Net Volumes Mount But Shared Printer Not Seen

Hi,
I have a USB printer on my MacBook which is shared. I also have, on the same network, a Man Mini (G4) which can mount volumes on my MacBook but it simply does not recognise that there are any printers available.
Is there anything I'm doing wrong or something I should be checking? if nothing worked, I'd be looking at the network, but since volumes are mounting, I'm stuck as to what it could be.
Both machines are on the same subnet with AppleTalk enabled with Automatic configuration.
Thanks in advance if anybody can shed light on this for me.

First - appletalk isn't used for any OS X to OS X sharing (neither file nor printer sharing).
Do you have printer sharing on, on the computer with the printer?

The idea to jumpstart by change was not the smartest one, but gives you an opportunity to use that "temporary" account as permanent. You do not have a choice cause obviously despite you thinking that old account is no more -it does exist on Apple servers. And if you are unwilling to share your [email protected] with friend, just create one extra [email protected] for your friend. One suggestion - do not use gmail.

  • Shared printer not working (most of the time)

I have a Mac Pro running Snow Leopard using a shared Epson R380 printer connected to a G5 (running Leopard) . Most of the time it doesn't work, but occasionally it will. On the Mac Pro, the Epson monitor says "print job accepted" but doesn't change. On the G5, the Epson monitor shows the print job, but says "job stopped". When trying to resume the job, a warning box pops up on the G5 saying "Operation C0uld Not Be Completed - client-error-not-possible".
The shared printer works fine (most of the time, too) with another networked Mac, a Mac mini G4 running Leopard.
All OS's are the latest possible.

Sharing between Leopard and Snowleopard does not work reliably. For this reason, we do not recommend mixing Operating Systems.
    Hope this helps,
    Syd

  • Shared printer not printing

I have a Canon iP4700 connected by usb to my new iMac (21.5) and setup as a shared printer. It prints perfectly from the iMac but other computers on the network (Windows PCs) can see the printer (I set them up using the Bonjour wizard as the normal Windows Add Printer wizard was not reliable) and load the printer interface but when they print, the pages come out blank. I have the correct printer driver installed on the Windows computers. When I had a Windows computer connected to the printer all the computers (3 others) could print to the printer without any problem.
I have tried a print server (Netcomm NP3680) but the iMac keeps dropping the printer into pause mode using the Canon driver but the PreFab driver will print (but does not show ink levels etc). Have also tried the print share feature of the Belkin modem/router but this is also unreliable as it drops connection.
Any ideas on how to get the print to actually print something on the page from the other computers when set up as a shared printer on the Mac?

I had a similar problem with my Canon MP280 when I connected it to my new iMac, shared it on the network and tried to print from a Windows 7 laptop.
The Bonjour wizard set up the printer fine, I could connect and send things to print, but the printer simply ejected a blank page for each job.
I found a number of suggestions about clearing the printer subsystem or other uninstall-and-reinstall type tricks, but none of these worked. I tried many different orders of installing things, even turning off the wireless assistant software on the PC. (Seriously, that was a suggestion in one thread.) All to no avail. What does work for me, I found, was pretty counter-intuitive: Choose the wrong printer driver.
On my Windows 7 PC, I opened the list of printers and right-clicked the printer Bonjour had created, and opened the printer properties. In the properties window I selected the advanced tab, and clicked on the new driver button. There, I selected the HP Color LaserJet Series 2800 PS. I clicked OK and tried out printing, and it worked perfectly.
It seems the trick is picking a postscript printer driver (that's what the PS stands for). I suspect any number of fairly generic PS printer drivers would work. From what I read on the web, it seems that the system Apple uses for sharing printers automatically supports postscript, even (possibly?) for non-postscript printers. This is helpful when the driver provided by the manufacturer doesn't actually work, which seems to be the case for some Canon printers at least.
I don't get ink level reporting, but I'll trade being able to print something for knowing how much ink is left any day.
Note: When you set up a printer using Bonjour on Windows, it may not give you a choice of printer drivers. (I think it skips this step if you already have a matching printer driver installed.) You can still change the printer driver used with the printer later. If it does give you a list, well maybe you should try the manufacturer's printer first, just in case it works.
Now if only I could get AirPrint to work with this printer from my iPad... :-/ (Not holding out much hope for that one.)

