Neo4 Platinum (7125) Northbridge fan options.

My MSI Neo4 Platinum (7125) is a fantastic board except for one irritating issue, the northbridge fan makes way too much noise. It's now the loudest fan in my system. Problem is it sits right below the video card so whatever I get to replace it has to be low profile. I'm looking for a reliable, good performing and quiet replacement for this 7000rpm squeeler. It should have the same or better cooling performance as the original while being and staying quiet.
I looked at the Zalman passive models but they won't fit due to the proximity of the video card. Any suggestions would be very appreciated.

  • K8N Neo4 (MS-7125) northbridge fan replacement?

Hello, all. I have started to build a new system using the K8N Neo4 Ultra (MS-7125) mobo. When installing the mobo yesterday, I noticed for the first time that two of the fan blades for the northbridge had broken off. They were not in the anti-static bag and this was the first time I had the board out. I ordered this on May 25, so I can't return it.
Would it be a good idea to replace the fan?
Any suggestions on what to use for a replacement?
Will I need to take the mobo back out of the case to replace the fan?
    Thanks much.

Should still be under warranty from MSI so you should be able to RMA the board by contacting them

  • Neo4 Platinum SLI NB fan problem.

    Hey there,
My northbridge fan has been acting pretty strange recently, I'm kinda afraid that his death is imminent. The usual RPM that I got on this fan was 7000-7300. Now it starts to drop to something like 6700-6300 and produces a disturbing sound. The reason I find it strange is that im using this mobo for about 6 months only - no idea why the fan is so crappy here. Is this lowered RPM dangerous to my system?? The temps. inside the case usually like 32-35 degrees Celsius, the case has 5 80mm fans.
    Thanks in advance,
    Lorex

This is very common with those little fans. I would never bother with RMA'ing for a simple fan. If you are able to mount a motherboard, and complete assembly to a successeful running system, then you should be qualified to replace the fan. Those fans are normally a sleave bearing and it's the armature that wears out so fast. It's a crapshoot with those darn things. Some last forever, and some just take a dump right away.
Sometimes manufacturers will just send you a new fan rather than bother with an RMA for something that minor. (That is if they are smart) Some (ABIT) wouldn't do anything but take it in for RMA. However, they said I could buy one from an affiliate or replace it on my own and it wouldn't void my warranty. MSI has sent me fans, and fan assemblies for VGA cards in the past, but I did ring them up rather than bother with online forms or e-mail.  I seriously doubt that MSI would void the warranty if you replaced it. Putting arctic silver on might raise a flag if you ever had to RMA for another reason. And for the amount of paste you need to apply in this particular application, arctic silver is a complete waste of material. Standard white thermal paste should do just fine. If you are using something that doesn't have mounting pins then obviously thermal tape will do the trick...
    Good luck
    PS AppleRenegade...
They are glued? That would really suck I am shocked they would resort to something like that...

  • K8N Neo4 Platinum 7125 not posting after overclock testing okay

    Hi Guys,
I'm having a real stinker of a problem with my 7125 board.  I have all good components, but can't seem to get this bastard to post reliably when I'm overclocking.  I was thinking that it was my power supply so I bought a new Antec Neo3 650W supply and it doesn't matter.  I also got a new Opteron 165 processor and it still has problems.  I even RMA'd my board and then sent me a new one.  Here is my setup.
    7125 ver1
    Opty 165
    Crucial PC3200 Ballistix
    Nvidia PCIE Gforce 6200 video
    Antec Neo3 650W
    2x Seagate SATA 80gig (matched) 7200.9
RAID 0 via the SIL 3114
extra 160 gig HD (using the Nvidia SATA port)
Pioneer DVD 109 DVDRW - pri IDE
Sony DRU-820A DVDRW - sec IDE
    Hauppauge PVR150
3.5" card reader (connected via internal usb header)
    Lian Li case
When I run the system at stock speeds everything works fine, including the initial posts.
However, when I overclock, everything is erratic.  Sometimes, I can overclock the entire system to 290x3, 166, stable memory settings, and prime 95 orthos the  out of it for days on end (max CPU at 49C), but when I select restart in windows, it shuts down fine, but will subsequently not post. I have to hit the reset key several times, then it recovers itself and undoes the overclocks.
I have tried all sorts of memory timings from the crucial info - it recommends 2.8V and 2-2-2-8 timings.
I have heard that my memory is good for overclocking, but I'm now starting to wonder if it is the MSI Neo4 board or the Nvidia Nforce 4 ultra chipset.
Could it be the Raid 0 on the Sil 3114?  I haven't messed with this as I would rather have a RAID 0 setup, then a little overclock.
Is there a good NF4 ultra board out there that is better than this?
I can't imagine anything else to do except keep spending more money to eliminate more variables.
    Your thoughts?  Thx Nick

relax your CPU HTT freq. by 10-20Mhz and retest.
relax your memory timings e.g. from 2-2-2-8 to 2.5-3-3-8, to findout from where its comes then find optimal settings.

