Nested sequences problem

When I drag an existing sequence into a new sequence it now suddenly divides into its individual clips before it is set in the timeline. I want the nested sequence in the new sequence. What has changed? How do I change it back? I can create the nested sequence using the Nest... command, but I do not want to create a new nested sequence when I already have one in the project window.

  • Nested Sequence Audio Problems

    Hi all,
Progressing with FCP and experimenting with doing things differently, I am trying to take advantage of being able to nest sequences so that the minor changes I make to these individual sequences automatically update in the large, full sequence in which these various scenes are nested. It's great.
However, I have encountered a couple of different problems with audio. For instance, at various points, when I am playing the full sequence (the one containing nested sequences), audio drops out completely (though only briefly). At other times, an audio track that I have faded out pops back on for no reason.
Does this ring a bell with anyone?

I have never really had any luck nesting sequences in FCP. When I first bought FCP, version 1, I was sold on the premise that FCP has about 90% of what After Effects has in it. It does not. FCP is a video editor and not really designed to nest sequences like a AE. I like Motion because it can render internally in FCP instead of AE that requires you to render to a media file and then import that into FCP. I hate to tell you that you compositing is something best reserved for a dedicated compositor. Doing it in FCP will only make you cry.

  • Nesting Sequences (Audio Tracks Problem)

I am trying to use Premiere to make a rough (rough!) edit of some audio. There is no video yet.*
I made a handful of sequences in Premiere, all of which consist of edited audio clips.
Now I have created a new big sequence, and I want to nest the audio sequences in this new big sequence. (I only want to bring in the audio, if I can do this easily.)
When I drag the sequences into the new big sequence, it keeps dumping the audio on Track 9, which didn't exist before.
How tough will it be to put the audio of the nested sequences on Track 1?
*Animations will be made later in After Effects and added to the timeline to go with the audio. Until then, there's no video.

Your sequence setup is messing things up. Audio tracks are either mono, stereo or 5.1. If you have only stereo tracks (indicated by the two speaker icon at the left side of the track), they can not be placed in a mono or 5.1 track. If a stereo track is missing, one will be created for you. Same with the other formats. There is nothing wrong with a 9-th audio track, but you can delete the empty tracks above it easily to move your audio track to the first track.
Basically, you need to adjust your sequence settings.

  • Premiere CC 2014.2 crashes when rendering or (rendering effects) In and Out SEQUENCE for playback in a Nested Sequence

I have 4 internal HDD and an External. No matter where I assign Media Cache Files or Media Cache Database Premiere crashes within 100-300 frames in a Nested sequence. I am trying to move the caches around, deleting them, restarting a fresh nested sequence... nothing! I cannot get the short film done because of it. I have even formatted my hard drive and started fresh thinking that solves the problem, but it still remains. Anyone know what I can do?

  • Each edit is taking 5-10 seconds to process in some of my project file's nested sequences. What can I do?

I edit a weekly news show. For this show, I have created a Project File that I re-use as a template every week. It's a highly nested template, with a sequence for every used material (the anchorman’s footage, the news set, the media playing over the anchorman’s shoulder, the lower thirds, etc). It has three different camera angles in a multicam sequence, each sequence sharing the same nested sequences but just resized to look like a different camera angle.  To make this easier to understand, here's an episode (explicit):
SKATELINE - Cory Kennedy, David Gonzalez, Jimmy Carlin In Enjoi Oververt and more.. - YouTube
In the past, the template has worked perfectly. However, everytime Adobe has a major update and I update the project file, for some reason, some of the sequences perform very sluggishly. With Adobe's recent update, the sequences for the anchorman’s footage and the media playing behind him are very slow to make edits in. Every action I do takes 10 seconds to process, even moving an image. However, if I work in the master sequence (With everything put together) everything runs perfectly smooth when I make edits.
In an attempt to fix this problem, I decided to recreate the project file from scratch, with the new update, but even then, my "anchorman footage" and "media behind him" sequences are very slow. What's even more bizarre is if I select a piece of footage in the anchorman sequence, my entire program sometimes crashes. I have tried rendering the sequences to help performance, but that hasn't worked. I have tried installing CUDA Drivers to use the CUDA version of the Mercury Playback Engine on my Macbook Pro Retina, but it also still isn’t working.
So why do you think that my sequences are operating so slowly? What could be causing it? Could it be that each sequence is used several times in the multicam sequence? If so, why has it worked smoothly until now? What can I do?

