Neo2 Platinum and AMD X2 ??

I am currently running an Athlon64 3500 in my Neo2 Platinum with
BIOS v1.4.
I want to upgrade my CPU to an Athlon 64 X2 3800 Dual-Core
Will i have to upgrade my BIOS ?
I`m running Windows XP Home. Can i easily flash the
BIOS using Live Update ?
I`ve done BIOS flashes before in the past with a floppy drive.
But now, i no longer have a floppy in my system.
I guess i could borrow one from someone if i really had too !!
I just downloaded and installed Live Update from the MSI web site.
How reliable is it to flash the BIOS with it ??

Noooo! Stop!
Live Update is the absolute best way to guarantee a BAD BIOS flash!
Download & install your BIOS file manually via floppy and flashing utiliy - it's the most reliable way
That being said... You will have to upgrade your BIOS and reinstall XP to make sure it uses both cores effectively. Sounds like a pain, but it's worth it.

  • MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum and Venice E6

    Hi!
I have just bought an MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum motherboard and an AMD Athlon64 3000+ processor with Venice E6 core (ADA3000DAA4BW).
Will this mobo boot with that processor? Or do i have to use a Winchester to flash the BIOS first? Personal experiences would be helpful!
    Andres.

Your new board probably came with the 1.9 bios. The new 7025v1B.zip bios (1B only a couple days old) I think is for some of the new X2 AMD Processors. The MSI link to Products/Mainboards/Neo2/Processor Compatibility is now setup to use the 7025v1B.zip bios. As I recall the previous Processor Compatibility Chart for 1.9 bios was OK for all the Venice cores (E6 or not). I think it is only some of the latest E6 bigger models are affected by the latest 1B bios. Maybe someone has the older 1.9 bios Processor Compatibility Chart.
You shouldn't need to use a Winchester, some X2 processors would be recognized as earlier X1 models until the newer bios was installed. I think you should be OK with the 1.9 bios. I have the San Diego 4000+ and my board, one month old, came with the 1.9 bios installed.

  • Reboot problem with MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum and 250 GB SATA HDD

I'm having a "reboot" problem with my MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum. After turning my system on it will run without any problems, until I reboot. After a reboot it will always hang after the initial windows-bootscreen. The HDD-light will remain on. If, instead of going into Windows XP SP2, I try to enter the BIOS after a reboot (DEL) the system will also hang (blank screen with blinking cursor).
It started doing this after I installed the Maxtor 250 GB SATA disk. Before, I didn't have problems rebooting. If I disconnect the Maxtor drive I can reboot and enter BIOS and Windows each and every time. Reconnecting the Maxtor 250 GB SATA drive will return the reboot problem. I always have to use the power swith to get a working system again. It's not enough to do a hard reset (this has the same effect as rebooting).
Here are the details of my system:
    MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum (BIOS 1.B)
    Athlon 64 3200+ (Winchester, 2 Ghz, 512 KB cache, stepping DH-D0)
    2 x Kingston KVR400X64C25/512, 512 MB, DDR, PC3200 (2,5-3-3-8 T1)
Asus Radeon AX800 Pro (256 MB)
    PSU Antec Sonata 380W
HDD Maxtor 80Gb ATA (6Y080P0, Pri Master)
    HDD Seagate 250Gb SATA (ST3200822AS)
HDD Maxtor 250Gb SATA (6V250F0 - jumpered in SATA150 mode, the mobo wouldn't work with the drive in SATA300-mode)
Aopen COM5232/AAH Pro CD-Writer ATA (Sec Master)
BenQ DW1640 DVD-Writer ATA (Sec Slave)
P.S. The NVidia IDE-drivers are NOT installed. System is not overclocked.

Thank you for all the replies. Upgrading to the latest Nvidia IDE-drivers did not fix my problem. Moving to other SATA-ports did not help either. Upgrading the mobo's BIOS is not really an option (I'm using one version before the most recent and there isn't anything in the fixlist of the latest BIOS).
Now I've contacted Maxtor for (hopefully) a new firmware.

  • MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum AND SATA2

i have  MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum motherboard with 3500+ cpu and WD 160 hard sata disk.
I 'd like to ask if my MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum motherboard support sata2 hard disk drives, in order to know which HD  to connect as a second HD drive, SATA or SATA 2 ??

It'll see SATA2 as regular SATA. You won't loose any speed either. There are no hard drives that actually benefit from SATA2 spec speeds. Well, maybe in isolated near theoretical benchmark cases one current model might be faster in SATA2 mode.
We just haven't got the technology yet.

  • Msi k8n neo2 platinum and corsair cmx512-3200LL

is anyone using the corsair cmx512-3200LL with the msi k8n neo2 platinum or any other motherboards? if so how well does that memory overclock for you?

