NetBoot preferences unable to be modified

Hi there.
I have a Mac Mini (Early 2006) Intel machine running the intel build for OS X Server 10.4.7.
Everything else works fine and dandy with the exception of NetBoot.
Now,
I have the .nbi files in the correct locations and a while ago I was able to enable / disable these nbi files through the Server Admin utility.
Unfortunatly now all I get is a blank screen in the "Settings" tab of the Netboot section in Server Admin utlity.
Initially I thought this was a Server Admin Utility fault so I went back to the command line and did "sudo serveradmin settings netboot"
To my horror I was greeted with: 2006-09-16 15:21:02.214 serveradmin[337] Exception in doCommand: * -[NSCFArray addObject:]: attempt to insert nil
I've seen similar errors like this before, but usually all services respond the same.
Not the case here, it seems other services can be queried perfectly without issue.
it's just this service.
I've trawled the net for answers and not found anything.
I would be grateful if anyone else has a similar or exact issue and has found a fix for it.
Feel free to post even if you are experiencing the same issue and don't have a fix.
The more the merrier .

  • Unable to change modifier keys on exernal keyboard.

Running a unibody MBP with 10.8.5.  Trying to change the modifier keys (swap Option and Command) on an external USB keyboard (daskeyboard ultimate stealth).  Using Preferences -> Keyboard/Mouse -> Modifier Keys, I select my external keyboard (listed as daskeyboard) and make the switch.  This has no effect.  I am able to change the modifiers on the built in keyboard, but that doesn't help me.
I am not running the KB through a hub, direct connect to USB port.
I have tried all possible combinations of adjust settings, reboot, retry, unplug, re-plug, move plug - no joy.
From other posts here and elsewhere it seems this bug/glitch has been in Apple's side for a lot of years.  Does anyone have a FIX for this that does not involve some hacky workaround where a chicken needs to die?
I run a linux VM on this Mac and it would be really nice if CTRL and ALT were where CTRL and ALT have been for decades.

    Hello
I have a new Toshiba Satellite A75-S209 laptop. Now the keyboard was working perfectly, until i plugged in a external logitech usb keyboard. Now when i try to use the laptop keyboard alone all the characters are messed up.
i have tried to reinstall the keyboard by removing it, but i was not successful .
is there any way of re mapping all the keys?
    or even like keyboard software?!
    thanks

  • Unable to access/modify wifi after Mavericks installation on MacBook Pro

I've just installed Mavericks OS X on my 2011 MacBook Pro. Although quite slow, everything seemed to go smoothly during the installation process. Once booted up in the new OS, I noticed immediately that I had no wifi connection on the device. I am unable to enable/disable the wifi, and more troubling, any attempt to make changes to Network settings seems to freeze up the System Preferences application. Once this occurs, the machine is basically useless. A series of restarts, shut downs, safe-mode boot ups, etc and eventually I was just getting a blank grey screen after startup (no login screen, mouse visible and working). At this point, I booted via the recovery partition and did a full re-install of the Mavericks OS X. Not surprisingly, it did not fix any of the problems.

Very strange problem (no surprise to you).
I suggest you reset the SMC (and PRAM, if you are able). That cannot hurt and might help.

  • Preferences - Links - Ask When Modified - not working

When images are updated shouldn’t you get a dialog box in the program saying that a link had been modified?
This has now happened to me more then once. When images have been updated on the server I am getting no notice of this in Illustrator. The images are just being linked with no warning that they were modified. Thus if an image changed at all in position I won’t get a warning about this, unless I catch it. And if it is very minor, or if say a small part of the image was masked or removed I would not know.
I have attached a screen caption of how my settings are in Illustrator… I should be getting a dialog box asking me what to do.

