Nesting Template w/ Repeating Regions
I'm new to Dreamweaver so please bare with me. I am setting
up a nested template. On my first level template I have some
editable regions and some repeating regions that also have an
editable region inside. On the second level template I created some
more editable regions. I then create my actual html page from the
second level template, and on that page the editable regions are
ok, but the I don't have access to the repeating regions from the
first level template - they are static. Is that working as
expected? Is there any way I can make my repeating regions
pass-though also?
Thanks,
Ken
If you don't use nested templates, you never have to face
such mind-bending
issues. I have not yet found a scenario where I needed to use
nested
templates....

M'kay, so first and foremost, all of this is being done within Dreamweaver CS5. How I might explain this is that I have a series of Master-Templates for my website, accompanied then by Child-Templates linked off of / nested from my Master-Templates. So far this is going wonderfully, that is, until I try to make a page from one of my Child-Templates.
The page from my Child-Template accurately comments-out an un-editable region (Region in which was editable within the Master-Template, but left as ONLY editable within the Child-Template) so long as I add an EDITABLE region WITHIN it. Under the circumstance that I DO NOT add an editable region within the Master-Template's editable region, the region within the Page is still appearing editable.
For example:
Master Template:
<!-- TemplateBeginEditable name="ChildTemplateCSSLinks" -->
Child Template CSS Links Here.
<!-- TemplateEndEditable -->
Child Template:
<!-- InstanceBeginEditable name="ChildTemplateCSSLinks" -->
Child Template CSS Links Here.
<!-- TemplateBeginEditable name="ChildPageCSSLinks" -->
Child PAGE CSS Links Here.
<!-- TemplateEndEditable -->
<!-- InstanceEndEditable -->
Child Page:
Child Template CSS Links Here. (Accurately appearing Un-Editable - {Master-Template's editable region tags accurately appearing invisible})
<!-- InstanceBeginEditable name="ChildPageCSSLinks" -->
Child PAGE CSS Links Here. (Accurately appearing Editable)
<!-- InstanceEndEditable -->
This is an example of an editable regions that WORKS. In the Child-Page the "Child Template CSS Links Here." IS appearing commented out and therefore un-editable within the Child-Page, like it's supposed to be. This then allows the "Child PAGE CSS Links Here" to be ACCURATELY editable within the Child-Page.
Now for an example of what DOESN'T work:
Master Template:
<!-- TemplateBeginEditable name="ChildTemplateCSSLinks" -->
Child Template CSS Links Here.
<!-- TemplateEndEditable -->
Child Template:
<!-- InstanceBeginEditable name="ChildTemplateCSSLinks" -->
Child Template CSS Links Here.
(As you see, I have NOT added an additional editable region within this Master-Template's editable region. This is an area that is ONLY supposed to be editable within the Child-Template and NOT the Child-Page, which SO FAR appears to be accurate.)
<!-- InstanceEndEditable -->
Child Page:
<!-- InstanceBeginEditable name="ChildTemplateCSSLinks" -->
Child Template CSS Links Here.
(For some reason, ONLY so long as I DO NOT add an additional Child-Template-editable-region within this Master-Template's editable region, this area is STILL appearing visible as well as editable within the Child-Page.)
<!-- InstanceEndEditable -->
So, under this circumstance, it seems that the only way I can leave a Master-Template's editable region ONLY editable within the Child-Template and NOT editable within the Child-Page is by leaving an ADDITIONAL editable region produced via the Child-Template somewhere within EVERY SINGLE editable region produced via the Master-Template. Unless I am doing something seriously wrong, this so far appears to be a potential defect/bug within Dreamweaver CS5. I can't imagine how this would be accurate, otherwise Child/Nested-Templates would not be possible to make. What might I be doing wrong? Is there any way that I can specify in the Master-Template that an Editable Region is ONLY Editable within the Child-Template and NOT within further Child-Pages (A Page based off of the Child-Template)? Or perhaps is there a way that I can specify in the Child-Template that an editable region WILL NOT be editable within the Child-Page? Furthermore, no, I DO NOT want to make them "Optional Regions," so please do not suggest that.
I know that this is all probably a bit confusing, but hopefully the examples above will help more than the descriptions aside. As you can probably assume, this is definitely a HUGE complication within my website if there doesn't end up being a solution, especially with all the time I have put into making the Child-Templates that I hope to rely on. It really would be a bit ridiculous if I had to script-in an additional editable region within every single Master-Template-editable-region available within my Child-Template just so that I may update my Child-Template, furthermore allowing my edits to drop down to my Child-Pages, especially since it would maintain content that I never wanted to be editable within the Child-Page in the FIRST place.
Some help would be sincerely appreciated, and as soon as possible, if I might ask politely.
Thank you. Sincerely,
~ Miss Cat=____= I cannot believe that I am saying this, after writing ALL of that up, but thanks to "Dreamweaver CS5 for Dummies," I just learned that if you place: @@(" ")@@ within the Child/Nested Template's editable region that you DO NOT want passed down to your Child-Pages, it won't appear editable. Goodness knows why such an inconspicuous formula was the answer, but I guess whatever works. ...WHY WAS THIS INFORMATION SO DIFFICULT TO FIND?!?!?!?! @____@ Information on Nested Templates in general seems rather difficult to find, however, so I'm glad I figured this out /not ever a full hour/ after writing all this up and posting it. #__# ...At least my Child-Templates can work thoroughly now, though. So... Scenario FIXED. ^^
I only hope now that such information will appear helpful to anyone else hunting for this information via Google or other Search Engine in the future. And if there is anything at all that I am still officially missing, then do feel free to add it to the feed and let me know, because the last thing I need right now are more surprise difficulties to equally slow down the productivity of this massive project I've been working on... @___@ ..But so far things seem to be going good. ^^ So I can settle myself unbelievably grateful that there ended up being a solution to this ridiculousness after all.
Sincerely,
Miss Cat

