right ! sorry, i misread
They are also used to clean bookmarks, browsing history, caches, cookies, and download history files so your personal information gets wiped regularly from your computer.
still, these apps are known to cause more problems than doing good. for the tasks mentioned above, take a look at Cocktail

See if your Mac will boot from the install DVD.

  • Help - Internet Cleanup 5.0

In need of help fast. Installed the above software 30 days ago to test out on my iMac. I'm having to use my laptop to access internet this morning as iMac is rendered useless.
EVERY time I click on my mouse the words 'Spy alert, internet cleanup has expired' comes up and I have no way of removing it. I threw away the main folder for the application ages ago but elements seem to have embedded themselves into my iMac. Does anyone have any idea how I can remove this horrible software please.

  • Help -can't start up after uupgrade and 'internet cleanup' install

I've got a problem... trying to remember how my installs went, but recently installed 10.5.4 and shortly thereafter a smith micro product called internet cleanup. in addition, during the restart, the air conditioner for our upstairs (computer / exercise room died and at 85F or so, returned to find the fans running full blast and the international "NO" sign in place of the gray apple at startup.
I am unable to start up at this point and don't know why. I have run disk utility and repaired 1 permission, no joy, and ran disk warrior last night and still can't start up. OS cd and DW see my drive ok and perform tests and repairs ok, but still can't start up.
if anyone has a recommendation, I'm all ears. I'm ready to start unplugging any peripherals, open the case, and unplug memory, not knowing what else to do.

I would be surprised Smith is 10.5.x compatible, why not look at Onyx or Leopard Cache Cleaner, or just manually clean out ~/Library/Caches/
Resetting the SMC (button for pre-2008, leaving unplugged for 2008 model).

Obviously first, if DW repairs your drive and you are running 10.5.4, you have another disk drive and can boot, no?
    Backups and cloned system?
Else, start installing and setting up a new OS boot drive. Later you can try to merge or migrate and salvage files and applications.

  • Is Firefox compatible with SPYBOT Search & Destroy and Aladdin System's Internet CleanUp/Browser Guard applications?

I believe SmithMicro acquired Aladdin Systems, but Internet CleanUp is an older program that I like. If anyone has any experience with the compatibility of these applications with Firefox, it would be appreciated. Thanx.

Quite honestly, from the number of support issues we have seen posted here about problems caused by external security applications "cleaning" Firefox files or "cleanup" programs messing with Firefox files, I wouldn't recommend using a program like that.

  • Internet Cleanup and NetBlockade

I installed Internet Cleanup to try it out. But after uninstalling it (dragging it the the trash), I started to see the NetBlockade logo on all flash enabled sites e.g. Youtube. I uninstalling it internet using appzapper with no luck. I still see the NetBlockade logo. I am curious as to what will happen after the trial period expires, will i have to purchase it. or loose all flash enabled access. Any suggestions.
P.S. Do macs get adware/spyware, are there any better uinstallers then appzapper.
    Thanks,
    Dmitry

    Dmitry,
Follow the instructions here to remove it - just don't reinstall. Remember to remove the other two files mentioned further down the thread on that page.
Spyware is pretty much a self-inflicted injury: The OS as such does not matter, since spyware depends on user behavior. (Please don't misunderstand this: The spyware would still have to be coded to run on a Mac, but OSX itself is not an impediment.)
I'm not aware of much of anything in the way of spyware for OS X - for now.
That said, you can take steps to protect yourself:
    Configure your firewall correctly.
If you still have "Open "safe" files after download." checked in your Safari, you could still conceivably get hit with a drive-by: Uncheck it.
Don't use P2P (Limewire and the like) or visit "dodgy" (unknown, copyright infringing, skanky, etc.) Web sites.
Don't install any program or give any installer your admin password unless you are certain that you know and trust the source.
Create a separate administrator account for installing software and updates and make your user account an ordinary, nonadminstrative user.

  • Internet Clean-up for Snow Leopard

Smith Miccrosystems ("SM") makes a handy software application for internet clean-up/security for Macs called, not surprisingly, "Internet Cleanup". Problem is, SM hasn't produced a version that is compatible with Snow Leopard. Does anyone know of a similar application that is compatible with Snow Leopard?

For the money, it's hard to beat SM's "Internet Cleanup." I currently use Maintain's "Cocktail" v. 4.5.1 (http://www.maintain.se/) and Intego's "Internet Security Barrier" (includes Virus Barrier V) http://www.intego.com/home.asp
Both are SL 10.6.1 compatible and work like a charm. Between the two of them, I think they will do everything (and more) that you are looking for. I'm very pleased but it was costly.
Hope this info is of helpful nature.

  • Mac freezing still in Safari, Acquistion and mail?!

