Netbook-remix - archstyle

Hi everyone!
Just bought me an eeepc (904HD with an 160GB harddisk) a few weeks ago and tried ubuntu with netbook-remix yesterday. Sooo... as I didn't want to leave arch or clutter my hd with too many distributions, I shorthandedly ported the netbook-interface stuff and it's in AUR now.
There's no meta package or anything, so here's the packages I uploaded that you need to try it: go-home-applet, window-picker-applet, maximus, human-theme, human-netbook-theme, netbook-launcher.
Once installed..
Add maximus and netbook-launcher to gnomes startup in gnome-session-properties;
delete the bottom panel;
setup top panel like: GoHomeApplet|WindowPickerApplet|NotificationArea|MixerApplet|Clock;
restart session and there you go.
hope you like it.
see ya
btw: Tthe dependencies in the PKGBUILD's may or may not be complete, but assuming you have installed gnome with pacman -S gnome (and gnome-extra if thats not enough) you should have everything needed. Gonna work on that when I have time again.

Can you provide a little more detail on your process.
I tried this last night and the UNR interface loads but is not responsive and the top panel disappears.  Currently I am updating the pckgbuilds to point to the newer versions to see if that might help.
Thanks

  • GUI inspired by Ubuntu Netbook remix

Recently I saw GUI of Ubuntu netbook remix. it so cool that I wanted to have something similar for my labview application. I have successfully developed it.
I am just sharing if somebody wants it, also I would like to know more ideas about improving it.

Depending on your audience, perhaps the best improvement you could make is on-the-fly translation capability. This is a rudimentary example, but a more sophisticated language management system can be easily achieved with an action engine or class. Keep in mind, LabVIEW uses UTF-16 (UTF16) Unicode, whereas the de facto web standard is UTF-8 (UTF8). (I have hijacked the last tab, 'Reports', and the three options, the 'O', the Canvas, and the Brick Wall change from English to Chinese to Greek respectively)
Choose descriptive names for Tab Controls and Radio Buttons, rather than "Tab 1, Tab 2, Tab 3..."
Don't wire the timeout case in a UI structure unless you need a polling mechanism! Attached diagram responds much snappier (previous response time was random between 0-500msec, now it's always nearly instantatneous). For anyone listening, and this is important: If your Timeout Case is empty in your event structures, it's OK to delete it!! This way you're not stuck between some event-driven/polling architecture, but purely sticking to event-driven.
Consider using a Picture Control if you want the background to be loaded dynamically, and consider a picture ring if you would like static background options. Remember to consider the size (bytes) of your application, however. Large pictures easily eat up a larger footprint than the app code.
You are a very talented artist.

  • Ubuntu Netbook Remix on S10e

I am thinking of buying the S10e linux edition and will probably put Ubuntu netbook remix onto it bacause i a m already familiar with ubuntu. Has anyone had any experience doing this? Does it run well?
Additionally, does installing a new OS void the warranty? I understand they will not support any software problems i have but will the warranty still cover a hardware failure?

Pretty sure Lenovo policy would support their hardware warranty.
But hardware problems are often difficult to discern from software problems.
I suspect customer support would hang-up if you called.
They don't have a question-answer tree for Ubuntu.
As insurance, I'd install Ubuntu on a small inexpensive, even used,
internal hard drive, and save your perfect 160 hd for later.
A few months ago, I had an empty partition on my S10.
I was looking forward to trying Unix, and installed Ubuntu.
    Well..you have some experience.
But for me, many things didn't work.
No wireless although wired lan worked, no F-keys, no Bluetooth,
strange screen resolution issue and much more.
Spent a couple hours online looking for solutions, but decided not to bother.

  • Cannot get NB305 to boot USB drive to install Ubuntu 9.10 remix

I've created the Ubuntu 9.10 remix boot USB drive on another linux system.  I've altered the NB305 BIOS to boot from the USB stick first.  But whenever I restart the light on the USB stick flickers then the netbook continues by booting from the hard drive, i.e. Windows 7 starter.   Any suggestions?

