NetAuthAgent causing crash/freeze.....

I have a problem with my laptop totally freezing whenever I try to connect to an external network drive.
This post explained the problem:
http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=6412555#6412555
I have now discovered it appears to a process called NetAuthAgent causing the crash and I'm getting the following errors posted in a few logs in console:
22/01/2008 6:19:32 pm /System/Library/CoreServices/NetAuthAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/NetAuthAgent139 CPSGetProcessInfo(): This call is deprecated and should not be called anymore.
22/01/2008 6:19:32 pm
/System/Library/CoreServices/NetAuthAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/NetAuthAgent139 CPSPBGetProcessInfo(): This call is deprecated and should not be called anymore.
Anyone have any idea what's going on?

I couldn't disagree more - there are many many reports in various forums of people having various problems with using SMB networking under Leopard - all of who report no problems when previously under Tiger.
Your really don't expect your networking ability to take a backwards step when upgrading to a new version of your system software.....
it would be one thing if the issue with with some really out-dated legacy product (some ancient tape drive or something), but in this case the majority of problems appear to have been with true network based drives - these are becoming more and more common - heck! - even Apple are now making their own version to run on time machine - this is an increasingly common technology and a major oversight of beta testing to not detect the problem - or even manage to fix it by 10.5.1
Don't get me wrong - i have been an apple fan since my LCIII and System 7! - I went with them as we migrated to PowerPC chips - and then into unix- and now intel.
Each software migration has been amazingly good and stress free.
I currently have several issues with Leopard - all of which that worked fine under Tiger - and only some of which have been fixed with 10.5.2 - I have never been so disappointed. I am also aware that there are many other people who feel jut as strongly about being unofficial beta testers for leopard.
I have always noticed that whenever Apple took us all on an software upgrade there were always unhappy people - but this time there seems to be more than ever - and even people erasing Leopard and reverting to Tiger again.
For now I can't face a reinstall - so I will continue to put up with the problems I've been having with Leopard - and thank the lord I don't rely on macs for my daily business - if I had been relying on my computers for an income the nightmares I've had with Leopard (and hours of time lost putting things right) would have been a serious issue.
So yes - I remain an apple fan - but I think they have to accept criticism when due - and Leopard appears very much to have been released prematurely - and at a time when Vista was attracting sooooooo much bad press I reckon it should have been the A1 top priority to make sure that when Leopard was released it was immaculate (or pretty close to it).
As it was you had most major mac publications (in the UK at least) and several mac online sites issuing warnings about upgrading for far too many months after release.
I used to enjoy my listening to windows user bemoaning their lot and complaining they thought Microsoft built-in designed problems to force continual upgrading to ever more complicated and unreliable leaky OS software..... and I could just say - well, I use an Apple mac!
But this time - it was a real opportunity to spread the apple good news gone begging.
On the plus side - 10.5.2 appears to be making progress towards redeeming itself!... but there are still some big issues.
(as a final note - this is another of the many examples where broadband had made sloppy programming acceptable - there was a time when I relied on cover discs on mac magazines to get my software updates since I had no internet access..... or then when I had dial-up and a 100mb update was a really big deal - in those days software had to be right (or pretty much so- FIRST time) - these days you just chuck it out the door knowing that if its all wrong the miracle of broadband and an automated software updater will get you out of problems..... so why bother paying people to test - let them buy the product and dix the problems as they occur!)

  • Using DW CS6 and PS CS6 "file info" causes crash+freeze

Each time I try to use "File Info" in Photoshop or Dreamweaver CS6, a freeze, or crash is the result, and must force quit. Can't seem to find any specifics using keyword search of similar problem.
The only thing I've done different lately is I've had to work with some 1.5+ GB images. Six MB ram held up okay, only slowing on some filters and a few tools, specifically the clone tool.
    Mac Pro (Early 2009)
    6 GB 1066 MHz
    OS X 10.8.5
    Thanks in advance...

