Nested custom tag-jsp

Hi,
How can I use nested custom tags in jsp?

Note that not all custom tags will work like this. The tag must be designed to work this way. Some tags will not accept a body, others will accept a body, but will not process it through the JSP compiler, rather handling it as text/html.
Have you tried nesting them and you're not getting the expected results? Have you written these tags yourself and they're not working?

  • Rendering Querydata in nested Custom-Tags

    Hi all
    I have built two custom-tags to render the results of a query
    in a table (a bit like the display-tag-library or the datatable-tag
    of JSF). the parent tag takes the query as attributes as well as
    some other things like records per page.
    the child-tag defines a single column. the developer can
    define a query-column-name in an attribute as well as the label and
    so on.
    the typical code looks like this and this works fine:
    <tags:dataTable collection="#AddressQuery#"
    basePath="#link.list#">
    <tags:dataTableColumn column="id" label=""
    selection="true" />
    <tags:dataTableColumn column="name" label="Name"
    sortable="true" />
    <tags:dataTableColumn column="street" label="Strasse"
    sortable="true" />
    <tags:dataTableColumn column="houseNumber"
    label="Hausnummer" sortable="true" />
    <tags:dataTableColumn column="isEnabled" label="Aktiv"
    sortable="false" />
    </tags:dataTable>
    Now, I'd like to allow the developer to write custom code to
    generate the content of a table column. For example show the value
    of a bit-field with icons:
    <tags:dataTableColumn label="my bit-column">
    <cfif #columnname# gt 0>[display image
    "active"]<cfelse>display image "inactive"</cfif>
    </tags:dataTableColumn>
    Unfortunately, this throws an error because the variable of
    the querycolumnname can't be resolved when the tag-content is
    executed (the query-loop is done when the parent's end-tag is
    processed).
    Can I prevent CF to execute the tag-content, but instead save
    the code of the developer and execute it later when processing the
    endtag of the parent?
    If not can I solve this problem otherwise?
    thanks
    stefan

    Hi Jesse.
    I'm also working on something very similar to the tab pane you are talking about. Mine was inspired by the CoreJSF book (I used some of the downloadable pre-release chapters). Great book. It's at www.corejsf.com
    The basic idea behind theirs (and mine) is that the tab pane widget maintains a collection of tabs as a property. In the tag handler class you can specify the tabs themselves as either child components or facets (they used f:selectItem and f:selectItems, along with facets). I liked the f:selectItems the best.
    All of the rendering is done in the renderer class. The book has examples of how to include additional jsp content specified as a fragment.
    I would really suggest having a look at the book.

  • Nested Custom Tags

    Hello,
    I have a custom tag that I've written that has some
    attributes. I want to nest that tag inside of itself, and access
    the attibutes of the parent tag. However, when I try to access the
    parent tag's data from the child all I get is the child tag's data!
    If there are two of the same custom tags in the context stack, is
    it possible to access one from the other? Thanks for your help.

    > I can't use the
    > CALLER scope, as that references the page that called
    the first custom tag, no
    > matter how deeply nested I am.
    I think you should test the advice, before you make
    assertions like this.
    The CALLER scope refers to the variables scope of the
    template that called
    the currently executing custom tag. If your calling stack is
    like this:
    index.cfm
    customTagA.cfm
    customTagB.cfm
    Then the situation is this:
    1) In index.cfm: no caller scope.
    2) In customTagA.cfm: caller scope references index.cfm's
    variables scope.
    3) custoTagB.cfm: caller scope references customTagA.cfm's
    variables scope
    (NOT index.cfm's one).
    Similarly, if your calling stack is like this:
    index.cfm
    customTag.cfm (*)
    customTag.cfm
    customTag.cfm
    customTag.cfm
    Then the caller scope in each customTag.cfm instance refers
    to the
    variables scope of the file above it. The only caller scope
    that
    references index.cfm's variables scope is the customTag
    instance marked
    with (*).
    If I understand your requirement, this is what you want. This
    is why I
    suggested it.

