SP1 and 5.1 speaker setup (would like to use FPA for mic/headphones while gaming).
Let me know if you need any additional info.
    Thanks.

I am having the same problem as well.  Was able to correct front output jack by switching the connections.  But rear audio is still backwards.  I havent tried any sort of 5.1 or 7.1 channel audio setups

  • K8n neo platinum .... numerous problems

Hey guys, bear with me im new here.
Ive spent the better part of an hour going through these forums trying to figure out what happened to my computer yesterday. The computer started up fine and I used it for most the day. But then when I was using it, all of a sudden it froze. I resetting and I had no power to my keyboard or mouse . I stopped messing with it and went to sleep. BTW I did try to turn off power, unplug and replug. It did not work either.
Today I tried again to make it work and still the mouse and keyboard dont work. I get to windows and I know it is connected to the internet b/c I can see the shared folder stuff (I know Windows didnt freeze on start-up). I assume from this that HD, RAM, and videocard are fine.
I switch the PS/2 mouse over to USB and still nothing. I try another USB mouse. Nothing, no power, no light on the optical mice. I then notice that the case fans are all working but the CPU fan is not working. I quickly turn the computer off (good thing it wasnt on for more than 10 minutes, idle).
    I have a:
    K8N Neo Platinum
    AMD Athlon 64 3200
    1GB Kingston RAM PC 3200
    ATI X800 XT Plat.
I can't access BIOS. The keyboard lights go on in the begining then turn but the keyboard doesnt recognize anything. The F-Lock works to turn the light on/off but nothing else.
I know from reading the posts that the USB/keyboard problems are very common with this mobo. I need seriuos help and will me monitoring this forum a lot today. Please post and ask questions as I will be happy to answer any.
    I belive my choices are:
    1. Reset BIOS which I am willing to do.
    2. Get new MB, which is a last resort.
    3. Hopefully there is another solution that evades me
    Humbly,
    sap

    okay,
So I reset the BIOS. I then connected a PS/2 mouse and PS/2 keyboard and monitor and tried to boot the comp. It stopped at the first screen which does the RAM test. It got all of my 1GB of RAM okay. It then tries to detect hard drives and cd roms. It gets them all too, (its not supposed to detect floppy, right?)
It says "CMOS checksum error, defaults loaded."
Then it says press F1 to continue or press DEL to enter BIOS
When I try either of those things, there is a slight beep from the motherboard speaker. The comp. just stays at that screen as the keyboard still does not work.
Before I reset CMOS, I could atleast get into Windows (although I couldnt do anything) now I cant get to windows at all. I hope I am not regressing.

  • K8N Neo Platinum nf3 250Gb SATA RAID question?

Hi all I'm ready to make the move to an AMD A64 setup from my currnet P4.
You all know what a tough job it is to find the right motherboard for an A64
After much research I think the K8N Neo Platinum is the board for me, but there's one question I can't find an answer too. So I'm turning to this forum. Thanks much for any help.
I currently run a dual RAID"0" setup. Two WD360 Raptors as boot array off the Si3114 on-board controller and two WD740 Raptors as a game \ power apps storage array off the ICH5R southbridge.
My question is; Is it possible to run this drive setup off the K8N Neo Platinum's 4 SATA controllers? Two seperate RAID"0" arrays with one bootable.
    thank you-Mike

I decided to go with a S939 instead....I know me...and I'll want one as soon as I got the S754 up & running
I ordered a K8T NEO2-FIR...Its got the on-board Promise SATA RAID controller + on chip VIA RAID...so it should suit my drive needs perfectly

  • Installing sata raid problem, need help plz!!!!!!

