Neophyte question: How to measure "open circuit" voltage

Hi,
I'm trying to measure the voltage induced by a peizoelectric cable
(applying pressure to cable creates voltage/current on cable).
But when I measure the voltage  accross the cable I get a
"background" signal that looks like an exponentially decaying voltage,
like a large capicitance discharging. I can measure the real voltage
across the cable, it appears on top of the decaying voltage, but soon
the voltage reaches what I assume is the max low value for my board
(BNC 2120, floating point measurement), -10 volts. I can get the
voltage to go back to zero by touching the leads but this just sets the
process in motion again.  This decaying voltage characteristic is
also present when nothing is connected to the leads, which makes sense,
hence my question about measuring open circuits. Needless to say I
would like the voltage of an open circuit, or accross my cable to be 0.
How can I make this happen?
Thanks in Advance.

I haven't heard of a piezzoelectric cable, but I used to use piezzoelectric transducers. On the chance that a piezzoelectric cable works like a piezzoelectric transducers, I offer this:
Since piezzoelectric transducers are insulating ceramics, they provide no path for the bias currents flowing into the DAQ device inputs. You will need to use a bias resistor to ground if you are using differential input mode.
Further, the signal that a piezzoelectric transducer generates is really an amount of charge, the voltage is dependent on the capacitance they work into, and the leakage resistance of the entire system.
Really you should be using a charge amplifier and feeding the output of the amplifier into your DAQ device.
Here are a couple of links:

Hope this helps. Hope I'm not off-base on my interpretation of your problem.

  • Measuring open circuits

    Hi all,
Any suggestions on how to solve the following problem would be greatly appreciated.
I am making DMM resistance measurements, 2 wire, routing the measurement points through two switches (configured as multiplexers) and comparing the results against a set of expected results, using the Comparison Express VI, set to equal within tolerance.
This works well until I measure open circuits. I need to confirm that some points are open circuit, some points are directly connected and other points have a resistance between them, of up to 15 Kohm.
My open circuits get reported as ‘NaN’ (Not a Number), which doesn’t work with the Comparison function. I tried fitting a 1 Mohm resistor across the DMM terminals to bring it within the DMM measurement range, but the only ways that I have found to get a number reported back, rather than NaN is either to allow the DMM to autorange, but this looses synchronisation with the switches and so isn’t acceptable, or to set the DMM range and resolution for 1 Mohm, but that results in too poor a resolution for the low resistance measurements.
Is there a simple way to convert my NaN readings to a large number before passing them to the Comparison VI?
Or is there a better way of approaching this?
    Thanks,
    Mark

i can do you a small help. it's show you how to detect NaN event. And show what to do in this case.

  • Question: How do I open CS5.5 after migrating to new laptop w/ Mac OS 10.8.4?

question: How do I open CS5.5 after migrating to new laptop w/ Mac OS 10.8.4? I received a dialogue box stating I needed to run Java SE runtime (or something to that effect), when I ok'd it, and try to open cs5.5 Indesign, the program quits on startup. If I uninstall program & reinstall, will my documents be unscathed, or are they toast? Help!

    Hi Art Bunny Rabbit,
Migration from one machine to other causes problem most of the time. So I recommend you to reinstall the software. Done worry none of your documents will be effected.

  • How to measure current and voltage and rpm with daq device

i am measuring current and voltage and am wondering should i use shunt resistors or current sensors hall effect sensors. i have a pci 6221 and a scc-68 breakout box. what specifications or size should the shunt resistor/current sensor be or should i use another device to measure the currrent and voltage. do i need any other safety device between the resistors, current sensors and the scc-68 breakout box when measuring the current and voltage. will the daq card pci 6221 pick up a signal from the resistor. what terminals should the wires from the resistors and current sensors be connected to in the scc-68. i am using a proximity switch to measure rpm of a motor. should the proximity switch be 2 or 3wire connection. should it have an analog or digital connection and is a power supply required to power the proximity switch and should it have an npn or pnp connection