Yes same issue for me also, working in mutli cam nestings
Very Very Sluggish Performance, semi hangs in PP, if you actually wait long enough, or leave it hung whilst you do a post on here, for a few minutes then it may come back to response.
The issue is defo to do with nesting, I have tried turning off audio wave forms, which helps in the multicam nest edit but as soon as you put that sequence into a third nest then the sluggishness is major.
Basically, this looks to be the same issues that have been reported before with the new update.

  • Freaky nested sequences

    Hi, anyone experienced the following:
When double clicking on a nested sequence in the timeline to edit that sequence, any edits or changes you make to that sequence do not update back in the parent timeline. For instance if you cut a clip out or rearrange clips in the nested sequence then go back to the parent timeline you see the sequence as it was before you made those changes. Then go back to the nested sequence timeline and see all your edits/changes have been lost!!
The only workaround I see is to remove the nested sequence from the parent timeline, make your edits/changes then drop the sequence back into the parent timeline.
Am I missing something? I thought it would be a case of the nested sequence auto-updating itself in the parent timelline after any changes made, as for example in after effects.

    Hello Chris...
Did your nested sequence need rendering when you created it? If so, the problem is caused by FCP referencing the origonal render files, which themselves act as little QT clips.
After you have made your changes in the 'open' nested sequence, back in your main sequence, you need to force the nested seq to render again. You can do this by quickly moving the opacity overlay line up and down, or disabling - re-anabling the clip. The changes will now be recognised.

  • Time remapping / slow motion extremely jumpy with nested sequence!

I have just finished the rough-cut of a ceremony when I went back to add effects-- slow motion, color correct, etc. only to find that ANY time-change is jittery-- extremely jittery, like it's skipping frames.
For trial purposes I created a new timeline with only one video clip placed multiple times. I reduced one to 50% with frame-blending, the other 50% with NO frame-blending and the final using time re-mapping with frame-blending. At 50% I don't expect fluid movement, but they are all acceptable... Until I put a different timeline in the timeline (I think it's a "nested sequence").
When speed is slowed on ANY nested sequence it is jittery. Whether it is a single nested sequence or a multi-camera sequence, it jumps.
Has anyone else had this problem?! Is this a bug? I never noticed it until this wedding. I am using CS3 and I cannot afford the time to re-edit this ceremony with 2.0.... Unless I have no choice.

    Hi Wil,
I have tried using both. Time remapping on the clip (not nested) works fine, so does 'speed change.' But both time remapping and speed change result in jumpy frames when applied to a nested sequenced clip.
I tried this on another (much lower system) and have found the same results. I am begining to think it is the footage but it seems odd that it is perfect when applied to a clip in the timeline but NOT to a timeline in the timeline (nested).
I am on vacation and do not have access to a faster machine until next late next week but for now I will try the export again to be sure Encore sees the same thing.
I am dumbfounded because I had been using 1.5, then 2.0 and now CS3 for weddings for years and have never noticed this. I have noticed it on the both the last project and now this current one.
I thought it could have been the original footage (or a camera problem except that the problems are not there until a nested sequence comes along. I will try moving the footage to my internal drive now and see what happens...
Thank you so far for giving me ideas.

  • Converting a nested sequence into a single clip

    Hi,
I was wondering if anybody could tell me how to convert a nested sequence into a single clip?
I have captured several forty minute mini-dv tapes and there were a lot of timecode breaks, my user preferences made FCP generate a new clip every time the timecode changed.
I like to make subclips from a single master clip when I edit so I added all the broken clips into a sequence and nested them which has created a single clip within a sequence, but it has labeled the footage as a 'sequence' in the browser as opposed to a 'clip'.
I think I need to strip the footage of its timecode but to not want to have to print to a blank mini-dv cassette and then re-import, if anyone knows of a solution to this problem it would be a great help.
    Many thanks.

