NeoF hdd performance

Hi all,
I have done a hd tach test yesterday.
I have a WD2500KS hdd pluged to ICH8 port.
The average if 65MB/s and the peak is 163MB/s for the burst.
I would like to know if this is a normal performance of not ?
I have a fresh windows XP install and inf and jmicron driver installed. I have test the jmicron port and ich8 port. I have barely the same performance.
I have test a similar setup but with  an asus p5B board with the same cpu, and i get 72MB/s and a peak burst of 175MB/s
regards
Jonathan

Please list FULL system specs first!
There are many boards that have the letters "Neo-F" in their marketing name.  Which one do you have?
--> http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=prodpage2&maincat_no=1&cat2_no=170
Most of the boards in that list whose name includes "Neo" are actually NEO-F-Boards.  The best thing is you have a look at the mainboard itself and look for model name and PCB Version:
Example:
Marketing Name:  MSI P965 Neo(-F)
Model Name MS-7235
PCB-Version: v1.x

  • Mac OS 8 won't boot from HDD - Performa 630

    Hiya again,
    I'm working on a Performa 630 for a friend and trying to reinstall the OS to mac a better system, I've already upgraded the RAM with a 32MB stick to make 36MB and have given it a 20GB HDD. I've tried to install Mac OS 8 to the HDD and can complete the installer, however on reboot the system shows the happy mac icon for a quick second before the screen goes white and restarts and shows the ? floppy icon. I haven't a clue why it's doing this as it's supposed to support OS8 and the specs are adequete and I am formatting it to the Mac OS Standard (HFS) file system so I'm at a loss.
    Any help greatly apprieciated, thanks.
    Edit: Oh, and when booting back into the installer CD, it says it's rebuilding the desktop on the HDD, just if this makes a difference.

    Are you using the retail/universal installer OS 8 disk (white with large "8" across the face of it) or are you using another model Mac's Restore disk?  If it's a Restore disk, that can cause problems because they have a model-specific OS build that doesn't necessarily support other models.  If you used the retail/universal OS 8 installer disk, did you use the included version of Drive Setup 1.3 to format the hard drive?  If you did, that's the first thing that you should correct.  That version of Drive Setup had a bug in it, and many years ago, Apple sent out "Drive Setup 1.3.1" CDs to customers upon request.  You should download Drive Setup 1.6.1 and copy it to a floppy disk.  It is a compressed file, so you'll need Stuffit Expander to expand it.  Once expanded, you'll have a self-mounting image file that you can double-click.  Drag the disk image icon to your floppy disk to copy Drive Setup to it.  When the Performa is booted to the installer CD, insert the floppy disk and run Drive Setup.  Do not choose to format the hard drive, but choose the "Update Disk Driver" option (I think it's listed under the "Functions" drop-down menu at the top of the screen).  After updating the disk driver, try rebooting the Performa from the internal HDD.  If you still have problems, you may need to reinstall the OS 8.  If you do, you should uncheck the "Update Disk Driver" option, so that the newer disk driver isn't replaced with the older version.

  • Portege R200 - HDD performance very poor

    Hello,
    i have a problem with the HDD (Toshiba MK6006GAH 60 GB) performance, because HD Tune Pro reports me:
    Tranfer Rate: Minimum: 1.6 MB/s Maximum: 2.2 MB/s Average: 2.2 MB/s
    Access Time: 20.7 ms Burst Rate: 2.2 MB/s
    I have checked the power options, but the HDD is running all the time.
    An error scan shows everything in green, so no problem on the disk. S.M.A.R.T. shows all counters are ok, the health status is reported overall as ok.
    HD Tune reports UDMA Mode 5 is active.
    Operating system is Windows XP SP3 all patches installed, 1.24 GB of RAM.
    Any idea what is wrong?
    Regards

    Hi
    Its a 1,8 IDE (Ultra ATA/DMA-100) 60 GB; 4200 rpm with 2MB cache HDD.
    The Ultra DMA/100 (also called Ultra DMA mode 5 or Ultra-ATA100) allows drives to theoretically reach throughputs of 100 Mb/s.
    But this is only a theoretical value!
    However, if you want you can check the HDD using software called HDD Drive Fitness Test.
    You can also buy another HDD in order to test the performance.

