Neo4 - noisy northbirdge fan

What is it with MSI and their northbrige fans?  This is my second MSI board, and I have the same problem.  After a few weeks, the NB fan sounds like a bee.  On my old 845 ultra I have unplugged it and it ran fine, but that was with P4 1.8 that rarely got up to 30C.
Unfortunatelly my core center does not show the NB temperature, so I'm not sure if it safe to unplug the fan.
- how do i get the core center to show NB temp?
- does anyone have a solution to silence this fan (short of replacing it)?
Much appreciated.

As for the fan, there is no solution other than replacing it with a better aftermarket one.
Unfortunately this fan problem is not unique to MSI....

  • G5 Dual 1.8Ghz -randomly very NOISY & FAST fan!

Hi I couldn't find a post for this elsewhere!
1 or 2 times a week my G5 dual 1.8Ghz fan will begin to speed up and become incredibly fast and noisy, when this happens it doesn't slow back down, it keeps going!
Once this begins I am often unable to shutdown or restart the computer and I have to resort to pressing the power button.
On restarting the fan is normal again, but it always happens again at some point.
This happens while the computer is 'awake', but might have happened from sleep once or twice (I can't remember).
    Many thanks for your help,
    Colin

Hello Colin and welcome to the Apple forums.
This is what we call a "Kernal Panic" and basically the OS stops responding, also to hardware which slows down the fans from the default "turbo" mode your experiencing.
What could be causing this requires a careful process of elimination.
Disconnecting all other external hardware except a wired mouse, keyboard and one monitor is the first step.
Next is to backup all data, c boot from the G5 Tiger (not upgrade over Panther disk!) and Disk Utility Erase w/Zero option your boot drive. Reinstall Tiger fresh and immediatly Software update until clear. Install only vital apps from original sources and cd's (avoid those that alter your sytem/ use a admin password to install), files and data from backup. Update your drives driver software from the makers sites for Tiger.
If these two methods don't resolve the problem, then you should try installing a new boot drive (Zero it first) and repeating the step above to eliminate a bad boot drive.
Once these three steps are done and you still have problems, it could be a RAM or defective video card or other major hardware problem.

  • CPU Fan controller / Noisy CPU Fan

    Hi All.
I have the GD65 and the FX 8120 and the CPU fan is a bit noise( ~5750 RPM ).
Is there a smart/PWM CPU fan controller in the bios ?
The end goal is to only have the CPU fan get noisy when under load and not all the time.
    Thanks in advance.

i.e. set you target temp to 40C and a minimum fan speed of 25%. That means your fan will run at 25% of its max rated speed until the CPU temp is at 40C, at which stage it will start spinning up to higher speeds.
The bios is the new fancy GUI and mouse one.
I found a a setting that seams to match your description: "Main->Hardware Monitor->CPU smart fan controller" and that then showed a setting called "CPU min.fan speed()"(looks like a function call to me).
I set the "CPU smart fan target" to 40C and the "CPU mun.fan speed()" to 50%.
So now would that mean that the CPU fan will spin at a minimum of 50% at 40C and slower when when less then 40C ?

  • Automatic power-down of PXI-1033 chassis. Noisy chassis fan.

I went to use my PXI chassis today. I always keep it powered, but today it wasn't on when I went to use it. Turns out that there's an automatic power down if the fan 'fails'. So I removed the chassis power, and then repowered the chassis. Heard a noisy fan - like one of the blades were hitting something solid. And I only heard something when the chassis was in the 'big fan down' orientation It was the big fan on the 'bottom' of the unit which cools the boards. To fix this, I removed the air filter, and then the wire screen, and then the wire fan protector. I rebent the 4 legs of the wire fan protector (be sure to rebend both elbows of each leg) so that it sits farther away from the fan blades. Put it back to gether, and now no sound.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Apparently my PXI chassis is part of a 'fan replacement' recall.

  • K8N Neo4 noisy NB: Let's MAKE MSI solve it!!!

