Neo4 Platinum Boot CD ERROR HELP

First post!
I have had my MSI (7125) for over a year and I can't get most boot CD's to work properly.  I can get them to boot but not load whatever it is I choose in there given options.  Example: I can't get anything to load in Hiren's BootCD ver. 7/8.  Say if I choose the Mini Win98, it just sends back errors, invalid drive letter.
I think i know the problem but can't figure out a solution.  The mobo can't create a RAM drive and read from it.  Maybe some kind of lock on it?  I have looked around on many forums, and in some of the sticky's on here.
The weird thing is that I bought another one of these boards, a few days ago and it does the same exact thing.
I can load default BIOS settings, I tried the Boot OS/2 option in the BIOS.  Some Linux distros do work.  I need old school boot disks.  The CD works perfect on my HP ZD8215US Laptop (Intel P4 2.8)
Specs:
MSI (7125) Neo4 Platinum
BIOS: 1B0 (on both mobos) came stock on the new one
AMD64 3200+ Venice
2 Gigs of RAM (4x 512MB's) 2 different sets
420 or 480 PSU can't remember which
Maxtor DiamondMax 10 300 Gig S-ATA
Creative X-FI Platinum
Logitech LX700 Cordless keyboard only USB plugged in (for both keyboard/mouse)
NO USB devices plugged in besides keyboard/mouse
...I have a LOT more hardware but its just the HD, floppy & two DVD burners that I have connected for the new mobo so far.
I haven't tried Murdok's 1C7 BIOS yet.  I even tried disabling all of my IDE/SATA controllers and still no go.
I mean...I have stripped it down with less components connected.  Could only be the mobo/ram/dvd

Thanks for the reply.
I disabled almost every setting in the BIOS, especially everything in the Integrated screen except only for the ATA controller I was using.  I tried a different ATA cable (both round).  I took out the other 3 sticks of memory so just 1x 512 MB DDR.  I took the DVD burner out and stuck it in my g/f's computer, Gigabyte nForce 2 AlthonXP 3200+ and it works perfect booting into the BootCD with the same options selected.
But looking at the errors, it just looks like it can't read the ram drive.
I'm getting an adapter for my IDE HDD's that converts them into S-ATA tomorrow, so i'll took one of the adapters up to the DVD burners and see if that sheds any light on this problem.
With this board I only have 2 ATA connectors, tried both.
Maybe its an 64-bit issue.  I tried the UBCD 3.4 and that one worked on a few things.
Maybe I can play around with the ramdisk creator program and see if there isn't some settings then figure out the problem with the Hiren guy.  I haven't heard either way if this BootCD will work with Nforce 4 Ultra and the MSI 7125 Neo4 Platinum.

  • Neo4 Platinum - Booting 2 SATA 3.0 drives in RAID 0

I know I'm new to this forum, but I've actually been searching for hours on this subject just today hehe.
Anyway, from what the manual is saying for the K8N Neo4 Platinum motherboard, you have to use the Silicon RAID controller in order to create a bootable RAID array.  Is this true?
If not, then is it possible to create a bootable RAID array using the nvRAID controller?
The reason I ask is I would like to take advantage of the new SATA 3.0 drives.  Obviously, according to the manual, the Silicon controller only supports SATA 1.5 speeds.  It would be pointless to purchase SATA 3.0 drives if I was forced to use the Silicon controller for RAID booting, because the overall speeds would be reduced as if they were 1.5 drives.
So, can I create a bootable RAID array using the nvRAID controller and will the drives be recognized properly as SATA 3.0?
Thanks for you help.  I hope it's not too much of a bother.

    Thedog,
Sorry, to bring bad new, with K8N Neo4 Platinum motherboard you have to define  what the features of a SATA II drive has before you say that you can create and use a RAID 0 array on the nVidia nForce4 Chipset.   If the SATA II drive has both 3Gb/s speed and NCQ the current drivers list on MSI Download page, unless they upgrade them today, will not produce a functional RAID 0 Bootable Array.
Many have said that they had SATA II RAID Arrays running on the Noe4 motherboard, but each when they sent me their drive part number provide not be to SATA V2.5 drives, that’s the latest version with all the new features.   SATA II with 3Gb/s speed and no NCQ will work fine.
I have been working with MSI Support for over a month now, testing pre-beta BIOS and Pre-Beta Drives.  Both the BIOS and RAID Controller drives have problem.  The BIOS V1.B and a yet unreleased pre-beta drive will get you a functional RAID 0 running Windows XP Pro 32-bit Edition.  There is no driver for Win XP PRO 64 Edition.
If you are, bond and determined the use the newest SATA II that include all the new features.  I have a copy of the pre-beta 32-bit Windows RAID drivers MSI sent me for testing, that I will send you, just send me a Personal Message with you E-mail address in it and I will send the drives zip file to you.
I will more than likely get more people saying they have SATA II RAID Arrays running, but there is not one, I have not been able to prove wrong.   ASUS and MSI have the same problems and to date both have failed to produce, because the problem I nVidia’s problem.

