NetBoot Older Systems

Have a Mac Pro set up as an AST & Reimaging server via Netboot/Install, and am having difficulties getting it to work with older Macs (all Intel based). I deal with the full range of x86 Macs, and even the odd PPC system. Running Mac OS X Server 10.6.6, using only the built-in tools for the moment. Nothing like DeployStudio. The one and only thing is I can't remember if I made this retail disc image before or after installing the 10.6.6 update (the disc was 10.6.3). I don't see why that would be an issue, but will mention it anyway.
Replaced the HDD in a Mid-07 iMac the other day, and went to boot my copy of the 10.6 Retail disc from the netboot server to install an OS on it. The iMac flatly refuses to show any netboot images from the EFI boot selector. At one point it showed a generic netboot image icon, which was strobing and couldn't be selected. That lasted for maybe 30-60 seconds and then it disappeared.
While testing to make sure it wasn't something with my server, I grabbed a mid-2010 MBP, which picked up on the images immediately. So I booted off an external HDD on the iMac, and found that the startup disk preference pane recognized the netboot image almost immediately as well, but if I tried to reboot using that image, it just sat there until it timed out.
I don't have the exact logs from the server at the moment, but from the looks of it, the server was trying to send the EFI image to the iMac, but the iMac was refusing to accept it.
I know the mid-2007 line of everything tended to be crap, but I had a similar problem with a Late 2008 MBP earlier in the day. It also refused to show any netboot images, even after I let it sit for probably 30 minutes while I did something else. Apple's documentation has been found severely wanting on these kinds of subjects. Is there some known issue with older Macs and netboot/install? Is it possibly that the drive has yet to be partitioned? That would be a huge oversight, but I can work around that. Looking for any suggestions and/or solutions that may help me to resolve this issue.

AST related issues should technically be redirected to AASP chat...
But I've had issues with using other NetBoot images on an AST server. As a result, I host that image by itself on a separate NetBoot server. As for one machine seeing the server in EFI and one not, there probably isn't an explanation for that. When my NetBoot server does that, I just start and stop the NetBoot service and cross my fingers. Auto discovery just plain out stops working sometimes and doesn't work at all for some machines unless the logic board is replaced. Also, the disk being formatted is irrelevant to the machine booting so I wouldn't be too worried about that.
On the note of the Mid2007 iMac, check the optical drive cable. If faulty (in my experience) it can cause NetBoot issues.
At the boot picker, only Mid2010 and newer machines (with the exception of the older Air) should show the available images on a server. Machines older than Mid2010 will show the IP of the NetBoot server and that would be it (though I realize you weren't getting anything on the iMac). Are you always option-booting or holding "N"?

  • Adding a new Airport express N to an older system with Airport express b/g

    I have the following setup:
    iMac with OS X 10.4.11
Airport Express with 802.11b/g software V6.3(used only for airtunes- with wired speakers)
    Airport Admin. Utility V4.2
Older style airport extreme base station for internet access
I'd like to add another pair of wired speakers in another room via a second Airport express, but am wondering if I can mix and match the 2 "vintage" expresses?
Will my current version of Airport Admin Utility be able to setup the new airport? If not, will the updated utility recognize my older systems?
Any thoughts or suggestions is greatly appreciated.

Sointly, Ollie! (Think Laurel & Hardy) I currently have three fairly ancient AX's that worked just fine on the first gen Extreme, then moved over to Time Capsule (still on B/G speeds, working OK). Also, three USB printers and a 500 GB Seagate USB. Sometimes, the smallest printer, iP90, gets moved around to another AX or a laptop. Each of the Expresses is supplying an independent set of speakers which can be assigned to any source (my wife likes to have her laptop in the bedroom with her own sounds and her own printer). With the coming of Remote on the iPhone, the whole setup can be changed at will.
Can you use Airport Utility ver 5.3.2? Or move up to Leopard? Much easier to use.....

  • Hi. My iMac hard drive is running Mavericks.  I have an old version of Quark Xpress (3.32) which won't run in Mavericks.  Can I partition my hard drive and run an older system on one partition, so I can access my Quark?  Is that possible?

Hi. My iMac hard drive is running Mavericks.  I have an old version of Quark Xpress (3.32) which won't run in Mavericks.  Can I partition my hard drive and run an older system on one partition, so I can access my Quark?  Is that possible?

    Hi ancelau,
QuarkXPress 3 is a Classic Mac OS application, so you need a version of OS X that still supports Classic. I believe 10.4 was the last one.
So if you have an iMac that boots with 10.4, then yes that is possible. I doubt though that newer Macs boot with OS X 10.4.
So why don't you upgrade QuarkXPress 3 to a newer version? I am not just asking that because I want you to spend money with us.
Typically using software that was released almost 20 years ago is just feasible when you keep an environment that was current at the time of release or a few years after, so an older Mac with a operating system present at that time. 20 years in IT is a lot.
So my opinion is that on a new Mac with a brand new operating system you need to use something a bit more current.
How about QuarkXPress 9 (released 3 years ago) or QuarkXPress 10? You are better off with v9, as QuarkXPress 10 only opens v7 and higher (whereas QuarkXPress 9 opens v3.1 and higher).
Or - I am even happy to make an exception - upgrade to 9 and we give you 10 for free? Let me know please.
    Thanks

  • Adobe Flash for my older system will NOT install as per your instructions

Help ... not only can I NOT "reply" to others in these discussions, for some weird reason ... there is absolutely no "reply" button that I can see here ... but when I discovered over the past few days that I can no longer view video clips shared on FaceBook, I followed the directions on YOUR site here, to uninstall Flash, so that I could then reinstall a (hopefully) upgraded version of Flash. Now, I'm totally without Flash, because you don't support the PowerPC's anymore! Also, I've followed instructions provided by one of your forum employees, to try to install the older version of Flash again, and that fails too. Even when opening up the "package" icon, which appears when you right-click the dmg download file. That does not work either! HELP!
I'm on a Mac G5 PowerPC using Mac OS 10.4.11. How do I get flash back? Will I now need to reinstall it using my original Tiger OS software disk??? What a mess this is! Why can't you simply continue to support older systems?
Thank you for any help you can offer. I'm extremely frustrated with this.

Hello, I'm on a bit of a mission spreading the word... I also have a Mac OSX 10.411 (power p.c.). All of the Mac's without Intell went down. Adobe no longer supports power pc's; they only support Mac's with Intell.
The good news is there actually is a simple fix:
    * Follow this link and instruction, which are simple (make sure you leave no spaces)
Download to your desktop, unzip it, and replace the current Flash Player plug-in which is in your main/Library/Internet Plug-Ins folder, (not the user Library). Save the old one just in case this one doesn't work.http://www.steelbin.com/FPforFBPPC.zip
It worked for me, and all the other "older" Mac users.
    Good luck,
    Julie R.

  • Swetypv behavior in older system

SWE2 i think is the equivalent transaction for to SWETYPV in older system 4.5B
In the SWETYPV we have an option where we can set
Event Linkage: Behavior Upon Error in Receiver to do not change linkage.
Do we have some thing we can do in the older system 4.5B for the same.
Now the reason i need this.
    1. In older version when the request is stuck in Trfc (SM58) then the WF deactivates on its own. Apparently this a WF feature . I am pretty sure that the SWETYPV settings in the new system would solve this How do we over come this in the older sytems...
    Thanks for the help guys...
    Enjoi ur long weekend guys!!!...

I am not sure - it has been a few years since we upgraded to 4.6C, but I can not recall such an option in 4.5B.
I think your best option is to ask SAP if they can port it back to 4.5B (I am sure it will be a consulting issue) and consider whether it is worth the money they want for doing it. Perhaps it is cheaper to simply upgrade the system

  • Since upgrading to ios7.02 both safari and chrome browsers crash when I go to a page with the html5 music player on it.  It did not in the older system.  It is too bad I cannot return to the older system.

What can be done?  Can I return to the older system? Bob

The "MySearchDial" app needs to be removed in 4 places.
    1) Go to "add / remove programs" in your windows control panel select mysearchdial and remove it.
    2) Open your Firefox browser then click the Firefox tab at the top left and select options. You will need to change the start page settings back to your preferred start page.
    3) Again under the Firefox tab select "add-ons". In the add-ons manager you will need to remove mysearchdial from both "plugins" and "extensions"
    4) In your search bar (top right of address bar" use the drop down menu and select "manage search engines". You can restore your preferred search engine and remove mysearchdial from the menu.
This should remove all the components of the nuisance hijacker and restore your browser back to your preferred settings. If you are comfortable with a more in depth removal I would also suggest going to your "programs" folder within the "C" drive of your machine and deleting the "MySearchDial" folder altogether. However, only do this AFTER you have uninstalled it from your system and if you are familiar with this type of removal.

  • Using system disks from a newer PM G5 to reinstall on an older system

i am cleaning out 2 of my 3 G5 power macs and i can't seem to find the original system disks for them. These machines are 2.5Ghz Powermac G5's that were bought in Oct 2004 and came with OS 10.3
All I can find is the system disks for the new Powermac G5 2.3Ghz that i bought in Jan 2006 and that came with disks for OS 10.4.
Can I use this newer 10.4 system disk to reinstall the OS on the older machines?

It might need something as simple as a PRAM reset on the Quad. When I moved to the incumbent G5, I restored the boot volume from my B&W G3 onto the boot volume I created on the G5 and had no problem booting from the G5, so this is something of a puzzle.
Another thing you can do is boot to the good (existing) Quad volume, use System Profiler to get a list of the loaded kext files, then do the same back in the 1.8 with the drive in question, then compare the two of them and see what might be missing.
One place to look is the difference in video cards though, as that can definitely be a problem. One missing file can stop things in the tracks, like for instance not having NVDANV40Hal.kext
if you have an Nvidia card in an AGP G5.

  • Premiere Elements 8 on an older system

    Hi there
I'm looking at upgrading to Premiere Elements 8 & Photoshop Elements 8, but have an older 1.8Ghz system.
Looking at the system requirements, it mentions a min 2.0Ghz for Premiere Elements 8, but I wonder if it would still be useable at 1.8Ghz?
I will look to upgrade my system in the next 6 months, but wonder whether I can get by at 1.8Ghz in the meantime?
If anyone has any thoughts/experience with this, it would be much appreciated.
    Regards
    Triffid

I agree with Steve. The minimum requirements are basically to just get the program to run, and not much more. Because PrE 8 has a few additional features, it will require more than previous versions, though some of these features can be turned off.
Also, there is much more to an NLE system, than just the CPU. Probably the most overlooked aspect is the I/O sub-system, i.e. the HDD's, their size, speed, controller type and how the HDD's are allocated. For a new system setup, I strongly recommend Harm Millaard's I/O ARTICLE.

  • Older systems and Flash

    Hello
I run a couple of slightly older machines for light work tasks and browsing and have noticed a problem I can replicate across both of them.
One is a Pentium 4 3.2Ghz machine and one is a Athlon 64 FX 57, neither run a flash accelerated graphics card.
Upon installing flash 17.0.0.145 I get very poor FPS in youtube and much higher CPU usage at default settings.
When using a older version, 14.0.0.145 I get very acceptable playback on both systems with no frames dropped.
In firefox it is easy to rollback but in Chrome for example this cannot be done as the flash is embedded and runs poorly on both systems.
It is a standard Windows Xp Home platform on both machines
Sorry if this has been covered previously.

I can't think of any changes that jump out at me that would have impacted software rendering or video severely in the last couple releases.  Those CPUs do pre-date a lot of the on-chip features that we can use to optimize that work, but that doesn't explain the bug jump in CPU usage.
I've seen a couple similar posts in the last week, and they've all turned out to be malware infections.  WinXP lacks all of the modern OS-level malware protections, and we're seeing the virus kit guys reverse-engineering and weaponizing fixes in new releases for use against old ones inside of a week or two.
I'd recommend a pass with a good anti-virus and anti-malware package (malwarebytes.org is free and well respected).
You might want to make sure that the filesystem is in a good state.  If we're trying to buffer video and running into disk problems, that might cause a bunch of unnecessary thrashing.
Check your hard disk for errors - Windows 7:
    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2641432
You'll need to uninstall Flash Player before you can downgrade.
    Uninstall Flash Player - Windows:
    https://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/uninstall-flash-player-windows.html
If that doesn't help, try rolling back to the extended support release, here: Adobe Flash Player Distribution | Adobe. Scroll down towards the bottom for the ESR builds.

  • Using Tiger's Disk Utility on older systems (10.3) ??

My mom's iMac G4 has been acting up and unfortunately she can't find her
    Panther Install CD.
I want to boot up from my Tiger disk and run Disk Utility for a drive check and possible repair.
Can I use the newer Disk Utility from my Tiger disk on her older Panther system?
I'd boot from my CD-Rom to scan her drive which has Panther installed on it.
    thanks

Doing a disk repair should be OK, but don't do a permissions repair with the 10.4 disk on a 10.3 system. It might be fine, but it's possible that it might mis-set some permissions.

  • Have older system

Have an older Satellite M35X-S349.  Bought it new and it has proven to be a very dependable and reliable system.  Joined up as it is getting older and buggier and hoping to find some solutions.  Recently been getting the "Blue Screen of Death." and immediate shutdown of the system.  I have had problems getting rid of a Kensington Mouseworks installation and the better part of HP printer software.  Most of the HP is still there, despite a regedit and removal of all HP software there.  I have been updating drivers and so far the system seems stable as long as I don't use the internal wifi.  I use it and after a bit of time the screen of death appears and a shutdown.  I have installed the new driver and hope that will fix it.  I am also running into problems with a TrayApp installation occurring at start up, it eats up all of my available ram (have 1.5 gig) and just about shuts down the system.  I am able to over come this through the device manager, where I go to processes and kill the svchost   system process-there are about 3 of them-this one seems to be associated with HP software.  This frees up almost all of my ram and then I have to go to applications and kill the installation of the TrayApp-but only after install wizard has determined that it needs a disc to continue-otherwise all it does is keep reloading and trying to install.  So does anyone have any idea how to fix any of this.  BTW  I am running Windows XP Home 3.  I do have a copy of Windows XP Pro I can run on this machine, if necessary to change the OS.  I would really like to get a solution to this as I really like this computer and use it for American Legion Post information and although I can transfer the information, would rather get this one up and going right.

I have had problems getting rid of  ... the better part of HP printer software.  Most of the HP is still there, despite a regedit and removal of all HP software there.
Be sure the printer has been removed from these two registry keys.
       HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Environments\Windows NT x86\Drivers\Version-2
       HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Printers
Still stuck on the Kensington MouseWorks software, getting a show  button error message for it at start up and cannot find the program to delete from the system
Open the System Configuration utility (msconfig.exe) and uncheck the offending item on its Startup tab.
having problems with the svchost system file eating up all available ram
I have no idea what that means.  Please explain exactly what you see and where - click by click.

  • Can I have my older system upgraded at an Apple store?

I have an early 2009 mini and I would like to upgrade the ram and HD. Currently I have 2Gb RAM and would like to put in the max of 8Gb and also replace the 5200 RPM HD with a 7200 RPM drive. If I buy the hardware myself can I take it to an Apple store to be installed? and how much would that cost? The upgrades are not entirely for an increaes in perfmrance, I've been having trouble with this system since it was new. Every six months or so the file system gets all screwed up and Disk Utility cannot fix it so I have to restore from one of the clones I keep on an external HD. It happended again yesterday .. "invalid node structure"

I don't think you can bring your own parts in to an Apple store and have
them install them.  If you know of some other third party shop, they
    may do it.
As for file system issues, you may want to try Disk Warrior to repair the
directory structure, which is what an invalid node structure usually is.
Disk Warrior can quite often fix corrupted directory structures that
Disk Utility can't.  Disk Warrior can also scan for corrupted files as well.

  • AR 9.4.2 CPU usage on older systems (SUSE Linux 10.0)

    Hi,
in the last few weeks, I spent a lot of time debugging AR eating 100% CPU on a very old system (it is based on SL 10.0 and can't be upgraded easily).
The steps to reproduce the problem:
    - install SUSE Linux 10.0 (VERY old...). It is OK with all newer SUSE distros though.
    - install AdbeRdr9.4.2-1_i486linux_enu.tar.bz2
    Run it.
CPU goes immediatelly to 100%, with empty Reader, no document.
Reader is heavily communicating with X server, which can be seen with xmon tool (ftp://ftp.x.org/contrib/devel_tools/xmon.1.5.4.tar.gz).
I can workaround the problem by:
    - get libs (/opt/gnome/lib, /lib and /usr/ib) from a bit newer distro (10.1 in my case)
    - add them to LD_LIBRARY_PATH, therefore calling the Reader by:
    /ROOT-10.1/lib/ld-linux.so.2 ./acroread
    in the intellinux directory.
This workaround is not proper workaround because the Reader itself can't print afterwards and other similar external tasks.
But the workaround is enough to show that Adobe Reader is very CPU intensive on SUSE 10.0.
    Can you fix it?
    xmon debug output contains MANY:

  • Trying to install 5.1 on older system.

    Hi all.
I'm working on a client's machine and he's just bought Tiger and FCS 5.1 for it. The machine is a bit of a legacy machine, it's a 450mhz DP G4.
Tiger is on and everything is updated to the latest versions and he also has FCP 4.5 on it.
I know that the minimum requirements for FCP 5.1 are a 500mhz G4 and that out of the whole suite it has the lowest system requirements.
When I try to install 5.1 it will let me install everything except FCP which is greyed out and has SKIP in it's action column. THis has me flumoxed since DVDSP etc all have much higher minimum system requirements but the installer has no problems with putting them on to the old machine.
Does anyone have any ideas as to why this is and how I can get FCP 5.1 on the system?
    Many thanks
    John

My understanding of FCP 5.1 is that in only loads on Intel CPU machines.
The new version, however, is truly Universal and is supposed to load on PowerPC and the Intel Core Macs.