I have for some time been having 'what i thought' was issues with Safari freezing and being unable to even force quit. I thought i had it solved thanks to replies on here - but it's still happening sometimes. So I began to contemplate that perhaps Safari wasn't the issue - because it's happening with other programs.
First of all I am now using Firefox - as it seems much more stable whatever I do or visit on the web - under my current circumstances. (it has yet to crash on me?) Safari seems fine everywhere I go - unless I turn on the password access auto fill-in (using Keychain) and then some sites seem to cause the safari freeze (as above)? So my issue be Keychain I thought?
However, It has also happened only once or twice when I used apple mail to access my google email account (again I think these setting stored via keychain?) - if it automatically logs in when you open mail. This doesn't concern me too much though as I am still in the habit of getting my email via the website direct! However it may aide in the problem solving....
The final piece of the issue, is that I keep trying to open and use acquisition - and again it rarely gets beyond the point of logging into the networks (sometimes it will log into the networks but won't get beyond the start of searching for something) - before the freezing happens and again I need to hard reset? Now I am pretty sure that this program doesn't use Keychain, so...?
I realise there are many variables - but the issues all revolve around internet access and possibly keychain access - but is not soley confined to Safari?
Finally, I have my done all the normal repairs/checks etc - the OS, Safari, firefox and acquisition are all upto date versions. I do also have Allume 'Internet cleanup' - which blocks traffic/pop-ups etc but although this is fairly upto date 3.0.2 (not latest version 4) - I have also tried accessing acquisition with this program disabled - but still freezes. So in conclusion I have removed this as a possible issue? (plus firefox works through it fine all the time?!)
So, now I am head scratching and looking for suggestions as what might be causing this issue?
Thanks for reading my lengthy problem!

    Hi,
I would probably completely uninstall Internet Cleanup (which is done via the Installer application) just to make sure none of the files it installs are somehow affecting the Mac. Sometimes disabled applications can still cause havoc.
Both Mail and Safari do indeed use the keychain for storing user/password information. Have you tried repairing the keychain from within Keychain Access? This can be done from the Keychain menu -> Keychain First Aid.
One quick test you can do to help narrow down things is to try these applications in another user account. This will help us to know whether your problem is local to your account or system wide. If you don't have another account you can use System Preferences -> Accounts -> [+] to create a test one (and [-] to remove it if needed)

  • IDVD Stops Responding when Exporting from iMovie

I'm using iDVD and iMovie (from iLife 06 and fully up to date) on a MacPro (also up to date on all software, MacOSX, Quicktime etc).
This proceedure has worked before several times but now results in a non-responding iDVD every time I try it, including an archive and re-install and a complete new install of OSX and all software on a new partition.
    What I'm doing.....
[1] Recording a TV programme on EyeTV (410) and exporting it to iMovie - sucessful every time
[2] Edit the iMove project and add chapter markers and save project - no problem.
[3] Export to iDVD - iDVD shows exporting in progress and whilst this is still showing iDVD launches
[4] iDVD starts playing the music from a std theme for a few seconds and then stops. Then resumes the music after resizing the window and then after a couple of more seconds freezes. From the Dock I can see that iMove and iDVD are "not responding"
[5] Eventually iMovie completes it's "export" and then starts responding normally. iDVD continues to show as non responding although I can move the window around the screen. I have to force quit iDVD to get it to close down.
    I have tried:
    Re-exporting the project from EyeTV
Deleting the preferences files for iMove and iDVD
Deleting the iLife suite and re-installing
Doing an OSX archive and re-install
Installing a fresh OSX (10.4.8) on a different drive and installing fresh software
Running Disk Utility - clean bill of health on both drives
    Repaired permissions
The Console reports the following errors when exporting from iMove to iDVD:

Result - problem persists. I'm at a loss as what to do next. Any suggestions greatfully received.

Yes, tried that when I deleted the preferences. Disk Utility did not report any permissions needed repairing.
What really mystifies me is that this export to iDVD did work once and I expected it to resume once I'd created a fresh OSX install along with all the iLife apps on a new partition, but it remained the same!
Perhaps there is some sort of other software conflict going on? I have Adobe CS2, MS Office, Toast and FMP installed all are latest editions. On the utilities front I have installed Stuffit Deluxe, Internet Cleanup, Contour USB controller for video editing and a LogicTech wireless trackball. Again all the drivers are the latest releases.
Does anyone know if there are any preferences associated with the other not responding applications listed in my other post that I could try the delete-reboot trick on?