  • A1283 Mac Mini second HDD performance poor?

    Hi,
    I'm using a A1283 Mac Mini (the last type before the unibody model) to play audio in a theatre show. I've replaced the internal optical drive with a 500GB 7200RPM SATA drive on which all the audio files are located. I'm hearing audio breakup which suggests that audio is not being provided from disk fast enough, although there are no console errors to suggest problems. At most of there are around 14 stereo audio files (24bit, 44.1k) in use; not a particularly heavy load.
    Is there a difference in performance between the 'upper' (ex-optical drive bay) and 'lower' (factory HDD) drive bays in the Mac Mini? Do I need to make any OS changes to make full performance use of the second HDD?
    Some additional details: 8GB RAM, OS X 10.6.2. The audio app is QLab v2.3.5, and audio is routed through an RME FireFace800 (firmware v2.77) using v2.9.3 driver.
    Many thanks,
    Matt

    Hi dschnepp,
    Thanks for the pointer. I looked at the negotiated link speed on System Profiler. However even allowing for slow interface speeds I'm still confused:
    SATA I rates at 1.5Gbit/s, which is (very) roughly 187MByte/s transfer rate. I'm playing a maximum of 14 audio files which are all stereo 24bit 44.1k. I calculate that to need about 3.7MByte/s transfer, ie a factor of 50 less than SATA I's transfer rate!

  • Extremely slow HDD performance on Acer 7551

    Has anyone else experienced slow performance on their laptop (I wouldn't think this is specific to the Acer but I suppose its possible) where it takes at least 2 seconds or more for the command to seem to be executed? The login prompt is an obvious first example for me (via the command prompt not a DM) where after I enter my username the Password prompt wont appear for about 2-3 seconds and then even after the password being entered the bash prompt wont appear for another 2-3 seconds.  The HDD light is active/blinking during these pauses too so its like its seeking for something on the other end of the drive.
    Its a standard laptop HDD speed (5400 RPM) but I wouldn't think this would make the hiccups occur.  I never noticed this before in other installations such as Fedora and Ubuntu.
    Is it possible that its my partition schema? It is as follows:
    sda1 --> /boot
    sda2 --> /
    sda3 --> /var
    sda5 --> /swap (logical)
    sda6 --> /home (logical)
    sda7 --> /tmp (logical)
    I have also tried the standard recommended:
    sda1 --> /root
    sda2 --> /var
    sda3 --> /swap
    sda5 --> /home (logical)
    and still the issue remains.  Is it really just my HDD?

    t3kka wrote:Reading around on some other threads I found regarding a slow login to tty I noticed some folks state that a large root partition could be the problem.  My HDD is 500GB with the root, var, swap, and home partitions being ~80GB, ~20GB, ~6GB, and then the remainder as in home (respectively).  Maybe having a large root partition along with the location of the home partition makes the HDD head travel a much further distance which is physically equated to a delay in login and other actions.  With such a large HDD, what would you recommend for partition schemes?
    I have a 640 gb 5400rpm drive, and I've installed arch with only a huge root partition on it in the past, and had no speed issues (currently I have a 40gb root and a ~595gb home and a 5 gig swap).

  • Extremely Poor Pacman/HDD Performance

    This is a problem I have been having for a while now.
    After about a month after a clean Arch install, Pacman's performance, and the performance of the OS itself, severely degrades to the point of operations that took seconds taking minutes.
    After a fresh install, Pacman would take about 10 seconds or so to display any matches to a search I preform.  The computer now starts accessing the HDD for about 5 or 6 minutes per search, and so intensively that the rest of the computer comes to a halt while Pacman is doing it's job.
    This HDD activity that completely chokes the computer is becoming more apparent in other operations as well.  Firefox (which is an enormous memory hog, I know) will kill the machine.  Even opening an xterminal can take about 6 or 7 seconds after some intense HDD activity.
    The computer is old, a 10GB HDD, 64MB of RAM, and a 1Ghz processor, but I don't think it should be having such a hard time with the hard disk activity as it is.  I run xorg7 and openbox.  The only other graphical elements on that are a wallpaper and a simple panel program.  There aren't many daemons running besides your run-of the-mill stuff like syslog and dbus.
    I've already taken the steps in the "improving pacman's performance" article on the wiki page, but no dice.  Can anyone help?

