Neo2P 3500+ 90nm problem

Have neo2plat and had everything going ok with 3500 130nm cpu. System was great - once I had all drivers/bios updated. Was like this for a few weeks.
Then I got a new 90nm 3500+. Though it would be a simple swap, but boy was I wrong. Boot to windows - explorer.exe cant load...eventually bsod. Reboot - get bsod before can even get into safe mode.
So, try to reformat and start over. Goes ok until half way then says cant copy file from cd hit enter to retry. Hit enter, goes ok then pops up again for another file, then more and more until eventually bsod - DURING SETUP. Try different hard drives, ram, xp cd's, cd drives, reset bios, everything basically. No go.
Another forum someone else had basically same exact problem. Anyone have any insight or is this board not like to work with the new procs. 1st and maybe last with msi :(

With these A64's it is typically bad timings people choose to make in Bios or bad RAM. We would have half the threads here on memory errors if folks would just run Memtest and have a clue how to loosen timings. More often than not we get folks that know what the timings are in the Intel or AMD XP world that try those settings without realising that A64's do not like tight timings and refuse to believe even what the memory makers tell them to use with A64's.
Let me just say that we have tested this also over in the Via section, People find that their memory operates at much the same speed overall even when it is set at 333 instead of 400 and benchs like 400 would. Try it here. Use Sandra to benchmark bandwidth. Then go into Bios and downclock it to 333 and rerun the test. You will likely be shocked just how well the CPU handles the memory at the lower speed and also give that much more stability. I know you won't believe me so I ask you to try it yourself and report the numbers.

  • 3500+ 90nm winchester core excellent so far

just got done swapping out 3500+ newcastle with 3500+ winchester...so far the big difference ive noticed is in temps...my newcastle would run at about 45c idle and up to 58c load...with winchester it runs a cool 38c idle to 49c load...now thats a big difference for me....i havent done any overclocking as of yet but i would like to know if anyone else is having good luck with this new core...until then ill get out of here happy

I like my 3000+, I can't really start "beating" on it until my new RAM gets here

    Hello All,
I'm a real newbie when it comes to overclocking.  I spent some time reading through various technical threads from various forums before I decided to tweak my newly built system.  Found an article by "Some1ne" on overclocking with a NEO4 Platinum and found it to be quite useful.  Last night was the first time I went through with the tweakis and probably didn't do it right or at least get the best possible performance from my components.  Below was what I did from the bios (1.2v) to the best of my knowledge without the system failing to post or crash when running programs or playing games.  Other than 3dmark05, I haven't use any other programs to benchmark the hardware's performance.

  • K8n neo2 POST problem during cold startup

    Hello everybody,
Sorry for posting this again but i just don't understand it.
    The facts:
Every once in a while - sometimes daily and sometimes every 2nd or 3rd day - when I power on my computer the bios hangs at its very first stage with all d-leds red.
This is according to the d-bracket : 'system power on, bios will hang here if processor is damaged on not installed properly'.
But after ~ 30 seconds the boot process continues (it apparently doesn't start again but continues) displaying the following error message after IDE detection: 'warning. system now in safe mode. please reset all overclocking features.'
After that everything is FINE, the bios settings are as always (failsafe with sata enabled) and the computer has no other problems. It runs all applications without trouble, memtest86 and prime95 don't give me errors and I won't get bsod's.
This entire issue happens only when the computer was turned off for a prolonged period, i.e. it has to be off for more than 6-8 hours.
    I just don't understand it  .
I see that here are a couple of guys with quite a huge knowlege of this machines and so i hope that someone has a clue to what this issue can be caused by and perhaps how it could be solved ?
    Thanx,

(Forgive me my misspellings, i'm not a native so)

This is the email I sent to MSI UK:
    Hi
I believe I have a faulty motherboard as the BIOS only posts after I switch the power on at least 3 - 6 times from a cold boot.
The error message I keep getting is 'warning system now in safe mode, please reset overclocking features in bios or press F1 to continue' although I have not altered any overclocking features or overclocked anything.  One thing I have noticed is that the processor is running at 2210 Mhz (used MSI Core Centre) instead of 2200 MHz as standard even though it is displays 200 MHz in the BIOS, could this be possibly something to do with it?
Please could you suggest what process I need to do to RMA the board or how I could diagnose the problem.
I have tried 3 different types of RAM in various slots, 1 and 2 sticks, dual and single channel and the same thing keeps happening.