LL used winbond CH-5 or BH-5 or Infineon B-5 depending on revision .
And everybody knows that it's hard to overclock winbond very far without excessive vdimm increase (2.9v - 3.4v).
Corsair XL use samsung TCCD and overclocks much easier when having a motherboard with a vdimm limit at 2.85v.
xms 4xxx also use samsung (TCCC or TCCD) and some versions use hynix D43/D5
so you can't directly compare xms3200LL with the others .

  • Few question above the k8n neo2 platinum and raid

    hi
i have for now intel 3.4ghz and asus p4c800dlux and 4 sata drives :
2x36giga wd 10000 raptors in raid 0 (connected to the on board promise sata controller)
2x200giga wd 7200 jd sata that (connected to on bard sata ports)
i order a athlon fx-55 and k8n neo2 platinum for a oc (a have 2x512 corsiar pc4000pro and hydro cool 200 ) and its look that its going to be problem
"SATA ports 1+2 will not maintain a lock and you can and will corrupt hard drives placed on these channels if you raise the HTT above 220mhz."
    http://www.madshrimps.be/?action=ge...890&articID=228
so im in a problem, if i wont to do nice oc (and i will) i need to leave sata ports 1 and 2 not connected and buy a sata-pci controller for my 2x200giga , im right ?
in that case i need to connect the raptors in raid 0 in the sata 3-4 prots (near the agp) but:
the raid on the noe2 is "NV RAID (Software)" it means that there is no a controller like promise and the cpu need to replace the controller work, so its doing a lower performance.

If you had 4 huge drives I would be more sympathetic. To me every board is a compromise, resulting in me having to abandon something I might have done previoulsy. In you case ditch the two 36gb drives, and slum it with the 200gb drives. Remember that "overclocking" is not a right. There will be many users oblivious of the SATA 1/2 overclocking problems running 4 sata drives in RAID without a problem.

    Hi,
Since your link does not work, don´t know which model you are referring to, but either way both models should do the job nicely for you.
    Truepower version 1 ( ATX 1.3 - 30amp single 12v rail with 20pin powerconnector )
    http://www.antec.com/us/productDetails.php?ProdID=20550
    Truepower version 2 ( ATX 2.x - 19+19amps dual 12v rails with 24/20 pin powerconnector )
    http://www.antec.com/uk/productDetails.php?ProdID=17551
High power case-fans, usually are best to connect directly to a PSU 4-pin molex and not to the MoBo 3-pin connectors, which sometimes could overload the motherboard electrical circuit and give bootproblems or worse.

  • MS-7025 MoBo (K8N Neo2 Platinum) and RAID 5

    Hi-
I would like to use this Motherboard to make a home data server with a terabyte or more of storage, and build a new gaming machine, which is its current use. . Will this MoBo support RAID 5? I think it uses the NForce 3 Ultra chipset, and the docs that I have read so far say that SOME MoBos with this chipset support RAID 5, and "some do not"-- it says to check with the vendor for the specific board.
If RAID 5 is not supported, could I get it by buying an add-on card?
Right now the board has 1 Gb of RAM.
Would a server benefit from more RAM than this (Say, another GB-- for 2 Gb total?)...  I'm thinking that, for a server, more than a Gb  of RAM may not improve performance, but I'm not sure.
    Thank You!
    Best,
    Walter.

I have looked again at my Neo2 (nf3) and Neo4 (nf4) but both show only:
    NV RAID (Software)
    • Support up to 4 SATA & 4 ATA133 Hard drives
    - RAID 0 or 1, 0+1, JBOD is supported
    - RAID function work w/ATA133 + SATA H/D
Don't see any reference to RAID 5. You could buy a SATA RAID 5 PCI card and use it, just disable all nVidia RAID in the BIOS, but I would look at the RAID 0+1 using 4 disks first. I would use a dedicated IDE boot disk for the OS.
What OS are you planning to use for the server?  Vista or Windows Server would need 2gb but XP should be okay with 1gb unless you plan to serve loads of music / video, as HD speed plus memory is more important than CPU speed/power.

  • Neo2 Platinum and X2 success stories?

Now that bios 1.9 official is out, I'd like to hear from anyone who is successfully running an X2 proc on a Neo2 Plat board. I currently have a Neo Plat (S754) and would like to upgrade to an X2. I have a 6800GT AGP so I'm not moving to a PCIe board yet, and all the other S939 AGP boards I've looked at have some kind of problems or downsides. However, I'm not upgrading unless I'm sure I'll have a stable system.
For those of you using an X2 on a Neo2 Plat, what kinds of problems have you run into? USB2 problems? Strange voltages or temperature readings? Is CnQ working properly?
    Thanks!

