Neo2 Platinum won't restart in WinXP

I recently RMA'd a Neo2 Platinum board because the SATA3/4 ports were not being detected during the Windows XP Pro setup.  I received the board yesterday and the ports are now detected properly but I've encountered another perturbing problem.  I've discovered that the computer won't restart via software.  What I mean is after the NTFS format of the hard drive in Windows setup the computer is supposed to reboot on its own to proceed with the installation of the OS but in my case I have to physically press the restart button on my machine to continue with the install.  Windows XP will fully install on the hard drive however the operating system can only turn off the PC, it won't restart it.  It merely hangs.
I've tried reposition memory sticks, use a different IDE cable, another power supply, clearing the CMOS via the jumper, reverse updating the BIOS twice, and using the safe defaults in the BIOS but nothing has worked.   This isn't the first time I've put a computer together and I've built quite a few but this is one abnormality I've never before encountered.  I just hope this board doesn't have to be RMA'd yet again.
Thank you in advance for your help.

Bought myself a new motherboard, processor and memory and it just won't work!
Searched this forum for a solution, but  haven't found one yet.
Try to install Windows XP, but it just won't start.
I now get an error code 0x80040507.
Before that, it just rebooted again and again.
    My configuration:

Do I need a new PSU?? or is there another problem?

AMD recommends a PSU with atleast 24a on the 12v rail. This does not mean your PSU won't hack it, it just means that as a rule of thumb, it's not supposed to.
Could your PSU be the cause of your problem? Possibly! You have a lot of components drawing power from your PSU. It would be wise to buy a beefier PSU with 12v/5v/3.3v amps all in the 32+ range (see my PSU in my signature or the enermax 460/465w whisper II)).
The problem with not having a better PSU to work with is you could encounter an error, deem it as a result of something it's not, and think the PSU is good and something is bad when it's really the other way around. Moral to the story: get a new PSU.
I tried searching microsoft's knowledge base for your error and nothing turned up that had anything to do with windows installation errors. Are you sure you copied the error down correctly?
If so, the only recommendation I have for you is this. Try installing windows with minimal components installed (CPU, motherboard, videocard, single cdrom, single hard drive). Leave your SB Live! out. Leave your WinTV out. Leave your linksys card out. Leave your DVD-R from LG out. And if you are willing to conserve even more power. If you really want to conserve power, you can install windows with only one stick of ram installed.
Next thing you want to do is check to make sure the memory is not faulty. Start by putting only one stick of memory in slot one and testing it using memtest86+ (i hope that link is correct). You're going to want to run a 1-4 hour standard loop of tests followed by a 12-24 hour loop of test 5. Then you will do the same thing with stick two in slot one. After this works, test to make sure there's nothing wrong with the motherboard by doing the exact same tests again one by one with the sticks in slot two this time around. After this is all done, do the tests again with both sticks in slots one and two. if it doesn't work like this, you could have faulty memory (but this should work). You can always run your memory in the same colored slots (single channel (slots one and three)) but this will cause you to take a hit in performance. Generally, for all instensive purposes, you should be able to run it in dual channel mode without any problems. I imagine you will be able to if the sticks are good.
If they don't work in dual channel mode, to be completely honest, I don't know what you would consider the problem then... could be the PSU... could be a badly matched pair... could be the motherboard. All this is determined by how you handled the parts when installing them. There are a lot of unknowns when trying to help a user without knowing anything about their install.
If all memtests' run successfully, you are now ready to install windows. If windows doesn't install correctly, you probably have a botched BIOS setting somewhere (like aggressive memory timings) or something similiar that's stopping you from successfully installing windows.
    Buy a new PSU

  • K8N Neo2 Plat won't switch on

    My K8N Neo2 Platinum won't boot anymore
I originally thorugh the problem was that the power supply had died, but I've just bought a new case with an ANTEC power supply and it still won't turn on. I've tried:
    - disconnecting everything that's connected to the board except for the RAM and the CPU
    - removing the battery
    - clearing the BIOS using the jumper
Does anyone else have any suggestions? I'm desperate here and getting behind on my work

My 1st Neo 2 I had the same issue and I tried everthing including new PSU (@600) and no joy  . I returned and got another one, it worked for a few hours then died killing a new PSU also  . So I returned it and got a 3rd Neo 2, it worked great for a week or so then it started "NOT" assigning IRQs to anything in the PCI slots for some crazy reason so I have RMA'd it back to MSI    Now get this I was not OCing anything   oh well if MSI can't fix it then DFI's new NF3 ultra MB will be getting shipped to my house quick   It's been a week and no word from MSI oh well