  • Question about 74GB Raptor and the ubiquitous "F6"

    Hey All,
I just installed my raptor and Windows XP, then SP2, etc.  without any problems.  I didn't press F6 before the Windows install.  I'm rather disappointed with the speed of the Raptor given all the good reviews I've heard about its speed.  Everything works pretty well and Windows identifies the HD.  I've installed it on SATA3 in case I want to overclock.  Anyway, my question is:  Would reinstalling Windows but doing the whole "F6" SATA Driver install help to improve performance?
Here's my speed test results from Device Manager:
    Theoretical Limit: 150
    Burst Speed: 113.4
    Sustained Speed: 71.3
HD is listed as WDC WD740GD-00FLA2
I have the nVidia nForce3 250 Parallel and Serial ATA Controller (v2.6) listed.  I have installed newest nForce Drivers.  Should I enable Command Queing?  Any BIOS options that would help?   Thanks!
    AMD Athlon 64 3500+  90nm Micron
    MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum
    WD Raptor 74GB
    ATI Radeon 9800 XT
    512 MB PC3200 Corsair at 2.5-3-3-6

Anyone notice performance increase or decrease of their HD when using the nVidia IDE SW drivers?  particularly with a 74GB Raptor?  I've also heard of burner issues when installing the IDE SW but have not used my burner yet.

  • FYI: To those getting no video at all during POST on K8N Neo2 Plat

I've been racking my brain all day/night fighting my new K8N Neo2 Platinum system. I first put together a minimal system with just memory, CPU/cooler, and AGP card and powered it up to make sure it would work. Sure enough I saw the Platinum POST screen and I went into the BIOS.
I figure all is good so I turn off the system and install the rest of the components.Like so many others I powered back up to the disheartening screen of nothingness. The D-Bracket showed all 4 LEDs green so I was baffled as to the problem. I tried various forms of restart with the same result. With a sigh I began reverting my system back to the original bare bones set up. Same result...black screen. I tried various CMOS resets after reading everything I could find. New result: black screen but POST would always get stuck with D-Bracket indicating "Initializing Floppy Drive Controller".
After trying various memory configurations, various CMOS resets, various AGP graphics cards, and many other things for several hours to no avail I finally got out an ancient PCI graphics card and was finally able to get video and enter the BIOS. I selected Load Fail-Safe Defaults and made sure to select AGP for the Primary Graphic's Adapter setting. I swapped the PCI card out and the AGP card back in. Still no video on the AGP card. I put the PCI card and AGP card in together and rebooted again. PCI card has video, AGP card does not.
I still don't have my problems solved but I at least wanted to let people who are getting no video on their AGP graphics card know that they may be able to get video on a PCI graphics card. As a side effect, for whatever reason, it appears that I get fully through the POST again and the D-Bracket lights up all the LEDs.
Hope this helps someone out there who is frustrated like I am and maybe someone can figure out what's wrong with the AGP graphics.
The BIOS version is currently W7025NMS V1.3 092404 15:57:09...I'm going to work on updating that next and see if that fixed anything.
Here's my system if it would work:
    MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum
    AMD Athlon 64 3500+ 90nm
    Gigabyte 3D Cooler-ULTRA GT
    OCZ 520W PowerStream
    OCZ 512MB DDR400 PC3200 EL Platinum Rev. 2 (4 sticks)
    BFG nVideo GeForce 6800 Ultra
I made the following substitutions to test:
OCZ DDR400 PC3200 EL Platinum Rev. 2 (1 stick in various slots, 2 sticks in various slots in single and dual channel mode)
    Corsair 512MB Value Select DDR400 PC3200 (1 stick in DIMM 1 slot)
Radeon 9700 Pro (old AGP card -- didn't work any better than BFG card)
Some old PCI card -- not even sure what it is (allowed me to see what was going on!)