  • K8 Neo4 Platinum 7125 Bios 1.A fixes things!!!!

I have just updated to Bios 1.A using Live Update in Windows. Everything works and for the first time since I got the board (May 2005) I can now use my logitech wireless keyboard and mouse in USB mode. Previously I could not enter BIOS unless I used PS2 mode for the logitech and in PS2 mode the Enhanced keys did not work in Windows. Now I can get into BIOS and use Enhanced keys. Clearly MSI have fixed the USB keyboard and Mouse not working at DOS or BIOS level. I wonder what else it has fixed?

Quote from: Stick on 19-November-05, 15:36:36
jaybee, liveupdate is basically an automatized winflash. if it is safe to use winflash then why it is not safe to use liveupdate?
Because you dont have any possibility to set options , lke cmos reset ,update dmi ,  update bootblock .
Because you are not in control .
And it's not based on winflash .
Liveupdate download the bios file from the server and run a MSI propriatary executable if windows mode is choosen.
    In my case it's C:\Program Files\Setup Files\MS-7025 v1.B0\cache\MS-7025v1.B0.exe .
In registry this is set to be deleted at next boot (see this with reg. protection : startupmonitor) .
You also see the propriatary MSI executable bios flasher in proccesses in MS task manager when it comes all the way to start flashing in windows mode .
If liveupdate is choosen to flash in dos mode it runs awdfl.exe and we still do not know anything about neccessary switches /wb / cc etc .
It should be proven by now that several updates need bootblock to be updated/reprogrammed .
My guess is that liveupdate "never" flashes/updates bootblock and this cause the problems we see often in special cases going
from a spesific version to another spesific version .
I look at it like this :
Use liveupdate to flash bios is like sitting in a car in the backseet and have no control of whats happening and what descitions are taken in this critical process .
Using awards winflash or awardflash in dos mode to flash the bios sets you in the frontseet behind the wheel giving
you full control over this critical procedure completely and makes you the descitionmaker.

  • K8 neo4 Platinum (7125) loses dual core on restart

Can anyone help. My AMD x2 4400+ is recognised as 2 cpu's on startup. If a restart is performed from Windows (XP sp2) then only 1 cpu shows. If I shutdown and then startup I always get 2 cpu's. Whenever there is a restart when installing software etc ther is only 1 cpu. Very Strange. I am 1.B bios and up to date on all drivers and Windows updates.

  • Perpetual Laggy System Performance (K8N NEO4 PLATINUM) 7125

I was playing COUNTER STRIKE the other day and all the sudden the comp restarted but failed to reboot completely, meaning no post, no nothing but HD light on constant. I started removing all devices from IDE/SATA/PCI slots to see if it would reboot...no dice. I gave it a few more tries and still no luck.  I had to leave so when I came back, I went to troubleshooting again. I plugged in only my crappy low end GF4 card and IDE drives to see if it would and it did I looked through my BIOS to see if anything has faultered, since nothing was changed  I decided to plug my SATA drives in and blam again no boot/post.  I then reset the CMOS settings and wala it worked!    went to change the settings and then XP wouldn't boot up from my SATA drive. I decided to just reinstall everything because I like to start off fresh from fatal crashes. XP finished installing and still it wouldn't boot from SATA drive.  I installed all necessary SCSI/RAID drivers, yes I know it's SATA but it goes under the category of SCSI during initial XP install. I decided to repartition/reformat/reinstall and finally it booted off the SATA drive. after this nonsense was through I thought all was smooth sailing. little did I know I started encountering an annoying enormous speed decrease, every program I tried to load would take 20-50 secs (sometimes longer) to load. so I thought what the hell, I should prolly flash the BIOS. I then flashed to 1.6 and still no dice. I then went through flashing all the 1.7's and still had the same daym problem.  all drivers that I installed are the most recent. I'm now perplexed what to do from here?    has anyone else encountered this problem?
I also have another question, what are average temps for everyone's CPU with the stock AMD HSF?