    The dmesg you posted is a common problem with IDE devices in the latest kernels due to the lack of recognition 0f the 80-wire cable for UDMA.  The normal use of 80-wire cables in IDE was to accomodate faster transfers and as such was a weak workaround for crosstalk problems.
    In present kernels, the 80-wire system is not recognized therefore the speed of performance is degraded to UDMA 2.
    See the following URL for a kernel patch force for 80-wire:\\
        http://pixca.net/2008/02/03/limited-to-udma33-due -to-40-wire-cable/
    The results of the install to kernel are presented, but no verifiable reports have been given for the patch from other users.  Two answers by the same poster give no confidence in whether he loaded the kernel fix since his dmesg makes no reference to the 80-wire libata changes as does the original posted data.
    This seems to affect every IDE interface in different ways and is based on not requiring 80-wire confirmation in scsi/sata since it is different than IDE interface and controller.
    This may be causing your slowdowns.....give it a second look..

  • 875P HDD Performance w/Promise controller

    I performed 3 tests on my FIS2R motherboard with the drives connected to the ICH5R controller and the Promise controller in various combinations. The ICH5R controller supports drives up to ATA 100 speeds, and the Promise controller supports drives up to ATA133 speeds (for parallel drives). HDD1 is a ATA100/7200RPM drive, and HDD2 is a ATA133/7200RPM drive.
    I used both HD Tach v2.61 and Aida32 v3.61 for these tests. Both gave me similar results, so I'm posting only the results that I got from Aida in the quick linear mode.
    Configuration 1:
          HDD1: ICH5R - 30.4 MB/s
          HDD2: ICH5R - 38.7 MB/s
    Configuration 2:
          HDD1: ICH5R - 30.5 MB/s
          HDD2: Promise - 38.8 MB/s
    Configuration 3:
          HDD1: Promise - 30.4 MB/s
          HDD2: Promise - 38.7 MB/s
    When both drives were connected to the ICH5R controller (configuration 1), Aida confirmed that both HDDs were running at ATA100. This is what I would expect, but why is HDD2's benchmark 30% higher if they are both running at ATA100?
    When HDD1 was connected to ICH5R and HDD2 was connected to Promise (configuration 2), both POST on bootup and Aida confirmed that HDD2 was running at ATA133. HDD1 was at ATA100. This is what I would expect, but why don't I see an improvement in the benchmark for HDD2?
    When both drives were connected to the Promise controller (configuration 3), POST on bootup and Aida said HDD2 was running at ATA100. Why doesn't HDD2 run in the ATA133 mode? Is it because the Promise controller chooses the slower of the 2 drives as it's maximum rate?
    Can anyone explain what's going on here?
    Also, under Device Manager, I noticed that the Promise controller is identified as a SCSI device. I assume that this is normal.

    There could be about a thousand reasons why it's slower - slower write time on the WD, drive fragmentation, going across buses over PCI, some other program was aceesing one or both drives at the same time, the stars in the sky were aligned improperly , etc...  Oh, and transferring a large file across paritions is ALWAYS slower than it is from drive to drive, you only have one read/write head working on a single drive, while you have 2 working when you go between 2 drives.
     I also try to copy from partition to partition in my HItachi and speed also is very fast .
    Now it is weird that changing the IDE channel is making both drives go into DMA 5 vs. one going to PIO....have you tried different cables?
     I try 3 different cables and every cable can work on UDMA 5 Mode  .

  • FCPx (10.0.4) best HDD performance?