I think the Neo2 is requiring a somewhat overhauled BIOS, and it's creating a few SNAFU's. MSI / nVidia will eventually get it working.....
SAB, i see u got your x2 CPU.
how is it? does windows boot any faster?

  • MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum and seagate sata2 500Gb

    Hi all,
As per subject, when the drive is connected to my computer it does not get passed the boot screen as all it keeps on doing is rebooting its self,
i have checked all my bios settings and all is as it should be, also i would like to mention that i already have 3 other sata drives connected to this motherboard, of which 2 are, 160Gb Seagate hard drives, and 1, 30Gb Weston digital hard drive, and they work perfectly,
I have also tried unplugging all the drives and just trying the new one, and setting the jumper to limit to 1.5Gb/s but still all it does is reboot, do you think the drive is faulty?
    Thank you

Seems strange.  I have a Seagate sata2 500GB (ST3500630AS) hooked up to Sata port #1 on my K8N Neo2 and it works perfectly.  I have found it to be *very* intolerant of overclocks though.
What sata port are you connecting to?  And are you overclocking?
This could be the problem .....  SATA ports 1 & 2 on the nforce3 boards are NOT locked. I only use 3 & 4 plus set your AGP clock to 67 or 68 to be safe (this is supposed to lock the PCI bus but only seems to work on SATA 3&4). Of course, this won't be a problem if you are running at Safe Default settings.

  • MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum and Speedfan configuration

I'm hoping someone else with a similar K8N Neo2 setup can compare Speedfan notes with me. I'm trying to figure out what maps to what, here's my best guess. Let me know if your best guess differs.
    Temp1: System / Case temp
    Temp2: CPU
    Temp3: Northbridge
    Local Temp: CPU Socket sensor
Remote Temp: nvidia 6800 GT GPU sensor
    Fan1: Northbridge
    Fan2: CPU
    Fan3: no sensor
    PWM1: Fan1/Northbridge speed control
    PWM2: Fan2/CPU speed control
PWM3: Any ideas? I'm hoping this controls voltage for at least ONE of the fan headers on the motherboard, so I can control my case fans. If anyone knows, please fill me in.
    Thanks!
    Rich

C'mon people, doesn't anyone have more info about this subject? I have everything figured out but speed03 and or fan03. I can not seem to control my case fans, only my CPU and northbridge work. I have 2 of my case fans plugged into the mobo and are reading 2700rpms but I can't slow or speed them up no matter what I do. It would be nice to have the system fan controlled my case temps just like the CPU fan is
Is ther something in bios I have to enable or something?

  • MSI K8n Neo2 platinum and drivers chipset, 5.03 or 5.10?

    Hello,
    J reinstalled my K8n neo2 with XP SP2, A64X2 4200+, XFX 7600GT ....
On MSI website there is 5.03 drivers for this motherboard. There is no 5.03 on nVidia website drivers archive?
On nVidia website there are 5.10 and 5.11 drivers. j look here that 5.11 is not very stable.
So, what is the best: 5.03 or 5.10?
Excuse j write not very good english!
    Thank.

The 5.10 works fine - 5.11 has cause network problems for most people.  There are better (V4.79) IDE/SATA/RAID drivers available if you want to do your own mix: DL the 6.37 Beta from here http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=971 and replace the IDE subfolder in the C:\NVIDIA folder from unpacking the 5.10 nVidia driver pack with the IDE folder from the 6.37 Beta, then run the Setup.Exe in the 5.10 subfolder.  6.37 Beta was nVidia's early attempt at a unified nForce3/4 driver pack but they gave up the unified idea without ever publishing one.  There may even be better "mixes" available but this works for me and I've been running a RAID-1 with them for 2 years now with no faults.

  • These ATI cards 9500 Pro and 9700 Pro ok for MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum and winchester cpu? Compatible?

Looking at grabbing a used ATI 9500 Pro or used 9700 Pro AGP card for my MSI Neo2 Plat since I can't use my Matrox G400.
Any problems using either of the above cards? I don't play a huge amount of 3D games so I'm not going to grab a 9800 Pro or XT or 6600GT. A 9500 or 9700 Pro would allow me to play the newer games at reasonable resolutions. Just want to make sure they are compatible.
    thanx