ok I had to speak too soon. I'm now encountering the daym load lag again but it's not as consistent as it was before. the PSU I tested again today is a FORTRON 530W the specs are as noted... +3.3V@30/17A,+5V@44/24A,[email protected],+12V@16/28A,[email protected],+5VSB@2A. he wouldn't bring his RAM over since he's afraid it'll somehow it up and past it's RMA warranty, it's understandable though. do yall think increasing RAM voltage might possibly alleviate the issue? it's currently set at 2.65 stock. I can test PSU for figures but I don't know how to do so without load unless both the 20 pin and 4 pin connectors can be left out to test? sorry for the vulgarity but I'm starting to get frustrated as all hell.

  • K8N Neo4 Platinum 7125 - Switching from Single to Dual Opti - Startup Issues

    My problem is the following:
I switched from Winchester 3200 single core to Dual Opteron 170.
The BIOS indicates it reading the both cores with the ACPI lingo.
I did patch the driver according to AMD with their specified download.
Now, when I start up the computer, I have to restart several times to get it to run but it does run although later locks up either when not in use or after an hour or so of gaming (mech warrior mercs)  ???
I have checked the power supply voltages and they are as indicated in my profile, but I am wondering if the power
supply is not the problem.  I know opterons' require a little more umph than normal single cores and this one is 4 years
    old.
    What do you folks think?
I would really hate to reinstall windows if it just a power supply issue.
Thanks in advance for you advise.

Reinstalling the operating system seems like awful lot of work if its the power supply.
    But I appreciate the advice.
This rig is about 3 years old.  I will probably wait until I have some time to do this.
What drivers do you think I need to get the USB function again for now?
    Thanks.

Get a decent PSU and re-test 1st, here can be found good PSU suggestions.

Just delete them from device manager, then windows should detect and install them automatically.

  • Neo4 Platinum: No onboard sound

    Hello everybody,
I have two identical PCs with the Neo4 Platinum (7125,1.0) Mainboad with BIOS 1.8 and 4400+ (Toledo) CPU. The powersupply is a 535Watt Enermax.
    Memory is 2 x 1GB Kingston (KVR400X64C3AK2/2G). I use only the PATA.
How can I "Enable" the on board sound? In the BIOS there is only the "Auto" option and something seems to disable the sound.
I see no sound device in the POST screen (PCI resource map) and the Windows' device manager shows no sound or unknown devices.
    Without success I tried
    - pulling all cards but the VGA (MSI GT7800)
    - clearing the CMOS
    - installing different drivers under Windows 2000 SP and Windows XP SP2
    - disabling and reanabling the sound
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

as far as i know it does as i have the 4400+. nice cpu btw.
The BIOS history claims that the E6 Stepping (which is the Toledo) support was added with version 1.8.
So I fear we will loose the second core again.

  • K8N Neo4 Platinum NorthBridge Fan

I've had a K8N platinum motherboard for about a year and a half now and have had lots of problems with the northbridge fan. The first one they included started rattling and went out within about 6 months.  I replaced it with another socket fan, which has recently started making the same noises.  I decided to give up on these fans since they did not last and attached a heatsink.  I booted up my computer however, and discovered that the heatsink is hot to the touch.  I reinstalled windows on my machine and no longer have the diagnostic software which tells me the temperature for my northbridge chipset.  I have heard different accounts for how hot a north bridge chip should be.
Does anyone have any advice?  How hot can the north bridge get without getting fried? Should I leave on the heatsink or replace it with a better ball bearing fan?  Any suggestions for good fans?

    marcus65,
That was one of the issues I had with finding a cooling solution for my motherboard.  I attached an ATI graphics card (x700 i believe) and it does cover the northbridge partially.  I bought a zalman heatsink which was about an inch and a half high and did not fit between the northbridge and the video card.  I had to find a shorter heatsink.  Thanks to everyone that posted suggestions.  I think I will order a ball bearing fan/heatsink for my northbridge.

  • MS-7125 K8N Neo4 Platinum NB fan speed

This is the information I was given by MSI tech support. Even though MSI describes Core Cell's Buzzfree technology as controlling the NB fan speed it only works on certain models and the 7125 is not one of those.

I wish it was buzz free.  My 7125 NB fan buzzes like crazy, I need to find a solution to this annoyance.