    hello,
i was going to use a 20amp 50mv, or a 20amp 100mv current shunt and connect wires directly into the AI input terminals of the scc-68 from the current shunt would these be suitable. would current shunts such as these be suitable to use http://uk.farnell.com/elc/sh10020/shunt-sh10020-20a-100mv-1-class/dp/1319576 or http://uk.farnell.com/datel/3020-01098-0/shunt-50mv-20a/dp/1339338
is it ok to use either a current shunt or should a hall effect sensor be used  such as this http://ie.farnell.com/honeywell-s-c/csla2cd/sensor-hall-effect/dp/1082269 . which of them would be more accurate or are both of them fairly accurate.
when i am measuring voltage can i connect two resistors between the positive and negative of the wires going to the battery and connect two wires from either side of the resistor directly into the analog inputs of the scc-68 and measure the 12-15 volts directly would the pci6221 and scc-68 be able to measure the voltage drop across the resistor.
i wanted to measure rpm also does it matter whether the proximity switch has 2 or 3 wires and should it have an analog or digital/frequency output for cponnecting to the scc-68

  • How to measure the analogy voltage from different source?

    Hi all,
I am trying to measure the voltage generated from a function generator ranged from -2V to +2V. I am trying to use a PCI-6023E for analogy input. I directly connect the voltage output from the generator to one of the analogy input channel, but the reading is not that accurate, it should be 2.4V but sometimes it read 2.6V and sometimes 2.2V or less. I am thinking if anything to do the the ground? Where should the ground of the BNC from the generator should connect to? Someone suggests to use differential input but I have no experience of doing that, any suggestion or example?

  • How can i make several measurements at each voltage during a voltage sweep

I am using Labview 6 with a Keithley 2400 Sourcemeter.  I found a VI on the Keithley website (2400SWP.VI) for doing a voltage sweep.  My question is how can I modify one of the subVI's so that the sweep will take lets say 3 measurements at each voltage before stepping to the next.  I am a novice and any help would be greatly appreciated.

Enclose the part of the code that takes the measurement inside a For loop.  Wire a numerical constant 3 to the N terminal of the for loop.  Add a delay inside the for loop so that the three readings are taken some time apart, even if it is just a few milliseconds.  The output of the for loop can either be the last value measured (indexing disabled) or an array of all 3 measurements (indexing enabled).  Process the output as you wish.  You can enable indexing to get an array of 3 measurements, take the min/max, or caluclate the average.

  • How to change an "answered question" icon to and "open" one

An hour ago this morning, I re-opened a thread of mine that had already been answered. Unfortunately, I could not easily locate the instruction or button that allows me to convert the "answered question" icon to an "open question" icon. I want to change it so those people who filter their screens to view only "open question" posts will find mine.
Please advise if this can be done. If so, how can it be done?
    Thanks, in advance.

Unless the question is the identical question, please open a new discussion topic. Otherwise, you will present us with a long chain of discussion to wade through to find your new question, and I know I for one...if I think I've already worked through a questions...don't want to wade through it again.
If it is indeed the same question, it is not as clear. It must be the IDENTICAL problem or situation you are facing to "reuse" a thread.
I recommend...especially if you are at all on a different tangent...referring to your earlier thread with a link. State your new question clearly in the title, and present your case succinctly, with links.
What sort of efficiency are you trying to achieve by reopening a question that has been "answered?" If you have already marked responses as helpful or as answers, there's very little pay for considering your reopened question. (joke) Help the Forum economy by opening a new thread!

  • HT2433 My laptop opened with a grey flashing file folder with a question mark inside it .  How to to open my laptop!  I have tried fir e clising several times and restArting  nope nada!

My laptop opened with a grey flashing file folder with a question mark inside it .  How do  I open my laptop!  I have tried force closing several times and restArting  nope !  nada!  Suggestions?