Did find from your path directions; however, the date of the last report is from 04/21/2013 and don't remember what activity was taking place, only that these recent freezes on using "File/File Info" repeatedly has only occurred over the last two days.
As I stated previously, I had to physically initiate a "force quit" the application when above action opened a blank window with the only function available to me being the "expand" green icon button, and was not asked to submit crash report. Therefore, I'm assuming now, if no report goes out to Adobe, then none is saved in the crash report logs.
Your response is helpful though in expanding my personal knowledge base, as I had never had a reason to research said reports up to this time. Over my twenty years of using Mac's and Adobe products for my personal use I've had remarkably few serious incidents.
I certainly couldn't gain any information from viewing the report. HTML and CSS I'm comfortable with, but this (system inner workings) might as well be written in Latin.
I do thank you for your attempt to help, and as I said, I have learned a little bit more; just not enough to attempt brain surgery yet.

  • Why I-Photo would keep Crashing/ Freezing on me and causing me to force quit.

why I-Photo would keep Crashing/ Freezing on me and causing me to force quit.

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • Tecra M3 video drivers causing crashes

My Toshiba Tecra M3 is crashing (freezing or blue screen of death) with drivers 71.14, 71.36, and 76.44. It uses an NVIDIA GeForce Go 6600 TE 128M. When I uninstall all video drivers (or boot into safe mode), the laptop runs fine, although of course scrolling is deadly slow and I can't suspend or hibernate. But when I install either of the two WHQL certified drivers from Toshiba's site, 71.44 or 71.36, I can consistently create a crash just by running a 3D screensaver for more than 3 minutes. The same thing happens with the 76.44 non-WHQL driver from laptopvideo2go.com.
Sorry if this is not the best thread to post on, but I would desperately appreciate any help you can offer on what driver might work reliably. At this point, I'm not at all interested in great graphics performance; I just want a stable laptop to do some work on. Is there perhaps some setting within the driver to turn off whatever fancy features are causing the crash?
The laptop has a 2.13 GHz Pentium M and 2 GB of RAM. It's running WinXP SP2 with all updates and is using BIOS 1.20, the latest. And I doubt it's a related, but here's a different problem I ran into with the VPN, Wi-Fi, and Matlab.
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

    Hi danhkon
I suppose that your notebook worked properly at the beginning. Can you maybe remember since when the unit started to make these troubles to you? It is not easy to give you a proper opinion or any kind of solution because every problem is caused by some reason.
First of all I want to say that you should use just display driver given by Toshiba and not some driver that you found on the net. The drivers that you got on Tools & utilities CD or drivers that you can find on Toshiba site are all tested and they should work properly. As far as I know Tecra M3 is a new model and also delivered with SP2. That means that all drivers are also tested to work properly with SP2.
Before you spend lot of times searching the right solution you should, in my opinion, save your data and reinstall OS using Recovery CD. On this way you will have a stable laptop to do some work on it. If there is no second partition you can make it for data saving using expert mode installation.

  • ITunes Causing System Freezes

After playing a CD or listening to my music library for a while, I get random freezes; eg spinning beachball in iTunes. It happens when an album is finished or a playlist is finished and I go back to iTunes to eject or quit or play a new playlist. Freezes. When I try to click Apple (in order to click on Force Quit), it isn't available...the beachball rules. The only thing I can do with the cursor is click on Finder in the Dock; or the desktop area outside of open apps. Cmnd+Q doesn't work. Cmnd+esc doesn't work. CmndoptnQ doesn't work. Cmndoptnesc brings up the force quit dialogue. That leads to a "force finder to quit?" dialogue. A couple times I've had to resort to hard rebooting.
Suggestions would be appreciated; but another issue is the fact that this is causing system freezes and I was under the impression that the cool thing about OS X is that one app won't cause system freezes.
There's another similar thread titled 'it crashes', but system freezes aren't mentioned.
    Any ideas?

Still doing it...but I give up on getting any help.