  • K8N Neo4 Platinum Wont POST please help!!

ok, i built this pc about a month ago. everything has worked perfectly until yesterday. When i turn the power on, al i get is the Platinum Screen. I cant go into Bios, i cant Post.. The PC beeps once like normal, and the LED on the Motherboard and the videocard come on. Ive tried wiping the CMOS, Tried a different PSU, tried removing one of the memory sticks. I tried just connecting the Mobo, video card and harddrive, to see if it want getting enough power. Heres what ive got:
    K8N Neo4 Platinum/SLI
    Athlon 64 3500+
    Geforce 6800 Gt
    1 Gig corsair 3200 ram (2x512mb)
    550 watt PSU

reset the bios, make sure its RESET.
then, try with just 1 stick ram first.
remember, to run dual for this board, it has to be Slot 1  &  Slot 2.
If u follow the color, it'll be single channel instead.
Read also the instruction, it says never plug into 2nd or 4th slot with 1 stick ram.
Try with 1 stick ram. if it boots, then insert the 2nd into Slot 2.  for dual channel.
i had similar prob few days back when newly purchased.
    good luck !

  • K8N Neo4 Platinum boots only with CMOS reset

This is my first build (and perhaps my last). The system ran without error for two weeks but the BIOS recognized only 2.88 GB rather than the 4 GB which are in the DIMM slots. I removed the power cord, put on an anti-static strap and reseated two of the 1 GB sticks. Since that time it will not boot without a CMOS reset. (But the BIOS recognizes 3.9 GB on most of my boots. On my last one, it was back to 2.88 GB).
    Here's my booting process:
Remove power cord and switch PSU off.
Put on wrist strap and depress CMOS reset button on board for ten seconds.
Insert power cord and switch PSU on.
At this point the system boots normally without my depressing the normal power switch at the front of the case! And it runs without error once it boots.
I can reboot the system from the operating system without problems. When I shutdown (power off), depressing the normal power switch has no effect and I have to boot with the CMOS reset process above.
Memtest86 shows no memory errors. A similar thread with Neo2's suggested setting ht = 4x but that didn't help in my case. I also let the BIOS load optimized defaults but that didn't fix things either. I'm open to whatever suggestions you can make! (If my signature with my system configuration doesn't appear, I'll post it in a followup.)

Looks like a Memory/Motherboard problem but I've never heard of it before or a low powered power supply could stop it recognising the 4GB so may be worth borrowing a more powerful one to test and see.. all out of ideas on this now
You were right. I borrowed a Rosewill RE501-BLK 3.3v@28a, 5v@30a, 12v@34a, 500W and now I don't have to reset the CMOS to boot! The case power switch still doesn't work--I have to turn off the PSU and turn it on again to boot--but others in this thread have suggested improper wiring of the switch which I'll check out. But I certainly can live with this since the PSU power switch is at least external to the case (as opposed to the CMOS reset switch). Now I'll go to the PSU thread to pick out a new PSU.
The BIOS on repeated boots recognizes the memory as about 3.7 GB (and Linux at about 3.4 GB, but I suppose that there are "good" reasons that OS's give a different number than BIOS's) and I can live with that, also, since, in an earlier post in this thread, I quoted MSI's "warning" that I could only expect 3+ GB to be recognized by the BIOS if I filled all 4 DIMMs with 1 GB sticks. But I think my 1.52beta MS-7125 BIOS also contributed to this increase. (My v. 1.3 BIOS recognized only 2.88 GB.)
I'm happy and thank all who contributed suggestions to this thread. Now I need to configure the software, a task that I know at least something about.

  • Windows 7 burned iso disc, boot camp error help!

    Hello,
I am looking for some help while trying to bootcamp partition 85 gig for Windows 7 64bit on my Late 2009 Imac OS X 10.8.4. Using Bootcamp 5.0.3.
I downloaded a student copy iso of windows 7 64 bit from school and burned the image using disc utility to a DVD. (side note didnt bother renaming disc just burned the image)
While trying to "Create a Partition for Windows" and distributing 85 gig. It says that it cannot partition my drive.
The Windows disc I am using was burned using disc utility at normal speed using this file: "en_windows_7_professional_x64_dvd_x15-65805.iso" to the disc.
I am not sure if i am partitioning properly or that there is a disc or file error with the iso I am using... or the way i processed the file...or a better way to format the iso in order to bootcamp install windows 7 on my machine.
Any pointers help or knowledge in this area would be extremely helpful.
    Thanks!

