Neo4 Plat SLI 1st PCIe slot issue

When I place an Aopen GF6800GT in the upper PCIe slot the system will hang at Memory test according to the D bracket. If I pull it out and boot with no vid card the system goes threw everything normal according to d bracket, I have no idea since I can't see anything.  If I put the card in the lower PCIe slot the system boots normally except I am stuck at 1x speed.  I have pulled everything from the board except CPU,Mem,Vid card and it's all the same, waited without power cord for 30min, all the tricks.  Is this a bad PCIe slot or is this something else.  I have read a few posts about vid card problems with this board.  Any ideas? My last thing to try is a BIOS update, mine isn't the most recent however I don't have high hopes for that solution...
This is the first time I bought an MSI board since their first Athlon board and it had to be RMA'd too, glad to see nothing has changed the last 5 years

That's my point.  Quality built boards have NO luck of the draw they are engineered with a bit more insight then a flimsy plastic piece rubbing over little metal contacts.  This is a horrible design....period.
I can't agree more!!!

But anyway, this isn't about bashing MSI.  I called tech support today.  If they have any switch cards they will send me one, wait time was <1min, have to give them credit there it was a painless experience.  Did everyone elses come with the switch card pre installed?  Just wondering if the switchcard was damaged at the "factory" or if somehow I got a used board.
I got 2 off these boards, and both come with switch card installed correctly and working. The problem only occurs when change from non-SLI to SLI, and then go back to original position. Because the switch card is damage by his latch, so is necessary lock it with the latch then use the damaged side.
As it was said by Anandtech, "We doubt that the lock will last through many changes from normal to SLI and back. In addition, once the pin is turned to unlock the SLI selection card, it is extremely difficult to lock the SLI card again once you have switched the mode. Someone in MSI design needs to take a look at this little plastic part and improve it before MSI gets a raft of RMAs because users can't secure the SLI card with a broken "lock pin"."

  • Neo4 Plat/Sli Dual PCI x16 or Dual x8

I'm a little confused about my motherboard (K8 Neo4 Platinum/Sli)... on the specs written on the box i can see "Dual PCI-E x16"... in the way that i understand that is... that i have 2 pci-e ports with x16 bandwidth on every port...
The usuer's guide says "The mainboard provides two PCI Express x16 and three 32-bit PCI-BUS"
    This is true...??
    2 x16 pci-e = 32 PCI-E lanes for graphics or 2 x8 PCI-E = 16 PCI-E lanes for graphics

There is only 20 pci-e lanes in total on nforce4 .
Dual x-16 in this explanation means the it has two physical x-16 slots .
On delivery the sli card/switch is mounted so the first 16x pci-e port has 16 lanes and the second 16x port 2 lanes .
When it's set to sli mode it reorganizes it to 8 lanes on each of the two slots .

Can anyone confirm if the geforce 8800 GTX will run in a Neo4 Plat SLI? The last bios mentions support for the GX2's but no new updates for the 8800 series.

Tested it and it works  You might have to fiddle around with the cooler a bit - There's a capacitor next to the PCIE slot wich is in the way
Only 1 card tho, you can't run SLI on this board as the 8800GTX requires a full x16 slot and won't work on a x8 slot
    so x8 - x8 SLI won't work.

K89 NEO4 PLAT/SLI Do I have to send it back?

    No worries.
As for the Bios flash all you need to do with a newer core top get it to come up for posting or Bios Adjustments/Flashing is to use a single Stick of RAM. That forces the CPU's Memory Controller into single channel and that will get it done. If you try to post in dual channel with older Bios's that do not fully support a newer chip it will lock and you need then just to remove all RAM except from Slot 1 and reset the Bios as per your user manual.
No worries as it is not as hard as it sounds.

  • Using the "silicon controller" on the MSI NEO4 PLAT SLI, quick question!