I've created the USB drive twice.   The first on a MAC using the exact steps defined on the page

  • Arch on Netbook

Don't know much about netbooks or their Atom CPU but can I simply install a x64 ISO on this machine? The Atom CPU is 64bit however I recall hearing that you need an ISO which is optimized for netbooks like Ubuntu has a 'netbook' edition ISO. How does this work for Arch?

    +1.
Boot time in Arch is waaaaay better than boot time in Ubuntu. That is even before opening a *DM.
My current boot time in Arch is about 6 seconds from grub to SLIM versus 30 from grub to GDM in Ubuntu. GDM is a hog, but even then, 6 seconds on a measly Celeron 900 is quite impressive.
BTW: I did like the NBR interface, but te be truly snappy and functional, I prefer LXDE.
Impresive indeed, in my HP mini 110 1020, I've achieved a minimun 24 secs from power-on to a logged-in Xserver running LXDE.
I trully recomend arch for netbooks, the rest is just to slow. If you like UNR, you can have the same desktop installing the propper software with much better performance on arch.

  • MBP won't boot - "GRUB_" - tried installing ubuntu on an external drive

so i tried installing ubuntu netbook remix onto an external drive, and upon restarting my MBP won't boot to my internal HDD, once it displayed "GRUB_" with a blinking cursor, but is otherwise unresponsive.
now i just get the folder with the ? on it.
I've run disk util, repair permission, repair disk and still no luck.
i can boot the MBP into target disk mode and see the HDD on my other system and all appears to be good, and if i boot to the install dvd, the HDD shows up under the "startup disk" menu, but it just doesn't boot.
any thoughts on how to fix this?

So I have an imac that I have had for about 3yrs. About several months ago, it started acting a little strange, it wouldnt pick up the mouse or the keyboard at times even thought they were plugged in properly to the usb port, sometimes both would work sometimes one or the other would work and other times they worked fine. About a month or 2 ago, I went to turn my imac on and it got to the screen where the little circular icon pops up implying it is loading, stayed that way for 2-3min then turned of and turned itself back on and did the same thing, made the apple sound got to the load screen turned of after 2-3min then turned back on, it has been doing that for the past month. What do I do?

  • Can I restore to factory settings from within windows?

    I have an NB205-330 with Windows 7.
I installed Ubuntu Netbook Remix and Grub became my bootloader. Having 2 OS's wasn't as fun as I thought it would be so I'd like to return to just having windows. If I delete the Ubuntu partition Grub still tries to load at startup but nothing happens. So I reinstalled Ubuntu and I can choose which OS to load again. Holding 0 at startup doesn't work, my recovery partitions still show up as healthy, though the recovery media creator says "cannot open target partition" when I start it up. I don't have a big enough USB drive to try and create a system recovery disk so I decided to see if I could create an application recovery disk and that seemed worked fine, so maybe I would be able to create a system recovery disk?
Do I have any options except: 1) buying a bigger USB and see if I can create a recovery disk 2) ordering a recovery dvd

    mini notebook NB205-N330BL
    mini notebook NB205-N330BN
    Maybe one of those minis.
Your problem is that the master boot record (the very first sector on the hard disk) now contains the GRUB loader. The BIOS branches directly to that. You need to replace it with Microsoft's MBR. Follow these instructions.
Turn the computer on and immediately press and hold the F8 key.
On the Advanced Boot Options menu, choose Repair Your Computer.
When you reach the System Recovery Options menu, choose Command Prompt.
Enter this to replace the MBR.

  • Can't connect to MPD over local network - control [solved]

