NetBooting occasionally fails
Hello,
I'm not sure if this is the right section for this, but I don't see a NetBoot section and I guess this is the closest thing.
I've set my lab to NetBoot from an XServe using ARD's Set Startup Disk command. I rebooted everything and a few machines started from their internal disk. I labeled those machines red in ARD, manually netbooted them (holding down the N key) then I reset the startup disk on those clients and rebooted everything again. This time DIFFERENT clients tried to boot from their internal drives. I did the same thing and rebooted yet again. This time everything NetBooted, no need to hold down the N key on any machines. Did it again just to double check and everything came up again. Hooray!
A little while later I restarted the lab again for other reasons only to find that nearly half of the computers tried to boot from their internal drives. This time I simply restarted the naughty computers, not bothering to hold down "N." Each and every one of them netbooted. So Startup Disk isn't getting unset
Based on this I would speculate that for some reason the server doesn't get to each iMac in time so some try to boot from their internal drives. Anyone have an opinion on that?
Is there a way to set how long the computer will wait before giving up? Are there common switch configuration issues that might cause this? Unfortunately I don't have much to do with setting up the switches, but I can have our network admin make the needed changes, as long as I know what to ask for.
Thanks for any suggestions!
sean
Thanks for the reply. Keep in mind that I only used one method consistently throughout the entire lab, regardless of which method it was that time. I either booted them all by holding "N" or set them all via ARD. So what my question is, is why the inconsistency?
Booting with N held obviously booted them all up from the network. However setting them with ARD cause some to boot from the network and some not to. Then with the next reboot cycle (without having touched any startup disk settings) a completely different set of computers would boot from the network or not.
So the question, as you indicated at the end of your post, is really whether ARD is supposed to set the startup disk permanently or just for that boot. In either case it isn't working properly because some got set permanently and some didn't.
Oh well. I've actually abandoned NetBoot clients for now -- it was really a bit of an experiment for summer downtime.
Thanks again!

Systemd-logind occasionally fails to start
Hi,
I am running Arch with Cinnamon started by mdm-display-manager. I had this running for quite some time without an issue.
Recently an issue popped out - OCCASIONALLY systemd-logind fails to start and I get stuck on boot screen. This happens maybe once in 5-10 boots. I have to do hard reset afterwards. CTL+ALT+DEL won't work, I can not switch to other console and I have no network to SSH to that machine.
Other than that, system starts just fine.
I am not sure, how to debug this further and would appreciate advice.

May 26 09:42:34 pheHi,
I have exactly the same problem. systemd-logind sporadically fails to start, therefore preventing the login prompt to appear. Resetting the machine is the only solution in that case. Most of the time, the system start works without problems though. Here are a few relevant lines from my logs:
# journalctl --unit=systemd-logind | grep -C50 'Connection timed out'
-- Reboot --

NetBoot Client fails to do Diskless booting
Morning,
I have a setup a NetBoot server with one NetBoot image created using System Image Utility. The image is default and Diskless has been enabled.
NetBoot Server does not do DHCP, that is left to another server.
Because Mac clients exist on different subnets, NetBoot Across Subnets is used to help a client Mac boot from the NetBoot server.
Everything is working as advertised, except for Diskless. The Mac client's fail to use NetBootClients0. All client's end up using the local Hard Drive for /private/var/netboot.
The logs at NetBoot server are set to high but do not show an error with shadowmountpath.
The only error seen at time of client connection is...
Feb 24 10:56:59 hypatia bootpd[329]: server name hypatia.mydomain.com.au
Feb 24 10:56:59 hypatia bootpd[329]: subnets init using domain . failed:
Feb 24 10:56:59 hypatia bootpd[329]: bsdpd: re-reading configuration
Feb 24 10:56:59 hypatia bootpd[329]: bsdpd: shadow file size will be set to 48 megabytes
I am guessing here, but the only thing I can think of is that the NetBoot server may have specified it's afp shadowmountpath using the domain name instead of an IP address. Assuming DCHP (which specifies a DNS) hasn't loaded yet then the path cannot be found and the client boots based on the /etc/rc.netboot startup script.
Can anyone tell me how I can inspect the shadowmountpath response given by the NetBoot server?Well, couldn't do much with NetBoot image being diskless so I stuck with a NetInstall image which forces the issue.