Hello all,
I've been working with templates for the past few weeks and I'm loving it!
Everything has gone smoothly till now. I'm having a very unsual problem with repeating regions and I can't seem to figure out what is causing it. Hopefully someone here can shed some light on this issue.
Basically, I have two templates: one parent and one child template. There are two repeating regions in total.
Problem: When I create a new page using the child template, the repeating regions disappear completely. Meaning, all the repeating region code surrounding an element is completely gone. In fact, my repeating regions have an editable region within it and they disappear with the repeating region! However, when I create a new page using the parent template itself, the repeating regions are there and everything is functioning as it should.
This is only happening with repeating regions. All editable regions, separate from repeating regions, are there.
I would really appreciate the help!
Thanks!I had no idea that nested templates are a serious problem in Dreamweaver.
It's not. It's a serious problem for users who opt to use them. Why? Because any benefit you derive from the coolness is more than offset by the disadvantages you experience down the road from their use. I am a devout user of templates and have never found a single scenario where the use of nested templates would help.
Most of my knowledge of Dreamweaver comes from Lynda.com's videos. I'm surprised that the instructor behind those videos never mentioned any such problem about nested templates.
Me too. To me this says that they have never *actually* used them either. It's very disappointing.
Is there any other way to replicate this functionality?
Yes, in every case there is. But first tell me how you were going to use them, please. What specifically is it about them that you were going to leverage in your page design?
When working with templates, I use the following scheme....
First, I mentally separate the page layout into three sections:
1. Stuff that will not change for the life of the site (i.e., the basic
structural elements)
2. Stuff that *could* change from time to time (e.g., navigation elements,
burst advertisements, section-specific navigation, etc.)
3. Stuff that *will* change from one page to the next
Then I create a template containing all class1 elements. Next I create
server-side include files containing all class 2 elements and place them on
the template as needed. Note - some of the class 2 elements may be
"section-specific elements", and their placement on the template will be
subject to the next item. Finally, I insert editable regions to cover the
class 3 items, INCLUDING the section-specific navigation.
This allows me to just cookie-cut the rest of the site. I estimate that
even for fairly large sites, about 80% of my work goes into planning and
creating this template file. -
Nested templates - problems with inheriting editable/repeating regions
I have made a template called 'basic', with 2 sections, 'maincontent' and 'sidecontent' then nested a template in it called 'home'. In 'home', I have made repeats of some regions (sidecontent) and edited them to make a section I want on all 'home' type pages. When I make a new document from 'basic', it has all the same editable and repeating regions as 'basic'. But when I make a new document from 'home' there are no editable or repeating regions, either in 'sidecontent' which I edited or 'maincontent' which I didn't. I want to be able to edit 'maincontent' when I make a new document from 'home', to make repeating regions and edit them. Please can you advise me what to do?
ThanksWhen I tried to attach the files it automatically zipped them again, so I have put the code above.
Thanks,
Rachel -
Nested Repeat Regions in Dreamweaver 8
I am waying the option of upgrading from MX to 8 or just
getting MX Looper to do nested repeat regions. Any advice? Are