  • Time remapping a nested sequence results in black/empty video

    Hey!
I have a long sequence (47 minutes), which I wish to time remap (to increase the speed at certain Keyframes). I have therefore nested the sequence into a Master Sequence, where I perform the time remapping. However I experience what appears to be a weird bug: At a certain frame the video turns black/empty and stays that way - even though the original sequence still has video material.
It doesn't help splitting the clip (nested sequence) up in smaller clips and time remap those individually - the empty frames just appear earlier in each clip.
    Export works fine
When I export the sequence as Media, the output seems fine however.
I hope, that you are able to help me or tell me, if I'm doing something wrong.
    Thanks in advance!
    Hardware info
I work on a MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2014).

it depends on how powerful the video card is, and how many accelerated effects are being used. it might slow you down a little, or alot. if you have an intel graphics, they arent very powerful to begin with, basically just good for browsing the web. however premiere tries to use them and they cause lots of problems. im not sure if its premiere or intel thats causing the problem, but they dont play nice together.  if you have the nvidia version macbook, you might have opencl or cuda available in the renderer menu. if it was on opencl, could try cuda, or opencl if it was on cuda.

  • Why is my nested sequence layering the effects?

    Hey Everyone,
So after I color correct my master clips, I sync them, remove the unwanted audio, then nest them. BUT, in the nested sequence it seems that all the video tracks layer the video effects throwing my nested sequence in a horrible color landscape of overexposed or over colored clips! Can anyone help me?
    Mike Diaz

    JSS1138,
I apologize for the confusion, I'm new to Premiere CS6. When I import my master clips, I lay them on their respective video track 1, 2, or 3 because I usually only shoot with 3 cams (see screen shot) I label them for what camera footage they are: Camera 1, Camera 2, and Camera 3. Then I bring them into the sequence on individual tracks stacked so Plural Eyes can sync them on top of what will be my main audio recorder. Then Plural Eyes imports the all the video and audio clips back in Premiere but now all the video clips are in sync with my main audio source. Now I will have a sequence with 3 video tracks with their respective clips from their own camera synced up but not color corrected or nested on one video track yet. This is where I color correct each camera on their own video track and apply to the entire camera's footage. But the problem is when I nest all the video and audio tracks together, it overlays the effects instead of leaving the individual camera with its own effects.

  • Copy and Past Nested Sequence loses link to Master

Has anyone else noticed this problem? I've got a nested sequence that I'm cutting and editing around and most of the time everything is fine. If I doubleclick the nested sequence in my main sequence, it opens the nested one and if I then double click the nested sequence in my Browser, it goes to that same sequence. Changed in one will show up in the other.
BUT, if I copy and paste the nested sequence in my main sequence, the new pasted version will open a NEW sequence that isnt linked to the Master in my Browser. So now, changes in the new nested sequence or the Master dont show up in the other one.
Is this just me thats having this problem?

I can see where you are coming from, and where the engineers at Apple were coming from, but I strongly disagree with this behavior. In my opinion, if you want to have a separate copy of a sequence, you should make a copy in your bin and bring that in. That way your new sequence HAS a master sequence and you can CHANGE the name, both of which help to avoid confusion.
So, maybe you're right and most people prefer it the way that it is, but let me explain the workflow I'm using and you'll see why this is so absolutely frustrating to me.
I'm editing a documentary in Chinese and as I dont speak Chinese, I've had it all translated, and added subtitles to the interview footage so I can edit it. And to make absolutely sure that the subtitles and footage stay in sync (since I wouldnt know it if they werent) I've put all the footage into separate sequences and I'm editing those sequences as if they are raw footage.
And due to this, I'm throwing sequences around every which way while I try to create my story. And sometimes that means copying a series of edits into a new timeline to work on separately from the larger project. And as I see it, there is NO WAY to do that currently and keep the sequences linked to the masters, other than pulling up each master sequence into the Viewer, changing the in and out points to match the clip I want and Inserting it into a new timeline. And when you want to copy over a segment that has perhaps 20 edited bits, thats WAY too much trouble.
So I'll admit that I'm editing in a somewhat abnormal way due to my subtitles, but as there is no way to copy and paste sequences and keep the link to the Master, I think the behavior is broken.
Oh, and the "Tools->Create Master Clips" command, which is supposed to relink clips to their masters if there are any in the Browser, doesnt work for Nested Sequences.