That folder with the question mark icon means that the MacBook can't find the boot directory. That can either mean it can't find the hard drive or the Operating System data on the hard drive is somehow corrupted.
With 10.4, 10.5 or 10.6 put your install DVD into the optical drive (CD/DVD drive) and reboot. Be sure to either use the disc that came with your Mac, or, if you installed a later Mac OS X version from disc, use the newer disc. As soon as you hear the boot chime, hold down the "c" key on your keyboard (or the Option Key until the Install Disk shows up) until the apple shows up. That will force your MacBook to boot from the install DVD in the optical drive.
Or if you are running 10.7 Lion, 10.8 Mountain Lion or 10.9 Mavericks, boot from the recovery partition (Command +R on boot) and use Disk Utility to repair your OS 10.7, 10.8 or 10.9 partition.
When it does start up, you'll see a panel asking you to choose your language. Choose your language and press the Return key on your keyboard once. It will then present you with an Installation window. Completely ignore this window and click on Utilities in the top menu and scroll down to Disk Utility and click it. When it comes up is your Hard Drive in the list on the left?
If it is, then click on the Mac OS partition of your hard drive in the left hand list. Then select the First Aid Tab and run Repair Disk. The Repair Disk button won't be available until you've clicked on the Mac OS partition on your hard drive. If that repairs any problems run it again until the green OK appears and then run Repair Permissions. After repairing use Startup Disk from the same menu to choose your hard drive for restarting from your hard drive.
If your hard drive isn’t recognized in Disk Utility then your hard drive is probably dead.

  • How to measure constant voltage input through scxi-1530

I find that it readfs only when the signal is varrying otherwise it shows zero.

The module is hard-wired for AC Coupled input - hence you will only "see" a signal when there is an AC component. If you want to measure a constant voltage (DC level), I would suggest simply using one of the SCXI-110X series. It is a much cheaper solution.

  • Beginner Question: How to put 5 V on an output?

    Hi everybody,
I am an absolute beginner here, a Biology student that has to do electronics in Labview now...
I want to do as much of this myself as possible, but need truly beginners hints, hoping to be clever enough to put it together myself with your information.
I need to control some outputs, and monitor some inputs. I am focusing on the outputs at the moment.
    Questions:
How do I make a block in my block diagram that can put a variable voltage on an output? I need two controls, one that puts a voltage on an output of 0 to 10 V continuously, the other puts a voltage on an output of 0 to 5 V in increments of 0.1 V
Any hints will be highly appreciated. I have Labview 6 to work with. Pointers like 'look at p
age XX of the manual' will do, but descriptions here, or through my mail... anything will be highly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance

Well, for me and my past gigs this has been a very common situation. When
I worked for telecom we would have to develop apps for instruments that we
wouldn't receive for six months. Luckily we had the basic concept of how
they were supposed to run and this was adequate for development. It
sounds like you're in a similar situation.

Lemme see if I understand you from this post and your first one. You
would like to buid a user interface that includes the following:
    1) A boolean control that gives these two options:
    a) output a continuous voltage in the range of 0-10 volts b) output a
ramping voltage starting at 0 (or 0.1) volts and ending at
5 volts using 0.1 volt increments with a dwell time of x mseconds
    2) A boolean to stop the application
(perhaps another one to pause it)
    3) Several numeric controls:
    a) numeric control for the output voltage b) numeric control for the
dwell time (optional) c) numeric control for the voltage increments
    (optional) for if the
user wants to use values other than 0.1 volts
    4) An indicator that shows what the measured output voltage is. This is
good for verifying your output signal. A chart would be nice.
This is a top down approach which is helpful for laying out the
application's user interface. The next thing you want to do is build some
subVIs to simulate your voltage signals. Once you get some hardware you
can simply replace these simulation subVIs with the real ones that
    actually communicate the hardware.
I'm not sure if your measuring the output voltage too. I kinda just
assumed this but that would require another subVI. I won't tell you how
to build the subVIs (I can't take all the fun out this) but I hope I've
pointed you in the right direction.
    Merry x-mas!
    -Kevin
PS: learn how to play with control references. they're very convenient
when you need to update the front panel indicators with data from a subVI
sitting in its own continuous loop. it avoids global variable abuse.

    Hi All,
I want to open report in my MDI form instead of opening it into a separate Oracle Report Navigator(i.e. Window which shows the report). How to do that? When I click the Report from Menu it should open it within the MDI Form. Any suggestion or reply would be greatly appreciated.
One more question is how can i open report with in a maximized state. Actaully, the report will be opened in the normal state. How to open in maximized state instead of normal state. Is there any property in reports to acheive this?

    hello,
reports is a separate application that is called from forms and therefore is running outside the context of the forms MDI window.
you can use the commandline parameter MAXIMIZE=YES to start the runtime in full-screen-mode.