I have a stable OC w/ my FX55 (261x11) 2.87GHz, but now I want to use the Silicon Controller, and not just my NVIDIA controller. Does the MSI NEO4 PLAT SLI "LOCK" the silicon controller, so since my FSB is OC'ed, I dont want any problems.... By not using all 4 ports on the NVIDIA controller, will this maybe "relax" the nvidia controller, and not let it work so hard, or does it not matter. (overall speed wise)

All of the PCI-E devices are locked, so that includes the SiI3132 controller and the Marvell Gigabit NIC.    One note, it's best to use the SiI3132 "last".    AnandTech did a benchmark of the two controllers, and the onboard nVIDIA controller was faster, although the 3132 PCI-E controller was much faster than the competitions use of PCI based SiI3112 controllers.   If you've already used your nVIDIA controller for 4 SATA or SATA II devices, then by all means use the SiI3132 without overclocking fear.

  • Can anyone explain this bizarre Neo4 plat/sli circumstance?

Just had mobo upgraded to Neo4 plat/sli. I only have IDE drives in the system currently. They are PHYSICALLY connected in this way:
    IDE socket 1 cable
master - 80GB HDD, empty drive
    slave - DVD burner
    IDE socket 2 cable
master - 120GB HDD, OS installed here (WIN XP PRO SP2)
slave - 120GB HDD, data resides on this disk.
    HOWEVER...
The drives are being recognized at bootup in this way:
Primary Master - 120GB HDD with OS (physically on IDE socket 2 as master)
Primary Slave - DVD Burner (physically on IDE socket 1 as slave)
Secondary Master - 80GB HDD (physically on IDE socket 1 as master)
Secondary Slave - 120GB HDD with data (physically on IDE socket 2 as slave)
Further, the WIN XP disk management utility shows the drives in a similar manner:
    Disk 0 - 120GB w/ OS  (drive C:)
    Disk 1 - 80GB  (no drive letter)
    Disk 2 - 120GB w/ data (drive E:)
    DVD burner - (drive D:)
How can this be? I thought that to show as primary master, a drive must be connected to IDE socket 1 as master? And how in the world can the Primary master and slave drives reside on two different IDE cables?
I didn't do this installation and cannot talk to the tech who did until Monday. FWIW, everything is working just fine. And it all appears to be jumpered properly. But before I go about the process of loading up all my software, etc., I feel a need to understand why this is happening. Is this a function of a bios setting that I can't find?
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks so much!

Well, in the first place welcome to the forum, secondly what you present it's correct, the system drive (OS drive) it has to always be the drive C: that's not a question of Master and Slave because if you go to the system properties you will see those drives as they are configured in the BIOS.
But for me that is a strange configuration....
    Be well....

  • Neo4 plat SLI raid configuration

I made a striped raid config from my 2 160gig SATA drives in SATA 1 and 2. but when i tried to install windows on it, it didnt recognize the raid config and saw it as 2 seperate hard drives. I tried SATA ports 3 and 4. and it made no difference. then i tried 5 and 6. but it uses an old raid controller and it worked fine and i installed windows on it. BUT, im about to reformat and i want to use the newer raid controller. I have the MSI neo4 plat SLI mobo.  But i saw that my mobo came with 2 floppys and i only installed 1 of the floppys during windows install... do i need to install both of them? I guess that might be why it didnt work... but can anyone assure me thats the problem? I didnt think i needed both of them...

YOU HAVE TO INSTALL BoTH DRIVERS ON THE NVIDIA FLOPPY,THE RAID  DRIVER AND THE MASS STORAGE DRIVER. HIT S TWICE TO DO IT. The other floppy is for the silicon image drivers, dont use it unless you use ports 5 and 6.

Neo4 Plat/SLI + Winnie.. Is MSI a respectable company? How can I trust them now?

It seems strange that after you simply swapped a heatsink that your mobo blanked out.
Fiirst, you should check to see if your power supply is still working.
Second, if you psu is working, you need to go to the simpliest setup....1 vid card, 1 hard drive, 1 floppy, 1 stick of ram, etc and see if you can boot...just my 2 cents.