  • Making Changes To Nested Sequences

I have edited a series of clips into a sequence in FCP. Let's call that sequence Sequence 1, shall we?
Later, I had to create a new sequence, based on clips edited from the first sequence. Clips from Sequence 1 have been nested into a new sequence, called Sequence 2.
I was asked to make an overall change to the look of the video. I went back to the first sequence, Sequence 1, and placed a semi-transparent Photoshop layer over it. It looks pretty cool.
    But...
...the Sequence 1 that is nested into Sequence 2 has not changed. How do I get the Photoshop layer that is in Sequence 1 to be visible in Sequence 2?
In other words, how do I get the nested sequence to reflect the changes that were made to it?
    Thanks!

You need to doubleclick on the nest in the containing sequence (sequence 2).  That will load the correct version of sequence 1 in the timeline.  Any changes you make to this version should be reflected in the containing sequence.  If they are not, toggle the nest on and off (select it and hit control b).  This will force an update if there's a problem.
When you edit something into a sequence, it creates a copy.  So any changes you make to the original are not reflected in the sequence.  This is a very basic fact of fcp.  For example, load a clip in the viewer,  edit it into the timeline.  Change your in point in the viewer.  This change is not reflected in the timeline.  But if you double click on the clilp in the timeline, this version of the clip loads in the viewer.  If you change the in point in the viewer, the in point of the clip in the timeline changes.
If you apply a filter to a nest and want to adjust the parameters of the filter, option doubleclick the nest and it will load in the viewer and you can adjust the filter.

  • Is there a limitation of nested sequences?

In Final Cut it was always a problem to nest sequence because of render problems with ghostpictures and audio issue.
Is this better to handle in Premiere Pro escpacially when I'm nesting an always nestet seequence into another or can I go as deep as I want?

There is no documented limit of Nested Sequences.

  • Image in nested sequence does not let me export my project

    Hello,
    Here's my issue:
In my Premiere project, I have a "Master" sequence in which I have normal a/v files and two nested sequences, for the video intro and ending.
The problem is with the nested intro sequence, which is composed of several images that I've animated, plus sound. I've narrowed the source of the problem to one specific image in this sequence, which is 5760x3240. I've read in other threads that images larger than 1920x1080 can be a problem, but couldn't find further info.
What happens when I try to render my video in 1080p with this image in a nested sequence is the encoding fails with AME giving me this log message -
    " - Encoding Time: 00:00:01
    09/22/2014 10:45:46 PM : Encoding Failed
    Export Error
    Error compiling movie.
    Unknown error."
When I try to render in 720p with the image in the nested sequence it works fine. When I take the image out of the nested sequence and just put it on the "Master" sequence it also renders just fine, even in 1080p.
So my question is - why can't I render my project if I have this image in a nested sequence, and if possible, how can I fix it?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hello again,
While trying to do what you told me I've come across something interesting. Apparently it's not only that one image that's responsible for the problem. Here's how I have it setup:
Premiere for some reason seems to have trouble rendering the still image "BG2.png" (1920x1080) AND the problematic 5760x3240 nested image at the same time. As "BG2.png" does not actually appear until later, I tried cutting it just before the point where it should appear. With that, AME was able to render the video until the point where "BG2.png" started, then it failed again. So I checked in the nested sequence and also cut the 5760x3240 image (because it appears briefly in the start of the sequence then has its oppacity set to 0, it wasn't a problem). So what I had was the 5760x3240 image cut after it appeared (instead of just turning down the oppacity) and BG2 cut before it appeared, that way those images didn't overlap in the master sequence. With that, AME was able to render it just fine. So I have no idea why, but those 2 specific images won't let my sequence render when they ocuppy the same time. Any ideas?