I had that error message to, fixed it.
What you do is get idefrag, burn it to a disk with a program from them, then start up on it, defrag HD, this can be dangerous though i heard, what i did was let it run for the first bit until some certain files were defraged (they were some special stuff and had a diferant part to it), then i used bootcamp assistant again, but i only partitioned 15 gigs, maybe try partitioning less.
All you really need is enough space to install windows and a little more for updates ect. then you can use a program so you can access your HD from windows partition, so you can share your files, and you can install games and stuff on your HD instead of on the partitioned space.
MacDrive 7 will allow you to do that, just get it, and install the update right away cause it wont work till you install it, and be sure to put in your leopard DVD and install the apple drivers, they are very necessary!
hope this helps, i know how you feel, it took me so long to finally get it top work and i wanted it so much.

  • Please Help K8N Neo4 Platinum won't boot?

    Hello,
I could use your expertise in this matter. I have built several systems and never seen this before. My system will not boot with the hard drive
and/or DVD drive attached. It will boot with just the 1.44 floppy attached. My system is as follows:
MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum ATX AMD Motherboard
    connect3D 3038 Radeon X800GTO 256MB 256-bit GDDR3 VIVO PCI Express x16 Video Card
    Rosewill RV500S-2 500W Power Supply 500W ATX 2.01
                +3.3v- 30A
                +5V  - 45a
               +12V1 - 18a
               +12V2 - 16a
    AMD Athlon 64 3000+ 1GHz FSB Socket 939 Processor
CORSAIR ValueSelect 1GB (2 x 512MB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM Dual Channel Kit System Memory
            Cas Latency 2.5
            Voltage 2.5V
            Unbuffered
Windows XP professtional Service Pack 2
I tried resetting CMOS, changing the cmos battery, re-setting the video card, moving memory modules (from positions 1&2 to 3&4). The power supply is working. When I put my hard drive into another system it boots perfectly. Please help!
    Thanks
    Tony

All that info and I still don't know where you are plugging them in.     SATA or IDE(PATA)? Both?
Can you describe the not booting a little more?  i.e.  No video at all, you see POST but it doesn't complete, POST completes but you can't boot an OS.

I check RAM was not it.. re-connected.. was not it.. new SATA cables.. no idea any help would do.. getting impatient and tired =O must get it up tonight!

Don't know if you or many people have seen this it's appeared over the last few days K8N Neo4 Platinum  -  NOTE: NVIDIA nForce 3/4 Series board DO NOT support Windows® 98/ME
There are people running 98 but my own understanding was that 98 could only use a sata drive as a data drive & could not be installed on a sata drive. Where have you installed it ???

  • BSOD's on my x64 K8N Neo4 Platinum based PC, Any ideas what's wrong? Help!

Over the past few month I've been getting BSOD's. There is no real pattern to their occurence and it's not something which is constantly happening (It happened around 5 times in the past 2 months), but I've really grown to hate them. You see, after getting one what has happened in the past is that when I go to restart my pc after getting a BSOD, I find I need to re-install my whole OS! What happens is that after booting (which oddly enough doesn't work well after a BSOD, It freezes on the boot screen and I need to restart several times), a black screen appears telling me that certain files in the C:Windows\ direcotory are corrupt or missing.
So the real problem is that the BSOD's cause me to re-install my whole OS. One will happen, then it will be ok, I turn the system on, log into windows, then it might happen again, after which I'll need to re-install. The files that go missing are always different too, and when I run scan-disk (after plugging in my main drive into another computer) it finds corrupt files and deletes them.
At first I thought it was Azureus (p2p client) which was causing the problems because it seemed to happen when I was runing that. I stopped using it, and the BSOD's still occured...sometimes randomly when browsing...etc. I figured that since files got deleted and corrpupted, it must be a problem withthe Hard Drive....So I bought a new one, and I've still had the BSOD error (although files haven't been deleted yet).
So yeah, I really need to solve this problem as it is taking away from my productivity and causing me to re-install far too often. I will post the BSOD info as well as my system info below (and a screen shot):

I looked that up on the net, and it seems the first part seems to indicate, or at least COULD indicate overheating. I checked CPU and System temps and they seem acceptable.
I am running Windows XP x64 Edition with the following hardware (please note that all of the hardware drivers I'm using are written for x64, MSI is so good:)). I have had this PC before it started having these problems, it could be related to using x64 I guess, but the error doesn't show that does it?