I believe that the noisy NB is a big and serious issue.
I really think that the only way that MSI will address it and solve it(through software or anything else,i don't care)
is that we all send on the same day an e-mail to MSI.
One of us can write it and we all can send it from our e-mail addresses!
I don't have an e-mail address so anyone who does is welcome to share it with us!
But first we must all agree and join our efforts.
I do believe that we might get good results!
    Your thoughts?

Well then: Quote from: blazing storm on 23-April-05, 05:37:13
You could always use a Zalman Fanmate 2 to control the NB fan speed!

  • [VIA] MS-6712 - Noisy Processor Fan

For the last 6 months or so when I switch my PC on the processor fan is very noisy (you can hear it at the other end of the house) like its running flat out.  It does this until Windows has finished loading then it quietens down to a normal background hum.   If I reboot the PC its fine, the noise only happens if the machine has been switched off for a couple of hours.
Since the problem started I've changed the processor fan, case, and psu which rules them out.  I can't even blame microsoft as the machine has been upgraded from 2000 to XP with no change.   The only thing I think it could be is something in the BIOS but can't see any obvious settings.  Has anyone got any other ideas?
    Motherboard: KT4V MS-6712 v1.x (VIA KT400 Chipset)
    Processor: Athlon XP2400+
    Processor Fan: Coolermaster (unsure which)
    Bios: V1.C

That is great!  I thought there was something more fundamental.
I will have a close look at that fan. It has a 80mm fan same as my Spire. If you are running at 1700 rpm, so can I. Can't find room for a 120 mm, which I really would like.

  • K8N Neo4 Plat NB fan Speed problems

    Hey,
I recently bought this system (see signature), and just today the NB fan started going haywire… I’ve done some searching on these forums and it appears im not the only one that is having problems with the K8N Neo4 Platinum chipset cooler.
CnQ reports RPM numbers in the upper 7000 (usually around 7500 RPM), and the noise it generates is intolerable.
I’ve tried to manually set the NB fan speeds via the recommended SpeedFan application, but to no prevail.
Can it really be that there are no solutions to this problem other than replacing the chipset fan?
If that is so MSI should really consider selling future revisions of the motherboard with a different fan, or, enable control of the NB fan voltage.
I really hope someone can help with this, all the other topics didn’t provide any other solution than to replace the fan… but the last entry to these discussions was back in May, so I hope additional solutions may have surfaced.
    Thanks

It wont go any faster then present though.
In my case the fanmate with setting wide open produces a little less rpm on the northbridge then without this device.
the fan will spin faster if the voltage applied to the fan is higher, and slower if the voltage is lower. so if you supply the same voltage (basicaly use the same connector on the mobo) and keep the fan mate to full, the fan will spin a little bit slower since the fan mate already acts like a resistor, even if set at full speed.

  • K8N neo4 plat northbridge fan

The fan on my northbridge(K8N neo4 plat ultra) has died on me.   Is there a replacement that is orderable? or am I looking at replacing the mobo?

I had one of these laying around & mounted it to my Neo4 as soon as I took it out of the box - Because I heard plenty of bad things about the stock fan.

Very quiet, cools great (never exceeds 32C) & fits perfectly.
You can see a pic of it mounted here - https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=93129.360

  • Very noisy iMac, fans running at full speed even when performing smal tasks

I have a 2009 21 iMac, recently the computer became very noisy with the fans running at full speed all the time even when checking the email or just using Safari. I don't do anything crazy like 3d renderings so I don't know why the fans wont stop. I recently cleaned it but this didn't seem to solve the problem.
Anyone knows what's the problem and how can I fix it?

  • MSI K7N2 Delta-ILSR Noisy Northbridge fan

    Hi
I'm having a problem with the nforce chipset fan on my K7N2 Delta-ILSR.
It makes a horrible wailing sound when cold booting and is only running at about 2500rpm instead of 4000rpm.
It does this usually for about 30 seconds then runs normally.
Does it just need cleaning   or is it on it's way out?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

    Hi,
I had the same problem. All I did was loosened the left screw(when looking from the front of the case) until the noise stopped. Give it a try!!!