i just bought 2 seagate 200G sata hd, and here coms the problem:
after create an array, the boot screen shows " strip 2+0, 400099m, functional", seems it works, then after "set up is inspecting your hardware configuration", i got
    a black screen for ever!!
even lucky to pass this step, boot to xp cd, hit F6 then insert the floppy, and install the 376/378 driver(tryed about 4 different driver), 3 line show on the blue screen" presse Enter to install windows xp, press R for recovery, press F3 to quit" hit Enter, another blue screen says "cant find hard drive, check the cable and power connecter.....", something like that, oh i am soooo pissed off :(.......
someone plz help, any suggests are welcome!!!
    btw, my system is:
    althonxp 2400+, k7n2 delta-ilsr, msi fx5200, 2 512mb infineon ddr333, powmax 480w psu,+5 38A,+12, 17A

looks like someone made their homework prior to posting
the amps on the psu is okay but you didnt supply 5v but that should not be a problem
    Quote
    strip 2+0, 400099m, functional.
    sounds wrong.
    never heard of 2+0.
do you got any harddrive connected to ide3 ?
if not then delete all arrays and then create 1 array.
    raid 0 for performance.
    raid 1 for security.
    size 16kb and try again.

  • P965 neo-f v2 install and boot problem

hi. i have problem vith my motherboard( p965 neo-f v2) i cant instal win7. always rebooting when instal. 3 days im trying to make this work. any help?

If it's rebooting randomly then it's most likely the RAM, data corruption or power supply issues.
It's never a good idea to mix RAM modules by the way. Try with just ONE stick in DIMM1 (slot closest to the CPU). Also, still check there's no problems with the RAM module with >>Memtest86<<.
Run diagnostic tests on the hard drive to check it's not the cause of the problem and try a different lead.
Another possibility is that your power supply is faulty. Try and borrow one of greater power (more amps on the +12v rail) and see if that changes anything.

  • Neo platinum having problems RAIDing

I just built a PC the other day
    athlon 64 3400+ (retail heatsink/fan)
    msi neo platinum
    2x512 corsair XMS pc3200
    2x250gb WD IDE
    2x250gb WD SATA
    2x37gb WD SATA Raptors
    radeon 9800 pro
antec 550w true control power supply
    lian li silver pc60
no OC'ing yet, just making sure everything works
i tried for hours to raid my raptors but couldn't get it to work
i enabled SATA RAID in the bios, then went into the raid array menu...
but when i f6 my windows XP install and load the drivers on the floppy, i get a weird error:
"File nvraid.sys caused an unexpected error (512) at line 2108 in d\xpclient\base\boot\setup\oemdisk.c
    Press any key to continue"
the RAID wouldn't work, so i installed XP (pro) without RAIDing, and it seems to work fine...do i need a BIOS update, is this faulty hardware? familiar territory for anyone?

OEM is manufacturer. disk is your XP cd. c??? is cab where file is suppose to be located.
Start with basics. Reboot, del to bios. Enable sata 1 and 2 channels (providing this is where your drvies are on). Then go the third bios setup page and make sure you have sata enabled there as well. Save and exit. Reboot! Then  go to your raid utility (F10) and then do your striping, mirror, etc. Then reboot. Put you cd in and run setup.
BTW, If you have your cd roms(s) and DVD(s) on any ide cable, put them on cable select and eneable them as raid drives also. It would be considered IDE raid.

  • Problems with 64 3200+ on MSI k8n neo platinum.

    AMD Athlon64 Newcastle 3200+ AX 2200MHz/2.2GHz 512kb Boxed (with cpu-cooler!) Socket754
    MSI K8N Neo Platinum nForce3 250Gb 3DDR-DIMM 5PCI SATA Raid Audio GB-LAN Firewire Socket754 ATX
    Kingston KVR400X64C3A/512 512Mb DDR PC3200 400MHz 184pin Unbuffered CL3
    Okey here it comes..
I installed everything and all seemed to work okey,  until i threw in the XP install cd and began my install..
in the dos install of windows xp, (when it moves files to the hdd) it stopped and said that there was a problem with a file that were to be copied, i pressed enter to try again and  the install moves on,  this accurs 4-5 times and then it gives me a BIG  "IRQL less or not equal".. Blue screen of death.. (it complains on different files each time i try to install xp, tried 15-20 times)
I have tried to change memory to another Kingston KVR400X64C3A/512 512Mb DDR PC3200 400MHz 184pin Unbuffered CL3 with no luck,
changed hdd, change gfx-card. change psu,  removed all no-need pci-cards..
but still same error, i aint no expert so i might have missed something in bios or something :(
please help me if you can..