  • Once and for all: MS-7125 Neo4 Platinum NB temperature sensing

    Hi guys,
I'm trying to shut my MS-7125 Neo4 Platinum NB fan up.  My XFX 6800GT vid card prevents me from using the blue Zalman passive cooler, unless I bend or remove its fans, which I haven't gotten around to.  So I'm looking for alternatives, one of which is simply undervolting the stock fan, after cleaning the interface between chip and heatsink and applying Arctic Silver 5.
Of course, to make that workable, I need a reliable temperature reading for the Northbridge chip.  Many posters have suggested that "Fan1" in Speedfan is the NB on the MS-7125.  However, I saw one thread (will edit and link it later) that suggested that that reading is actually for the Winbond chip closer to the corner of the board, not the actual NB.  If that's the case, then I don't really know what temp the NB is at, and I don't feel safe undervolting its fan.
So which is it?  Once and for all!
    Thanks in advance!
    best,
    Ryan

g2006, Be careful when interpreting statement given to you by tecnicians.
I know: I had to post a screen cap to convince him that CoreCenter didn't have a NB fan speed control slider. In fact, like many newbies, he thought the nb fan alarm slider was the nb fan speed controller. It's after pointing these stuff that I got the info that there wasn't a temp sensor on the nf4 chip. I kept asking and correcting his misconception until, I assume, when he saw that he didn't know about this particular board, and might have asked the right questions to the source. The later answers were more informed, less conceited; might have been a different person altogether. But of course I might have misassumed (is that a word    )
But as you said, they still recommended to RMA...

try this. 1- Unplug your MSI Fan and see what happens to your SYS/NB temp, your should see a 2-3 deg C increase at idle and aa 6-8 deg C at load.
When I get a way to physically control the speed (rheostat), I'll take time to do lower the speed to see how it affects the speedfan temp for the "sys" monitor.
I'll try to check also were this "system" temp sensor is supposed to be placed, according to some here and there on some forums, and test briefly with a hair blower or something more accurate to check those allegations.
What made me dismiss altogether the "system temp" as being the nf4 temp sensor is some people on boards (here and elsewhere), using the zalman nb47j, reporting that it was getting quite hot to the touch, but with speedfan reporting the sys temp as low (35-40c) nonetheless; but of course this is relying on others, I should test this somehow myself...
    Quote
2- Install speedfan on your computer  and  use its manual fan speed control features to slow or shut down the fan that registers around 5200 - 5400 rpm.
I do use speedfan. The 7125 nf4 fan registers around 7300rpm ( ) on speedfan and corecenter.
Both speedfan and corecenter can monitor and modify cpu fan speed.
In fact, in the Manual itself, p. 2-16 (about the connectors) it says explicitely that the CPUFAN1 supports fan control; it doesn't mention this capacity for the other connectors, which is a good indicator that only CPUFAN1 has it.
NF4 fan is connected to NBFAN1 connector; I have another fan connected to SFAN1 connector, which also has a speed sensor according to the manual; but again, no impact on fan speed using speedfan... and none promised, if one reads the manual: only the CPU fan is actually said to be speed controllable.
    Quote
Do you have Cool & Quiet activated?
CnQ is CPU centered, at least reading from the manual. I don't know about the Neo2 that you have, maybe you have more options on this, but the manual for 7125 is explicit on this (p. 3-26, for those who have the manual).
I also would like others' views/experiences on this.

  • K8N Neo4 Platinum - fan replacement

I have a 2 month old K8N Ne04 Platinum edition (not SLI) motherboard.  At first the system was dead quiet, however the NForce4 Ultra's stock fan has become increasingly loud over the last week, to the point where I can no longer hear myself think.
Can a new fan be ordered and attached to the existing heatsink, or does the whole unit need to be replaced?  I have no idea what 3rd party part would be compatible, any pointers would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks!

Hello there, I too had the same problem after 1 month of having the K8N Neo4 Platinum Motherboard.  All was well and silent then all of a sudden the NORTHBRIDGE fan started clattering and getting very loud to which was very disturbing.
The only way around this is completely taking out the "MSI" provided NORTHRBIDGE fan by removing the motherboard from the case and pressing on the clips on back of the board that hold the fan and then popping in a new NORTHBRIDGE fan/cooler.  I found a great replacement for the cheapie MSI provided fan in the "VANTEC CCB-A1C Ball VGA COOLER" which is all copper based and purchased from www.newegg.com for under 15 US dollars shipped.
Below is the picture of what the fan I recommend looks like...
I have since been using the "VANTEC ICEBERG COPPER COOLER" and the NForce4 chipset has been running very-very cool and was a perfect fit!
    Take care, Ice!