  • An corrupted EFTFile1.sparseimage has appeared on my iMac but cannot deleted

Hello guys! I need real hands-on practical help here, please.
I have already asked for help in here but didn't manage to get clear step by step help. Only got confusing redirection to other posts and very technical advice which really confuses me.
First of all, I have an iMac8,1 with Snow Leopard 10.6.7. Memory 2GB 800 MHz DDR2 SDRAM, and before the problem occured I had about 260-270 of free GB out of more than 300 GB.
I have discovered that my recycling bin contained a folder Recovered Files with a file EFTFile1.sparseimage. I only noticed it when I tried to Secure Empty the  Trash after running the tool Secure Delete Free Space from Internet Cleanup by SmithMicro (I don't know if this might be the cause of the problem).
When I got to deleting stuff from the Trush I noticed it was taking too long, so I decided to transfer the various files out of the trush and delete them individually. When I reached the EFTFile1.sparseimage I discovered this was about 261 GB in size - when I tried opening it, it said the following:
The following disk images couldn't be opened. Reason: corrupt image
After reading some online forums, I understand now that by deleting this sparseimage file I should be able to recover the free space. Some people suggested to use Terminal. Their instructions have been very confusing and also when I attempted once in Terminal, before submitting anything, a warning said I might loose important files. So, I stayed well away!!!
I want to stress, this EFTFile1.sparseimage isn't something I created (some forums have mentioned the possibility that some people may have done that for other purposes). The file appeared on my mac by itself. I guess, after using the SmithMicro free space delete?!
If anyone has the patience and knows of a real solution for this problem, I would greatly appreciate your help.
    Cheers guys!

This is just a guess, but that file may be part of the mechanism that Internet Cleanup uses to erase the free space.  It might allocate a very large file, write erase patterns to that file, then (if allowed to complete), delete that file.  Since you didn't let it complete, that file remained.
To delete that file in a Terminal session, launch Terminal, then type this command, including a trailing space, without pressing the <return> key:
    sudo rm -i
Then open the trash and drag that sparseimage file into the Terminal window.  You should now see the full path of that file following the space after the "-i" switch.  Now switch to the Terminal window and press <return>.  First you'll be prompted for your administrative password.  Type it and press <return>.  Next you'll be asked if you want to delete the sparseimage file.  Verify that it's the right file, then press <return>.  That should do it.
To terminal the Terminal session gracefully, type "exit" (without the quotes), press <return>, then quit Terminal.

  • Surprise solution to error uploading a book

Just by chance I stumbled across the (my) solution to this mysterious problem concerning the upload of a book, which always stopped at 64 kb with an error message eventually:
First, I used Cocktail to repair permissions and do the routine system maintenance.
But, more importantly, I suddenly remembered this application by Allume Systems, "Internet Cleanup". This software contains a feature called "Net Blocking" and "Spy Alert", meant to help keeping out malicious net attacks. I turned these features off, and suddenly everything went smoothly.
Maybe this will only help those who have this software as well, but also I think after this I would encourage everybody with similar problems to investigate all possible net-blocking and firewall software.
Hope this is at least a bit useful...

Yes, you are absolutely right. I noticed there is a list of apps in the preferences that are allowed to send, for example iTunes is among them. You can configure this list, of course and add/remove what you like. But I didn't bother and will keep it deactivated. For that purpose I have been quite happy with "Little Snitch" (shareware) that does the job very efficiently and easy-to-use.

  • My isight imac got an insomnia

It won't go to sleep by itself. Only the display is off with a constant light on, not the blinking one. I have to tell it to sleep by using the menu command.
I've heard that if you have a usb peripherial plugged into the imac, it might not do auto sleep. I have a usb card reader but when I unplug it off, the imac still didn't go to sleep.
Do anyone know how to cure this insomnia problem??

Navin, USB peripherals are probably the most common cause (hubs and USB modems especially, but others can cause this too).
If this isn't the case, then you need to consider possible background software issues. Allume's "Internet Cleanup" has been reported as causing this with some OS versions. Other things that may be involved could be virus checkers, "button scanners" associated with scanners and printers etc, or anything else that runs in the background.
You might find it worth checking out what s actually running through "Activity Monitor" (in your utilities folder). Have a look too at the items listed under "Login Items" for your account (in System Preferences / Accounts), and try turning off anything which isn't absolutely necessary for you. Software installations often put things here without letting know at the time.
On rare occasions firewire or ethernet devices could also be involved. Try disconnecting everything except the mouse and keyboard and see if this resolves the issue.
    Cheers
    Rod

  • What is the best Computer Security Software for Mac OSX 10.4.7?

Spyware, Spam, Viruses, Worms, etc., etc. I know Mac is supposed to be less vulnerable than windows. However, even Mac isn't perfect. I'm considering buying a suite of software by Allume Systems: Internet Cleanup 4.0. Has anyone anything positive or negative to say about this software, or other recommendations for spyware, spam blocking, virus protections, etc.?
    ibook   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

OS X isn't supposed to be less vulnerable than Windows, it is definitely less vulnerable than Windows by a long shot but you are right, there is no OS that can be classified as perfect in this regard.
I have no experience with the Allume suite but Norton Antivirus is compatible with Tiger.
Take a look at ClamXav which is free or donation ware. This is what Apple include/uses with Mac OS X Server.