    Hi
    1# I have one external 1HDD with everything pointing of RAW an project in that harddrive.
    2# In my machine is the 2HDD that "apple" from AppStore installd the FCPx program, so its on the OSX Lion drive in machine.
    3# And the third external 3HDD i finnish the project to, u know.. encode ("export) it to a second external HDD.
    But when i have everything on my 1HDD and encode to my 3HDD, all the information goes true 2HDD...... Why??? (in a way i have the FCPx on my 2HDD, is that why? and can i then install it from AppStore to a externaldrive, so my machine HDD does not need to do any work?).
    (i hope i have explaned my problem in a good way with my third lanuage skils..)

    Your Project and Events folders are by default put on the hard drive that contains FCP X.
    As you know it is better to have them on a different HD.
    When you create a new Event to import video you can choose what hard drive you want it on. Make sure that before you create it you have clicked the correct HD in the Event Library window.
    You can also select where you want a new Project to be.
    If you want to move your existing Events and Projects, select them and go to File>Move Project or File>Move Event.

  • HDD performance measuring in Solaris 9

    How can I measure HDD performence and a total performence of mashine ?
    (I have 6x Seagate Chetah Ultra Widw 320 SCSI HDD on the some chanal, 2xIntel Xeon 2.8GHz, 2GB RAM) ORACLE installed on them, work slower them another mashine (1x Seagate Chetah Ultra Widw 160 SCSI, 2x Intel pentnium III 1GHz, 512MB RAM) by the some database.
    Thenks.

    How are you testing these configs? What makes you think one is slower then the other?

  • Slow hdd performance

    Ok I did some research and still can't figure out why writing/reading speed is so slow in practice
    hdparm -tT /dev/sda
    /dev/sda:
    Timing cached reads: 1012 MB in 2.00 seconds = 506.11 MB/sec
    Timing buffered disk reads: 336 MB in 3.01 seconds = 111.58 MB/sec
    With dd I get ~10 MB/s (dd if=/dev/zero of=/test bs=100M count=10)
    Internally copy from mc 5-6 MB/s
    I did multiple tests
    What is going on here?

    I booted this drive from another computer (Asrock M3A770DE mobo) and works fine, speed with dd was ~100MB/s
    I also update bios on my first computer with Intel D945GSEJT (there is selected AHCI mode) still the same transfers with dd (~10Mb/s)
    I have no idea what to do with it now
    EDIT:
    More tests with other hdd (Samsung HD502IJ), dd on mounted NTFS partition:
    Intel D945GSEJT booted from Archlinux iso:
    hdparm: ~75 MB/s
    dd: ~10 MB/s
    Intel D945GSEJT booted from Archlinux iso, HDD connected to PCI SATA controller (Promise 378):
    hdparm: ~60 MB/s
    dd: ~10 MB/s
    Asrock M3A770DE booted from Archlinux iso:
    hdparm: ~87 MB/s
    dd: ~76 MB/s
    Asrock M3A770DE booted from Archlinux iso, HDD connected to PCI SATA controller (Promise 378):
    hdparm: ~81MB/s
    dd: ~76 MB/s
    What is broken on D945GSEJT?

  • Slow HDD performance in XP SP2 with MS-6380

    Hi all,
    I have this HDD throughput problem in XP:
    First, I ran hdd testing utilities within a boot CD and I got:
    35Mb/s, (75Mb/s burst)
    After a clean fresh Windows XP (SP2 integrated) install, I got:
    (with hd_speed and hdtach for windows, first applications that ran after install)
    34Mb/s, 34Mb/s burst ( !?!)
    After installing sound and modem drivers, antivirus and firewall... and a few reboots, I got:
    (with the same testing apps)
    20Mb/s, 20Mb/s burst (!?!)
    Specs:
    MSI-6380 KT3 (without RAID) KT333 Via chipset
    (all IDE related settings in BIOS are ON)
    AMB 1800+
    1x512 RAM @333
    Maxtor HDD 60Gb ATA133
    Onboard Via Sound
    GeForce 5200XT AGP (running @ 4x, mobo max AGP rate)
    IEEE PCI Card
    Windows XP-SP2
    DMA enabled
    I also work with a NT4 PC and I get:
    (with the same testing apps)
    30Mb/s, 67Mb/s burst
    Specs:
    Mboard with i815E
    intel ide controller
    onboard gfx
    iPentiumIII 933
    2x256 RAM @ 133
    Seagate 20Gb ATA100
    Windows NT4-SP6, DMA enabled
    Can somebody tell me what's wrong with this picture?
    Will 4in1 drivers do any good? How about miniport ide drivers?
    Can't I get more of a 'better' system???

