Neo2: many winxp install problems, but is this my solution?

Well I have just assembled the parts shown in my sig, except without the western digital HDD. I have only the single SATA drive connected.
I have run into some problems installing windows xp pro. I get a NTLDR message, or if I manage to get into setup from floppy boot disks I run into a problem with my sp2.cab file (i'm using a burned slipstreamed copy of win xp). But I have used this same disc to do clean installs on another machine that already had winxp on it.
But... I also downloaded the WinXP 64 bit edition Trial and used this to install and it worked perfectly. But i really dont want to use a beta release of windows.  I only installed it to see if i can get some sort of windows OS copy on to the computer.
What i want to know is,  does the fact that the winxp 64 install CD worked, confirm that my winxp sliptreamed CD is bad? (even though the CD was tested to work on different systems)
Should I try other things like adjust RAM timings, use 1 stick of RAM, set up a single drive in RAID array?
Thanks
Thanks

You may want to try using the ide hard drive to install windows to see if it is indeed a problem with your cd (I am assuming that you have the proper/latest drivers for your SATA controller). If it works your SATA hard drive or SATA on the mother board may be bad.
Good luck

Since updating to OS5 I cannot open downloaded podcasts and can't confirm if they have actually been downloaded. They appear in the "more" list in iTunes music, but won't play. I hear others have this problem but what is the solution ?

    Install the Flex:Player App;  http://itunes.apple.com/app/flex-player/id451024857?alreadyRedirected=1&mt=8
Then you can open the movies, keep tapping on them and choose Open in Flex:Player.

  • WinXP install problem (solved!), RAM problem (solved!)

Hello, this is my first post on this forum.
Yesterday I bought a MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum mainboard along with an Athlon 64 3000+ Winchester.
The first problem I had was with Dual DDR. I have two sticks of double sided 512MB Kingston Value PC3200 DDR, one has Infineon chips, other has ELPIDA chips. I put them in DIMM1 & DIMM2, but the pc refused to give any display on screen, the Bracket2 showed some kind of memory error.
So I removed one stick and put in DIMM3, changing to single channel mode.
(I also tried with 2 sticks of 512MB TwinMOS PC3200 with mtech chips, no display in dual DDR mode.)
After that the machine worked. I put the XP CD and formatted using NTFS. While XP was copying the first set of files to the disk, I got random file errors, telling me that the files in the harddisk are not in correct format.
Some time later I managed to install the files without any errors, but after the first reboot, I get a "Error loading operating system" or "Missing operating system" error. I tried everything I could find on this forum, from BIOS settings to removing 1 mem stick from the mobo, fixmbr, removed other drives etc. I also updated the BIOS to 1.4.
I spent 2 days trying to install Windows XP, but I can't seem to manage it.
I have a 200GB Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 Plus PATA drive, which used to work with my old nForce2 Ultra mobo.
I checked the device table at system startup, it shows the drive as LRG, ATA 100, 200GB. My other drive is shown as LBA, ATA 100, 80GB. Would this LRG - LBA difference cause any problems?
The weirdest thing is, I have an older 20GB Quantum disk, I first tried using NTFS on it, I got the same boot errors, then I created a 4GB partition and formatted it using FAT32. Windows installed with no problems and right now I'm writing this message from the FAT32 formatted PC.
To sum my problem, I can't use Dual DDR and I wanted to know if this is a common problem (black screen). And I can't install Windows XP on my NTFS formatted drives ("missing operating system", "error loading operating system").
I'm really not used to have so many problems related to motherboards.