Flashing bios with memory errors is a veeeeery bad idea .
Almost guarantied to ruin your bios chip with bad data block.
That this even is suggested with mem errors , well .
You need to resolve the mem errors before doing anything else.
The windows xp install routine is a very heavy user of cpu and memory
and will fail if you have mem errors like you have.
Some things to try is entering bios and change auto settings on cpu voltage
giving it 0.5v more than default .
Set the memorys voltage to vendors max approved voltage
    which for yours is 2.6v +/- 0.1v . So it's safe to set at 2.7v .
    Set timings to cas 3 ,ras 3 ,trp 3 , tras 8 , CMD 2T.
Pushing it firmly down in the dimm socket , sometimes it's not all the way down there even if the plastic lockers snap in.
Disconnect all devices not needed for a windows install ,things can be added later.
Have only the hd that os is to be installed to , one cdrom , floppy , memory and
    gfx card .
Disconnect USB case front connector (cause corruption and strange faults if
    USBOC pin is connected)

  • K8n neo platinum, RAID configuration and linux

Hi all, please be gentile to me becouse I dont understand much about technical issues of computers...
Here is my problem: I am using windows XP but today I decided install Suse Linux 10.0 32bits version also, but a warning came out saying something about I have RAID by software and if I install linux the data of the discs will be erased. I have a SATA2 80GB hitachi drive with Windows XP installed and a 2 partitioned drive 120 GB samsung sp1203n (IDE) with data in one partition and an empty one that I want do install linux in it. Can someone tell me how can I configure a RAID without losing any data so I can install Linux? I hardly know what a RAID is... lol
    Thanks in advance...

Does your RAID shown you HEALTHY?
The Raptor drive shows as healthy.

You may need to press F6 (using the NVIDIA raid driver for Win64 if you're using the RAID). As Win32 and Win 64 using different drivers.
This has crossed my mind and is definitely on my list of things to try if all else fails.

Have you enable the RAID Array as Bootable Drive in the Bios?
All RAID options are enabled. I didn't touch the BIOS prior to starting the process. The RAID array wasn't listed in the BIOS as a bootable device. In fact, it wasn't listed at all. It was after I discovered this I used F10 to see if it was detected there. The drive was listed, but it wasn't bootable. I then made it bootable. After exiting this section, the PC booted straight into Windows. On the occasions when Windows started, I didn't go into the BIOS to see what it shows.

But why you need to used the NFORCE3 instead of Nforce4 Drivers from the NVIDIA website?
Because it's an nForce 3 board. Or are you saying the nForce 4 should work fine?

    Gd luck.

  • K8n Neo Platinum MS-7030; freezes during OS install

I am an experienced builder, I have built dozens of systems and even trained people to build their own. I am also an experienced forum user (new to this board) I have searched extensively on this subject and tried every suggestion I have found. Alas I am still having a problem.
    My System is
    K8N NEO Platinum MS-7030 ver 1
    Athlon 64 300+ Newcastle
    CORSAIR ValueSelect 1GB (2 x 512MB) (PC 3200) VS1GBKIT400
    2xWestern Digital Caviar SE WD1600JD 160GB 7200 RPM Serial ATA150 Hard
    Pioneer  DVR-108
I built this system in November 2004, for my cousin and his family. It installed XP Sp2 and has never given the slightest hint of a problem.
My cousin bought a OEM version of x64 so we could finally make it into the 64-bit system it is intended to be. We backed up his files and formatted the hard drive, he also bought the second hard-drive so we can make it a raid-0 system.
I flashed the bios to 1.70 and all seemed well. Install keeps freezing. I tried to reinstall XP32 still freezes intermittently. I have tried all of the f6 driver installs, in 32 and 64 bit. I have tried PCI and AGP cards, I have tried one sided PC3200 memory. I tried an IDE hard-drive. I have even tried using my Power-man 450 watt server PS that has been running my Dual athlon server for three years. I have tried enabling and disabling every bios setting available, I have tried underclocking the memory and dis-abling cache in the bios. Currently the board is on the table, with one stick of memory, the processor, and an old creative PCI graphics card with a seagate 20gb IDE hardrive, it still freezes. I have tried raisng and lowering voltage for the CPU and memory. I have even back tracked to the original bios, and tried every bios in between, setting and resetting every option in bios, with each, I have made dozens of attempts, and read hundreds of posts here, including Raid tutorials and installing XP  tutorials. It won't even install XP32. Any other suggestions before I RMA?