  • Urgent-how to access custom tag from jsp tag

    I have a problem accessing a custom tag from a jsp expression.
    Details: I have a custom tag that returns a string variable. I need to access that variable from jsp expression <%%>.
    Can any body help me?

    Tags don't "return" values as in the normal sense.
    They can only support TEI (Tag Extra Information) that just stuffs a declared variable into the page's state.
    For example, if the tag class had a public method called getValue(), you could do the following:
    <xmp:mytag id="foo"/>
    <%
    out.println("value is " + foo.getValue());

    <% list.add(year.getContentEntryName()); %>
    You have to have defined in the custom tag that "var" relates to a scripting variable that you want defined.

        <variable-class>myPackage.myClass</variable-class>

  • How to use JSP custom tag lib in PAR file?

    Hi All,
    I am trying to customize mastheaderpar file. For that I have downloaded relevant par file and making the changes accordingly.
    As part of the changes I would require to use JSP custom tag library in my par file.
    I have the TLD file and relevant classes in the jar file. I would like to know where and what kind of modifications have to be done to use the jsp custom tag library.
    I tried modifying some things in portalapp.xml but was not successful.
    Please help me on how to proceed with this? It would be great if you can provide the xml entry to use this tag library
    Thanks
    Santhosh

    Hi Johny,
    Thanks for the reply. Actually I am able to change colors etc. with out any problem.
    My requirement is to use XMLTaglib in mastheader par file. This tag lib is from apache tomcat. I have the relevant TLD and class files. I copied TLD file into taglib dir of portal-inf and class file in src api.
    And I have added the following line in portalapp.xml under component-profile section of default
    <property name="tlxtag" value="/SERVICE/Newmastheader/taglib/taglibs-xtags.tld">
    Is this the right way to use tag lib? Actually before adding this line I used to get the error saying "Error parsing taglib", but now the error does not occur and I am getting new error. This is an exception in one of the taglib classes.
    Could any one provide me some inputs on how to check this error?
    Thanks
    Santhosh

  • Dynamic include in a custom tag, called from a jsp

    Hello, I would like to be able to dynamically include other jsp's from within a custom tag that I create. is this possible?
    in a jsp page i would just write <%@ include file="file.jsp" %> and all would be ok... but if i do an out.println( "<%@ include file=\"file.jsp\" %>" ); inside a custom tag bean then it doesn't work. it just prints out the command to the page as plain text.
    I do understand why this is happening, but can anyone offer me a way around this problem?
    Thanks in advance,
    Randy

    That's actually the same result as you get with a normal include - The method I suggested is a dynamic include similar to the <jsp:include> tag, not the <%@ include %> tag.
    When you use a dynamic include, the included page is compiled and 'invoked' as serarately, and the result is what gets included, not the actual source. To get the behaviour you want would require an include directive (the <%@ include %> tag) which I don't think has an equivalence you can use inside a custom tag.
    What you can do is pass attributes from the tag class like this:
    pageContext.setAttribute(<name>, <object>, pageContext.REQUEST_SCOPE);
    and then remove them after the include using pageContext.removeAttribute.
    I'm not certain, but this implies that if you declare your variables with a <jsp:usebean> tag with request scope, instead of normal Java variable declarations, you should be able to use them in the page included by the custom tag.
    *** in the jsp ***
    <jsp:useBean id="myVar" scope="request" class="java.lang.String" />
    <% myVar = "Something"; %>
    // Now call the tag which uses the pageContext.include() mehtod.
    *** end ***
    *** in the include ***
    <jsp:useBean id="myVar" scope="request" class="java.lang.String" />
    <%= myVar + " something else" %>
    *** end ***
    Let me know if it works.