URGENTLY NEED HELP WITH NESTED REPEAT REGION
Im using dreamweaver to deevelop a page that displays questions in ann assessment to the user. First of all the page shows the assessment name to the user and then it gets some information about the questions in the assessment from the table called Item. It gets the Question_ID and then there is a repeat region which uses the Question_ID to display the questions in the assessment. There is a nested repeat region inside this which displays the possible answers the user can respond to the question with It gets this information from a table called outcome. The page should display each question and then all the possible answers but i am having problems and im not sure wether i am doing this in the correct way. What is wrong with my code? PLEASE HELP! can someone tell me what is going wrong and how i can fix this problem thamks.

Hope it helps -
I've got a page where I need nested repeat regions using the
same data.
Basically, list people who have donated money in groupings by
level:
$100-$199
Murray
Nadia
Thierry
$200-$299
Dan
Dan
Patty
I'm looking at Tom Muck's "Simulated Nested Region" extension
so I can do
this using one Recordset (seems silly to set up a recordset
for each
donation level) but the only problem is it looks like the
donation levels
have to sort in order to work, and they don't.
Anyone know of any other extensions or easy ways to make this
work?
Oh yeah.....MySQL and PHP.
Thanks!

How to remove Editable region from nested template?
I'm trying to remove an editable region from a nested
template while retaining it in the parent template. DW doesn't want
to let me do this.
Example:
- I've created an overall template call ALLPAGES.DWT
- In it, there's an editable region called "related links".
- The "related links" will stay the same for all my main
pages (welcome, news, info, etc), so I'd like to create a nested
template called MAINPAGES.DWT where the field is locked.
So here's what I did; I started a new page from ALLPAGES.DWT
and then I created a template MAINPAGES.DWT from it. Now I want to
remove the editable region "related links". According to the DW
manual, I should be able to highlight the region and go to
Modify > Templates > Remove Template Markup, but that
option is greyed out!
Apparenlty the only way of removing the editable region is to
create a smaller editable region within it. But that's unnecessary
and sloppy. How can I remove the region entirely?> This use of nested templates is very useful and very
simple and

I really disagree with this.

I spent quite a bit of time using them, tweaking them,
understanding them,
and watching the problems that others have had here on the
forum. My
compelling conclusion is that there is nothing you can do
with nested
templates that you cannot do more simply and with far less
trouble by using
other methods, some involving other kinds of template
regions, and some
involving simple use of Library items, or better, server-side
includes.

I assure you, it's based on much more study and experience
than you have put
into it.

This is not only unkind, it's completely erroneous. Far and
away, I am the
single most enthusiastic proponent for the use of templates
on these boards.

Contribute Acting strange - template parameters with repeating regions
Basically what I'm trying to achieve is that there is a
repeating region on a page, and each region is supposed to
alternate colors. To achieve this, the regions with the colors are
put into a div which has a background color applied to it. To do
this, I have created two expressions, one to check to see if it's
an even numbered region, and if so, to open the div, and another to
close the div. That looks like this:
quote:
<!-- TemplateBeginRepeat name="Article" -->
@@((_index & 1) ? shade : noshade )@@
stuff
@@((_index & 1) ? shadeend : noshade )@@
<!-- TemplateEndRepeat -->
At the top, I have three template parameters to go along with
these:
quote:
<!-- TemplateParam name="shade" type="text"
value="<div>" -->
<!-- TemplateParam name="shadeend" type="text"
value="</div>" -->
<!-- TemplateParam name="noshade" type="text" value=""
-->
Which look like this on the actual pages:
quote:
<!-- InstanceParam name="shade" type="text"
value="<div>" -->
<!-- InstanceParam name="shadeend" type="text"
value="</div>" -->
<!-- InstanceParam name="noshade" type="text" value=""
-->
The odd thing is that, when I add an editable region,
something weird occurs with the template parameters and they end up
looking like this:
quote:
<!-- InstanceParam name="shade" type="text"
value="<div>" --><!-- InstanceParam
name="shadeend" type="text" value="</div>"
-->->
<!-- InstanceParam name="noshade" type="text" value=""
-->
And that, of course, results in having a nice "->" showing
up at the top of my page. The repeating region appears to work. It
changes background colors just like it should, but I have no idea
why it's throwing in the "->" at the end.For grins, try changing this -
<div id="content1" style="display:none">
to this (IN THE TEMPLATE FILE) -
<div id="content@@(_repeat._index)@@''
style="display:none">
(that should be a " character after the last @ sign - I had
to use two '
characters to keep the code from getting munged in my
newsreader)