  • NEO4 Plat Sli SIL3231 Raid problem - Can't boot after BIOS Flash!

Hi, I have and Neo4 Platinum SLI. I had "the problem" a while back with the nVida raid where there was a hang on shutdown. I then created a RAID0 using my two Rators on the SIL3132 controller, and have three hitachi drives hooked up to SATA1 - SATA3. Back then, I had trouble getting my SIL3132 array to be the main boot volume. I could boot when no other drives were attached, but as soon as I attached them, I get the boot disk error after post. Somehow I got it to work, but not think this time, I flashed the BIOS and ran into the same problems, as the BIOS got reset.
First, I went in and re-enabled RAID on the sil3132 controller, and change the boot order to have the RAID voluime be the first boot device, and my other drivers be the next on down the line. Upon rebooting, my system hangs after verifying DMI pool at a blanksscreen for 5 - 10 minutes then gives my the "missing HAL.dll error". if I go back into the BIOS and disable SATA1/SATA2 and SATA3/SATA4 my computer boots just fine. I even completley disconnected my three drives an my system boots just fine. I have searched these forums and could not find anything close to my issue and wondered if it is something I am just missing in the setup. I will say that at POST my IDE devices has always read:
    IDE Primary Master [None]
    IDE Secondary Master [None]
IDE Primary Slave (my first DVD/R drive)
IDE Secondary Slave (My second DVD/R drive)
IDE Third Master (a 250gb drive)
IDE Fourth Master (a 250gb drive)
IDE Fifth Master (a 250gb drive)
    IDE Sixth Master [None]
Is this normal? all my hard drives are SATA. the raptors and three SATAII drives.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Since the Nvida raid problem seems to have been fixed (as far as I read) I would like to go back to using the nVidia raid controller. I just need to back up my system first!
    Thanks in advance.

    Jkmet,
I have noted the same problem, with a USB Pen drive.
If I leave it plugged in and shut down, the next time I cold boot it tries to boot for the pen drive.  What I found out the any time you add a drive before booting the BIOS places it at the top of the Hard Drive Priority list making it the boot drive.  Same thing happens when I plug in a new SATA and does not mater where it is connected.  So, what I have to do any time you add a drive with the power off you have to boot to BIOS reset the Hard drive priority list, then save, exit and reboot to boot from you windows drive.
I am sure this is a BIOS Bug, but MSI states that the way it should would work.
    Roger

Possibly, or it could still be a weak psu, short caused by debris or extra standoff, damaged cpu or socket, damaged pcie slot etc.
That's what you should completely remove the mobo count the stand offs and make sure there are no extras or other objects shorting the mobo.
Check device manager and make sure all drivers are installed.
If you can get you hands on a better psu try it, just to be sure.(although if it runs the gpu on the other mobo its probably alright to skip)
Remove and inspect the cpu and socket/ re-seat the cpu
If all that turns up nothing then yes, its probably the board.
Well, I actually decided to try my GPU on my old Mobo, right now is working. I did all of that and of course, installed the chipset drivers, perhaps hoping that it would make the mobo recognize the PCI slot, which didn't happen. Of course I really much appreciate your help, but since all the options above didn't fix the problem, it turns out that I got a defective mobo, which is sad. Just to make myself sure, Im gonna try to get another PSU, but I don't think is gonna make any difference, since my old MB is more demanding than the new one.  You are free to close this thread. Then again, thank you very much for your help.

  • NEO4 Plat/sli and the Active armor/network issues

Ok first of all my computer was running fine with my ethernet pluged into the primary nforce gig lan.  After installing this software it worked for about 5 hours then just cut off my internet.  I then plugged it into the Yukon pci-e gig lan and it worked then.  After uninstalling this software i can no longer get a connection on my Nvidia lan.  it connects but wont send/recieve any packets.  Also windows will not even let me repair my connection without it locking up the network settings.  If anyone can help i will appriecate it.

no yellow marks in device manager the card says its working but i disabled it because it wouldnt work.  i have the newest drivers and the most updated windows xp sp2.