Macbook occasionally fails to wake from sleep
i have a new macbook (purchsed in july) which occasionally (every 1-2 weeks) fails to wake from sleep. it either hangs on the blue screen which first comes up when you switch it on, or on the black screen which normally follows shortly afterwards.
i regularly use it "closed", i.e., with an external screen and keyboard, but the problem seems also to happen occasionally when i switch it on without these peripherals.
any ideas?
i've also had dvd player crash once. it was in full screen mode, and i couldn't switch to any other applications or force quit dvd player, so again i had to cut power.
Macbook Mac OS X (10.4.8)Having similar issues...not that it happens everyday ...it's very infrequent..but yeah im in the same boat..
As far as the computer being hot...
Go to :
System Preference--->Energy Savings
From there you should have the boxed check both on Battery power and AC Cord to put the Hard drive to sleep when possible..
Once i did this it never happened again(the closing of the lid and still running)
as far as the other issue??Help.!!Anyone? -
Outlook "Safe Lists Only" Occasionally Fails to Block
I'm not getting any help at answers.microsoft.com [see http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/office/forum/office_2013_release-outlook/outlook-safe-lists-only-suddenly-fails-to-block/60453019-acd6-45a1-b426-fe44e998e1b2?tm=1406134845058], so I thought I'd try
here:
Recently, beginning in July 2014, occasional spam has started leaking through my Safe-Lists-Only junk email filter and appearing in my Inbox in Outlook 2013 (Click-and-Run Office OEM installation on a new Lenovo W530, no Exchange or other server, just a
stand-alone POP3-email-only installation on a single computer under Windows 7 SP1). These senders are not in my Contacts, Safe Senders, or Safe Recipients lists. Below is the header from the most recent example [with my e-mail address edited out].
(More can be found in the above-quoted thread.)
Further, although right-click/Junk/Block Sender does move these messages to the Junk folder, it does **not** add their addresses to the Blocked Senders list.
On the other hand, legitimate e-mail from senders not yet in my Contacts **do** get routed to the Junk folder, until I mark them as Not Junk, as they should. Thus the filter basically appears to be working.
I have Microsoft Updates set to Automatic, I have MSE installed and up to date, and I occasionally do a deep scan with both MSE and MalwareBytes, but no malware has been found. It appears that some of the "bad guys" have figured out a way
to kid Outlook 2013 into thinking that their messages are on one of my Safe Lists. Has anybody else seen this behavior? Any suggestions how to fix it? -- JCW2

I actually read another thread from you in this link below...
It's recommended to download and install
Configuration Analyzer Tool (OffCAT), which is developed by Microsoft Support teams. Once the tool is installed, you can run it at any time to scan for hundreds of known issues in Office
programs.
Melon Chen -- Thanks for taking an interest in my problem. It's early to be sure yet, but the change that you suggest was made yesterday, as indicated in that other thread you mentioned, and does seem to be helping:
1) Checking my short list of previous illegitimate spam messages (that went to my Inbox), I see that they are all from one of my non-default accounts for which the Junk options turned out not to have been configured.
2) Having configured all my accounts to "Safe Lists Only," I received one more similar message this morning that DID go into the Junk folder! Maybe this was indeed the problem.
3) I haven't tried OffCAT yet, but I will read about it... -- JCW2 -
Is there an email account setting somewhere on my iPod touch 5th gen where I can reset the number of unopened emails in the inbox to zero? This worked fine until I installed iOS7, and still does on the other devices (Blackberry, windows 8 PC/Outlook 2010) And it only does this on the occasional email and not in all accounts. I won't repeatedly delete/reinstall the accounts as suggested elsewhere. Thanks.