The dialog has two functions in this case - a warning, and a choice.
The dialog for a color mode conversion could just be a warning without the choice.  The preference does mention being given the choice, but I think the key thing here is the warning.  It's not like we don't have a way to avoid the warning (by unchecking the preference).  The wording could be changed slightly in the Color Settings description to handle the possibility that you won't be asked - it's kind of silly to think the warning could be suppressed because it's not possible to ask the user to maintain the color numbers.
    An example rewording:
Profile Mismatches - Ask When Pasting:  When enabled, you will be notified whenever color profile mismatches occur as colors are imported into a document (via pasting, drag-and-drop, etc.0), and (where appropriate) given the option to override the policy's default mismatch behavior.

  • Unable to permanently modify Guest Account in Mavericks

I have modified the Guest Account to customize the dock, set homepages and go through first-run sequences in Mountain Lion in the past, but when I follow the same instructions in Mavericks I run into a rat's nest of hidden folders.
I am also trying to copy settings for a new copy of Final Cut Pro, but I don't believe that was the reason I was unable to successfully overwrite my User Template/English.lproj/Library folder.
Any help out there?  I'm willing to execute terminal commands, but not too smart about them, so my question might turn into: Do I muck about a lot with unfamiliar and untried commands in Mavericks or roll back to Mountain Lion and do what I know how to do...

I work in a Public Library and I have been able to customize the Guest User so that:
    Homepages for Browsers are set
"First Run" personalization does not need to be done - esp. MS Office
Certain Apple Apps are suppressed (Mail, Contacts etc.)
Icons appear in the dock for software (Adobe Creative Suite, MS Office)
But Mavericks makes many more folders hidden and inaccessible than Mountain Lion did

  • External Drive "unable to be modified" with Mac

    Hi,
I've just begun playing around with my laptop, but am running into problems while moving things around and off of my external hard drive.
Before my Mac that I just got today, I had a Gateway PC laptop that I used my external hard drive with. On the Mac, whenever I try to move a file to a new folder it says that it cannot be moved because the drive cannot be modified. Also, I can't create new folders or even delete things.
I think it has something to do with the formatting, but is there anything I can do that will NOT erase what I have on the hard drive? I have 200+ gigs of data on this drive and no where to temporarily place it while I reformat the drive.
Also, if I do have to reformat the drive, is there a format that works both with Macs and Windows, so I can still use it on friends' and parents' computers.

    Rachel,
Disk Utility is in your "Utilities" folder (of course). Here's how we do this:
    /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility
Let's cover a few terms while we're at it... Disk Utility is rather like iTunes in the way it looks (in fact, most everything "Mac" has a lot of features similar to those in iTunes). The list at the left side of the Disk Utility window (as in iTunes) is called the "source list." In the case of DU, this list shows "devices" and "volumes" at the top. Below those would be shown recent "disk images" that DU may have created or handled (you won't have any, and "disk images" are something you won't encounter for at least a few hours ).
A "device" is something physical, like your Superdrive or internal hard drive, and a "volume" is a logical "container" for files that is created on a given device. Think of it like the trunk of your car (the device), and the organizer you place in that trunk (a volume). DU shows volumes indented below the device that contains them. Since a volume is a logical framework (we call it a "file system") that holds your files, it is actually written to the device.
Windows uses specific "logical frameworks" (NTFS, FAT-32), and Mac OS uses a somewhat different one (HFS+). The Mac OS can, however, read any of the Windows formats ('cause Macs are more better, as you've already found), and DU knows how to write those FAT-32 logical frameworks.
OK, moving on... DU does many things. It can format (erase) volumes, changing them while it's at it if desired, but it can also format or partition a device. There's a bit of a difference between the two, sometimes. For example, you can "zero" either a device or a volume (which means to write continuous zeroes to the entire volume or device, in addition to simply giving it a new framework). One either a device or a volume, this is something you would do to completely destroy whatever data is on the device/volume. If you do it with a device, however, you get the additional benefit of "mapping out" any bad blocks (like dead spots) on the drive. This comes in handy if you ever find you're having problems with your drive.
Another difference between devices and volumes is that devices can be "partitioned". This is when you create multiple volumes on a single device. These separate volumes would appear on the Desktop of your Mac as individual drives, but they all reside on the one device. And of course, they can be of different formats (on my Desktop, I currently have my HFS+ Mac startup disk, and another NTFS disk for Bootcamp, both of them on my internal hard drive).
DU also repairs (or attempts to) errors that might occur in that logical framework we've already covered. These happen for various reasons, most frequently if we have an improper shutdown (such as a power loss). When this happens, we can lose important data. DU attempts to locate the problem, then fix it.
Finally, Disk Utility is what we use to create and manage "disk images". These are single files that act as "virtual disks," and can be "mounted" and "ejected" just like real disks. This is something that you will encounter soon, I'm sure, but don't need to worry about right yet.
I'll continue in another post (yeeesh, am I long-winded sometimes)...