I have a laptop running Arch Linux. I recently purchased an O2 Joggler, and installed Ubuntu Netbook Remix on a USB drive for it (AWESOME, btw). My idea was to use the joggler as a remote control for my laptop, which is often running MPD to listen to my music collect (I'm also using it for light browser etc.)
However, my setup just now isn't allowing me this. Here are some configs that will hopefully help the diagnosis
    mpd.conf:
    music_directory "/home/iain/Music" # Your music dir.
    playlist_directory "/home/iain/.mpd/playlists"
    db_file "/home/iain/.mpd/db"
    log_file "/home/iain/.mpd/mpd.log"
    error_file "/home/iain/.mpd/mpd.error"
    pid_file "/home/iain/.mpd/mpd.pid"
    state_file "/home/iain/.mpd/mpdstate"
    user "iain"
    port "6666"
    bind_to_address "any"
    #password "mpd@read,add,control"
    default_permissions "read,add,control"
    log_level "verbose"
    audio_output {
    type "alsa"
    name "Sound Card"
    options "dev=dmixer"
    device "plug:dmixer"
    format "48000:16:2"
    mixer_type "alsa"
    # mixer_device "default"
    # mixer_control "Alpha"
    #auto_resample "no"
    /etc/hosts.allow:
    # /etc/hosts.allow
    #ALL:ALL:ALL
    MPD: ALL
    # End of file
    /etc/hosts.deny:
    # /etc/hosts.deny
    ALL: ALL: DENY
    # End of file
I'm trying to connect FROM my joggler to my laptop which is running MPD. The laptop's local IP is 192.168.1.70.
I know how awesomely useful the Arch user on these forums are (I've need the help A LOT in the past), so I'm hoping one of you clever lot can help me holmes' this problem.

A hint to open a port
iptables -A INPUT -p tcp -m tcp -s 0/0 --dport <portno> -j ACCEPT.   with the port number for eg 8600 is used to open up the mpd streaming for me.(in arno firewall script you can set these in custom.rules. The rules may differ in your case. A search will give tons of options.

  • Hdiutil in Terminal.

    Hi
I'm trying to create a USB stick with Ubuntu Netbook remix on.
I've found the instructions at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/FromUSBStick
Under the Mac section it says at point 2 to use hdiutil to convert the file. I've said that the file is at: /Users/Emma/Downloads/netbook.iso (which is what mdfind told me!).
However, it gives me an error:
hdiutil: convert: only a single input file can be specified
Any suggestions as to what I'm doing wrong??

Doh! Clearly something wrong, as i've just tried to re-do what I did to take a screenie of it ... and it's working fine.
Must have put some typo or other in & just been totally unable to see it - so just kept copying it. Whoops.

  • Spotify won't run on my IdeaPad S12

    Hi!
A few months ago, I bought myself the Lenovo IdeaPad S12 and I am very satisfied with this netbook.
However, I'm not able to run Spotify on this computer.
I replaced Windows XP with Ubuntu Netbook Remix (first, I tried with Ubuntu 9.10, but it wouldn't run as smooth as I thought it would do....), and I installed Wine and thereafter I installed Spotify. When I had Ubuntu 9.10 running, it worked for a few days, before Spotify collapsed. On Ubuntu NR it won't play music at all. That said: It will play for a few seconds, but it's not possible to hear that this actually is music, it's just noise.....
When I try later on I get the message: "There is a problem with your soundcard. Spotify can't play music".
I've tried to get the sound to work with Wine Config, and I do get a sound when I press "Test Sound", but Spotify is as useless as it were before I started Wine Config.
Can anyone help?? I'm getting a bit frustrated.....

Never mind, I finally got it to work.... I accidently restarted my computer - and then it worked.....

  • System activation code query

I recently purchased a Lenovo Ideapad S10e with SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10 preinstalled. I have created an account with Novell but the site asks for an Activation code to register my system. My documentation from Lenovo doesn't even mention Linux (it's all Windows) much less provide an Activation code.
When I run Novell Customer Center Configuration from YaST it goes through a process which at the end says:
    Your configuration was successful
An update server has been added to your configuration
At no point am I asked to create an account I can use to access the Novell Customer Center website.
The Novell Customer Center Configuration entries it creates do mention a username but it's a 32 character hex string which the Novell Customer Center website doesn't accept.
Although I guess the key thing is I have the necessary Configured Software Catalogs and they do seem to work, I wonder if they will only work for a limited period?
I know with preinstalled Windows the onus is on the PC Manufacturer to support the software, would the same be true with SUSE Linux preinstalled by Lenovo?
    Thanks for any advice
    Lester

I used the restore disc and set up the Novell Customer Center Configuration during the initial installation. I told it to include registration information under the "Include for convenience" section... I don't recall that in YaST. It did some stuff, taking forever, and eventually landed me at a Novell web page where I was prompted to click "Continue." There was no prompt for a serial number or anything. After a few more minutes of doing whatever it was doing and accepting Novell's public keys, I ended up with functioning updates. Yay!
That said, I've discovered that the 4GB model I have doesn't even have enough leftover space to apply the updates. LOL!
I'm going to try Ubuntu Netbook Remix and Moblin but, like you, I'll probably settle with the latest regular Ubuntu (or as much of it as I can fit on the drive!)