  • Shared printer not working

I have set up the shared printer on my iMac in my room. I am trying to print from my husbands iMac in the living room. It is acting like it is going to print but when I try to print the printer queue comes up and it pauses the print job. When I select resume it says "Printing- 1.6.2 is ready to print." then it pauses again.
I tried setting the printer up multiple times from the living room and when I do it says the address is "valid and complete host name or address" then when I'm done and click "Add" it tells me "Unable to verify the printer on your network." "Unable to connect to 'Mycomputer-name-example.local’ due to an error. Would you still like to create the printer?" cancel or continue.
Also I installed the printer software on both computers so that shouldn't be the issue.
Please help me this is so **** annoying.

Okay. So you, like many others, have an issue with Bonjour - the protocol that advertises a networked printer (and a shared printer) on a local network.
In testing to see if you can add a shared printer using IPP or HTTP, I keep getting errors. At first it appeared to be a driver issue, as changing the client Mac to use the Generic Postscript driver instead of the latest Canon driver would deliver the job to the iMac sharing the printer without error. But the print job fails to complete - the print queue shows "Hold for authentication". I will keep testing this workaround and get back to you.
In the meantime, is the iMac in the living room also running Yosemite? If not, then as a test, if you have the printer connected to this iMac and shared, does your iMac running Yosemite see the shared printer via the Default add printer view? And if yes, then can you add it and then print?

  • Trouble connecting iMac to wireless networked HP printer -- printer not seen in

I am trying to connect a new Mac with OSX 10.9.5 to an HP Photosmart Premium c410, which is on an existing home wireless network and functions properly with other (Windows) computers in the house. I am following online instructions to enter the Apple System Preferences>Printers and Scanners>+ menu in order to add the printer, but the printer is not visible. If I use the "print sheet," the HP printer shows as a grayed out option and a message that the printer has been offline for more than a month. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

  • Shared printer not showing in list

My husband and I both have mac g4's, connected over usb network. We both recently updated to 10.48. The printer is connected to usb hub on with his printer. Everything was fine til we updated operating systems. Now the printer stopped showing in my printer listing. It prints when connected directly to either computer. Did everything manual and books said about printer sharing. Both downloaded latest drivers. It's an HP Photosmart 3200.
    Thanks!

    Hi Kathy,
Generally the updates affect the permissions on files, so that is why the Repair Disk Permissions can resolve printing problems.
    Given that you are using TCP/IP to connect to each other, then you would be using the same protocol to view and connect to the shared printer. What you can do next is open the CUPS printer page of your computer to see if the shared printer is visible. Do the following;
    1. Open your Internet browser, such as Safari.
    2. For the address, type
    http://127.0.0.1:631/printers
    and hit Enter.
    This should show the printers installed on your computer and the printers shared on his Mac (Tamo). If it doesn't show his shared printer, type the following;
    http://ipaddress:631/printers/sharename
    Note that you need to replace ip_address with the IP address of your husbands Mac (Tamo) and 'shared_printer' with the shared name of the printer. So the address should look something like this;
    http://192.168.44.47:631/printers/HP3200
If you are not sure of the shared name you can check this by clicking on Network Preferences > Print & Fax > Sharing.
Doing the above in the browser should make the CUPS page for the shared HP appear. If it does then we are a step closer in working this out.
Let me know how you go...
    Regards,
    Paul

