NetBoot a Mac OS X 10.4 from Mac OS X Server 10.3

Is it possible ?
each time I start netbooting, the iMac G5 displays the spinning globe under the apple for a few seconds and then a kernel panic occured :
+Unable to find driver for this platform: PowerMac8,1+
My image disk was made with DeployStudio and NetBoot image was created with NetWork Image Utility on Mac OS X Server 10.3
Regards,
Didier.

the kernel panic has gone but I can't go after the spinnig globe.
BTW te spinning globe appears 1 second leaving the grey apple logo alone and then fan of the iMac G5 starts its show !

  • Netboot Error Code: Mac OS X Server 10.4

    Hello,
I have been working on a two-fold Netboot issue when trying to pull an image off of a 10.2.8 iMac and distribute it via Netboot from a 10.4 server. First off, image creation worked just fine. I copied the System Image tool from the server to my 10.4 G4 Powerbook in target mode. The image created OK, and I was able to share it off the server, but after the spinning globe, I got screen corruption that looked like frozen static in the middle of the screen. At this point I pursued troubleshooting the image. I did some reading on various web pages, and got a lead that suggested the image creation machine needs to be the same OS version as the image. (Didn't make much sense, but it was 3PM and I was getting tired of working on it) The System Image utility doesn't work from 10.4 to 10.2.8 apparently as it wouldn't start. I removed the images from the server and unchecked all the images in Server Admin under Netboot. At this point Netboot crashed and gave me this error when trying a "serveradmin start netboot", which persisted even after a reboot: serveradmin[12660] Exception in doCommand: * -[NSCFArray addObject:]: attempt to insert nil
netboot:error = "NILRESPONSEERR (* -[NSCFArray addObject:]: attempt to insert nil)"
Wierd. Our main Mac guy that handles this stuff is overseas for Christmas, so I'm stuck with making this work. I picked up quite a bit and I'm a fast learner, but I'm just not very adept with the Mac imaging stuff yet. Maybe I'm missing something basic, but that's why I'm asking. Any ideas?
    TIA

  • Netboot non mac Client

    Hello,
I had search to boot my windows clients (with linux image) from my osx server.
    But it doesn't work...
Someone have had an similar experience wich it work ?

It certainly isn't possible with "Netboot" - as in the ServerAdmin GUI or the applications that deal with it strictly (ie, Sys Image Util).
Non-Mac systems don't use Openfirmware or EFI, which has certain Netboot modules or packages to aid in netbooting a Macintosh computer.
What you need is to setup a DHCP server somehow (presumably, not with ServerAdmin). You'll need to map a static address to the client's MAC address, and setup the DHCP option to pass a "filename" parameter to the client.
You will have to use PXELinux (http://syslinux.zytor.com/pxe.php), which is basically an image file that your PXE complaint "non-mac" system will use when it boots up into the Network Boot ROM.
You can use TFTPServer (http://ww2.unime.it/flr/tftpserver/) to help setup the TFTP part of Netbooting, which PXE uses to grab the PXE image that you define with the DHCP filename option.
PXELinux itself will fetch a configuration file, which ultimately leads to more file images that basically boot Linux up eventually.
PXELinux has some good information on it's homepage.
This page (http://linux-sxs.org/internet_serving/pxeboot.html) also has some good pointers- but beware. They are for a Fedora Linux system (the Netboot server itself is running Linux), so most of it won't apply to MOSX (ie, /etc/dhcpd.conf isn't present- I don't know where MOSX keeps it's DHCP settings for the DHCP Server). The PXE Setup and DHCP setup is pretty much the same if you can figure it out.
Netboot is really only dependent on TFTP and DHCP. This might be how Apple does things too, I don't know. Ether way, Mac OS X Server should have everything you need already installed. Configuring it properly is up to you.

  • I want to install XP Pro SP2 on a Mac Mini from a 2003 RIS server.

I want to install XP Pro SP2 on a Mac Mini from a 2003 RIS server. Is this possiIble? How is it done?
The mac has 10.5 which has bootcamp to enable Windows install. I have created a partition but the bootcamp utility asks for a CD. I want to install a RIS build. The Mac has a option for network boot but this seems to only work with Mac Server. I assume the network adapter is not PXE compatible and so a boot disk of some kind will be needed to kick this off?.