  • Neo2 Platinum - WinXP Pro sp2 won't restart, replaced Athlon64 with Athlon64-2

I did a cpu chip replacement of my Athlon xp 3200+ with an Athlon xp-2 3800.  ($78 form NewEgg).  My windows xp pro, sp2 found the chip so no new install.  I used the AMD drivers for multichip and the WindowsXP-KB896256-v4-x86-ENU.exe to update my os.
Now, my pc won't do a restart.  It closes widows but then stops without going to the bios post screen and restarting.  I have to do a shutdown to off and then push my on button to get back to windows.  A lot of application updates ask for restarts on installs or updates.  I never had this problem with the single cpu.
Has anyone else had this occur?  Is there a fix?  My new cpu runs a bit hotter than the old.  I get core temp. 42 C and AMD 64 temp. 41-48 C in SpeedFan.  (case temp. 18 C)  How does this compare with others with this board and cpu?

Nothing has ever been overclocked on this system.
Everything is plugged into a Belkin Surgemaster powerbar.
I haven't mentioned the power supply. I'll get to that. I have been using an ANTEC NEOPOWER 480W POWER SUPPLY (ATX12V  DUAL 12V RAILS ACTIVE PFC W/ DETACHABLE OUTPUT CABLES) for about a year on this system without
any issues. One morning, I wake up, hit the power button on my coolermaster case, and nothing happens.
CPU fan won't even spin. Nothing happens.
    O.k., blown power supply, I think . . . .
So I take out my Antec and put it in another system. That system turns on
    without any problems.
    Hmm . . .
I come here, and I read posts about
potential compatibility issues with Antec power supplies. But if it's a compatibility
issue why was my system working for about a year?
    O.k., fine. I'll buy a Enermax 535W EG565P-VE FMA 24P (115/230 VAC) power supply.
I just plug it into the mainboard (nothing else). Hit the power button . . .
The CPU fan spins for half a second, and then nothing.
Did my motherboard just suddenly die for no reason?
    Any suggestions?

Pull the AC plug from PSU and set cmos in clear position with battery removed for atlest 20 minutes perhaps longer .
Then try to post the system barebone .
Just cpu,1 pcs memory in slot 1 , gfx card , and keyboard in PS2.
No usb devices at all including card reader and no pci cards harddisks or cdoms/dvd/floppy.
It could also be caused by a short or a malfunctioning fan connected to mobo.
Try to disconnect all case fans from mobo headers if you have any connected to additional fan holders.
The chipset fan can also be disconnected momentarily just to see if it posts.
If none of this helps , replace cmos battery and try again .

  • K8N Neo2 Platinum 2 DIMMs won't post

I have two 512 MB Crucial DIMMs (DDR PC3200, CL=3, UNBUFFERED, NON-ECC, DDR400, 2.6V,  64Meg x 64, Part #CT6464Z40B). If I have either one installed, the system will POST. If I have both installed (I've tried them in both recommended combinations, in DIMM1 and 2 and in DIMM3 and 4), the system won't POST. The D-Bracket displays the Memory Detection Test signal. Since each stick works alone, I don't think either one is faulty. Can anyone explain why this is happening, and how to fix it?

  • Audigy 2 on Neo2 Platinum causes LOCK UPs/BSODs!!! Help!

I have a videocard with a HUGE, I mean HUGE custom CPU heatsink attached to it.  This leaves me only ONE slot available for my Audigy 2.  And that slot is the last slot 5, orange color.
Its the ONLY ONE AVAILABLE.  I read on these forums about some incompatibility of Audigy 2 with MSI Neo2 Platinum.  Thats what I have.  I tried several later and older BIOSes including the official one and the latest beta one.
Still, when I play UT2004 or some other games that demand EAX/Hardware 3D sound - I get a dark blue BSOD without a message (its like a non-WinXP BSOD, its a hardware BSOD as I call it, dark blue color).  It comes with a sqeeking sound.  I have to restart my PC afterwards.
It happens after 3-4 minutes of playing.
When I REMOVE the soundcard - everything is fine, NO BSOD.
I tried different Audigy 2 drivers, but they all give the same result.  This did not happen on my old ASUS A7N8X-Deluxe 2.0, and the soundcard was in PCI Slot 5 as well.  I tried to format, and etc., - same thing if the soundcard is in the PCI slot!
I have PCI lock ENABLED (AGP set to 67Mhz, and PCI LOCK DETECTION set to ENABLED).
How do I fix this problem?

