Neo2-F/A64 3000+/Zalman showing 40C at idle in BIOS v1.9!!

My Neo2-F w/ A64 3000+ Venice arrived last night, along with some other parts (will list full specs below).  The BIOS version that it came with out-of-box is 1.9.
When I go to System Health in BIOS, it shows my CPU temp as ~40 degrees C!!  I don't think this is normal for a 3000+ that is not being overclocked, especially at idle.
I even went so far as to get a Zalman 7000AlCu for it, and used Arctic Silver 5 (I followed the instructions for application on their website (put a beebee sized drop in the center of CPU, and lower heatsink straight down, then screw in bolts).
I have to admit, I did mess up the first application of AS5 ... well, not the application itself, but it was my first time working with a Zalman.  So, when I tried to fasten the first bolt just a little bit as directed, the other side came popping up (too much leverage and I wasn't holding it firmly enough).  I have heard that this can cause air to introduced into the AS5 compound, so I pulled the HSF out and cleaned both surfaces thorougly with alcohol ... cleaned each surface multiple times, even after I could see no more AS5 residue coming off.
I am aware that this mistake compromised the efficiency of this setup a bit, but shouldn't the temps for a 3000+ be closer to 30 degrees C at idle, especially with AS5?
Perhaps it's just BIOS v1.9 that is returning incorrect temperature values?  What windows program can I use to check temps?

My new 7000AlCu & AS5 is in a drawer...dont need them.
Try touching the very base of the hsf, closest to the cpu core as you can reach. BEFORE YOU DO IT, ground yourself by touching grounded metal objects.
Gives a clear indication if it's acceptable cool enough for YOU. I've had Abit AV8 mobo showing ~45C idle, next mobo was Asus A8V, showed pleasant 33C..current shows 27 and it's overclocked to 2,5GHz
I guess all temp readings are REAL CALCULATIONS, there is no real temp reader built-in...a BIOS matter.
Other things that add heat: RAM at high freq and voltage... SATA HDD's generate LOTS heat...bro's hdd got errors due to overheating, he didnt use fans blowing over the HDD...all that warm air makes cpu/case warmer ofcourse. You gotta have airflow in your chasse.
When/if you re-attach your HSF again, take a close look at the paste stuck on the hsf. I had "clear" spots (no contact between cpu core & hsf...paste doing no good) on ~40% of the core area....also I never trust AS5 again (or the boxed paste)...
Use Zalman's + some AS5: The two first times I re-mounted the hsfs (boxed and 7000AlCu) they were STUCK very hard to the core. Happened with alcu@as5 and boxed@boxed paste + boxed@as5. I've read "many" ppl ripping their cpu off the socket when trying to pull the hsf off...it got glued..solution=do it with warm pc).

    a64 3000+ -> can hit 9x300 easly.

    if i run 100 or 200 divider all i ok, but when i put 133 or 166 divider i can't but pass ~250 htt whatever

    i don't use air cooling but water.
    Problem is that i can hit 9x300 but with 1:2 divider , so my memory run FSB 150 ... and as far i know tihs is problem
    with neo2 (divider 200 and 100 is full stable)
    i'm asking why this Mobo has problem with Divider and vx or bh-5 memory , perhaps someone can answer...

    Hello everyone. Just wondering if anyone can help me. I have hit a brick wall with my overclock but I hope I can push it a little bit further, since other people have started to have more success.
    So far I have managed 230HT 1:1 thus reaching 2.3Ghz with my A64 3000 @ 1.6v. My ram is rated to run at 250HT max of 1.9v - so I hope I can go further.
    My spec is:
    MSI K8N Neo Platinum
    BIOS 1.25Beta
    Athlon 64 3000 Newcastle
    1gig GeIL PC4000 Ram
    ATI Radeon 9800 XT
    I have shifted thru a lot of the threads on this forum but lack any kind of solid evidence or solutions. Also, I'm unsure as to what bios I should use. I have never had a temperature problem with my board so I'm looking for overclock stability only. I know it's a lot of trial and error, overclocking I mean, but any help would be appreciated!

    Is there anything more to do except this three options , like changing the HT Frequency which is already by default at 4x ? Or changing the RAM Clock or something like that ?
    And if nothing more to do, is it necessary to change the MSI heatsink or install a Fan on the nVidia Chip instead of the MSI heatsink already installed ?
    I am sorry that I ask all that , because I am ever afraid to burn any piece of my PC , and this is why I am asking you because you made it already without problem specially that you have the same CPU as mine , but the different is the Grafik Card .