Since upgrading to Mavericks, my Canon MP980 printer no longer works. I've tried deleting the printer and adding it again. I've downloaded the driver software from Canon. My Mac dropbox tells me "the selected printer software is available from Apple", but when I click to download it, the process ends with my mac saying the software is not currently available from the software update server.

Open Finder and click on Go > Go to Folder. Then type
    /Library/Printers/Canon
and press Enter. This will show the BJPrinter and iJScanner folders. You could try moving or trashing this folder and then installing the driver that you downloaded from Canon again.

  • Can I remove all but the last "Mac OS X Server certificate management" application password from my System Keychain?

I am slowly nursing a broken Montain Lion Server back to health. The problems started with a name change days ago then went sour, probably because of some stuff in the keychain that tripped the commands up.
I have now a trusted Root CA in my System Keychain which has signed my wildcard Certificate for my domain and all my services are protected by this wildcard certificate. Creating and installing that certificate helped me back (slowly) but there are still problems to solve
I also have set the com.apple.servermgrd identity preference to this (now trusted) wildcard certificate a few minutes ago
I am busy cleaning as much as possibe of junk from my Keychains to improve stability, of course without damaging things (I hope)
There are 19 "Mac OS X Server certificate management" application passwords in my System Keychain.
12 are from 9 days ago when I installed this clean OS X Mountain Lion Server for the first time, created within a minute during server install.
1 from 6 minutes later, maybe when I turned on a Service
2 are from that day, but 2 and 3 hours later (also probably because of something I did in Server.app, like enabling a service)
1 from 2 days later (probably when I tried to change the server name/domain)
1 from again 5 days later (probably when I tried to change the server name/domain again)
1 from yesterday, when I changed the servername
1 from today, when I changed the server name again.
What are these application passwords for and can I safely remove all but the last one? What are they for?

I went ahead and remove them a month ago. So far, there don't seem to be any issues. As long as you double-triple-check that the hash-number in those "Mac OS X Server certificate management" keychains _aren't_ in the filename of any of the *.pem files in the /etc/certificates folder, you can delete those orphan keychains.

  • Mac os x server 3.0.2 open directory master disappear from list

Hi, There is a very funny Mac OS X Server 3.0.2 issue.
After I updated my mac os X server from 3.0.0 to 3.0.2. as my host name is conflict with other Mac mini, I changed X server's Mac mini's host name, computer name and localhost name. When I restart my x server. My defined "Open Directory Master" disappear from my server list.
Actually, I need to change some setting from UI, as it disppeared from UI, I can't do any about it. Is there any way to delete it from command line? or How I can enable it appear again?

As can't find the defined open directory server master, have to delete it from terminal command line as:
    sudo slapconfig -destroyldapserver
and then add a new open directory master.

  • How to change from Mac OS X to Mac OS X Server

Hello everyone? I have a Mac Pro Late 2013 with Mac OS X v10.9.4. I want to change from Mac OS X to Mac OS X Server v10.9.4. Is it possible?

If an enterprise mail server is a requirement, then I'd generally recommend installing Windows Server, with Active Directory and Exchange Server, Sharepoint server and related features.  Not OS X Server.
OS X Server includes the Postfix and Dovecot packages and related tools, and which are common Unix servers used for mail.
If you want to run the integrated mail server within OS X Server, you'll need both private (assuming a NAT'd network) and public DNS services must be entirely correctly configured — other mail servers will use any of your DNS configuration errors as a reason not to accept mail from your server, and potentially as a reason not to send mail to your server — and you'll need static IP from your ISP, and a decent-grade firewall, and preferably a firewall with an embedded VPN server and with DMZ capabilities configured to keep any server breaches contained and separate from your inner network.  Your firewall will usually need to have TCP port 25, TCP 587, and either TCP/UDP 995 or preferably TCP 993 open, and forwarded through; the appropriate ports for whatever services you're using.
You'll generally not want to have your internal, private, NAT'd network DNS servers accessible to and serving translation publicly.
Or yes, Kerio does quite well, and is definitely a step or two up from the standard mail software in OS X Server — though nowhere near what Exchange Server and Active Directory and the rest can provide for a typical enterprise.
As for many of the questions that can arise when configuring OS X Server via Server.app for DNS and mail, please see the help within Server.app.