When you said that you have PCI lock enabled and PCI lock detection enabled, were you talking about the same thing?  If not, where in the BIOS is the PCI lock? I could only find PCI Lock Detection.

  • SATA HDD installation on K8N Neo2 Platinum, Non-RAID, Non-Bootable

    Hi-
I’m a rank newbie on this forum (first post). I have a K8N Neo2 Platinum Mobo, which I’ve recently gotten up and running, with Windows XP-Pro SP2 installed on a single IDE drive. I would now like to add 2 SATA drives. I don’t need or want the SATA drives to operate in a RAID array, nor do I want them to be bootable. I want to use them independently for data storage. I read the following thread (I am posting here on a separate thread per the author’s wishes not to get his original thread too junked-up) :
Single SATA or Multiple Drive Array Setup FAQ
I have not yet plugged-in either of my SATA drives, because I don’t want to risk corrupting my existing boot (IDE) drive. I just had a few questions about the procedure given in the referenced thread, in the Single Drive Setup:
    - Step 14 States: “Make sure the “RAID Mode” is Stripping and Striping Block at 64k or Optimal. Hit F7 (Finish)”. Is this correct for a single non-boot drive?
    - Step 22 States: “As most of you know when you enter the Setup for Win2k/WinXP you will need to hit F6 to load additional drivers for other SCSI devices.” I assume this means I need to boot from the Windows CD. Is this true even if I already have Windows installed on an IDE HDD on this system? At what point will I need to hit <F6> ? Will I be prompted to do so?
    - I have downloaded (from the MSI website) the NVIDIA RAID CLASS DRIVER & NVIDIA Nforce Storage Controller (20 files, 1.3 MB total). Should I put these on a floppy? Or can I access them from a directory on my OS HDD?
    - Should I go ahead and plug-in both of the 2 SATA drives I want to add to the system before beginning the driver installation? The only reason I would consider installing them one at a time is if it eliminated any confusion between RAID vs. independent (I want independent operation). If I do install them one at a time, do I have to install the driver twice?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    - the bbdude

    OK Thanks JeanGuy and ssjkakaroto,
I have connected both of my SATA drives. They are enabled in BIOS but not set to RAID. I booted up to Windows on my IDE drive. In Disk Manager, the display shows Disk 0 (C: System), Disk 1 and Disk 2 as uninitialized, and my DVD (D:) drive. At this point, I could probably go ahead and run the Initialize and Convert Disk Wizard to get these disks formatted and be dome with ot now. Before I do that though, I just have a couple of more questions.
    - I had already loaded the nVidia nForce3 system driver prior to installing the SATA drives, but I went ahead and did that again after installing the SATA drives and restarting Windows. I used Live Update, which went out to the MSI site and found version 5.03 of the  nVidia nForce3 system driver. I'm not sure how to find the "Nvidia 5.10 driver package which include the latest SATA driver", ssjkakaroto referred-to. The Live Update install procedure did ask if I wanted to install IDE driver and I said yes. It then asked to over-write what I already had there (I said yes to that too). As the file names streamed-by, I though I saw some filenames with nv... listed. So, bottom line, is I'm not sure if I have the lates and greatest nVidia SATA drivers installed. How can I find out what drivers are installed?
    - As I mentioned in my previous post, I have also downloaded and unzipped the NVIDIA RAID CLASS DRIVER & NVIDIA Nforce Storage Controller (20 files, 1.3 MB total) from the MSI site; however, I don't know how to "install" this now that I have the files. There are a couple of .exe and a .bat file (bit no setup.exe).
I may already have everything I need to partition and format these drives. I just want to bve sure I'm not skipping a step that is essential to optimal performance.
    Thanks -

  • MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum cant upgrade to BIOS 1.4, Windows wont boot.

    Hello
I have a MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum and I cant upgrade to BIOS 1.4.  I have tried everything and cannot get Windows XP to boot with BIOS 1.4.
I have reset the BIOS, set defaults, cleared the battery etc but when I load BIOS 1.4 (from a 98SE an ME boot dish and even from the Live Update?
The only solution is to rebuild Windows after loading BIOS 1.4???
    Help

    Hi !
Well, I have that problem, too. I think the reason is a new RAID-BIOS-Version built in the BIOS-Update. I´ve tried the beta-versions V1.51 and V1.5X, too - but they won´t run anyway.
My WinXp hangs while booting (before the WINDOWS-XP-Logo appears, or while fading in...). I cannot reinstall Windows completely because, when I install the 2 raid-drivers, the installation routine hangs before the licensetext - when I don´t install the drivers i cannont install on the raid-drive (beacuase the installation routine shows 2 hdds).
I think, a new driver will solve this problem, but I don´t know where to find it....