Why does my alarm occasionally fail to vibrate and make sound?
I use my alarm on my iPhone 5 every day to wake up. I would say that 99.9% of the time it works.
Maybe once every few months, however, the alarm fails to go off. The phone will show the appropriately display (I use snooze, so the snooze button is ready to be pressed). When I last experienced this problem I shut the phone off and turned it back on, and the alarm triggered (noise and vibration) as soon as the phone turned on.
This isn't a case of me hitting snooze or disabling the alarm by mistake. It's not a case of a 3rd party app trying to do something with the alarm. It's not a case of using an outdated OS because I'm currently on the latest (and this has happened on other OS versions, anyway, and happened on my 3GS a few times, too). Even though it doesn't matter (because I have kept it on the same settings since I bought the phone when it came out), my phone is always on silent. So that isn't the culprit either, because alarm works just fine on silent.
This is a major problem even though it is rare. I use this phone to wake up for work. If you google it you'll see others experience the same problem (but I couldn't find a solution).
-Do others experience this problem on here?
-Has Apple said anything about it or at least acknowledged it is an issue?
-How do I get Apple to acknowledge my concerns?
If this keeps happen, even infrequently, my next phone is an Android.Exactly the same problem.
Been late from work several times because the alarm goes silent.
Then when you wake up and check it, there's no ringtones, no alarms, no alerts, no message sounds, nothing from the apps, no keyboard sounds, absolutely nothing coming out of the speaker.
Yes, the mute switch is off. Yes, the volume is on. No, there's no dirt or dust in the headphone plug. I have never once even used the Do not disturb function.
Only rebooting helps.
This happens every once in a while for no apparent reason.
The thing that really disturbs me that this is my THIRD (3rd) iPhone in a row that has the same problem. Since that's the case, I've been very hard trying to figure out - and hoping - that the problem is something that I keep doing. I just don't know what it is.
Been using Nightstand app. Removed it now completely. That probably won't help either.
Had my previous iPhone5 changed to a new one exactly 10 days ago for this very reason, and here we go again - the same bug is here. Not funny.
I have been reading discussion boards a lot and it seems that this is a fairly common problem. However, nobody has come up with a solution.
If someone figures that out, he/she's gonna make a lot of customers happy. -
Bug (reported to Apple) - Slide to unlock occasionally fails!
Hello folks,
Below is a copy of my bug report, I just missed an urgent call (with no call back number)... so I was prompted to finally report this problem!
Has anyone experienced this (I noticed some similar reports but none that exactly match my description).
NOTE: Please do not suggest that I turn off the "Slide to unlock" feature. I need to engage it, otherwise I will lose access to my corporate email.
Report----------------
Phone: iPhone 4
iOS: 4.3 (8F190)
I am experiencing a problem with the Slide to Unlock feature.
It is an inconsistent problem which is hard to repeat intentionally. However, it seems to occur randomly, about every 1 in 15 calls.
I believe the conditions related to the problem are as follows:
- Phone enters Auto-Lock mode (5 minutes)
Password Lock is engaged
- Screen off (phone not in use for more than 5 minutes)
Problem description:
When I receive phone call, I attempt to slide the "Slide to unlock" slider to the right. The slider does move to the right as intended, however, it has no affect on displaying the keypad.
The expected result should be the numeric keypad so that I can enter my keycode. As previously mention, these actions to answer a call do work more than 90% of time.
Additionally, pressing the Home button or the power button also has no affect while the phone is still ringing.
Only after the ringing has stopped do I regain control of the phone.
Note: This is not a new problem with iOS: 4.3 (8F190), rather, this did begin with the last iOS version.Mine did it too, I would swipe the slide to unlock and the first attempt
failed usually 50% of time. I've since reactivated my old Nokia N95 until
we see what the next gen iPhone holds for us. My iPhone 4 was nothing
but trouble.
Despite this problem (which occurs rarely) and a few other idiosyncrasies, I can't agree with your statement. Since upgrading from the Android platform, the iPhone 4 is (by far) the very best phone I have ever owned!
It is hard to feel sorry for all those Android 'suckers' out there still complaining and hating their service providers for not releasing the latest aOS fixes. Complaining about bugs that will likely never get fixed...that is unless they upgrade to new Android hardware. Android... NEVER AGAIN!
BTW, I am no fanboy... I am just pleased with the iPhone user experience! -
K9VGM - network adapter occasionally failing
Hi friends,
I have a new computer based on a K9VGM board. Everything is running fine until after some random number of hours - between 6 - 80 hours, when the network adapter (on the motherboard) suddenly fails. It may have to do with the network load, but it doesn't seem to be related to the temperature in the room.
When it fails, everything else on the machine is running fine, except for the network adapter. I can't control it all from inside windows, any "disable" or "repair" on the network connection or network adapter fails, and the window just sits there. It seems like the OS can't communicate with this piece of hardware at all. After a reboot the computer runs fine again, until it happens the next time.
This is actually my second K9VGM motherboard in this machine - I returned the first one to the reseller, with this error. They supposedly tested it, and confirmed the problem, and sent me a new one - which has the same problem...
All drivers and updates should be applied, according to the MSI live update tool.
Any tips on ho wto proceed? I am not so keen on sending it back again, to receive another MB with the same issue. I am tempted to just buy a cheap NIC PCI card and put in the box...I have held off on doing anything on this - and now the machine has actually been running without any network problems for more than a week - so maybe it was just the previous board that was faulty, and the new one had a temporary hiccup (not reoccuring problems).