My OS and drivers are fully updated. As for my BIOS I've been running the version I'm using now forquite some time and I believe it is version 1.5. Also in another bad turn of events, my northbridge fan seems to be on its way out of this world (this just happned so I don't think its related to the BSOD). I haven't been able to find a replacement, and since its not spinning very fast, and sometimes stops...It's causing the heatsink to get quite hot. I need to get a new one, and I can't find them anywhere...I wonder if thats covered under warranty... I looked into getting a different heatsink, but my Graphics card is so colse to this heatsink, that theres no room for a bigger one at all.
Do you think this problem is motherboard related, I cannot understand what the technical info the BSOD gives me means, can anybody understand it? I don't think its my HD's, or Ram, or CPU...could it be a motherboard problem? And if so, its under 1 year old, can I get an RMA?
Thanks for the help in advance.

At one time I had a weak 450w psu that had only 18a on the 12v rail.  When I overclocked my cpu and gpu, I was getting bsod's every once in a while and couldnt figure it out until I read a similar post like yours on this forum.  I decided to upgrade my psu and havent had that problem since.
Power supplies can be deceiving.  I now have a 480w psu but its has 30a on the 12v rail.  So what we need to know is the ratings of your psu (see my sig) just to see if your psu is the culprit.  Just my 2 cents.

  • K8n neo4 platinum recognized HDD, no boot

there are two sata hard drives in this system, the main drive (which is connected sata1) houses the operating system while the drive plugged into sata2 is a large storage drive. bios recognizes both of these drives, and my boot sequence is floppy-hdd-cdrom with the hdd sequence being maindrive-storage drive. for some reason whenever i attempt to boot it goes through post fine but before it begins loading windows i get "boot from cd:" followed by "disk boot failure, insert system disk and press enter."
i have already made sure that the settings in bios are proper, any help would be appreciated seeing as msi's support request form seems to have an error in the page.
    for the record:
    k8n neo4 platinum
    (2) 1gb pc3200 Corsair memory
    Ati x1650pro
    80gb sata hdd
    120gb sata hdd
    generic cd burner/dvdrom/floppy

If you change ur MB whitout formatin' C:// You wont be able to starwindows normally  , that msg is normal and restartin too if you're using the same partition onto another MB, you've two options 1st_> backup data from "main HD" to "second HD" and format the first HD or reinstall windows on main partition, for that-> insert win xp boot CD, set up bios from booting from CD DRIVE and then when blue installation screen shows several options select "fix previous Windows xp installation" and that's... The only bad thing of that is that you might also reinstall some programs and thirt party software and you'll spend a lot of space (and performance) in "Temporaly files" from the old previous OS installation, I recommend u choose FORMAT ur main HD, Good luck

  • New Drives - boot Neo4 Platinum from SATA II?

I am going to re-configure my AMD 64 3200+ K8N Neo4 Platinum mobo to have 2 Hitachi T7K250 SATA II hard drives (currently PC has a single IDE drive that will be removed).  I have XP PRO original as well as SP2 on a separate disc. Can anyone suggest a course of action here?  Any experience with booting from SATA II?  I guess I could leave the IDE drive in place simply to hold the OS and put the 2 SATA II drives in for data.

Quote from: Kaplan on 28-June-05, 01:30:10
Those drives "will be" SATA I until you download an utility from the Hitachi website. So they have to be manually configured to be SATA II.
OIC, I am running a T7K250 250GB Sata II Hiitachi as boot drive now. Hardware manager show it is set at Sata I 1.5
    If I manually configured it with the Hitachi utility,i.e. boot from DOS as instructed in the website;
    Hitachi web site does not say it must be configure before fresh installation of OS or it can be configure when OS is already installed on the drive;
Neither does Hitachi say any thing about configuring a OS installed drive.
Any effect with my installed Windows XP Pro on the HDD?
Willl it be able to boot again? Please help & advise, thanks!!!
By the way I am using MSI K8N Platinum SLi mobo.

Change your user config mode in dram configuration to manual and change your memory timing to 1T.  The 1T setting will speed up your memory slightly.

I have tried 3 different PS/2 keyboards(2 older and 1 newer) and none of them work. It shows the Platinum screen and then goes to a different screen that says "Keyboard error or not plugged in"
So I try my USB keyboard that I got about a year ago and the lights flash on the kb when I first start up but.....once I get to the Platinum screen the keyboard becomes unresponsive and I cant move off the Platinum Screen into BIOS or anything.
    PLEASE HELP!

