Netbook import CD using network Optical Drive

Just purchased a new Netbook running XP with no CD/DVD drive, had no problem transferring iTunes to Netbook from old Laptop as we have a Home Server that stores our backups. My problem is adding new CDs to the Netbook. The first time I needed to add some CDs I got the bright idea to add the servers DVD drive as a shared network drive to the Netbook, boy did that work slick, the first time. Put a CD into the server, iTunes saw it just like it was in an internal optical drive, asked if I wished to import it and did so with one click of the mouse. Now that method no longer works, the Netbook still sees the servers DVD drive in My Computer as a network drive, I can open the drive and see the tracks the CD but iTunes will no longer recognize the drive or CD as an audio CD so the import no longer works. I also tried to navigate iTunes to the drive and import it as a folder but that does not work either. Since I have tried to map the CD/DVD drives of other computers on our network to the Netbook with no success, same as the original I can see the track files on any of the drives but iTunes does not recognize them as CDs. As far as I know we have not loaded any iTunes updates since the first successful upload when I originally set up the servers DVD drive. I see others with Netbook questions, has anyone found a way to get iTunes to see a network drive as an optical drive? I know it worked once for several CD imports I am just perplexed as to why it only worked for one session.

With another Mac there's no problem, the installation is on Disc #1.
According to Apple, one can use either another Apple computer or a PC to install via Remote Disc.
What I'm looking for is where is the DVD to CD software that has to be installed on a PC so one can use the PC optical drive to read/transfer information to the MBA via wireless.

MacBook Air does not have an optical drive.  There is a program I wish to install on my Air which is an astronomy application called Megastar V.  Installation requires the use of a CD.  Is there a way to use the optical drive on my PC (toshiba laptop using Windows 7) to install this program onto my Air?

Thank you for explaining to me how to do this.  I will try it tomorrow and let all of you know how it goes.

  • Using the optical drive of a MacBook Pro from new iMac for iTunes

Can I connect my macbook pro to my new iMac (no optical drive) with ethernet cable and use the optical drive of the macbook pro to upload CDs to iTunes on the new iMac?

On my 17" MacBook Pro I use the eSata port for Black X Duet Hard Drive Docking station where I put 2 1TB Hitachi internal drives. They are swappable and are about $80.00US. I use the USB port for my system backup and a G-force 500 MB bus powered portable drive on the FW800 port just for the heck of it. It works out really well for me.

  • Can I still use the Optical Drive if I install a SSD in my MacBook Pro?

    Hello,
I'm looking to replace the standard hard drive in my MacBook Pro with a 240GB SSD, my question is, does this effect the usage of the DVD/CD Drive? As i've seen in some videos people taking that out and putting the exsisting hard drive there.
I don't want to do that I will turn that in to an extra external hard drive.
Any information would be very welcome.
    Thank you,
    James

Yes you can still use your optical drive just as you do now if you don't remove it.

  • Import from remote/networked CD drive

The CD drive on my wife's iBook (G4, 10.3) is broken (yes she should get it fixed but she can't bear to part with the thing). If she wants to import a CD into iTunes, what I do is import it into my iMac (Intel, 10.4), drag the songs out as MP3s, copy them over the network to the iBook, import them into iTunes and type in the track info by hand.
    Is there a better way?
The iBook can access the iMac's CD drive across the network in Finder, but it just sees a generic drive with a bunch of files, not a CD image that iTunes can open. Perhaps I should create a local CD image in the iBook and manually copy the remote one into it, but it's still a manual process and I don't think iTunes will recognise it even then (must admit I haven't tried this though).
Maybe she should just get an external CD drive. Will that work with iTunes?
btw I did a search for keywords such as itunes, import, remote, networked, cd etc but I couldn't find much (nearest was http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=3094551 which involves a Windows file server so not quite the same, and didn't get any replies anyway).

    Hi-
Stop torturing yourself- get the drive.
If an external optical drive is recognized by the system, then it will work with iTunes.
Also, if you have an iPod, using the iPod Music Liberator, iPod Disk, or FreeMyMusic software (to name 3 of many), you can load music from one, and off load the music to the other:

An external drive, network or Cloud drive are seen the best options. DVD drives are not seen as viable options. Read this microsoft document about setting up a drive for file history.

  • How come iMovie cannot use network hard drives?

i have a Time Capsule (1 TB) with a USB hub. i have a 250GB WD HD attached as well as a Seagate 500GB HD. however, the only way i can import movies from my canon vix M30 is if i actually attach an external HD to the MacBook Pro itself. iMovie sees the network hard drives, but puts a yellow triangle over them. why? anyone?

    Welcome to Apple discussions!
A network drive is too slow. If you want to use an external drive, go with FireWire (or ESATA if you have a Mac Pro).

  • Upgrading Xserve G5 using USB Optical Drive/ Target Disk Mode

    Hello Everyone!
I am trying to update my Xserve G5 that is currently running 10.3 (Panther) to 10.5 (Leopard). I have tried multiple methods and cannot seem to get it to work.
    I have tried to:
Use a USB Optical Drive - I tried using a USB optical drive because the Xserve G5 has a CD drive not a superdrive. It recognizes the Leopard Installation DVD as it pops up on the desktop. I open the installation and click the restart button, but it restarts again and goes to my desktop as if I just turned on the Mac. I have tried doing this in Safe Mode (Holding down Shift on Start Up) and trying to select it from volumes (Holding down Option on Start Up). These two do not work.   I believe it is because I am using a USB optical drive and that it wont recognize the drive unless you are logged on in the OS. Could this be it?
Use FireWire Target Disk Mode - I also tried to use target disk mode by hooking up my Xserve to my MacBook Pro 2009. Everything work fine. I put the Xserve into target disk mode by holding down T on start up and it goes into target disk mode. It pops up on my MacBook Pro desktop as a FireWire external device (I can access all of my files on the Xserve hard drive). My only problem is that I do not know how to run the installation disk of Leopard off of my MacBook Pro so it installs it on my Xserve.
Any Suggestions or Ideas would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank You
    - Ryan

So what should I do since reformatting the HDD through disk utlity on the Xserve is not an option
    Why not???
Boot th xSeve using alt key from Install Disc in MBP, then...
      2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
       3. Click the Erase tab.
       4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
       5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
       6. Highlight the drive, select Partition Tab, then Format type... MacOS Extended Journalled, APM Partition.
Quit DU which puts you back to the Installer... Install.