Nope. Cable is definately not on upside down! =)
I get the same behavior on both floppy drives I've tried. The light only comes on when it tries to access it and it reacts as though I've put in a bad floppy. Thing is the floppy works on several computers and works on one of the floppy drives I used with this system, only while it was connected to another machine.
I was able to update the bios to v1.4 without using a floppy by making a bootable CD and flashing from there. Still no go. I think at this point I'm ready to concede that I do in fact have a motherboard that has gone south. I've tried every combination of option I can think of in the BIOS but the AGP and Floppy Controller both appear to be fubar.
Still, the one good thing that came out of all this is that I found out how to make bootable CDs. I'm sure to use that little trick over and over and that may make it so I don't really need these pesky floppy drives anymore at all! I'll make a post on this so we'll soon all be floppy free! =)

How about ZipZoomFly at : http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=241143
$149.99 with free 2 day delivery.
I ordered mine a week ago from ZZF.  Quick delivery and no problems.  I'm surprised prices have gone up- it was $134.99 with free 2 day shipping last week.  The retail 3500+ 90nm Athlon64 has gone down a dollar, though...  Also try http://www.pricegrabber.com or http://www.pricewatch.com to compare prices.

  • Nforce2 to nforce3 without formatting .. anyone?

My k8n neo2 is now running flawlessly with pinochio´s 1.37b bios. It took me a long time to get things straight, but it seems as things are rock stable now. I only have one annoying problem, if one could call it a problem.
My benchmarks are totally unaffected of any changes I make. F. ex. 3dmark05 shows 5500-5600 regardless of wether I set details to max or to lowest in driver options, any other changes dont resolve in a score change. The same goes for memory and any other benchmarks, they are all always the same regardless of what changes I make. I have also tried different mobo and graphic drivers, its like my speeds are locked and wont budge, could this be a result due to the lack of formatting when I upgraded?
All my earlier problems were were related to boot/bios/ps2 issues, none related to windows itself, once windows loaded and drivers were installed the system seemed very stable. I have also checked driver versions in regard to wether they were appropriate for the nforce3 system, and everything seems to check out fine. My system is as follows:
    Windows XP pro SP2
    K8N NEO2 G54, Bios 1.36 CPU: winchester 3500, 90nm
    Maxtor 80 GB + Maxtor 120 GB + IBM 40 GB
    2x 512 pc 3200 geil value ram
    32x 12x 48x CDRW
    Onboard 8 channels AC97.

So. even if I like your advice, I strongly suggest that one should add: "... in case of strange phenomena: safe your data and do a fresh install of Windows".
In the case that problems will occur, I am pretty sure that doing a fresh install right away is much more efficient than extensive troubleshooting and having to decide that a fresh install is needed in the end.

    Great advice!
It's always something I do when swapping out hardware. Always backup your data beforehand as if you were preparing for a fresh install. then when you discover problems to arduous and time consuming to troubleshoot then it's no big deal to format and reinstall.
I look at it this way, if I can't figure it out in an hour, then I'm throwin in the towel Some cases I'll just do a repair depending on the scenario I'm in and time is an issue. Like in a server environment where installing all the software, databases, remapping paths adding users setting user priveledges, shares etc would take forever

  • MSI neo2 Platinum Instability

I just got my whole new computer setup within the last few days.  The problem I have come to now is that my system pretty much randomly reboots itself every so often( like 1-5 hours).  I've had this happen both while the system is under load being burning a dvd and also when i'm just surfin the net.  One of the first things I did was to flash the bios to version 1.4 before i installed the os.  I also read a guide that I saw someone post on here about the settings for the neo2 motherboard and adjusted what was needed accordingly and checked that my bios is set about the same for stability.  At first I thought it was just my video card screwing it up as when I put the system together it was with a very old card but then I got the new one and the same thing keeps happening.  Then I thought it may be that my windows installation was corrupt or just a bad one so i formatted my drive and redid the installation, but to no avail, I still got the same random reboots.  The temperature readouts in the bios are 37 for the cpu and 30 for the case so i don't think its overheating or anything.  I am wondering if anyone has experienced similar problems or knows of this problem and can lend a suggestion to what the problem is.
    My setup is as follows:
    MSI K8N neo2 Platinum
    AMD 3500 90nm