Well I went out and purchased a USB to PS/2 adapter and plugged it in with the USB keyboard that would light up but still not work and......................... STILL DID NOT WORK!
Im going on 2 weeks now with no Counter-Strike:Source and im goin nuts

Grimster i agree totaly with jeanguy, you need around 25-30amps min on these boards, so try a mates psu.
Do I really need more than 18a with my system? How much money (ballpark) in US dollars do you think a adequate PSU for my rig would cost???
I am really thinking of just takeing it back and getting it replaced with the same mobo and see if that works.

  • HELP! Installation of SATA HD on K8N NEO4 PLATINUM

I finally put together my system
    AMD Athlon 64 3200+ venice
    MSI K8N NEO4 Platinum
    1 GB DDR400 RAM
    Etc....
now my problem has to do with the SATA hard drive i bought for it, a maxtor diamondmax10 6L080MO, my system will boot and say "invalid drive" and will tell me to go into the RAID Tool.
I really dont know much about sata interface setup so i would appreciate a step by step walkthru on it, right know im forced to use my old reliable maxtor 20gb,
is it possible to have both the 20gb ata hd and the new 80gb sata drives? how do i install my sata drive?
i was planning on using the small one for software installation and the big sata one for storage
everything on my system is running well so far, except for the SATA drive problem,
    PLEASE HELP!

    Ceckardt,
You should not need to install any special drives with single SATA that not in a RIAD Array, if you have Windows XP SP2 installed, if you do not have SP2 installed, upgraded to it before doing anything I instruct you to do below.
If you using just SATA hard drive, all you should have to do is plug it in to one of the nVidia SATA connectors on the motherboard and if you have Windows up and running on the old 20GB Maxtor.  Start windows and open the Disk Management Window.  You get there by right clicking My Computer, menu will pop-up and left click “Manage” a Window will open and on the list on the left side of the call Computer Management, left click “Disk Management”.  On the right of the Window you should see all of you drive of you system including you new 80GB SATA drive.  You will have to Partition and format it, then it will show in My Computer as logical drive, the drive letter you will have assigned in the Disk Management.
If you need instructions, other the Windows Help to partition and format your drive under the disk manager, just reply or if the drive is list in the disk manage window and you cannot figure out how to partition and format the just start a new post asking for help using the Disk Manager.
If the drive is not listed in the Disk management Window, reply in the post for more help.
    Good luck,
    Roger

  • K8N NEO4 Platinum cold boot problem with 165 opteron?

I have this board and have a cold boot problem with my opteron. Is there anything I can do to fix this? Its starting to get very anooying.
    K8N NEO4 Platinum
    165 opty dual core
    2X1GB Ballistix PC4000
    160GB sata2
    7800GTX
    X-Fi platinum
    600 watt seasonic PSU

Well I am running them at the rated speed of 250 and the rated timings of 3-4-4-10 on the rated 2.8 volts. Ballistix have been known to die quickly when you throw to many volts at them for some reason. I dont get the cold boot problem with the OCZ. Once I finally get it to boot with the Ballistix it works just fine but the next morning I play hell to get it to boot again. I dont even get the main screen to let me get into bios. It just stays black. I have done all kinds of stress testing and ran memtest with no problems. I am really at a loss here.

  • Neo4 Platinum Board, boot issue, cannot get past first screen

I've spent some time looking through the forum to see if anyone had a solution to the problem I am about to describe and did not find one.
    Here is the issue:
Whenever any USB device (1.1 or 2.0) is hooked up to any one of the four onboard USB ports all I get is the initial logo screen and the computer never moves on. I have tested hooking up a USB Keyboard, USB Mouse, enclosures, pen drives, etc. As long as there is a usb device in an onboard USB port the computer will not move past the initial logo screen. If there are no USB devices plugged into the onobard USB ports then the system will go all the way through with the boot and get into windows. Once within Windows the four onboard USB ports work fine. You can plug devices in and they are recognized. If there is already a solution to this issue I apologize for posting this and please point me in the right direction.
    Thanks to anyone who replies

Did you use the USB ports on the motherboard, or did you use any USB port attached to the motherboards extra connectors? if the latter, it suggests that you have some faulty wiring of the USB cables. Check so that the connectors of the USB ports are correct with their signals according to the pin layout.
Faulty wired USB will cause the problem you describe.
Also check that you have not damaged the USB port. I have seen some computers where the plastic pin in the USB port has been broken of, and the connectors have been grounded. One example was a computer where the 5VSB was bent, grounding it, resulting in that the motherboard did not recognise any PS2 or USB keyboards.
Third, if the devices you attach draw to much amphere through the USB, it may cause these problems. You might need a powered USB hub.
Fourth, make sure your powersupply is powerful enough if you have many USB devices.