PDF Template (repeating regions) correct version of Adobe Acrobat
Hi,
I want to build a PDF template for a Payslip I am knocking up at the moment and have come to the conclusion this may be easier as a PDF template rather than an RTF template.
The reason being I have multiple repeating regions in the payslip (earnings, deductions, salary history, payments) all of which could overflow onto another sheet of stationary when the job is run. If you think RTF is a better solution please post and let me know how I should achieve this. Or indeed if you think PDF is wrong also please let me know.
So I want to build a PDF template to utilise its overflow handling but what version of Adobe acrobat do I then need? 9 is the current release and there is a "Standard", "Pro" and "Pro-Extended" version of the software each with escalating costs associated. I see in Tim's blog the PDF has to be in the 1.4 specification which all the versions since 5 seem to support.
If you need anymore info in order to please let me know.
Cheers
DougAgreed RTF is a lot simpler to create and maintain.
I cannot seem to get my RTF template to behave with overflowing properties my basic design is Below (excuse the odd way of displaying it but I'm sure you get the idea). So any 1 of 4 repeating groups could go over their limits (I have currently hardcoded the loop limit in the group). I need the basic Emp info the Address info and the random info on each sheet.
I've been around the forum and all over the net (Anil Passi's site, XML/BI Publisher Blog etc.) looking at the solutions people have used for invoices and PO's but I cannot seem to use them in my case.
Any help you or anyone else could give on the subject would be gratefully received.

Limit records in nested repeat region
I am using the nested repeat region behaviour and I need to limit the amount of records in the detail table.
in ADDT it guides you through a wizard for master and detail tables to use this nesting which works great but it also returns all the records in the detail. I would like to limit the amount.
I tried modifying the query by adding
$maxRows_detail4tbl_products = 4;
$pageNum_detail4tbl_products = 0;
if (isset($_GET['pageNum_detail4tbl_products'])) {
$pageNum_detail4tbl_products = $_GET['pageNum_detail4tbl_products'];
$startRow_detail4tbl_products = $pageNum_detail4tbl_products * $maxRows_detail4tbl_products;
still returns all rows. any help is greatly appreciated.In the Application Panel, select the tab Biddings
dbclick Recordset Detail. Click the Advanced button, in the last SQL command ORDER BY
You add LIMIT 0,4 -
Error adding editable region in nested template Header
I have a base template for the website (establishing basic
menus), and a secondary template using that base template, which
establishes a common table layout for one part of the site. Having
created the PHP to drive the page, I need to lock down that
secondary nested region - otherwise any edit I make to my secondary
"table-defining" template is not passed through
to the final pages using the secondary template. I have
successfully created a secondary editable region in each part of
the <body> area, and sure enough, it locks down text
outside the secondary editable region just as DW help says it
should. So far so good.
Now the problem - I cannot create a region inside the
<head> editable region to lock down that region too.
Normally one would want keywords and so on to be variable from page
to page, but as I am filling variable keywords from a database, it
makes sense to lock down the <head> too. Does anyone
know why that generates an error "cannot create an
optional region here"? Is there anything that can be done
about it?Posts are hard to read when they are all crammed together
like yours. Try
making some paragraphs!
Nevertheless, I think I understand what you are saying., but
honestly, I
just wouldn't do it that way. Anymore, my templates are just
one editable
region in the body, and a bunch of server-side includes. I
find nested
templates much too complex, and troublesome to work with, and
have really
never found a scenario where I could do things with them that
I could not do
more easily with other methods.
> However, I have an Editable
> region with the HTML Head area, and DW does not permit
me to add a
> 'secondary-template Editable Region' within it to lock
it down.
Is it only you working on the site? Who are you trying to
'lock down'? If
it's only you, I'd forget about this. Invariably the things
like this that
you think are a good idea come back later to bite you.