  • Initialization of parameter values in JSP Custom Tag Handlers

    Hi - I have a tag handler for a custom tag that has no body, but accepts
              some parameters.
              If the parameters are optional and are passed with the tag in the source jsp
              page, then all is fine.
              However, for subsequent uses of the same tag in the same page if the
              optional parameters are omitted, the previous values remain in the instance
              of the tag handler class, as the attributes for the tag handler are declared
              as instance variables (with corresponding getters and setters) as per the
              tag handler specs.
              eg:
              <abc:sometag attrib1="a" attrib2="b"/>
              if attrib1 and attrib2 are optional, then a subsequent use of this tag, eg:
              <abc:sometag/>
              attrib1 and attrib2 still have their previously assigned values of "a" and
              "b".
              Is there a method I can call to get the actual values of the attributes that
              were passed on a particular call to the tag handler, or is there a way to
              initialize the attributes before the tag handler processing method, eg
              doBeforeBody(), doAfterBody(), is called?
              Thanks,
              Kevin Hooke

    Yeah, just call the JSPWriter's print method instead of using the StringBuffer, or write your own subclass of StringBuffer (or StringBuilder if Java 5+) which will do this for you automatically when the size is at a certain point, and clear it out)

  • Design view for jsp custom tags.

    when we drag-and-drop custom tag control in the source of jsp page, when we switch to the design view of jsp we should be able to view controls as desired.
    Observation: 1) Eclipse 3.2 doesn't have design view for jsp pages.
    2) which software uses the design view. we need to extend eclipse core framework and we do not find any technical approach document to proceed further on this.
    3) RAD 6.0 we can see a JSP in design view.
    I'm searching for any technical approach document to create plugin that can intercept the custom tags and provide a design view.
    Will any one suggest the plugin for that.

    Jeff,
    I have checked with engineering and found that JSP Design View support on
    Linux is a planned feature for the next release. I don't think we will have
    this feature as part of a Service Pack for 8.1

  • Data Streaming in JSP custom tag

    We have a JSP custom tag which uses a StringBuffer object to store the HTML content. In the doEndTag method, we use the JSPWriter's print method to send the buffer's content to the browser.
    Now, there are cases when the HTML content becomes very large,in the order of 1 - 10MB. In such cases, is there a way we can start streaming the data from the custom tag as the buffer is being built, rather than waiting for the entire buffer to be written out in the doEndTag.

    Yeah, just call the JSPWriter's print method instead of using the StringBuffer, or write your own subclass of StringBuffer (or StringBuilder if Java 5+) which will do this for you automatically when the size is at a certain point, and clear it out)

  • Using gateway'd URLs in JSP custom tag attributes

    Hello,
    I am running Plumtree G6 using a gateway prefix to gateway Javascript from a remote server. I have recently discovered, thanks to people's help on the forum here, that in certain cases, you need to wrap a URL in a pt:url tag in order for Plumtree to recognize it as a URL that has to be gateway'd (i.e. a URL inside of a Javascript function).
    However, I have a custom tag that contains a contextPath attribute. This custom tag then includes other XML files that get included in the final page that is displayed. I am passing this value as my contextPath:
    <mytag:body sessionName="mysession" campusName="SampleCampus" contextPath="<pt:url pt:href='http://localhost:7021/application/scripts' xmlns:pt='http://www.plumtree.com/xmlschemas/ptui/'/>"/>
    However, in the resulting content that is created from this custom tag, the contextPath value is still set to <pt:url pt:href=......./>, and not the actual gateway'd URL. I would have thought that Plumtree would have recognized and gateway'd this URL before it got substituted in the custom tag.
    Does anyone have any thoughts on how to get around a problem like this? One thought I had was to get ahold of the gateway URL value and pass that value directly in my contextPath attribute. Is it possible to get that gateway value, or is there a better solution here?
    Thanks again for any help you can provide.

    Chris,
    I added your code, changed the portlet's web service to send a login token for this portlet, and was then getting some ClassNotFoundExceptions related to Axis classes. So, I went and added all of the jar files from the devkit's lib directory (i.e. plumtree\ptedk\5.3\devkit\WEB-INF\lib), recompiled, and those errors went away. But, now I see the following error:
