Netboot: kernal panic at startup (clients) - no sharepoint tab for NetBootSP0

Hey all:
I'm trying to set up a Netboot image. Netboot Service is running, as well as NFS and AFP for the NetBootSP0 and NetBootClients0 sharepoints. Holding down N finds the NetBoot server OK, but I get a kernal panic when I select it. I get the globe and then the gear, and then PANIC. "NFS server refused mount" is the message.
I've searched around quite a bit. I think I may have a lead but don't quite know how to fix it.
When looking at the sharepoints in Server Admin I see the following for the two relevant sharepoints...

NetBootSP0:
From what I've read, I have to set the NFS export to World, but the NetBootSP0 sharepoint doesn't offer a SharePoint tab (compare areas indicated with the red circle), so I'm unable to select Protocol Options and confirm the NFS and/or AFP settings. Should this tab be there? Why might it not be?
Any help is appreciated. I've been having quite the week looking into this.

I no longer have a 10.6 server setup, so I'm going from memory here...
It looks like the sharepoint wasn't created properly. I would go into the NetBoot panel and completely tear down the configuration (disable ports, sharepoints, save.) Then reconfigure it and see if that causes the sharepoint to be configured properly.

Kernal Panic in Startup

I have a MacBook Pro 17" (not unibody) with the GeForce 8600GT graphic card. The last two days my computer has had strange errors. The screen starts flashing, and the computer freezes. The only thing to do is to power off. When I started the computer again I got the Kernal Panic during startup. I've done a hardware test, and it found no error. Changed the harddrive with a new OS - same error. Reset the "cmdalt+PR", same error. I then took out the Airport card, and then it worked perfectly.
The next day the same problem came back (even without a Airport wifi card). Restarted the computer, and got the Kernal Panic during bootup. I reset the "cmdalt+PR", and then it worked.
What is wrong with the computer? I don't think it is the usual nVidia error with the 8600GT card.

The Nvidia problem isn't something that is always "there", Andriaz. It occurs, as I understand it, because of heat stress generated by the GPU on its connection with the motherboard, and is accordingly potentially "progressive" rather than "there" or "not there" (Some companies, I gather , have been making a living by simply reflowing the connections between the GPU and the motherboard accordingly when people have not been able to obtain service under the extended repair program.)
So the fact that you "tested" for the NVIdia problem in the past doesn't mean that you might not be suffering it now.
My own experience of the NVidia issue involved blank screens rather than KPs, but I gather it can be manifested in a variety of ways (which makes sense given its nature). Given your log results I don't think you should discount the possibility that this is the cause of your problem. I'd get it tested again.
Have you tried running the basic Apple Hardware test using your original OS DVD set yet? Might throw up other possibilities. As BB suggests, from the description it is likely to be hardware related, I think.

Freezes, kernal panics, long startup, hanging on blue screen...

sometimes on black screen, freezing when desktop appears, freezing when
using Safari and Mail, text edit and have not had a chance to see what it does in other programs.
This had been a growing problem from the first kernal panic I had about month ago after a complete reinstall in December. Also the fans run loud.
After reading more about kernal panics, i'm beginning to think this is a hardware problem and I should replace by RAM with what was built for this
G5. I cleaned it out yesterday. it was pretty dusty because it sits on the floor. Would a professional cleaning be in order?
I think I'm asking: what software approaches should I take and what physical approaches should I take to isolate the problem the soonest. Can someone send me a list off Apple's site and I'll start to go through them before I have to, yuck, reinstall all over again?

Since I just ran the test recently, I was pretty certain it was the C key. Copied here directly from the User Guide on this iMac G5. (But maybe it's different for the Tower, which this seems to be.)
"Using Apple Hardware Test
You can use Apple Hardware Test to help determine if there is a problem with your
computer’s hardware.
To use Apple Hardware Test:
1 Disconnect all external devices from your computer except the keyboard and mouse.
If you have an Ethernet cable connected, disconnect it.
2 Insert the “Additional Software & Apple Hardware Test” disc that came with your
computer.
3 Restart your computer and hold down the “C” key as it starts up. A list of available

Kernal Panic during startup.

Please help,
I get a kernal panic when i try to start my iMac.
Same thing happens when i try safe mode and when i select the OS X install disk i can here it spinning but kernal panic happens before disk options come up.
I have tried single user mode and running fsck but that didn't help either.
I don't have any third party hardware installed.
In single user mode it says that my root_device is read only.
can anyone tell me how to change that at the command prompt and if that would help.

No i didn't get to the DVD desktop at all and I'm using a white USB keyboard.
If I hold c, i can here the disk spinning but before anything comes up i get the kernel panic.
Same happens if i hold alt and pick the OS X Install disk as the boot disk.
I also have the latest version of disk warrior. When i try using that to boot it spins for about 10 minutes before the same kernel painic.
Under Single-User mode, it says that my root directory is read only. I have tried umount and then remounting the root directory as read write but nothing changes - The entire macintosh HD with whatever errors on it is read only.
I have tried fsck and fsck_hfs and it says ¨macintosh HD appears to be ok¨.

Kernal Panic At Startup

HI i have a MBP and go to college for the last week i have been getting the Kernal Panic at the start up while at school but when i went home and nothing was pluged into my computer it started up fine. so when i got back to school i started try to start up with pluging 1 thing out to try to find out what was causing the Kernal Panic. it seemes like that either my printer pluged in by USB or my Power cord are causing them would that make any sense.

if they can't resolve it via
phone, have them send it in for repair.
Which would not resolve anything if it is an invalid driver being used for the printer. It would be returned as no toruble found, yet your printer would continue to cause the issue at home.
if that doesn't resolve it, it could be a hardware issue.
back up your hard drive and request a new machine.
Apple will not replace your macbook simply because a third party peripheral device causes a kernel panic.
you should be stressed nor should you be tasked with
troubleshooting a $2,000 laptop that's no more than a
few months old.
Actually yes, computer maintenance and upkeep does fall to the owner. Making sure all software, firmware, and drivers are up to date is your responsibility, and one should never expect Apple to be able to remedy any situations that arise when these are neglected.
Best solution is to download all software and firmware updates for the computer, and make sure your drivers for your printer are up to date as well. If the issue occurs when no peripheral devices are attached but on the AC power, I would advise testing the computer with a known good adapter (this can be done at an apple store or authorized service provider.)

Kernal Panic on Startup

Hey,
I just got a new Macbook Pro 13" and installed 10.6.3 on it after formatting the disc.
Startup went smooth and I started Software Update to update everything to the latest version. This was gonna take 2 hours so I went away. After I came back the screen was black and the Macbook wouldn't react to anything anymore. So I forced it to shutdown by holding down the power button.
Now it won't startup anymore: not from the HD, not from the CD (with either 'C' or 'D' pressed, and not from my external Firewire 800 Harddisc with OSX10.6.6 on it. Also booting into target disc mode or single user mode us impossible.
Two things can happen now:
- Either the machine boots and I see the gray apple logo; but then a Kernel panic follows.
- Or I hear three beeps and three beeps again and again and again untill I force it to shutdown again... So it beeps not once! But a whole sequence of beeps; meaning it doesn't follow the description of this article: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1547
Still I tried to reinsert the RAM, but that didn't help; the RAM inside was never touched by me before; it came like this from Apple...
Anybody any idea what I can do?

Kernal Panic at Startup - iBook G4 1.33

Hi There,
I bought this second hand knowing there was a problem with the Airport card. Its a perfect little machinein great condition except when I start up I get the black screen of deatn (hold down the power button...) I restart a second time and no problems the ibook works like a dream.
Now I know the Airport card is faulty and have it turned of, would this still cause a problem? Does it mean I have to get a new one or is it another problem manifesting itself? As usual any help or advice is much appreciated?

Hey Paul Mcdaid & welcome to the forums.
Is the Airport card removable? If so, try removing it and reinstalling the card to see if that helps.
Are you near an Apple store at all? The folks there should be able to try a known-good card in your machine to see if the issue persists. If a known-good card also causes problems, then you would need to invest in a 3rd-party wireless adapter.

Kernal panic osx cannot startup

Hello,
I have a 2011 macbook air that shipped with 10.7. I updated to 10.8 today and after the install and upon try to startup was met with the kernal panic multilingual 'there was a problem...you need to restart your computer...wait or press a key' message. pressing a key (or waiting) restarts the startup only to get the same message a few seconds later (usually just after it shows the login screen for a couple seconds). i can startup in safe mode and have performed disk permissions verification and repair successfully (there were some verification errors that were repaired. i also reset the pram just for kicks. in safe mode, i did a software update (but for whatever reason the smc firmware update doesn't seem to take, as it shows up again when i start back up). i can see all my files and applications in safe mode so i'm hoping not to wipe the disk. can someone recommend a way out? thanks.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Select the most recent panic log under System Diagnostic Reports. Post the entire contents — the text, please, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header and body of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don't post shutdownStall, spin, or hang reports.

Kernal Panic after update to 10.4.6/Missing HD Space/Won't Startup from DVD

Sorry to lump three problems together, but they may all be related.
First - I was getting random Kernal Panics while at 10.4.5, so I attempted to update to 10.4.6. The computer wouldn't even come close to starting up. I got a screen full of Kernal Panic info. I reinstalled Tiger 10.4.3, and that's where the system stands now. It's running fine.
Second - My computer suddenly announced that the startup drive was out of disk space. I looked and the window said 30g. I closed the window and opened it again only to see it at zero k. I dumped some items to get some disk space, but now I can't get my 30g back.
Third - I want to startup from the Tiger disk like I did when I reinstalled, but it won't startup from the DVD. I'd like to run Disk Repair on the main hard drive. It showed some errors when I ran a Test using the Disk Utility.
I'm hoping this is all related. The computer seems to be running fine, but I can't update or find my missing space. Any advice I can get on these issues would be appreciated. Thanks.

Is your computer saving a panic.log after each of the kernel panics? You can see by opening Console (in /Applications/Utilities) and looking for it. I'm not at my Mac now, so I can't tell you under what section to look for that log.
When you try to boot from the CD, are you holding down the 'C' key as the computer reboots? You can also try rebooting with the Option key pressed, which will present you with a list of bootable volumes. It will also give you access to the Apple Hardware Test (if this is the DVD that came with the computer). If you can select the Apple Hardware Test, I'd recommend doing the Extended Test, which will test the hardware, including the RAM.
For the disappearing disk space, you could have some process that is going bezerk and filling up the log files. In any event, to see where you disk space is being used, download and run Omni DiskSweeper.

Recurring kernal panics solved by cloning startup drive back to internal.

My MacBook Pro is about 14 months old. This scenario started about 8 months ago About every 4 - 6 weeks I start getting kernel panics with increasing frequency. Resetting PRam doesn't seem to help. Booting off an external firewire drive doesn't stop the kernal panics and I even get kernel panics starting off the install disk. I've done a clone of my internal drive to an external sata drive connected to my dual2.5gig G5 connecting the macbookpro to the G5 using target mode (I put the macbookpro in target mode). If I reformat the internal drive using the install disk and clone the startup drive back from the sata drive connected to my g5 (again starting the macbookpro in target mode) everything returns to normal for about a month and then the same thing starts happening again.
Any ideas what I could do to avoid this recurring problem.

If it were me I'd suspect a hard disk problem as well. They can and do fail, and whilst I guess it can happen at any time, they do seem to fail either very early on (in the first few months) or very late on (after several years). When the problem occurs, if the drive doesn't show up in the disk utility, it would seem to be something fairly fundamental that a reformat probably wouldn't solve anyway. I guess you could just check the power and ribbon cables are seated securely, but failing that, trying another hard disk would be one option. That would prove whether the problem lies with the drive or the computer. Most external drives are just normal internal ATA drives mounted in an external FireWire or USB enclosure. It may be possible to remove your external drive from the enclosure and install it internally just to see whether that fixes the problem.

Kernal Panic occurs because of a startup item.

I am getting a Kernal Panic when I startup my MacBook Pro, and I think it is because of a startup item. I notice it appears in the dock to startup and then the Kernal Panic occurs. I tried force quitting the app when it appered and still go Kernal Panic and was forced to restart. I have repaired and verified permission of the disk, and have repaired the disk using the OSX DVD and Disk Utility. Is there a way to disable startup items from the OSX DVD or am I looking at having to do a reinstall of the OS. I would rather not do that, so anything will help.

Thanks, That did it! I was able to go into the HD and get the files that were causing the problem. They were not listed in the Login Item under Account Prefs so I had to search the HD and bootin in Safe Boot allowed me to find them and delete them. Thanks a lot. I don't like reinstalling unless I have to. You saved me some time, and I didn't have to wait on the phone.

Startup trouble and kernal panics

Okay, I feel like crying . . . I am not that Mac savy so here is the dilemna.
When I startup my IMAC the screen will either
1. Go to a grey screen with different languages telling me to restart ( I have been reading about Kernal panics . . . )
2. Computer starts up and the picture is all jagged with lines running horizontally through it and it is shaking . . . freezes or then it goes to restart screen.
I have reinstalled the MAC OSX software and then it is fine. But I have not done an erase and install. I am in the process of backing up my system. But if I shut it down or restart, it starts all over again . . .
Do I have a serious problem ? Here is the other problem . . . we do not have the extended warranty. We bought it before the warranty was up, but did not register it before the year ran out . .. A MAJOR MISTAKE!!! Now I am really crying . . .

Hi Laura, welcome to Discussions, sorry your first post has to be so traumatc!
Once you have backed up your system (very good idea), insert your startup disc and run the Extended Hardware Test. That might indicate what your problem is. Also, if you have a Rev A iMac (without iSight or ambient light sensor, you can check this site iMac release dates to see which model you have), see if your serial number falls within the range of the Repair Extension Program, which will repair your machine for free if it's included.
Do post back with your results, hope this is a little reassuring, all is not lost.

Grey startup screen on my profile, but I can access guest profile and my hardrive partition to windows?!?! I had a kernal panic after it was knocked off coffee table in my user account, now I cannot access it from safe mode or anything... :(

My laptop fell off the coffee table, and slammed shut. It then produced a kernal Panic to restart, which I did. It the brings up the user icons, mine and guest, but will not go past the grey screen with spinner on mine. It does let me into the basic safari setting I had on the guest user, AND when i press option on start up, will let me access the windows partition I have set up and all works fine.
I have tried safe mode, safe mode with display screen and the NVRAM/PRAM restarts, and nothing!
I have let the battery run completely, restarted, filled up the battery before starting.... everything.... anybody have any ideas? else I am going to have to visit a genius! grrrrrrr....

Looks like that is what you are going to end up doing. No telling what was damaged internally.

Startup Issues, Kernal Panics, and much much more

I'm having a myriad of issues with my G4. They started a month or 2 ago with a bunch of kernal panic restart-screen fun, at different times. Upon restart, the Question Mark folder comes on screen. Most of the time, it finds my backup system on my external drive. Occasionally it doesn't, and just sits there (so I restart).
When it does find the backup system, everything starts up fine, except my internal drive is nowhere to be found- not the desktop, in disk utility or techtool.
And sometimes, everything goes back to normal. disk utility doesnt find anything wrong, but techtool is very prone to crashing/freezing.
A few weeks ago, I backed up evreything and reformatted my internal HD (which is only a few months old). The problem seemed to stop for a while, but now its back in the past few days.
I've zapped PRAM/NVRAM, reset the PMU... And occasionally, when my intHD decides to show itself and I run disk utility on it, it freezes while "Gathering Disk Information."
It sounds like a disk problem to me, but I just reformatted the disk... could it be back so soon? Could something else be to blame?
Sorry for being long winded, but this is driving me nuts.