Macbook pro occasionally fails to connect to the internet
Hi... A few months ago I bought a new 15 inch Retina display MacBook Pro. it's the third macbook pro I've owned but the first with the following problem. About 5% of the time, when I boot the computer it fails to connect to my home network. While this is happening I will click on Network Diagnostics. I will, one at a time, walk through the following screens of that diagnostic tool..
Select Location... Always shows my Location so I click Continue
Choose network port configuration... That always shows the correct Wi-Fi radio button selected so I again click Continue
Select Wi-Fi Network... It always shows my home network so again I just click Continue
Then comes the interesting part. The next screen that comes up is the one where you choose between DHCP or PPPoE. The moment that screen comes up, first DHCP is already selected which is correct. But more importantly the moment that screen comes up, the network connects and a new window opens up that says,
Network Change Detected.
Your network configuration has changed. Click OK to proceed to the next step
What could be wrong that prompts the system to fail to connect once in a while even though it seems to only need me to click through the Network Diagnostic without actually doing anything and when I get to this DHCP screen, boom it connects by itself???
Any ideas of what's going on???
thanks... bob...1. Power off the router. Unplug it from the wall. Wait a while.
Plug it back to the wall. Power the router on. Wait until all the lights are lit properly. It will take a while.
Restart the computer.
Start up in Safe Mode.