I am new to working with DW templates but am trying to set up
a site for a client who will edit in Contribute. I'd like to set
these up using templates so the client won't inadvertently mess up
the formatting.
However, I'm running into a problem setting up a template for
an Events listing. I need to have a repeatable region for each
month of events she will add and then inside each month, a
repeating region for each event within that month. So far, I have
not been able to make this work.
Is something like this possible? This doesn't seem that
advanced or sophisticated so perhaps I am just missing something?
Thanks for any advice."choirellie" <[email protected]> wrote in

but that repeating region info would have to come from a
database, which
would need its own form page for updates/additions/deletions,
etc... and you
said you weren't going to use a database yet... so doesn't
that boil down to
"why do a repeating region" since they're going to manually
enter it anyway? -
Dreamweaver CS3
ASP / VBScript
Hi,
I'm trying to create a nested repeat region to display a list
of categories
and, in brackets afterwards, a count of the number of
sub-categories
contained in it E.g.
Cats (12)
Dogs (43)
Fish (92)
Etc
I have managed to create my repeat region ok because as soon
as I drop a
field in from the recordset, it loops through them all and
displays them
correctly. However, when I try and simply write out the total
number of
records found, it doesn't display anything.
Recordset 1 is a straighforward select from the table.
Recordset 2 adds a
WHERE clause usinga variable based on the 1st recordset. Here
is the code
i'm using for the 2 recordsets:
Recordset 1 :
<%
Dim Level1
Dim Level1_cmd
Dim Level1_numRows
Set Level1_cmd = Server.CreateObject ("ADODB.Command")
Level1_cmd.ActiveConnection = MM_SemiDirectory_STRING
Level1_cmd.CommandText = "SELECT * FROM TBL_Level1 ORDER BY
[Description]
ASC"
Level1_cmd.Prepared = true
Set Level1 = Level1_cmd.Execute
Level1_numRows = 0
%>
Recordset 2 :
<%
Dim Level2__varLink
Level2__varLink = "1"
If (level1.fields.item("Level1_ID").value <> "") Then
Level2__varLink = level1.fields.item("Level1_ID").value
End If
%>
<%
Dim Level2
Dim Level2_cmd
Dim Level2_numRows
Set Level2_cmd = Server.CreateObject ("ADODB.Command")
Level2_cmd.ActiveConnection = MM_SemiDirectory_STRING
Level2_cmd.CommandText = "SELECT * FROM TBL_Level2 WHERE
Level1_ID = ? ORDER
BY Level1_ID ASC"
Level2_cmd.Prepared = true
Level2_cmd.Parameters.Append
Level2_cmd.CreateParameter("param1", 5, 1, -1,
Level2__varLink) ' adDouble
Set Level2 = Level2_cmd.Execute
Level2_numRows = 0
%>
Now for the repeated code :
<%
While ((Repeat1__numRows <> 0) AND (NOT Level1.EOF))
%>
<li><a
href="category.asp?level1=<%=(Level1.Fields.Item("Level1_ID").Value)%>"><%=(Level1.Fields .Item("Description").Value)%>
(<%=(Level2_total)%>)
</li></a>
<%
Repeat1__index=Repeat1__index+1
Repeat1__numRows=Repeat1__numRows-1
Level1.MoveNext()
Wend
%>
Can anyone tell me what I need to do to this code to make it
display the
number of sub-categories?
Thanks!!!Ok folks,
I found a way to get what I want. It's not pretty as I had to
make an extra
query in the database (that select of the count of all child
table results
for each parent category) and am pulling from that but it
works and that's
the main thing. I'm sure there is a more effective way of
doing it but
that's life!
I'm still interested in knowing the 'proper' way (if there is
such a thing)
so if you have the time to show me, i'm all ears!
Cheers!

3 level nested repeat region?
hi all,
I tried to follow the ADDT tutorial related to creatìng 3 level nested
repeat region.
All is ok and I can list all continend, countries and cities.
But, how can I show only continent and countries that have cities set and
hide all those continents and countries that do not contains any city?
Example:
EUROPE
France
Paris
Spain
Madrid
ITALY
Germany
Monaco
In this example, how can I hide the ITALY country? Or how can I hide entire
continent/countries with no city set yet?
TIA
tonyCiao Tony,
you´ll most probably just need to add the IS NOT NULL comparison function to the query´s WHERE clause, example:
WHERE city IS NOT NULL
http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/comparison-operators.html