    I followed that 'How-To' when I did the transfer and watched iTunes process the backup, it also showed the 'Last Backup' date correctly at the bottom of the iTunes Summary screen. I did a restore from backup to my new iPad and on checking the iPad 4 it seemed that the transfer process duly transferred my books, documents, apps etc but did not transfer my photos and videos (they are all clicked to be included in the sync).
    I have now clicked on each video title in iTunes and it tells me that it cannot locate any of the videos!
    It seems for some bizarre reason that the transfer process has transferred some of the content of my iPad 1 and deleted other content - I don't get it!
    I also have the same content (videos and photos) on my iPhone 4 and have connected that to iTunes, whereby it immediately did a backup and sync, however I still get iTunes telling me that it cannot locate the videos ... it's as though the backup that was taken does not exist - or does 'backup' not mean 'backup'?.

    can some one give me there settings in bios so i can try them out, i want to try something moddest, im aiming for 2.2ghz maybe 2.4,
    I really want to learn how to overclock but reading these guides are really confusing me, there seems to be a formula or ratio to how you overclock,
    but im not getting it, its like a math formula isnt it? its freezing up my brain
    can some one break down how the ratio or formula is done in order to get the desired overclock?
    i understand that all setups will vary even if they are similar and my results will derive from my particular hardware.
    i also understand the best way to know what your particular setup can handle is by testing the different settings at a time using programs such as cpuz, memtest and prime95..
    any one mind helping me out? i chose this cpu for the sole purpose of overclocking it even though iv never even read about how to do it      anyway thanks in advance.
     

    The A64 boards only allow a few ratios, but lowering the memory speed to have tighter timings usually yields beter overall performance....
    Value RAM usually has problems at the HTT's these A64 boards and CPU's can run at, but the "better" memory on the "right" board, can do cas2.5 at 300HTT....!
    The typical ratios the 64 Bit BIOS allow are:
    200 = 1:1 ratio with HTT and memory clock, so when HTT is 250 the memory clock will be 250
    166 = 5:6 ratio, so when HTT is 250 the memory will be 208
    133 = 2:3 ratio, so when HTT is 250 the memory will be 166
    100 = 1:2 ratio, so when HTT is 250 the memory will be 125
    Auto = I'm 80% sure that Auto = 1:1 ratio too
    Some boards express these ratios in percent...

  • Overclocking A64 3000+

    Hey guys,
    I got a n00b question about overclocking the A64 3000+.  Should I even think about doing this with the standard HSF?  I'm planning to use this machine for 2 years -- will overclocking destroy my machine before 2 years is up?
    I can't be sure about my CPU temperatures right now coz I'm not 100% sure the K8N Neo Platinum temperature issues have been finalized yet, but under load, my HSF does not appear to be very hot...

    With standard HSF I wouldn't go more than 10% OC to be sure that the system will last... anyway 2200 MHz is not that bad after all

    I get around 650 to 680 cpu mark score with my system:
    MSI Neo Plat
    1Gig of PC3200 KINGSTON Ram
    A64 3000+ @ 2ghz
    Leadtek 6800
    I've updated the latest nforce drivers from MSI and the bios is 1.2
    I think it's way to low since I had 300 cpu mark score with my lousy Athlon 1.4Ghz thunderbird.
    I see that other a64 3000+ users get around 800 to 950 cpu mark score. Why is mine too low? Bios settings? What should I check?
    I see even a MSI Kt800 user with 840 cpu score!

    Could you please post a link for the software benchmark that you are referring to?  I can't seem to find the right one.  I got something called CPUMark but it is scoring mine at like 3400 which isn't in the correct range based on what you've said so it's probably a different software.  Thanks for your help.  I just want to see where mine falls out.

    Well finally after a few months of waiting ive got rid of my stock A64 cooler and had chance to fiidle with some overclocking i really would like some advise on my recent overclcock perhaps some of you guys know where i might be able to tweak my system alittle bit here's the details

    so far i have reached this
    FSB 235 x 10 @ 1.65v mem @ 2.5,3,3,10 @ 1.70v
    temps are around 39
    3DMark 2001 = 23766
    3DMark 2003 = Havent try'd yet :p
    So are my mem timings good ive try'd higher FSB but couldn't seem to get it without upping my volts,  im thinking that it might be my memory settings holding me back but not really sure

    Second double sided dimm in the 7030's seem to really give it headaches.  WILL NOT run @ 1:1 no matter what I do.  Automatically defaults it to 166 divider no matter what slots or bios settings I try.  I managed to get them to run @ 200 by OC'ing to 240fsb but even then I had to use way worse timings than they would do by themselves.  OCZ is the only manufacturer I have found that makes a 1 Gig stick that runs at the same timings as their 512 Mb sticks.  When I get one of those babies I'll really be able to see what this thing will do @ 1:1.  Probaly only get to 220 or so with pc3200 but doing it @ 1:1 with good timings will be sweet!

    Does anybody know if this combination will work - K8N Neo2 + AMD 64 3000 (939)? MSI website didn't mention anything about support for the new AMD 64 3000 (939) but AMD website does mention that the K8N Neo2 can be used.