  • T410s Optimus: Crashing/Freezing/Bugs in association with Minidock+External Displays

    Hi There.
Because my new Thinkpad T410s 2912WA6 (Optimus) and it's Bugs Features are quite time-consuming while i would need a reliable system to get things done, (that is why i spent over 1800 Euros on dock+thinkpad), i have to make it short.
    1) optimus driver (nvidia/intel) crashing freezing bluescreening while docked and full hd displays over dvi attached, even still in 8.17.12.6802/8.15.10.
8.17.12.5738/8.15.10.2154 or whatever C:/SWTOOLS contains and what was installed on delivery works fine. plz fix.
    2) want to see boot screen of my t410s optimus while docked on dvi display attached to dock. not possible for now. plz fix.
    3) i guess docking station is designed to free some space on my desk --> dock + thinkpad far away from desk --> want to wake thinkpad up by pressing a key on my usb wireless keyboard attached to dock --> does not work --> pain in my back, pain in my mind.
    plz fix.
okay...maybe too short, here some more detailed information:
    1) Most annoying bug is the new always everything crashing nvidia optimus driver. As discussed in many other threads, there are rough problems with high DPC, freezes, blue screens. For me, i could identify nvlddmkm.sys as source of high DPC, while i had no time or not the knowledge to investigate on freezes or bluescreens.
In Fact: My T410s, bought in november 2010 was working fine, and i had no problems aswell as i started using a mini dock plus series 3 in combination with 2 Full HD 24'' Displays on the 2 DVI Ports on the Minidock.
In March 2011, Lenovo Update Software installed an update on the Graphics Driver (this may not mean the Driver Update was released at this date, i just ran the Update Software for the first time) was installed, the corresponding line in the Installation Protocol is:
    "Thinkpad Video Features[NVIDIA NVS 3100M Optimus] for Windows 7 64bit | 8.17.12.5738/8.15.10.2202"
Interestingly i think the Nvidia driver version-nr didnt change, while the intel hd driver-nr was 8.15.10.2154 before.
From that day on, with increasing frequency, win7 started to freeze, in random situations but almost always while using it docked with 1 or 2 24" displays attached on DVI, nearly never when undocked. Aswell i just saw a black screen when switching youtube videos to full screen, same issue described by other users. The Flash-fullscreen issue was fixed after installing 8.17.12.6802, inoffically posted by Jamez in another thread. However, the freezing continued and i got a blue screen everytime i sent my T410s to Standby Mode while docked, no problem undocked.
After that, i luckily found out that under C:\SWTOOLS all drivers thet were installed on delivery can be found. I installed the "old" nvidia and intel hd drivers, since that, THANK THE LORD, no freezing anymore, everything works fine.
What i want to tell here: For me its ok to use these old drivers for the rest of my life and i dont have any motivation to give any grahpics driver update another chance, but i guess there are other users out there, struggling with this issues so you might better send them working drivers for optimus/nvidia systems.
    2) an annoying fact aswell, and after searching google and this forum for "t410(s) optimus boot display" i dont believe that this is an individual error for me that can be resolved by recovery or similiar suicide attempts. Short and crisp: it is impossible to see the boot screen on my external Displays when Thinkpad is docked and Optimus is activated.
Of course, there is a BIOS setting, allowing me to select the Boot Display, and it proudly tells me i can selected "Digital 1/Digital 2" for the Dock-DVI Ports, but when selecting this Option, i only have the choice between VGA, Internal, and HDMI (Digital on Thinkpad). No Digital 1, no Digital 2. As others told me, Digital 1/2 can be selected as soon as you switch from "optimus" to "descrete". But guess what, i bought a optimus system so i want to use it. I hope this can be fixed by a new BIOS-Version or any other kind of update.
    3) obviously, it is not possible to wake up a sleeping and docked t410s remotely, especially by wireless keyboard. First thing is, of course, i DONT want to attach the usb keyboard receiver directly to the thinkpad/yellow usb port. If i do so, i dont need a docking station anymore because i have this docking station for fast undocking without removing extra cables. Second interesting thing: Despite of my wish to have no cables directly attached to my thinkpad, i tried it on the yellow usb slot. my usb receiver was working (blinking) while thinkpad was in standby mode, but nevertheless, it didnt wake up on pressing keyboard/mouse. i have set the right settings in device manager.
So, excuse my bad english, im from germany so it is quite hard for me to write down all this in english. I would appreciate comments from other users, experiencing the same problems/bugs, aswell as what lenovo staff has to say about it. thanks for your attention.