  • Please help me identify this Linux distribution

    Hi!
I recently stumbled upon a netbook Linux distribution which where booting very fast but I somehow can't find it again. They had a link to a youtube video on the distros frontpage showing it boot in only 7 seconds (I think). It had a typical netbook interface with taps on the left for stuff like media, internet, etc. Immediately after boot it showed a internet connection tool making it easy to connect to a wireless network. I think the deafult color scheme was something with blue/black.
I've looked trough all the top 100 distros on distrowatch and I've been searching around the net but i can't find this distro. If someone know what distro it is I'd be very happy to hear it

Not Jolicloud either. It was looking a bit more "homemade" than Jolicloud and Xandros.
It isn't any of these either: Ubuntu Netbook Remix, EasyPeasy and MeeGo.
EDIT: I finally found the video I was talking about on YouTube. The distro is xPUD

  • MSI Windtouch AE1900 Touchscreen

So I purchased one of the MSI all in one touchscreen machines.  When I received the machine it installed Windows Vista Basic and then started installing all of the tools.  After waiting a while it finally got into Windows Vista and the touch screen was working, it was just way off.  So after I found the calibration software that came with the machine, I finally got it to pick up pretty well, just not perfect, by using the (I believe) 32 point calibration.
So while Vista was working decently, it was all in all just pretty slow on this machine.  1.6 Atom and 2 GB of ram is not all that powerful.
So I left the factory restore partition on the machine and formated the 40gb system partition that they provided.  I then installed Windows 7 Ultimate.  Now everything worked great from beginning till end.  Did not even need to calibrate it, it was perfect and not loaded down with 3rd party software.
So this was Saturday night.  I turned it off because it seems to have an issue with actually turning off the screen and leaving it off.  I turn it on Monday night and the calibration is WAY off.  I tried using the built in calibration as well as doing a custom one with 114 different points and there is nothing I can do.  I figure before i give up on it i'd ask if anyone had any advise.
Now I would restore back to factory to see if that software works, but I did not use the Blank CD to make a recovery disk but I imagine I can try that if I need to.   Any advise would be helpful.   Also the screen, when you touch on the left side it shows up on the right side.  Doing the 114 point calibration it is not anywhere near as off, but it is still off.  Also it is almost on when you touch the left side of the screen but way off on the right side.
Also I am not sure if this is an issue with all touch screens, but it will not use a screen savor.  It will start the screen savor and then after it comes up just go right back off, as if something moved the mouse/hit the keyboard/or touched the screen.  Obviously it never goes into stand by since it never sits as idol.
    Thanks again

    Hi to everyone
i own the same computer but in the 04 configuration (AE1900-04) with atom 230 (single core) and 1gb ram.
I've used the standard windows xp with some tweaks and it was slow, so i've installed and used:
1: Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.04 --> it's the faster on everything but touchscreen doesn't work, and the resolution is not correctly displayes (only 1360x768 insteal 1366x768)
2: Windows 7 RC build 7100 --> faster than xp but slower than Ubuntu. i've installed the touchscreen drivers from cd and everything worked fine.
3: Windows 7 RC build 7201 --> faster than 7100. is the OS that i'm currently running and everything works fine (with touchscreen drivers downloaded from msi download section).
If you want to know more about windows 7 on this pc, i suggest you 2 sites
1: http://techstauf4.com/ --> he managed to install correctly windows 7 rc 7100 on MSI ae1900-04 (like mine)
2: www.windowsette.com --> italian site on windows7 and office 2010 with all the informations and downloads you need to install and run correclty windows 7. here you are an english translated version: ENGLISH