  • MSI neo2 Platinum Instability

I just got my whole new computer setup within the last few days.  The problem I have come to now is that my system pretty much randomly reboots itself every so often( like 1-5 hours).  I've had this happen both while the system is under load being burning a dvd and also when i'm just surfin the net.  One of the first things I did was to flash the bios to version 1.4 before i installed the os.  I also read a guide that I saw someone post on here about the settings for the neo2 motherboard and adjusted what was needed accordingly and checked that my bios is set about the same for stability.  At first I thought it was just my video card screwing it up as when I put the system together it was with a very old card but then I got the new one and the same thing keeps happening.  Then I thought it may be that my windows installation was corrupt or just a bad one so i formatted my drive and redid the installation, but to no avail, I still got the same random reboots.  The temperature readouts in the bios are 37 for the cpu and 30 for the case so i don't think its overheating or anything.  I am wondering if anyone has experienced similar problems or knows of this problem and can lend a suggestion to what the problem is.
    My setup is as follows:
    MSI K8N neo2 Platinum
    AMD 3500 90nm

turn of auto matic reboots so you can see the bsod
and post stop code and any driver etc it blames
    Memtest86
I'm not sure how to turn off automatic reboots.  I only see the blue screen for literally a split second just before it reboots.
I'm using WinXP btw and have all updates installed incause that matters. Anyway everytime it restarted in the first install it used to blame the video driver but with this new second install of windows i have a different video card and different drivers so it doesn't say "device driver wrong for video card(or something similar) anymore.  Now it says pretty much the same thing but doesn't limit it to the video card, it just says device drivers are wrong or something like that.

what is your newest PSU? can you provide PSU details(can be found into PSU sticker), and remaining parts of your hardware e.g. what VGA you got?
"some time the cpu temp say`s 104  c !!! put when i toutch the fan i didn`t find that it`s hot like that "
seems your CPU heatsink is not making good contact with CPU surface, or there is too much thermal paste or CPU cooler is going down.
power down PC, remove power cord from the PSU  and re seat CPU cooler, clean CPU socket from any dust, clean CPU surface from existing paste and apply a new one. then mount CPU cooler (ensure its mounted property, ensure CPU FAN is spinning at expected RPM). re-test, if no go, change your CPU cooler with new better one which gonna do the job.
thank you very much for your response
i change the PSU again  with other and the computer work fine now

    Hello,
Recently I built my first computer ever, see bottom.  After getting windows installed I then had problems with installing other programs and general stability issues.  I tried reinstalling windows and after the reinstall I got the same problems.
Something to do with the instability is when I start it up, and go into BIOS, it states my Athlon 64 3500+ as running at 2211, a half percent overclock.  Also, even though I have the FSB set as 200mhz, when I go into CoreCenter on windows it states the FSB as being set 201mhz.  In the nVidia system utility, it states my memory as running at 402mhz, and I had to crank that down to 400mhz to get stability, it allowed my to install programs without error, but there were still stability problems like crashes(blue screen, the computer just plain restarting without notice).  I took out one of my memory cards, both of them work alone though, I've ran memory test utilities.  That had a good effect and the computer runs fairly stable, but I still have problems, and I want to be able to take advantage of dual channel.  I'm running my memory on auto and it's using the times of 2-3-3-6-2T.
Another problem I'm experiencing is the AC97 audio not being detected and loaded by windows, it will say I have no audio device, and the speaker will not show up in the notification area in the bottom right-hand corner.  This happens inconsistantly.
                               -Thank You

    hi bknoll,
    welcome to the forum.
    1) i wouldn't worry overmuch at the 201 issue.

which test utilities did you use, Don't quiet understand  Quote

    3) It may be worth checking the Mushkin site or any documentation you have to verify that the auto settings agree with the quoted settings for the modules. It's not unkown for errors to occur when the memory controller on the CPU to misinterpret the SPD chip setting on your sticks - this is where the auto settings come from. Some memory like certain corsair modules need to run at different settings on AMD64, thus auto timings must be overidden,
    4) Have you installed the Realtek drivers from the CD, & enabled onboard sound in Bios. When these are done normally there's the MSI Sound Effect manager in control panel. you just need to set your speaker config in the Windows Sounds & Audio Devices.
    5) Usual question What power supply are you using as been underpowered on the 12v rail in particular can be the cause of crashes,