  • Can I upgrade from Mac OS X Server 10.6.8 to Lion?

I am currenty running a Mac mini with Mac OS X Server 10.6.8 and would like to upgrade to plain Lion OS X, can I do this or will their be problems going from a server OS to the normal OS?

Choose About this Mac from the Apple menu, click on More Info, and check the model identifier against the following, which are the earliest Macs of each type that can run Mountain Lion:
    iMac7,1
    MacBook5,1
    MacBookPro3,1
    MacBookAir2,1
    Macmini3,1
    MacPro3,1
    Xserve3,1
If your system's compatible, buy it from the Mac App Store. A computer incapable of running Mountain Lion which has a Core 2 Duo(not Core Duo) or better CPU and at least 2GB of RAM can run Lion 10.7, which is available by phoning the online Apple Store and ordering a download code for it.

  • Need to update from MAC OS X server 10.4.11 to MAC mini server, any tips?

Hello I am having issues to migrate from a Mac OS x server version 10.4.11, processor 2GHZ PowerpcG5, to a brand new mac mini server running mavericks.
I been reading posts in the communities saying that I will need to get a snow leopard first(?) can I get MAC OS X snow leopard, or it needs to be MAC OS leopard server?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hello,
I do not know for certain, but what little experience I have with Server, my guess is that you'll have to get 10.6 Sever.
It's not available online, but might still be had by calling Apple & asking for... Part Number: MC588Z/A
Or, you might repost in one of these areas...

  • Mac OS-X server upgrade from v3.2.1 to v.3.2.2

Hi, I just upgrade my OS-X to Yosemite. But I found that my Mac OS-X server cannot work. It is version3.2.1 and I cannot upgrade to version 3.2.2. My server is now stop working. Any suggestion?
Do I need to delete the OS-X server and download the new one again from Apple Store. I need my server back again ASAP as it holds all my teaching notes for my students, thank you
    Jimmy from Hong Kong

Thank you for your advice. Unfortunately, the Apple Store only has OS-X server 3.2.2. When I tried to upgrade it and I got the error message again " Server can’t be installed on “Macintosh HD” because the version of OS X is too new."
Any advice to find the OS-X version 4.0 from Apple Store.
    Thank you

Are your Fedora users in LDAP?
Apple has their own schema file, in /etc/openldap/schema, that is used in their user account entries. An LDIF-formatted user account looks like this, in OSX:

You'll have to skip the authAuthority entries. One of them is for the password server, where Apple stores passwords, and the other obviously is for Kerberos. I think I read somewhere that you can actually use the userPassword: field if you put a plaintext password in there. I'd be interested to know if {crypt} or {md5} would work, like they do in regular OpenLDAP deployments.
Once you have the users imported into OpenDirectory, you can create the password server and Kerberos entries using the Server Admin tool, although this might require changing the password.
As for email, are you already using a recent version of Cyrus IMAP? If so, you just need to copy the files over (after importing users). If not, there are scripts floating around that can convert email from other systems to Cyrus.
    Cheers

  • Mac OS X Server Questions from a Newbie?

After a lengthy discussion with an Apple Genius, I'm considering setting up my office Mac Pro 3,1 8-core tower with Mac OS X Server. From what I understand, this will enable users logging in with lower powered equipment to take advantage of the processing power of the Mac Pro. Plus, I'll be able to login via Ethernet when traveling and use applications that exists on the Mac pro as well as share files.
Does that mean that any Mac or PC logging into my Mac Pro as a client will effectively be a dumb terminal? Will PC/Windows users see the Mac OS X operating system on their laptops when they do this? I'm just trying to get a better understanding of how all of this works before I implement it.
    Thanks!

From what I understand, this will enable users logging in with lower powered equipment to take advantage of the processing power of the Mac Pro.
I'm not really sure what that means, but it's true only if they log in remotely via Screen Sharing, and you don't need OS X Server for that.
I'll be able to login via Ethernet when traveling and use applications that exists on the Mac pro as well as share files.
That's true, but again, you don't need Server for it.
Does that mean that any Mac or PC logging into my Mac Pro as a client will effectively be a dumb terminal?
In a sense, if you're thinking of Screen Sharing.
Will PC/Windows users see the Mac OS X operating system on their laptops when they do this?
    Yes.