  • Neo4 Plat SLI using SATA Raid cannot install WinXP 32

I recently purchased the neo4 platinum and was quite amazed what all comes with the board. However, I have spent quite a while trying unsuccessfully to get winxp installed. I was previously using a pci rocketraid card to run my 2 maxtor drives as a stripped raid.
Before doing the final shutdown and swap, I went into the rocketraid and deleted the array. Swapped boards (raid card did not follow), plugged in the 2 maxtors into sata ports 1 and 2. Configured nvidia raid bios settings to enable raid on sata ports 1 and 2. Entered nvidia raid bios, and created a stripped raid array with the 2 maxtors. Boot to winxp install, f6 and installed both drivers on included nvidia diskette. When I get to the partition selection, I have nothing but 'Unknown disk' listed several times. If I try to access one of these 'partitions' by either deleting or selecting, the system crashes (blue screen).
So, I deleted the nvidia array, the reinstalled my rocketraid card, and created an array on it. Went through the same install sequence, and am able to see the array as a selectable drive, and am able to install winxp on it. So, I am a bit lost on where to go from here.. I tried searching both here and google and I didnt see anyone with this particular problem. Id really love to get this bad boy running (a good upgrade for me), but it seems I am destined not to.  Please, someone help!

Inside the nvraid rom bios make sure to clear disk data and set raid bootable .
gah, sorry, I should have put that in my original post (did those).
So, a bit of an update... after a bit more futzing around, I have tried multiple times on deleting, recreating (and clearing data) arrays, trying with and without setting to boot. After the 2nd or so array creation, my problem has slightly changed. Now, windows install does not recognize any hdd's present and wont continue.
Out of curiosity, I blasted the array from the nvidia bios, then went into main bios, disabled nvidia raid, and enabled sil raid. Hooked up the drives to sil raid, and created an array. Windows install see's the array, and is currently installing to it. Now, while this may function as a work aorund (if it completes) I think I read somewhere the nvidia raid is not on the pci bus, but the sil raid is (which is why I want to use the nvraid). So, aside from any input or suggestions about resolving the problem I am having, any input on the differences between the two raid setups?
edit- windows successfully installed on the sil raid array, but I still would like a fix for the nvraid

  • MSI Neo4 Plat/SLI missing Creative Audio Enable/Disable in BIOS

Alright I thought I was having some driver issues, but apparently it is a bit more in depth than that. I recently just updated my BIOS thinking I may get a resolution that way but i guess not. I was browsing the large thread about this board and noticed that someone made mention of just disabling the sound in the BIOS and using an external solution. Well there isn't an option in the BIOS. I know where to look...looked there before seeing the thread...I don't have a creative labs audio option in my BIOS. Didn't have one in the original BIOS either...I did spend some time in it before flashing it.
What could be causing it not to show up in the BIOS.
The board has been a bit squirrely...I can't get the onboard 1394 to actually find some available resources...I have seen posts where someone was having the same problem with the PCI Express Bridge (or something to that effect). I would be willing to just pop in another sound card, but I have my suspicions that something worse is going on, and the sound and 1394 are just symptoms of a larger problem.
I have seen the issues of usinga non -5v PS with this board. Although the problems seems to be functionality, not availability as is my case.
Any ideas before I make a phone call to MSI, I would hate to RMA this board as it has all of my condensation measures already in place.

We've had reports of missing bios items b4, they've been the 1394 & gigabit options.
Some have been solved by slackening mobo srews by 1/4 - 1/2 turn, or checking & finding surplus mobo risers which were causing shorts. Bios items missing
After eliminating that think it's get in touch with MSI time - sorry
    luck