  • Burn in itunes using external optical drive imac 2009

My Matsushita optical drive (2009 iMac) no longer works.  Is there an external optical drive that I can purchase for burning music CD's?.  I already have Maverick, but I believe the operating system is not the problem.  The external optical drive has to be compatible with hardware that already has an internal (non-functioning) drive.

    I have a PIONEER DVD-RW  DVR-XD09.
It's worked on systems with or without optical drives for me since 2009.
    It was $69 at Bestbuy.
It has a USB/Power combo cable that uses TWO USB ports, but I got a 5v AC adapter for $4.99 and now it only needs one USB port to function. I've burned with it under 10.8.4, 10.8.5 and 10.9.0.
They've upgraded it since I got mine (Link here) so it can burn Blu-Ray now

  • MBP Late 2010, How can I install Win7 Boot Camp using External Optical Driv

    Hello:
I have a new MBP purchased in February. It's not the 2011 model. I replaced the Optical drive with an SSD drive and put the optical drive in an external enclosure. The Optical drive works great, reads, writes, etc. My Windows 7, Pro 64bit DVD works also, tested on a PC.
I use the Boot Camp assistant to create a partition. It them reboots and never starts up from the optical drive. I get an Apple logo alternating with a stop sign.
I have got back to OS X by starting with the Option key and choosing my OS X volume.
I tried booting to the DVD by using the option key, that did not work. I then choose the EFI option which allowed me to hit any key and appeared to boot from the external optical drive. Windows setup screen came up and I hit enter to start the file loading process. It eventually stopped when the progress bar was all the way across the screen. Then nothing.
    Questions {Please give definitive answers, not guesses, thanks :)}
    1) Is it possible to setup a boot camp Windows installation without an internal optical drive? Yes/No.
    2) If yes, how?
    3) I see the rEFIt utility has helped some but I read mixed reports. Will this help me boot and run Windows setup from an external optical drive? I don't want to install it if it's not known to be a certain fix.
    4) Is my only options to reinstall the optical drive?
I chatted to OWC the vendor that sells the bracket. They had no idea how to install a Windows BC partition without an internal drive.
I am seriously discouraged by what seems to be Apple wanting to control everything. I had a Mac Pro and Air book in my future but now, it's on hold.
    Thanks in advance,
    Kevin

I tried what you are doing with a 2007 MBP, and could not get any Windows CD s to boot from an external optical drive, firewire or USB.
I think this is fundamental to Windows which won't boot from an external USB drive either even on a Windows machine (although I believe there may be complex ways of achieving this). I don't think this is Apple trying to control the world.
I ended up taking the MCE Optibay out and putting the original optical drive back in.
Just possible that something has changed between a 2007 MBP and 2010 MBP, but I doubt it.
If you want the second internal HD, you have two options:-
    1. Put the Apple optical back in, install Windows, then take out the optical and refit the SSD. The external optical will still be able to install windows apps and data etc, just not boot any windows install CDs or utilities (like Paragon rescue disks). You will not be able to do a Windows repair install without refitting the optical.
    2. Parallels, which has come a long way in the last two years. I am 99% certain that Parallels will install from an external optical.

  • Using the optical drive on a PC

Does anyone did or know how to install the DVD to CD software on a PC?
I tried using the 2 DVD that come with the MBA and the PC doesn't find "anything that it can use".
I asked a Genius at an Apple store, and he said that the software required comes bundled with the external USB SuperDrive, something that doesn't make any sense, because if I buy the external SuperDrive I won't need the optical drive of the PC anymore!!!!
Any idea where to look for it?
    Thanks

  • Ripping DVDs using external optical drive with MacBook

Quick and possibly ridiculously silly question here. I have a collection of about 475 Region-2 DVDs (i.e., playable in the UK, not in the US) I purchased many years ago that are just taking up space. What I would like to do is rip them and store the files on an external drive.
The problem is that the optical drive on my MacBook is broken (no, I’m not happy about it -- see the dozens of pages of complaints in these Forum on the issue) and I don’t want to spend $1000 right now buying a new one.
This means I need to purchase an external optical drive. Unfortunately, I’m pretty confused about whether these things (by LaCie or Samsung, for instance) can actually rip anything, let alone Region 2 DVDs. I know they can write DVDs, but ripping—that I’m not sure about. Logically, they should be able to but I'm wondering whether their ripping capability has been disabled.
So, does anyone happen to know whether an external Superdrive can rip Region-2 DVDs? And if so, can you recommend any good ones for the Mac?
*Incidentally, I should add that these files are for my personal use, won’t be shared/uploaded, and will serve only as backups to my purchased DVDs. Basically, all I really want to do is clear out my cramped apartment and stick all the DVD boxes in a storage unit once and for all.*
    Thanks for your help

You must have one of those old-fashioned DVD players that looks for region codes.
Most better DVD players are now region free and will play NTSC or PAL DVDs.