    I'm not saying yours won't be good and fast in 2 years..  I'm saying a socket 939 will give you the option of NOT upgrading EVERYTHING *at a later point than the 754*.    the 3000 is suited perfectly to the Neo2,   and so is an FX 53..      were talking about spending $20 extra to go with a more upgradable platform.
    btw -the computer I'm typing on right now I built in 1999,    it's a Socket A KT7A-RIAD which I initially put an athlon 900 (then unlocked and overclocked @140 mhz bus),     then I upgraded to an Athlon XP 1800 when they were affordable.  upped my ram to 768 megs,  The most recent upgrade I made is an ASUS RADEON 9600 XT.      
    I can play the most graphic intensive games EG counterstrike sourse beta (half life 2),   far cry,  whatever I want at decent resolutions on a computer I build over 5 years ago...  and did it without buying a whole new computer every 2 years.  
    the only reason I'm upgrading now is for decoding HDTV... other than that "mixing and matching" suits me just fine...  it's part of the hobby..  not everyone can just go (or just wants to) buy a whole new computer every 2 years..  I like to tweak and overclock to keep my computer current as long as I can..  not to compare numbers with the rich kids..

  • A64 3000+ OC success

    Hello all.
    I finally succesfully built my first computer... after i had to RMA my first Neo2... I felt like i'd never be able to get any of those nice results everyone was getting...
    Last night i overclocked my 3000+ (1.8ghz) to 2.4 ghz and ran prime95 all night (over 8 hours) with not a single error or warning. I have to say it these little chips rock. My cheap memory is at 220mhz right now at 3-3-11  1T. Temps are low around 36-42... I am a happy camper.
    The only thing that is dissappointing right now is that my vidcard is only running at 4X instead of 8X. But i think that doesnt give much performance difference... If i put it on 8x i get vpu recoveries as soon as i start a game... Anyone has any ideas what could be faulty... my mobo or my vidcard?
    I tried all the combinations on bios to make it work for 8x but it just doesnt seem to like it...
    My old coumputer i had my vidcard only running at 4x for about a year... because that was the max for my old mobo... so could that affect on this?

    1 - 67 locks AGP freq
    2 - install GART, it's part of the mobo S/W. Get the unified driver set for the Nforce 3 here- http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp. Just install it all.
    3 - Straightforward
    4 - Nope. But you can after the mobo drivers if you want. I'd do it just to cover all your bases... You might benefit from doing a complete uninstall of the ATI driver w/ Driver Cleaner (google for it - I forget the link). It will get rid of all traces of the old ATI install, so you can start fresh.
    Change to 8x in BIOS would prob work best.

    I am not sure if it will fit.  In any case, as far as I know the CNPS77000 Cu only has a 3-Pin FAN-Connector.  The problem here is that the P35 Neo2-FIR (and all recent MSI Boards) have a 4-Pin CPU Fan Header.  If you want to take advantage of the automatic CPU FAN regulation feature of the board, you need a CPU Cooler that has a 4-Pin FAN Connector.
    Users have reported that the following CPU Coolers should fit for sure:

  • P35 Neo2-fr cannot unable to show IDE Dvd-rw in XP

    Hi guys, i have 2 SATA hdd, 1 Sata DVD-rw and 1 IDE dvd-rw drives.
    With P35 NEo2-fr, everything is detected except the IDE dvd-rw drive. Both Master and Slave mode are tried, still it was of no use.

    Also ensure data{in properly direction} and power cable are connected.

    I use a zalman copper cooler, the really big round thing lol
    Temps never go above 45... so I'm assuming 1.7 is ok? Or can it fry regardless of temperature?

    heatsinked, or anyone who knows, I tried to go to 240 for my CPU but the Windows then didn't start then restarted my PC.. After that I got error message that windows can't start because a File is missing , anyway I entered the Windows but I went back to 230x10 ...
    Now anyone knows why this happened ? Does my ram not allow me to go further ? Or is there something else stops me to go to 240 ?
    How could my settings in Bios be ? Settings of CPU and Ram and anything else I need to do to get to that 240 ?

    I know there are countless threads on this subject, but I'm gonna post this anyway, lol.
    I have an Athlon 64 3000+ on MSI K8N Neo Platinum (BIOS 1.1).  I have 2x512 Mushkin Level One pc3500 in DIMMs 1 and 2.  I'd like to achieve an overclock of 2.3-2.4 if possible.  Right now the best I can get is about 2.2 but I haven't tweaked much.
    Several questions:
    should I set 1T or 2T
    should I enable or disable Spread Spectrum
    Should I change AGP frequency
    what do you recommend for CPU voltage? I have a Thermaltake Venus 12 hsf
    does lowering Hyper transport from 4x to 3x negate the effects of overclocking?
    Any other advice would be helpful, as well.

    1t will yield better performance.  2t might possibly give you a slightly better overclock.  Most people say it isnt worth the performance drop.
    Disable Spread spectrum
    Set AGP to 67
    CPU Voltage could be set at 1.65v safely i've heard.  I dont think I would set it higher than 1.6v but i'm on stock cooling right now.
    lowering hypertransport from 4x to 3x shouldnt be so bad... usually you wont have to until youre approaching about 240 HTT Frequency
    I might suggest updating your bios to one of the later ones and maybe a beta one.  That is if you want to achieve high HTT frequencies.  ie greater than 230ish.

Maybe you are looking for