Nice to hear it helped .
Flashing between different bios generations sometimes needs a full flash with bootbloack/dmi/and reset during/after flash (not only awflxxx biosrom and enter )
this because they are sometimes completly reworked .
I always use the full commandline option also with the /f switch and it's never given me probles switching between very old and very new versions .
Some don't like to reflash the bootblock though , but sometimes it should be , as it has changed trough some versions .
Same goes for winflash , always markes bootblock/dmi/update all/and cmos reset .
The nice thing about winflash is if the flash goes wrong it's just to kill it through taskmanager and try over until you get a successfull flash .
As long as you don't shut down or restart your computer it's working even with the mainblock erased .
Experienced this myself today , when trying 1.9b6mod for neo2 .
Mainblock was erased and new programming stopped at 22% .
So i downloaded from internet another winflash version (1.0.0.1) and was able to reprogram back to 1.8R2mod by tictac .
For the 64bits I had the same problems while testing/running it with the beta version back in january (not tried XP64 with the newest retail version and newest nvidia xp64 drivers) .
It installed fine on single drive but bsod'ed with raid-0 .
Try making a new custom floppy with the latest nv-ide/nv-raid drivers on it , and
recreate the array with "clear disk data" and the option to set as bootable .
Have the sata ports set at "sata dma enabled" in bios .
It's also different depending on which sata ports you are using .
Sata port 1/2 is connected to the nv-chipset though the chip-link to the marvell extrenal PHY for the drives
and port 3/4 use the internal integrated nvidia PHY .
So you can have different results depending on if you create the array on port 1/2 or port 3/4 .

  • The same old problem with temperatures (K8N Neo Platinum)

I have problems since bios v1.0 on my K8N Neo Platinum with temeparutes.
I have installed a Prometeia Mach II St colling unit
I Tested the v1.0 official bios, the temperature was allways -65º full ou idle, what it is impossivel.
In the moment i flashed the bios to v1.2b5, temperature changed to 49º, and I did not move in nothing. The same temperature appears in all bios since v1.2b5. Now I have the v1.4b2 bios
    Sorry the Bad English

Here are the instructions to reflash the BIOS for your K8 Neo. I am currently running ver.1.4 with little problems. My only snafu is the LED for my optical mouse stays lit even when system is off, however I have no RAID, Ethernet, onboard sound, or SATA drives. I have just a simple basic system, and I don't overclock. My board is the K8 Neo Platinum socket 754, with an AMD64 3000+. YOU MUST HAVE A FLOPPY DRIVE CONNECTED TO SYSTEM FOR THESE INSTRUCTIONS TO WORK!.
Flashing BIOS on K8 Neo per MSI. READ ALL instructions before starting.
1.Check your BIOS for flashing protection and disable it.
    2. Know your board model#. a. Open case and find model# on the board between the PCI slots, or b., boot system and at first DOS screen you will see 'W7030ver1.4122101'. This means you have a MSI model 7030 motherboard with BIOS version 1.4 issued on 12/21/01.
3.Download the Bios that matches your motherboard model and version#.(I believe the Neo Plat had two versions, 1.0 and 1.1). I have 1.0. It will be found between the PCI slots. Create a folder on C: drive labeled 'C:\TEST'
4.EXtract the BIOS file to C:\TEST folder.
5.Create a boot floppy. For XP, at Desktop double click My Computer, right click floppy drive, click Format to format the disk, then click 'Create MS-DOS Boot Disk'.
    6. Set boot order to floppy. Hit F11 to select boot device.
    7. Insert boot floppy and restart system.
    8. At A:\ prompt type in the following,
    C:\ (enter)
    cd\TEST(enter)
    awdfl833c(space)w7030nms.130
The w7030nms.130 is the BIOS file name you downloaded to C:\TEST. Keep in mind you're dealing with DOS file names, so you may need to open a DOS window in Windows, and search C drive for the TEST folder and write down the DOS file name of the BIOS file BEFORE you start the BIOS update.
    9. Reboot when prompted. It shouldn't take more than 10 seconds to update the BIOS.