    Hello again and thanx for your replies..,
    Well, I don't think XP's Service Pack 2 might be the cause of it.
    I was having the same problem with a previous WinXP installation (SP1a, I guess)
    And yes, I defrag everything...
    The interesting thing is, SOMETIMES, I get the 35-37Mb/s with George Breese's hd_speed. And on other times, I get 20-21Mb/s...
    I don't know if it has something to with some services within SP2 (I got some good info at Black Viper's)
    I'll tweak a little more with those and see what I can come up with.
    I'll post results, if possible.
    Btw, I have 2 partitions in XP:
    'drive' C: with 5Gb (NTFS, 8Bytes/cluster) for SO, apps
    'drive' D: with 55Gb (NTFS, 8Bytes/cluster) for media
    See ya!

  • T530 Ultrabay HDD performance

    Hi,
    How fast should a hard drive be in the ultrabay? I feel like it should be much faster than what I'm experiencing.
    The following metrics were measured with HD Tune on an otherwise idle computer.
    HD Tune: TOSHIBA MK5061GSY Benchmark
    Transfer Rate Minimum : 26.2 MB/sec
    Transfer Rate Maximum : 98.4 MB/sec
    Transfer Rate Average : 74.3 MB/sec
    Access Time : 16.7 ms
    Burst Rate : 67.9 MB/sec
    CPU Usage : -1.0%
    Thanks!

    the Ultrabay in the ThinkPad T420/s, T520, T430/s, T530, W520 and W530 have SATAIII 6 gbps connection. So it is the same connection speed as the main hdd.

    I had (and still have) to patch my kernel for that. Another solution is to use the old ide layer - but both require you recompile your kernel.

  • SATA HDD mode & performance on Satellite P100-222

    Hello Everybody!
    I found that my HDD running in UDMA5 mode instead of supported ATA7. It look like SATA ACHI is switched off in BIOS, and I can't find way to switch it on. It's clear, that UDMA5 still faster then HDD, but that about NCQ & other SATA commands support?
    Anyway, the HD tune results http://www.hdtune.com is lower than specified for this HDD & interface:
    HD Tune: TOSHIBA MK1234GSX Benchmark
    Transfer Rate Minimum : 7.7 MB/sec
    Transfer Rate Maximum : 34.4 MB/sec
    Transfer Rate Average : 28.6 MB/sec
    Access Time : 17.0 ms
    Burst Rate : 64.2 MB/sec
    CPU Usage : 9.1%
    Now it the slower part of my system & waiting for boot up or loading game level take a lot of time.
    Are somebody have any suggestion to increase HDD performance?

    Hi
    In my opinion the problem is not HDD performance just you should optimize your running operating system. How much time the bootup process takes depends on the list of application starting with Windows OS. You can check it if you go to Start > Run and enter there MSCONFIG.
    When the system configuration utility is started Check Startup tab and remove the check mark in front of items you dont need. Check also Startup folder and remove all shortcuts you dont need. On this way the bootup process should be faster.
    If you also need more performance for gaming I recommend you to upgrade RAM. You will see that unit runs much faster and you can use more application at the same time.