Ok guys, thanx for the feedback. I missed the 9500 Pro sale, so maybe its for the better. If I'm going to try a bit of 3D gaming, I may aswell get a little bit better card. So here is my question for you folks:
For my MSI K8N Neo2 and AMD64 3000+ system, I want a card that will have good 2D output and good DVD playback. I want to try some 3D games, but don't want to have the minimum. I was looking at used 9500 Pro's and the 9600 XT but I've come across a used 9700 Pro and a 9800 Pro and 9800 Pro with r360 core (almost a 9800XT). So if I get a 9700 Pro, what will I be able to play smoothly at what settings and what will I be unable to play. Ultimately, I may play mostly on my projector at 858 x 484, so maybe the cards don't matter too much. If I don't play 3D games much after a while, I'll probably downgrade, but I want to give it a try. I can't afford a new 9800 Pro/XT or 6600GT.
Used cards I'm deciding between. Have to act fast.
9700 Pro $170 CAD or 9800Pro $210 CAD or 9800 with r360 core $230. Price differences between the cards is as you see there.
thanx in advance for any feedback,

  • Neo2 Platinum and X2 4800+ Wont POST

Alright, so I am have a really interesting problem that some of you may have possibly had or are having.  I just upgraded my FX-53 (Revision CG) to a X2 4800+ (Revision E6) and I am having a issues getting to board to post.  I just flashed my bios with the official v1.9 bios using the winflash utility, this caused no issues and my FX-53 works just fine with it.  My 4800+ will work under the following conditions:
Condition 1: I lay the heatsink (Zalman CNPS7000B-Cu LED) lightly on the cpu without fastening it down and it will post, boot-up, and run stable for about 80% of the time.
Condition 2: I fasten the heatsink down and remove one of my 512MB memory modules from the purple slot, it will post, boot-up, and run stable.
If I place both memory modules in the dual-channel configuration with the heatsink fastened down, the system will not post.  But thats not all, I also have tried another 4800+ (Revision E1) and a 4400+ (Revision E6) both of which would not even post with the heatsink unfastened/fastened, but they would both post, boot, and run stable with one of the memory modules removed from the purple slot.
The first thought that comes to mind is, bad memory?  I doubt it.  The memory run flawlessly with my FX-53 in all memory configurations.  Another thought, is the CPU socket bad?  This doesn't seem to make sense either, since my FX-53 runs well with it.  However when the heatsink is fastened down, it is obviously flexing the board slightly, why would that cause a dual-core CPU to not post but let the FX-53 post?
I have noticed a slight high-frequency sound possibly coming from the inductor coils on the board.  I speculate that the noise is coming from an increase in current--could this have to do with the board not wanting to post?
Any of you experts out there have any suggestions?  Thanks.

Powersupply, unless defective, should be adequate.
It is probably not a great idea to run the cpu with a loose heatsink.  Are you certain that there are no bent pins in your cpu?  (That business about pressing down on it makes me nervous as there are static electricity dangers, etc.)  Did you clear cmos properly and carefully (removing power cord, pressing start switch to discharge capcitors for 10 seconds, using jumper JBAT1 as described in manual, and then trying to boot again?  Take a look at other posts with similar sounding problems and follow the troubleshooting procedures described, such as removing all nonessentail hardware starting with clearing cmos carefully, booting only with cpu, gpu and one stick of ram, etc., to isolate the problem.
Also do you have and use a D Bracket, and if so, report what it shows.
Hopefully some more people with greater expertise than me will take interest in your problem, but the specs of your system are going to make that harder for you than most.

  • MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum and installing XP on WD 1TB Caviar Black SATA-II HDD...

I haven't flashed my BIOS ever. So some will be glad to hear that since I never needed to--but I think I might have to now.
My comp crashed (just made a very long story short  ), so I bought a new HDD and it's the one described in the title. It's "SATA-II" as the misnomer goes but when I installed windows on it things seemed to go just fine (at least it didn't give me any errors)--indicating the mobo didn't have any trouble allowing to install (if it has anything to do with the install in the first place). And that was without a jumper to make it go to 150 mb/s (the HDD was OEM and didn't come with one :()
When I went to booted up again after installing, I received the renowned "Error loading operating system" message.
So! I figure I need to update the BIOS so it can better interface with the new HDD. Is that a correct assumption or could my error be due to something else (like the jumper)?
    Thanks for any help!
EDIT: Forgot to mention that I already had/have a SATA-II drive (300 mb/s one) installed and working just fine, recognized by windows, before the crash...but it wasn't the boot drive...so maybe that makes a difference?
EDIT 2: I tried to use the BIOS util provided on these forums but I can't use it since I have no working install on the windows drive for my PC. I'll look on the other forum page for a way to make a USB BIOS flasher on an independent computer, but if you have the link for me, that'd be even better. If I find it soon, I'll edit this out. Thanks.
EDIT 3: Eh, so it looks like it just needed a good restart...everythings fine--no flashing needed. Woohoo!