  • Unable to view, modify, or upload photos on many websites

I am unable to view pictures on several websites and am unable to upload pictures to our website when editing the web page. Unable to see picture when uploaded by another user on same page.

Many thanks to all of you who replied , Well I have never had this problem before with down or up loading mail via Pop 3 to my Google , GMX and O2 email accounts until towards the end of last month , First I notice I could not receive or send emails then I noticed I could not even conect to the internet .Yes I could connect to the router Which is a FORTH TOT Fiber link but that works fine . My desk is about 5 feet from the router were I also have my Lap Top which works fine also my Smart TV connects to the router and can down and up load mail  this is how I found out that the Black Berry was not work . I can connect to the Router with the Black Berry and connect to Google or Yahoo but the pop3 link just wont work . So I went to a few other places near my office and tried there WiFiand it was the same it was the same no pop3 forwarding so the problem is the network or the phone . So I reinstall new firmware this was 7.1.0 Bundle 2061and like you say reloading service books but its still the same .Which brings me to think is it the net work .I live in the south of Thailand and been down here since 95 but I think this may have to wait until I return to the UK next year . But its very strange . As for not being able to connect to O2 from thailand well its now working again as before I could only get access useing a VPN . Many Thanks again I wonder if I will have the same problem in Malaysia or Singapore . Cheers

  • Unable to reload modified webservice

I am currently testing the web service capabilities of weblogic.
I am using the WeatherEJB example and modifying the EJB code and going through
the process of adding new methods that can be accessed through the web services.
When I redeploy the ear file the new methods are not available.
The new method on the EJBs remote interface works when the remote interface is
    retrieved through the Home.
I undeployed the webservice and the EJB and then redeployed, but even this does
    not work.
It seems like weblogic is caching something.
    Any thoughts.

  • When attempting to install add-ons, Firefox generates a message saying it is unable to install add-on because Firefox cannot modify the necessary file. To what file is this referring, and how do I fix this problem?

When I download an add-on such as Colorful Tabs and start the installation process, I receive a message that Firefox cannot install the add-on because it cannot modify the necessary file. To what file is this referring?

That is usually caused by Firefox not unpacking the extension.

  • Netboot : boot image - default user settings

    Hello
So far I have successfully created from installation DVDs a netboot boot image and customized/modified it so that I can use it for all users created on the MacOSX Server.
Now for some details I was not able to resolve them. I can not persistently set some computer preferences/settings assigned to the administrator like timezone, ntp-server etc. on the client.
Also I have noticed, that after booting from the netboot image, the client has for the login window an US keyboard layout but should have in our case a swiss-german layout, because otherwise our users can not enter correctly their login passwords, especially if they use some some special characters in their passwords. Is there any way to set this this on the netboot image or in the clients nvram ?
Many thanks in advance, André Müller

/System/Library/User Template is where all of these are stored. You will have enable the root login account and log in to it in order to make changes to that folder with the GUI.
Changing anything in the System folder is always a bit unreliable, though. Apple might release a software update that will undo any of the changes.
If you really are managing 850+ Macs, you should look into getting OS X Server. OS X Server has the tools you need to set up custom templates for new users, without having to muck in the System folder.