    hi Tyrant,
welcome to forum , don't usually help tyrant's but wth
    1)Quote
I get a "Error loading operating system" or "Missing operating system" error
    - usually occurs when there's a non os hd in front of the system disk in the boot sequence. The default order of drive recognition is ide , sata. The bios offers a way to customise this in Advanced Bios Settings - HD Boot Order -
In this screen you should see all your Hard drives. the drive you want to boot from should be moved to the top of this list, select the drive & move it using the page up/down keys.
    2) what hdrives did you have plugged in when you installed windows originnaly
if you choose a hard drive that is lower down the drive sequence windows will install to the selected drive but will write the boot sector to the 1st drive. you can usually tell if this happens as your windows drive won't be C;\ . Best way round this is to disconnect any drives in front of the one you want unytil after windows is installed. then re-connecting.
You can check wether this is gioing to happen, with all drives connected, by entering bios Standard bios features and checking the disk order, disconnect any drives b4 the 1 you want the os on.
    3) You can download & run Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool this is a diagnostic tool that you can ,install on a floppy or cd , it will test your memory & report any errors. More info is on web site. Memory errors could have caused some of your problems. it's best to check a module at a time in slot 1.
if error free run test with both modules slot 1 & 2.
Dual channel will also not run well if the pair of modules used have different timings on the spd memory chips. download Everest, it's a good utility but specically can help provide details of your mamory. with all dram settings on auto check the Memory chipset tab to see your memory timings on auto these are from the SPD so you can identify any differences. put 1 module at a time in slot1 to get the data for your modules.
If you do find different timings manually change the dram settings in bios to that of the slowest module. This may enable you to run dual channel in slots 1& 2,
Most pps with your mobo have stability probs trying to run 2 modules in slots 1 & 3
    4) With these mobos the forum has found that a 12v supply of 24Amps is needed to ensure good stability Basic Building Tips    Quote
Typically we have noted many issues based on stability with PSU's being rated at less than 24A on the 12v rail.
Your zalman as far as i can see on the website only gives 18amps, again this can give stability issues.
    5) NTFS & XP go together like a horse & cart. when installing xp its best to get a coffee & not take the quick format option as the quick format will not isolate or correct any disk errors. Again these errors may be as aresult of memory, disk order power or any combination of the 3.
    hope this helps

  • P35 Neo2-FR OS Install Problem

Ok this is gonna be long so bear with me...
I recently purchased a new board, CPU and RAM for a long overdue upgrade. I installed all the components and the machine booted up fine, other than the dreaded dual boot. The problem I am having is a freeze or reboot during OS install. At first it was freezing during copy of system files, usually at the same spot of around 47%, but I have seen it all over the place. It won't let me do a regular format of disk without freeze or reboot, only a quick. After many tries and 3 different Win Pro disks, the other 2 with SP2 instead of 3, I have gotten as far as the 2nd copy of files in the XP GUI. Now I have tried to install IDE to IDE, SATA to IDE, IDE to SATA and SATA to SATA. One of either sticks of RAM in all slots. Purchased new PSU thinking that my old one wasn't powerful enough. Reseated CPU and cooler, added extra thermal grease. Reset BIOS settings to default. Cleared CMOS. I even tried installing Vista and Ubuntu just for kicks and got notta. The reboot comes out of nowhere and I have even had the thing freeze on me in BIOS once. I figured before I packed up the new items for RMA to Newegg I would ask here, after many searches, to see if anyone had any input.
    Rig is as follows-
    MSI P35 Neo2-FR LGA 775 Intel P35 ATX Intel Motherboardwith 1.8 Bios
    Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Kentsfield 2.4GHz LGA 775 Quad-Core Processor
    G Skill 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory
    SAPPHIRE 100162L Radeon X1300XT 256MB 128-bit GDDR2 PCI Express x16
    Ultra LSP 650 Pro +12v=38A 650 watts

I am trying with only one HDD and a CD-ROM.
I've been trying with one of each of the two sticks of RAM in ever slot. Just got done trying with different voltage on RAM and also tried different voltage on the CPU, no luck. Either freezes or reboots.

I have been charged for the OS X but don't have it installed.  About this Mac tells me I am still running Snow Leopard and when I go into the App Store it says installed and I can't reinstall it.  I have reloaded Snow Leopard and then went to the App Store and it still told me I had Lion installed.  What is going on?  Is Apple ripping its loyal customers off?

  • Macbook Core 2 duo -  lion install problems.

I picked up a used white Macbook Core 2 Duo (2007) recently.  The person I purchased it from installed a new 60GB SSD drive and 4GB of ram and put Lion on the machine.   The computer booted fine for the first 4 times, and then on the 5th time it said "Installing OS X" and then said there was an problem with the install????    The computer was working fine before all this happened.  Now it won't boot.... BTW I did not do any any updates.
We removed and tested the SSD drive... it appears to be fine.
My other problem is that the person who sold the computer to me did not give me original OS disk... is it possible that the OS he used is corrupted?  But then, why would it work fine and then give me the error message after the 5th boot?
Is the problem because I am using an SSD? ... but still makes no sence considering it was running fine before the 5th boot!
Please help, I am looking at purchasing my own copy of Lion and installing it but will this work without having the original Disks?
    Thanks!
(P.S.  When it did work, the Macbook with the SSD and Lion ran dramatically faster than my 2009 15" Macbook Pro.!)