  • USB shared printer not showing up in 10.5.8 default list

Ugh - so I've spent half a day Googling and reading stuff but so far - no joy. I'm trying to print to a Brother HL-5240 printer connected via USB to a G4 Power Mac running 10.5.8 (I could print from all my machines when everything was running 10.4.11 - this is why I put off upgrading ... ) - and here's the rub:
    - printer sharing is turned 'on' on that host G4 server that the printer is directly connected to via USB
    - a 2.1GHz G5 iMac running 10.5.8 on my network (LAN) sees the printer when I go to add a printer from sys prefs and it shows up in the default list - I can print to it
    - a G4 1.5GHz PB (wi-fi), a G5 2.0GHz DP Power Mac (LAN) and an Intel Mac Mini (LAN) all running 10.5.8 cannot see the printer - it doesn't show up in the default list on any of those machines
    - I have installed the drivers (both CUPS and PostScript) directly from Brother's site, along w/ an update also from Brother's site on all machines
    - I tried to run the firmware update from Brother's site but it informed me my HL-5240 has the most up-to-date firmware so it was not needed
    - when I plug the printer into USB on my G4 PB mentioned above to test, the G4 Power Mac host server can see it - but not the other way around (???)
I am frustrated out of my mind and totally stumped. If it didn't work at all, that'd be one thing - but that a G5 iMac can see and print to it perfectly, but none of my other machines (G4, G5 and Intel) can is *%$&#^$ messed up (that and how it worked plugged in to my PB but not the other way around) - so it's clearly being shared OK by the G4 Power Mac server. But why can only one of four machines see and print to it?
Any suggestions would be über-awesome - Terminal commands, whatever. I just want to be able to print - blasted 10.5 ...
    cheers

What happens when you click onto "Finder" at the top left corner of the screen and choose "Preferences"? Do you see servers connected to? anything missing there? maybe fiddle around with those general settings?
You can also just ctrl-click on the shared folder in finder and make an alias. That's the way i'd do it.

  • Shared printer not visible on network

I have an Epson WF-3520 and i originally tried connecting it directly to the internet but everytime it went to sleep the computer would no longer be able to connect to the printer and i would have to turn off the printer delete it from the computer and re-add the printer everytime i wanted to print! I gave up on that and connected it to my iMac via USB and then turned on printer sharing on the iMac. When i try to connect to the printer from my Macbook Pro it is not listed anywhere. Does anyone have a solution to either of these problems? Preferably the second as even Epson didnt know what was wrong with the first issue...
    Thanks,
    James

Besides turning on Printer Sharing, you also have to check the box marked Share this printer on the network in the Print & Scan preference pane. If you did that, disable the built-in firewall and also all third-party firewall or security software that you may have installed.

  • Booting my imac from an external firewire drive suddenly stopped working. Disk still mounts but it will not boot the machine!

I took my MacBook Pro in for repairs and erased the drive for safety AFTER having copied the entire contents to an external firewire 800 drive using SuperDuper!
The copy process made the disk bootable and I was able to boot up my iMac and run it just as if I were working on my MacBook Pro. After a couple of times working this way, the iMac stopped booting from my drive.
The drive shows up when starting up by pressing the option key but then, after a long time, the iMac shows a circle/slash symbol as if it can't find the system files.
If I restart without pressing the option key, the disk mounts on the desktop and I can use it as an external drive just fine!  I tried selecting it in System Preferences as the startup disk, but the same thing happens, blank grey screen with the circle/slash.
Since this happened with a Seagat drive - a brand that has failed me in the past many times - I thought it was a disk problem. I had backed up my MacBook pro contents to another Toshiba drive, and booted from there perfectly well for a couple of times...
Until the same thing happened! Thank God I didn't trash the Seagate although it makes very faint clicking noises that will keep me far away from using it again anyway... but that's another story!
iMac runs 10.5.8, the boot disk (and my MacBook) runs on 10.6.8 if that makes any difference... And now I'm scared that when I copy back to my MacBook Pro it might not boot up at all!!!
    What gives???

You need to reinstall Snow Leopard onto the external drive:
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    Do the following:
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install the Combo Updater for the version you prefer from support.apple.com/downloads/.

  • Volume mounting, but missing from Server app

After reconfiguring my MDC (which had something screwed up in OD), I'm having an issue with my Xsan volume listing in Server app. It shows that Xsan is up and running, but the volumes window is blank. I was able to successfully add a backup MDC and they both are able to find each other without issue, however neither the MDC or backup MDC show the volume in the window. They do, however, both mount the volume without issue.
There is one issue, that I know of, that I'm pretty sure this is causing an issue for. Whenever I add the profile to a new client machine the volume does not mount without forcing a mount using "xsanctl mount Media". Once mounted, there are no problems that I can tell, however I haven't used it with this issue long enough to tell. Essentially it seems like it can find the volume, it just doesn't know that it's available without telling it to look for it. I've searched for a long time to try to find a config file that may control this behavior, but I can't identify anything yet. If anyone knows what file controls the display of the volumes or how to fix this issue I would appreciate the help. Also, I already have 25TB on this volume so destroying/recreating it is not really an option I would like to explore.