    ThinkMIke/Lenovo staff:
Did you ever solve the problem?  I am experiencing something similar.  Somewhat similar hardware setup: T410 w/ optimus + Minidock 3 + two external monitors (using DVI and VGA ports); laptop closed.  Long ago, I "bit the bullet" and plugged wireless keyboard/mouse dongle into laptop USB port to enable waking from sleep via keybaord/mouse...painful, but used to suffice; would not work with dongle plugged into Minidock.   More recently, I have been fighting Optimus bugs that cause my system to freeze every ten minutes or so.  Recently tried switching off Optimus in BIOS. This eliminates the freezes, but now my system cannot be woken from sleep at all, and once "sleeping" eventually shuts down. (In fact, the system doesn't seem to really sleep...the fan seems to continue to run.)  This problem now persists even if I turn Optimus back on in BIOS...I seem to have moved the system to a new and different unstable state.  Any insights?
    Thanks!
    Eric

  • MBP 2011 Crash/Freeze/Restart

Recently, my 15-inch, Early 2011 MacBook Pro has started crashing/freezing/restarting/whatever-the-right-terminology-is. It's a 2GHz Intel Core i7,  8GB 1333MHz DDR3 RAM (I upgraded it). Graphics card is AMD Radeon HD 6490M 256MB, or the Intel 3000 that comes integrated. 500GB HDD. I'm running OS X 10.9.4.
What happens is one of several things: it stops whatever it was doing and shows me a screen that has thin, vertical green and black stripes on it. It stays like this until I shut down the computer by hitting the power button. No keys or moving the mouse does anything. Sometimes, it will show graphical glitches that change for about 5 seconds before freezing on one and forcing me to shut down the computer. The last two times it has frozen, the screen just went black. The screen was still on, it just showed all black. Again, nothing I can do will unfreeze it, I have to shut it down.
It has shut down under several circumstances: I am playing a videogame, such as Hearthstone or Civ V (always with lowest graphics settings and not in fullscreen), watching Netflix/YouTube, or recently, just browsing the internet or typing on Skype. The problem started occurring only when I had been using the laptop for a few hours. Now, it will do this even if I have only used it for 15-30 minutes. It doesn't occur all of the time, so I've been having trouble determining the cause.
I called AppleCare, and they had me do some sort of re-route where I shut down the computer and held down a few keys before restarting it. This did not fix the problem.
If anyone can provide me with some help, that would be great. I can provide more details and answer any questions.
    Thanks!

If there is nothing else shown on the page other than your verified purchase date and that your limited warranty has expired, then I would guess that it is not covered. Your best bet, just to be sure would be to contact Apple and have them check manually.
The serial number of each machine is unique and can identify when the MacBook Pro was manufactured, which is how Apple decide whether or not your machine is eligible for cover within the extension program as it only covers machines manufactured from and to a certain date.
The symptoms on the repair extension page are as follows:
Distorted or scrambled video on the computer screen
No video on the computer screen (or external display) even though the computer is on
    Computer restarts unexpectedly
The fact that you've described that your MacBook Pro restarts with GPU Panic errors would imply that it is actually experiencing the issue covered by the extension program, so I would contact Apple and find out whether or not it is covered by the extension program.

  • Dreamweaver crashes/freezes when doing find in site

When I use "find" it works fine for a single document but, if I choose "find next" after setting the search to the entire site (or a folder), it performs the search and starts to bring up the correct file, then it crashes.  Behavior is the rainbow wheel of death indefinitately.  I have to force quit and restart.
I have reproduced this about a dozen times.
I quit DW, trashed my cache file, emptied the trash, and restarted.  This has made no change.  I have no add-ons of any kind.
I have quit out of other programs and run DW with plenty of RAM available.  When it freezes I look in Activity Monitor and can see that RAM is still very available and CPU usage is high, but not excessive.  The DW program is unavailable.  I've tried waiting out the freeze but it doesn't end.
So far, I have had no problems with DW doing other things.  Not even when I open 20+ files at once and available RAM is a tiny sliver.  In that case, I get freezes that last a few seconds, and the program is slow, but everything still works.
I searched extensively for other reports of this bug and found nothing about the find feature but that CS5.5 seems to be unstable and crashes a lot.  Some reports have linked crashes to using FTP so I tried running find without first using FTP and it makes no difference.
I need to update a website with hundreds of pages and it's really untenable to search for broken links and outdated text by hand.
Running CS5.5.  I just got this a couple weeks ago but I previously ran CS3 and could use find in the entire site (the same site actually) just fine.
I have an iMac 2.16GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 2.5GB RAM.  Running OS 10.5.8.
I've got to have this feature working.  Please help.
    Thanks,
    Cyndi