Thanks everyone for their help... it was another bad disk!
I returned the OCZ HD and replaced it with an Intel SSD... The thing has been running spectacular now!  It out performs my Macbook Pro (speed)!
    FYI.
I did some digging and on the OCZ forums there has been A LOT of similar complaints regarding the HD failing in the same way mine did... when I took it back for a refund to the store I purchased it from, the tech said that they have been getting a lot of returns on that specific manufactures SSD's... and not just the entry level ones.
    Thanks again!

  • A different iTunes windows install problem: "validation"

am posting this for a friend of mine who has been using iT on his windows laptop for years.
He was trying to install the latest iTunes, and he downloaded it okay. When it started installing, he gets as far as the step "validating" and then it just stops - no error message or anything.
any clues? I see other folks have been having Windows iT install problems, but not exactly this one (there was no error message number).
(He's using a pre-vista version of Windows - could it be that the newest iT is only supposed to work with vista? I know nothing about windows.)

    Just a few quick thoughts.
    1. The newest iTunes does not work with Windows 2000.
    2. Some problems have been due to a display setting. To see everything the display setting (Changed through the Control Panel and/or Display) should be 1024 x 768.
    3. What specific error messages is he seeing?

When you get Pages 09 and Keynote back, Apples continues to want to update the 09 system. So it stays updated. I have had to turn off my auto updating that was nice but I'll do it one at a time in order to keep the Pages 09 and Keynote. When something works don't mess with it. Any fixes out there?

I can't say that I have had a problem playing videos in Flash because I could always play them in browsers other than Firefox.
In Firefox Tools>options>Advanced Hardware acceleration is turned on.
I don't know if that is different that tuning it off and on in Flash or not, but for now it is a moot point.
As I stated in my previous message, after following all earlier suggestions/instructions nothing helped. But The latest one, someone suggested that maybe version 17 of Flash might be a stable version.
I made no other changes except to install it, a few days ago, and so far so good.
    Many thanks for your help,

Go to Settings/General/Reset - Erase all content and settings. the connecto to iTunes and restore as a New phone. Do not restore any backup. If the problem persists you have a hardware problem. Take it to Apple for exchange.
This assumes that the phone is not hacked or jailbroken. If it is you will have to go elsewhere on the internet for help.

    (1) Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility installer file (msicuu2.exe) from the following Major Geeks page (use one of the links under the "DOWNLOAD LOCATIONS" thingy on the Major Geeks page):
    http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4459
    (2) Doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file and follow the prompts to install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. (If you're on a Windows Vista or Windows 7 system and you get a Code 800A0046 error message when doubleclicking the msicuu2.exe file, try instead right-clicking on the msicuu2.exe file and selecting "Run as administrator".)
    (3) In your Start menu click All Programs and then click Windows Install Clean Up. The Windows Installer CleanUp utility window appears, listing software that is currently installed on your computer.
    (4) In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any iTunes entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
    (5) Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try another iTunes install. Does it go through properly this time?

  • Tried to install iTunes 10.5 this morning but an error appeared saying "problem with windows installer package. A program required for this install to complete could not be run." Can someone please help

I tried to install iTunes 10.5 this morning but an error appeared saying "problem with windows installer package. A program required for this install to complete could not be run." Can someone please help

Firstly, are you installing iTunes for the first time or are you updating your current version of iTunes?
If you're installing iTunes for the first time have you tried redownloading the installer package? Perhaps the file you downloaded originally is corrupted...
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/
If you've tried that, then try installing iTunes as your computer's administrator. To do this right-click the install package and choose "Run as administrator".
If you're updating iTunes to the most recent version try repairing the Apple Software Update program on your computer. It's under the add/remove programs.
    1. Open the control panel
    2. Open Add/Remove programs (called "Programs and Features" in Windows 7)
    3. Navigate to "Apple Software Update" in the list and click on it
    4. Click on "Change" then select "Repair" (or just select the repair option in Windows 7)
Once you repair this, try running iTunes and the update again.
    Fingers crossed!