I'm not sure how to turn off automatic reboots.  I only see the blue screen for literally a split second just before it reboots.
I'm using WinXP btw and have all updates installed incause that matters. Anyway everytime it restarted in the first install it used to blame the video driver but with this new second install of windows i have a different video card and different drivers so it doesn't say "device driver wrong for video card(or something similar) anymore.  Now it says pretty much the same thing but doesn't limit it to the video card, it just says device drivers are wrong or something like that.

When I try to boot I get three reds in the diagnostic LEDs
    LED 1 - Red
    LED 2 - Red
LED 3 - Red (used to be orange)
    LED 4 - Off
This corresponds (at far as I can tell based upon the manual) to a problem during "Intializing Video Interface."  I've reset the CMOS, twice, reseated the CPU, and reseated the video card.  I think I can hear the HDD spin up getting ready to boot, but my fans are so loud it makes it hard to tell for sure.  Anyone experience a similar problem or have a solution?

    1) Turn cool and quite off. When I had it on I had trouble rebooting, I would get no video signal.
    2) Have cool and quite on and raise the Vcore to 1.55 volts (got this from another post).
I believe that having cool and quiet on is related to the rebooting issue as it messes with the Vcore. Hopefully a future bios release will fix it.
    Hope this helps.
I don't get a video signal at all.

  • Neo 2 platinum no post fans run power off

Neo 2  platinum with 3500 90nm will not post. Fans run with power switch off, in fact all fans run with all front connectors disconnected. Tried barebones with only agp, cpu and memory, same thing, no post, fans run without  the front power switch even connected. I saw a similar problem posted on this forum before but I cant seem to find it now.

I have the same problem. Other than that it works just fine. At this point I am not even considering it a problem anymore since I don't ever unplug the PSU.
That is about where I am at but I have gotten all sort of wierd minor happenings with my board and I wonder if they are related.
Boot up , not everything showing on desktop ..start button , icons all gone..boot up again and they are there. No problems.
Unsucessful boot up, try again and it boots up fine.
Changing values in bios produce odd behaviors...eg. run ram at 200 gets faster benches than at 225mhz.
I started OCing with this board abit too early so it could be just a poor Windows install and these are things that have happened very infrequently overall.
Once I get the PC where I want it hardware wise I am going to re-install.
Overall though my board runs really well now and I am happy with it for the most part but I will continue to try and figure out why the heck the fans spin up when the PSU if first turned on.   Its obviously a MOBO issue because the PSU only does what it is told when its turned on, it cannot turn the mobo on.
Has anyone tried powering up the mobo outside of the case yet?
I was going to try this next and if it works then I will add rubber or paper spacers to the standoffs as well as to the screws.
And at that id say ive done about all I am qualified to do with the motherboard as far as diagnosis goes...I will just live with what I have unless I run into something else later on.
BTW I think I have an older board because it came in a different looking box then what I have seen everywhere else.
I also believe I had some of the false start issues that alot of people were complaining about and I am pretty sure I have worked thru them.  So if you think you have a problematic board just stick with it, be patient and it might just pay off like it has for me.

  • My first computer build (success!)

I just build my first PC ever today. I was really suprised because it only took me about 3 hours. Everything booted up fine on the first try. I didn't have to use the floppy to install SATA drivers, I didn't have to adjust the BIOS, I didn't have to do anything at all other than put it together, turn it on, install windows and then run the MSI live utility. After reading all the problems on the board, I just wanted everyone to know I had a successful experience and I'm a complete newbie.

    2x Seagate 200gb SATA HDD