Under "Select Protocol", uncheck any box if selected.
Click "OK" then "Apply”. -
[SOLVED] Almost-new battery occasionally fails to charge
Sometimes my three-month-old Vizio CT14-A4 fails to charge and misreports charge level. Specifically, my adapter LED blinks, acpi gives
Battery 0: Unknown, 98%
and then the battery proceeds to last for, say, one hour when I expect four. I know the battery isn't dying because usually it does hold and dispense a full charge (and it's quite new). I haven't figured out how to reproduce the problem yet, but it's happened a few times this month. Removing and putting back in the charger plug doesn't help. My naive gut guess is the battery is somehow overcharging when the laptop spends too long plugged in. I'm looking for a solution that does not involve removing the battery (which I haven't tried yet but will at next opportunity, for troubleshooting's sake).
Here's my current acpi -V, now that I've plugged in following a complete discharge and all is normal:
Battery 0: Charging, 58%, 00:53:40 until charged
Battery 0: design capacity 6970 mAh, last full capacity 6949 mAh = 99%
Adapter 0: on-line
Thermal 0: ok, 56.0 degrees C
Thermal 0: trip point 0 switches to mode critical at temperature 100.0 degrees C
Thermal 0: trip point 1 switches to mode passive at temperature 110.0 degrees C
Thermal 0: trip point 2 switches to mode active at temperature 60.0 degrees C
Cooling 0: x86_pkg_temp no state information available
Cooling 1: LCD 4 of 10
Cooling 2: Fan 1 of 1
Cooling 3: intel_powerclamp no state information available
Cooling 4: Processor 0 of 3
Cooling 5: Processor 0 of 3
Cooling 6: Processor 0 of 3
Cooling 7: Processor 0 of 3
For reference, this issue resembles old threads. Any suggestions?
Edit: Looks like it was a battery problem, not a Linux problem. When I called the manufacturer they immediately told me to hard-reset the battery with a paper clip, which worked (though I have to do it again every month or so). Marking solved.
Last edited by chikinn (2015-05-25 17:16:06)It's fairly common for the pre-MacSafe power connectors on the computer to loosen due to stress. The points where the barrel-shaped chrome connector assemble is soldered (or flowed) to the logic board lose contact and you get intermittent charing at best.
If you connect to A/C adaptor and gently wiggle it up and down, can y ousee charging start again/ "Up" is the position where the contact should again meet.
My 1Ghz 17" MBP will not start on A/C alone until the battery has a little charge. I don't know it's the dead internal backup battery (common) of something else that causes two good 65W power supplies to report in Profiler as 45W. -
Every so often TM reports that 'back up failed'. If I then manually enter TM to back up it's fine. Any ideas as to why this happens?
ThxThere is a rile in that folder named com.apple.timemachine.supported that is reported as an empty file. If you did not see it listed, then it may be invisible. You can make invisible files visible by doing the following:
Enable Finder to Show Invisible Files and Folders
Open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder. At the prompt enter or paste the following command line then press RETURN.
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE
To turn off the display of invisible files and folders enter or paste the following command line and press RETURN.
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles FALSE
Alternatively you can use one of the numerous third-party utilities such as TinkerTool or ShowHideInvisibleFiles - VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
Once you have toggled the Finder to show invisible files look in the folder for the above file. Drag it to the Trash. Turn off the display of invisible files.
Now start a TM backup. See if this fixes the problem. -
Resume from suspend occasionally fails.
Sometimes when I resume after suspending to RAM, all that shows up is a blank screen with a single underscore at the top left. There is no mouse cursor and the system is completely unresponsive. It only happens occasionally (maybe 1/4).
I have not found any related messages in the logs. Memtest completes successfully too. Does anyone have any idea of what might cause this?
It's like the system is playing Russian roulette with itself whenever I resume.
Last edited by Xyne (2013-02-06 11:54:41)This happens to me 100% of the time with 3.11.6 and 3.10.17, resuming from suspend results in naught but an underscore top left. VT switching appears to work temporarily, I was able to enter in my user name in the VT, but then everything hung on pressing enter. Not sure about earlier kernel versions because this is a fresh install on this hardware. Happens with and without X.
Hibernate results in an underscore before the computer is able to shut down. I tried using pm_trace and dumping logs before/after as recommended around the internet, pm_trace didn't match any hashes & there are no logs after suspend that get written out as far as I can tell. The computer is also unresponsive to the network. I also tried using pm_debug but I wasn't really sure what I was doing, running the core test I thought shouldn't cause the computer to actually suspend, but it did & there was my underscore again in all its glory.
Wish I knew a way to get some more information.. -
IMac occasionally fails to wake from sleep mode
This is a transient problem. Happens every 2-3 days that computer fails to wake up from sleep mode. Space bar doesn't do anything and I finally have to unplug it and reboot. I have a late 2008 iMac and am running Lion. It has started doing this after I installed Lion but doesn't seem to be related.
It's tough to troubleshoot intermittent problems. You can try by restarting in Safe Mode, this will clear some caches. It's possible one or more is corrupt.

Win 7 Pro 64 occasionally fails to connect using IKEV2 to Win2008R2 Routing and Remote Access server
I'm a networking guy and having this troubling VPM issue that I can't find.
I have a number of VPN connections from my Win7Pro 64 PC to various customers. Their end points are all Windows Routing and Remote Access on Windows 2008R2 STD servers.
Every once and a while I will hang at Verifying User ID and Password and eventually get ERROR 809. Change the security type on my VPN connection from IKEV2 to PPTP - never an issue, connects in right away.
I can also try from another PC (at the same or alternate location) to get into that same server using the same credentials and access - no issue using either IKEV2 or PPTP.
This has happened at various times to various customers. Here is what I know it is not:
- Not the local or remote routers or Firewalls since I can always get in from other PC's going through the same network. Even so, tried rebooting all several times
- Not an ISP issue at either end since I can always get into other IKEV2 servers from the same PC and from other PC's to the server I can't from my PC.
This leads to the only logical conclusion. It is something to do with my Win7Pro 64 PC but for the life of my I can not find it.
I have obviously tried rebooting the Win7Pro PC. I have also tried recreating the VPN connection several times. Nothing.
Help!Hi,
I know that you've mentioned that it is not a issue about firewall or router settings, but this error usually comes when some firewall between client and server is blocking the ports used by VPN tunnel.
so to allow IKEv2 traffic, please make sure to configure the network firewall to open UDP ports 500 and 4500, and to allow IP protocol 50.
If that is not possible, deploy SSTP based VPN tunnel on both VPN server and VPN client – that allows VPN connection across firewalls, web proxies and NAT
You can refer to this blog