Hmmm...doing some tests limiting the search to certain subfolders or to selected files.  It seems the find function is working fine until it gets to a particular file.  There are several such files.  It starts to open that file then I get the rainbow wheel of death without end.  When I force quit and relaunch, Dreamweaver remembers this file as the last one opened.  I can open any of these files no problem (either from the splashpage or directly from the site directory) and I can search within them without incident.
What is the search string you are using?  Have you tried making fragments of those files to see if you can identify the block of code that causes the freeze?
Besides, I can't imagine it would be a good idea to switch back and forth between different versions of the same program.  There is not just one term I need to search for.  This is an ongoing project.
It woudn't make any difference at all to use CS3 for this.
Okay, so here's the question, what is causing find to hang like this?  It's not something stopping the file from opening or being searched.  I will gladly remove any bad code or whatever it might be, but some of these files are huge (like 100 pages if printed).  I'm fixing code DW is marking as bad but that doesn't seem to be enough.
Yes, that is the question!  I have no idea, but sounds like you are on the right path to finding out....
In the DW Reports panel, there is a tab called "LINK CHECKER".
Under "Site: Reports..." there is no link checker anywhere.  I found nothing else called reports.
What is the search string you are using?
A variety of things: lanmind, lmi.net, lye, chemical.
Have you tried making fragments of those files to see if you can identify the block of code that causes the freeze?
I just tried it.  I took one of the smaller affected files (I tested as many as I could (it only will cause a freeze if the search term appears in the file) and found 8 "bad" files) and broke it into two halves, using the same header and footer for each.  The original filename is y.htm.  I broke it into y-test-1 and y-test-2.  1 was fine, 2 was bad.  I then broke 2 into two files, y-test-3 and y-test-4.  And they're both okay!!  WTH.
I noticed that the source code had some bolded text.  It shouldn't be bold there, just in the display, and it was pretty random.  But there were 3 parts to the file (annotated links) with some bolded source text.  These appeared in y-test-4.  I used save-as to create the test files, not cut and paste.  Yet y-test-4 does not freeze up.
When I deleted the 3 annotated links from y-test-2, it stopped freezing when being pulled up during a search (I highlight one or more files, making sure they are not already open, and choose "Find in: Selected files in site").  I deleted them one at a time and it wasn't until I deleted the last one that it made a difference.  Then I put back the first two and left the third one out.  And the file is okay.
But I still can't figure out why.  There is random bolded source code in most of the files (all?), including those that don't give me any trouble.  There are some weird symbols in this link, but they exist in other files that are fine.  Hmmm...maybe not so fine.  I'm now deliberately trying files using keywords that I know are in there.  As opposed to looking for the outdated domain names like before.
It would really help if someone could give me a list of "bad" symbols or something.  And what does the bolded text mean?  And yes this is a BUG on Dreamweaver's part.  The files open just fine and they display fine in Firefox.  I can use the "find all" function when doing a sitewide search, even the "bad" files will be listed correctly, and then open the files manually.  If the "bad" file is open, I can search within it no problem.  The only thing I can't do is a sitewide (or selected files) search on files that are not open.  The "bad" ones will cause Dreamweaver to freeze as they automatically open.
So yes, I've found a workaround, but that doesn't mean there isn't a bug and that I don't want it fixed.  And the website I'm updating is really old with a lot of the work done in 1999.  It's for a nonprofit, it's very very important to keep the pages mostly as is, and I'm taking over from someone who recently passed away.  I am revamping things considerably, but, aside from fixing outdated links, I need to work with what's there and keep a "legacy" version.  I'm porting the info to a blog format but it will take months.  (And yes, this particular link is not important but it's the example I have to work with.)
The bad section of code is:
    <LI><B><I>UTNE Reader's Y2K Guide</I></B><BR>
    <UL> <A HREF="http://www.utne.com/bY2k.tmpl$search?db=dArticle.db&eqheadlinedata=Y2K%20Citizen%27s%20Act ion%20Guide">http://www.utne.com/bY2k.tmpl$search?db=dArticle.db&eqheadlinedata=Y2K%20Citizen%27s%20Act ion%20Guide</A></UL>
I'm hoping that doesn't break anything and that it comes out okay.  You can see the page on the website here: http://ehnca.org/www/ehnlinx/y.htm
There are dollar signs elsewhere that seem to be okay but I'm not sure.  That seems to be the only weirdness I can find.
Any comments?  Are dollar signs (in links, not in text) bad?  I tried another file and found only one dollar sign in it in a link.  I removed it, saved and closed the file, and did a search on it.  And it froze.  So if dollar signs are bad, then they aren't the only things.
    Help!
    Thanks.