  • Problem... High CPU load with HDD. Please Help

    Hello all,
    Im stuck. Ive got a MSI KA790GX which has poor HDD access/transfer, low burst rate and very high CPU load.
    As far as i know the Western Digital 640gb WD6401AALS Black should be a fast hard drive. Which according to reviews/HD Tune,
    should be:-
    Minimum 60mb/sec
    Maximum 120mb/sec
    Average 95mb/sec
    Access 12ms
    Burst 110mb/sec
    CPU 5%
    No matter what I try, i always get poor results...
    My MSI KA790GX
    Minimum 41mb/sec ~ 54mb/sec
    Maximum 104mb/sec ~ 108mb/sec
    Average 86mb/sec ~89mb/sec
    Access 12ms
    Burst 60mb/sec ~ 80mb/sec
    CPU 26% ~ 44%!!!!!!!!
    I could accept not getting the same high speed results as the review/reference, even if the burst rate sucked.
    But one of the cores goes to 50%-60% load during hdd activity. Thats just crazy!!
    I have tried...
    IDE mode, AHCI, RAID Ready, RAID Single Disk
    SATA Port 1, 2, 3, 4 + 5
    Different SATA cables
    Flashed bios, cleared bios, optimised defaults, failsafe defaults
    Windows XP 32bit, Vista 32bit, Vista 64bit. fresh installs
    MSI CD Drivers, MSI Web Drivers, AMD/ATI Web Drivers
        ... and combinations of.
    I have also tested the WD640gb Black on another older PC, with Nvidia (55?) chipset and slower (1.9ghz x2) cpu.
    Transfer rates were slightly better than my KA790GX but, Burst Rate = 115mb/sec and CPU usage = 13%.
    I also tried a Seagate 1.5tb (ST31500341AS) on both PCs,
    Nvidia chipset
    Minimum 65mb/sec
    Maximum 134mb/sec
    Average 107mb/sec
    Access 14ms
    Burst 83mb/sec
    CPU 7%
    On my MSI KA790GX
    Minimum 55mb/sec
    Maximum 120mb/sec
    Average 100mb/sec
    Access 14ms
    Burst 87mb/sec
    CPU 33%!!!!
    Could someone please please help, ive spent hours and hours on this. Its doin my head in.
    I just hope its something stupid ive missed, cos i still not used my HD4850 from christmas :-(
    Thanks.

    Not sure how to check PIO/DMA mode on a SATA device. IDE devices show DMA enabled.
    BIOS version 1.4 - 29 December 2008, and now version 1.51
    Fredrik
    I have Vista 64, but i did try XP32 and Vista32 and got similar poor results.
    I tested HDD speed with, HD Tune 2.55 and HD Tune 3.50 trial.
    No auto-start programs really, Windows clean installs + any drivers.
    Quadrifoglio Verde
    CPU @ default 2800mhz, All mem bios options to auto/defaults
    Windows Experience Index, CPU Score = 5.3
    AMD Overdrive
     Integer Computation = 8220
     Floating Point Computation = 5325
     Memory speed = 1770
     Cache Speed = 10790
     System Performance = 7403
    Bas
    I used HDTune because I could reference to other results. Whats a better program to use?
    Windows Experience Index, HDD Score = 5.9.
    But I have no reference and cant be sure of cpu load.
    Sepher
    Bios defaults to C&C and C1E off so i have tried them. Also windows power settings, balanced/high performance.
    UPDATE
    Reinstalled Vista64 but loaded the AHCI driver from the disk config screen. This seems to have stopped the high cpu usage during disk activity.
    HDTune with Windows Power settings @ High Performance,
    Min = 52mb/sec
    Max = 106mb/sec
    Ave = 88mb/sec
    Access = 12ms
    Burst = 77mb/sec
    CPU = 3.4%
    HDTune with Windows Power settings @ Balanced
    Min = 54mb/sec
    Max = 104mb/sec
    Ave = 87mb/sec
    Access = 12ms
    Burst = 65mb/sec
    CPU = 12%
    So now transfer speed is about 10% slower than reference. But burst speed is terrible.
    I also used IBM Feature Tool to change the HDD AAM to 'performance mode' 254 as suggested elsewhere.
    Long shot as the hdd performs ok with other hardware. same results.
    Also MSI support asked me to try a newer bios, version 1.51. same results.
    Anyone know what the AMD 7-Series Chipsets Disk Performance Utility does, and should i run it in Vista64?
    Thanks for all the replies, hope i can sort this, not played any PC games since Quake 3 on my ti4600...