It would seem that the Xsan configuration stored in LDAP does not include your volume. You could try these steps to resync the configuration files stored in /Library/Preferences/Xsan and the configuration in LDAP:
Important: Make a backup copy of the /Library/Preferences/Xsan directory on each MDC.
If I'm right about LDAP not including your volume, the secondary won't have any .cfgp file in its /Library/Preferences/Xsan directory--unless you put it there.
Remove the secondary MDC from the SAN.
    On the primary MDC:
Check that your volume name appears in /Library/Preferences/Xsan/fsmlist. See the fsmlist(4) man page for details. You will have to use the full path to that man page, e.g. "man /System/Library/Filesystems/acfs.fs/Contents/man/man4/fsmlist.4".
Update the LDAP configuration with: "sudo xsanctl pushConfigUpdate". See the xsanctl(8) man page for more information. ("man xsanctl")
Your existing volumes should reappear in Server app when you do this. You may need to do command-R to refresh the view. If you don't see your volume, review the output of "xsanctl pushConfigUpdate" to see if it explains what failed.
Add the secondary MDC back to the SAN.
Assuming pushConfigUpdate worked, the secondary MDC should automatically mount your volume when you add it. The same should happen for any additional clients you add to the SAN.

  • I have home sharing on but sharing is not an option on either computer

I have my itunes library on a Vista PC and have a Wireless Cicso router and am trying to share the library on my Windows 7 PC.  I have home sharing turned on on both PC's.  I have authorized both computers.  The sharing option does not show up in itunes.  When I look a preferences it says sharing on no users.  The network name is the same on both PC's.  It does however shw up on my ipad.  I cannot find any online help to further troubleshoot this issue.

Sorry, but there is no iTunes Store for Guernsey. As a crown dependency rather than a full part of the UK, the licensing for the content in the UK iTunes Store doesn't apply to Guernsey nor Jersey, so you can't use that Store.

  • USB printer not seen wirelessly on Airport Express through Airport Extreme

    Hey everyone,
I just bought an Airport extreme and a new Airport express for my house. I've got the Extreme in the basement where it is sending out wifi and directly plugged into a PS3 and the new Airport Express, which is 2 floors upstairs. The Express is upstairs In my office where it extends my wifi and also plugs into my iMac. I took the USB cable from the Samsung laser printer ('07 SCX-4521) from the back of the iMac and plugged it into the USB port on the Express so I could print wirelessly without having the iMac always on. I changed the settings on the iMac print preferences to now recognize the new location of the printer as being on the Airport Express. I tried to print a page from the iMac and had no problem, however I tried to print from my iPhone 4S and the printer wasn't even listed. I don't have the phone jailbroken, and all software on all machines and accessories are up to date, etc., so is there something obvious they I'm missing here? Can anyone help me out, please? The whole point of the Express was to allow me to print wirelessly and not have to move the printer to a bedroom in the basement.
    Thanks in advance!

Are you saying that the iPhone will print when the printer is connected to your iMac?
Or, will the iPhone not print when the printer is connected to your iMac?
The iPhone will not print when the printer is connected to the Airport Express.
Check this Apple support document to see if your printer is AirPrint compatible.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4356
If you find that the printer is not on the list of compatible devices, simply connecting it to the AirPort Express will not make it AirPrint compatible.
This is what I was afraid of. I talked to 2-3 Apple employees in the store and they said that most printers that can be used when directly connected to the USB port of a MB Pro, iMac, etc., would also be compatible with the Airport Express and would in turn make the printer AirPrint compatible. Obviously they were totally wrong. The printer itself has to be Airprint compatible and there really is no documentation in the new Airport Express Setup Guide or on the webpage that states that. My printer isn't Airprint compatible, therefore the ability to use this as a network printer on the Airport Express is useless. My only option is to connect it directly to the iMac and keep the iMac running (which is what I wanted to avoid).
Thanks for your help. Hopefully Apple can just come out and say this on the Airport Express box or on the AE website, as I guarantee I'm not the only one who wanted this capability. Other than that, both the Extreme and Express work very well and are simple to use, but I think I'll be taking back the Express as the Extreme's range is great.