  • Crash, Freeze, Audiowerk 2 and LP7

    Hi,
Is there anybody still using and ol' audiowerk2 ?
I've changed my processor and putted a Gigadesigns in a G4 466 Mhz.
And, after 1h30 -1h40, the BIG crash. Everything freezes : if I do nothing, just got a frozen mac. If I'm playing or listening, the crash appears with a sample of the music — like a used CD— , with a very short and quick repeat.
I'm using LP7 with a PB without any problems.
And I can't find why : the Gigadesign ? The audiowerk card ? With Logic 6 , there was no problems.
    Any ideas ?

Do you have a AirPort Extreme card installed? I have a 1GHz PowerBook G4 that has the same symptoms as documented here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1629216&stqc=true
Can you look in Console.app and see if there's something in system.log or console.log that points to what's causing these freezes?

  • LaCie 500GB External Firewire 800 causes crash every time its plugged in???

My LaCie 500GB Firewire External hard drive causes the computer to freeze every time I plug it in.
I just switched back to Mac from Win XP, where the LaCie was used for almost a year without a single problem. Supposedly, since it is formatted for XP use, it can simply be plugged in to my G5 (dual 2.3, 4BG RAM) and work just fine.
I've upgraded to 10.4.4 and still have issues. I've read this is a 'kernal panic' issue, etc.
What is the solution? I can't even plug it in and reformat it - as soon as it's plugged in the Mac collapses; the screen goes 'grey tinted' and an error message appears telling me to hold down the restart button and restart the computer. If I leave the drive plugged in, as soon as I've signed in on the restart, it crashes/freezes/collapses again, same error (i.e. it's circular).
There seems to be no solution. Any help MUCH appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Sarge

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
First find out if this is a Firewire 800 or 400 problem. Try connecting a Firewire 400 cable to the drive if it supports it. If it only has Firewire 800 ports, you may want to get a Firewire 400 drive to experiment to see if that's all the problem is.
After a forced reboot, it is also always wise to repair the directory if you are backed up:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
If it detects issues on your source drive that it can't repair, and you are backed up, then I would use Alsoft Disk Warrior.
If it detects no issues, then the problem probably resides in either the cable or the drive you are connecting to. Try a little process of elimination.

  • Crash/Freeze all programs

Every 2 hours or so all my programs/finder freeze and then crash. Force quit dosen't work and the only way to sort it out it to turn my mac off and on again. Then 2 hours later the whole thing happens again....
I have recently upgraded to 10.5.4 via the combo installer form Apple's website. I have run the disk permissions and no problems where found.
Can anyone help? or has anyone has this problem?
    Cheers in advance!