  • Slow down noisy system fan in Windows idle mode on Portege M400

    Hallo again,
has anybody managed yet to prevent the Systemfan from making noise running all the time, even when CPU usage is very low?
I am using "Notebook Hardware Control 2.0 for Core Duo" but the Fanfeature is not implemented yet.
I did not try the "TSB6A01KJ0000R01_TOSHIBA_WINBIOS_Update_18W.e xe" (Fan optimised) yet, as this seems to be outdated (20.9.2006).
MSInfo32 shows Version 3.10, 28.11.2006 running on my machine.
    Thanks, Martin.

Thanks for the link. I knew this post allready. So it seems to me, that there is no other solution to the problem yet as flashing an outdated bios and using a Core Duo rater Core 2 Duo CPU. For me a software-tool would be ok as well if there is no way to get a working bios. Otherwise you may have to do it the "hard way" by modifying the fan-voltage like so often...
    Thanks
    Martin.

  • Noisy left fan on brand new MacBook Pro 15" (started after 4 days)

The left fan (just under the speaker) is making noise, sounds as if it's catching on the casing or something.
Problem is, the Macbook is non-standard (hig-res matte display) and I need it painfully much for the next two monts - it was bought specifically for the purpose of major jobs.
Is it possible to have it fixed in a day or two or does it require ages and ages?
    Thanks!

My MBP (Mid 2009) just started doing this on the left side, and I've had it apart several times trying to clean and re-lubricate that fan. The sound is not as bad now, but the increased fan noise is still present and I'll be shelling out $50 for a new one probably tomorrow. I'm putting up a YouTube video so you can hear the awful noise it was making last night (harbinger75 movies there).
Mine's not under warranty anymore, and I've been a Mac/PC tech for years, so it takes all of fifteen minutes to change one out.
Hopefully, they'll just replace the fan for you.

  • MS-7125 K8N Neo4 Platinum NB fan speed

This is the information I was given by MSI tech support. Even though MSI describes Core Cell's Buzzfree technology as controlling the NB fan speed it only works on certain models and the 7125 is not one of those.

I wish it was buzz free.  My 7125 NB fan buzzes like crazy, I need to find a solution to this annoyance.

Where are you getting the tempreading? The tempreading in Speedfan must be wrong because, with fan it says 10-12 Celcius wich could be around 30 real degrees. If YOU are reading 30 (fake) degrees i think you got somewhat more. 80-90 or so...  I tried unplugging my fan for 5 minutes and after that you couldnt put a finger on the small heatsink around the fan without getting burned.

  • K8N Neo4 Platinum NorthBridge Fan

I've had a K8N platinum motherboard for about a year and a half now and have had lots of problems with the northbridge fan. The first one they included started rattling and went out within about 6 months.  I replaced it with another socket fan, which has recently started making the same noises.  I decided to give up on these fans since they did not last and attached a heatsink.  I booted up my computer however, and discovered that the heatsink is hot to the touch.  I reinstalled windows on my machine and no longer have the diagnostic software which tells me the temperature for my northbridge chipset.  I have heard different accounts for how hot a north bridge chip should be.
Does anyone have any advice?  How hot can the north bridge get without getting fried? Should I leave on the heatsink or replace it with a better ball bearing fan?  Any suggestions for good fans?

    marcus65,
That was one of the issues I had with finding a cooling solution for my motherboard.  I attached an ATI graphics card (x700 i believe) and it does cover the northbridge partially.  I bought a zalman heatsink which was about an inch and a half high and did not fit between the northbridge and the video card.  I had to find a shorter heatsink.  Thanks to everyone that posted suggestions.  I think I will order a ball bearing fan/heatsink for my northbridge.