    Hi,
I've just solved some of the mysteries I've experienced with my Eclipse SLI which does use X58 Chipset and which appear to be also problems other boards with X58 chipset show. Here's my findings:
    1) If XMP profile is enabled, the QPI speed is locked at 4800. Higher values may be selected but do not become effective. After reboot, the BIOS shows 4800 as QPI setting. Disable XMP profile as workaround. Manual setting of non SPD speed settings like 1600 still works!
    2) When resuming from S3 sleep the BIOS ignores the RAM timings and uses different RAM timings, including massive undertiming of RAM. This may prevent systems from waking up, cause instability or (in case of slower timings) slow down the machine. Workarounds: Either select a RAM frequency where the changed settings after S3 won't do any harm or configure the system not to sleep but hibernate instead. From hibernate, the system resumes with proper RAM timings!
    3) When setting RAM frequencies that require more than 1.5v it may crash the computer to launch GreenPower II as GreenPower II does reduce RAM voltage to 1.5 even if it's in 1600 mode where the RAM info reads 1.65 volt (mine runs stable at 1.55 and almost stable at 1.5 but most RAM will fail instantly when values below 1.65 are selected at 1600 speed). GPII simply ignores manually set RAM voltage and undervolts. Hurry to advance mode after launching GPII and select (or re-select) proper voltage. GPII may show proper voltage for a short period of time and then reduce it to 1.5 (especially after S3/hibernate / change to default and back to optimize). Re-selecting the proper voltage (even if it's shown correctly for a short period of time) prevents GPII from reducing voltage and thus crashing the system.
Tech support is notified, but it seems that it requires many more reports of other users for something to happen, thus, if you have an X58 chipset board and experience some of those problems above, REPORT IT TO TECH SUPPORT!

So mainly you need the GPII for the fan speed regulation, right? But without it, the system works fine or will still have problems?
    Well, problems remaining without GPII:
    1) XMP profile disables QPI settings above 4800 (harmless once I found it out, as I can set speeds without enabling XMP profile). This seems to be a BIOS problem.
    2) When resuming from S3 the RAM timings are incorrect (I'm using hibernate now, but would love to be able to use sleep from time to time without faulty RAM timings as a result). This seems to be a X58 problem.
Thus yes, GPII mainly is for fan speed regulation and other problems can be worked around. I basically wrote those observations here in case other people might run into those problems, as I've seen reports from other users with X58 boards here who cannot even wake from S3 and my guess is that their RAM is underclocked after resume from S3. Others might also have crashes when running @1.65v and enabling GPII, so I also did write that. My RAM typically will allow to fix voltage even when GPII goes down to 1.5 - those Corsair sticks really are impressive.
To make it complete: since the last BIOS update I've had some instability with Crysis and overheat-freezes by GPU heat when running Kombustor. I never tried Kombustor before, only tried it after those new crysis problems. It looks like the new instability can be resolved easily (some BIOS value adjustment for the Crysis thing) and the GPU heat problem with Kombustor is already written in VGA section, but it appears it's only happening with Kombustor and caused by VGA fan speed not going high enough combined with the GPU causing system freeze at 96-97C although GTX295 should work until 105C...but if normal operation won't ever cause such heat, it shouldn't be a problem.

Ive repaired 1000s of laptops over the years (translate: diagnose and replace parts).
Its not that old, Ive owned 100s of laptops (most were free) ....some I still have are nearly 13 years old and still perfect, ....some extremely expensive ones died in under a year.
other than becoming obsolete at some point, there isnt really any "will spoil on" data like Milk for solid state computer parts, ....alas.
You can have a $5000 laptop die in 4 months, and a junker one keep kicking after 10 years.... Ive seen that firsthand countless times.
Common logic dictates that "very expensive = long life" in computers,..... but all the repair people will tell you just the opposite.
I know you have a gripe, I get that all too well honestly .

  • Photoshop CS4 and graphic cards. Can cause crashing?

Since upgrading to CS4 I seem to have increased crashing.
    Here are my system specs.
    Mac 2 x 2.66 GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon
    9 GB of Ram
250 GB internal dedicated scratch disc
NVDIA GeForce 7300 GT with 256 VRAM
After having endless techs look at my machine and upgrading everything. I am beginning to suspect the graphics card.
With OpenGL can a underperforming video card cause crashing in photoshop especially with massive file sizes ( multilayered CMYK poster sized files the can exceed 7 GB)?

Did you install the 11.0.1 update?
Is your OS up to date with patches?
Have you tried disabling OpenGL in preferences to avoid using the GPU/Graphics card?

Yes, all I can tell you is that Finder does not have that function in ML. Your system is "working as expected".
