Netflix Silverlight update OS 10.4.11

So, I'm trying to watch Netflix Watch It Now and the site keeps telling me that I need to update my version of Silverlight. The funny part is that the newest update for Silverlight (5.0) only runs on OS 10.5 or higher. Does this mean I can't watch Netflix anymore? I've tried this on both Safari (4.1.3) and Firefox (3.6.2)
I'm using OS 10.4.11 Tiger... Any ideas?
Hardware Overview:
  Model Name:          iMac
  Model Identifier:          iMac4,1
  Processor Name:          Intel Core Duo
  Processor Speed:          1.83 GHz
  Number Of Processors:          1
  Total Number Of Cores:          2
L2 Cache (per processor):          2 MB
  Memory:          2 GB

Yeah, if Netflix isn't working for you any more on Tiger with the version of Silverlight you hace, it's time to upgrade the OS.
OS X 10.5 Leopard is not cheap either through Apple or third party.
Apple may still have OS X 10.5, but you'll pay their original price of $129.
You can obtain OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard for $19.99 and upgrade your iMac to this version and then update your Microsoft Silverlight to the version that works with 10.6.8.
With only 2 GBs of RAM, I am,not sure how well OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard will run on your iMac.
Call Apple at 1-800-MYAPPLE and ask for software sales.
If you want to just upgrade to OS X 10.5, tell them you have an older iMac and just purchased an iPad and the iPad needs, at least OS X 10.5 for iTunes. They maybe able to scrounge up a disc to sell you.
I will be a lot more expensive, though.
The decision is up to you.
Good Luck!

  • After silverlight update laptop acts as if shift key held down

After silverlight update laptop acts as if shift key held down, i.e. all caps, no numbers, it means I can't input passwords or open folders or select single items. Called Apple Help and they walked me through reinstlling OS from disk and it helped for about 12 hours. Now it shuffles between this ALLCAPS version and regular mode and won't allow me to reinstall anything. Any ideas? Thanks!

    HI tjk,
Thanks for replying! I didn't do anything else during the 12 hours of normal use--the Silverlight update followed one of those automated updates that caused Netflix streaming to stop working. I haven't re-callled Apple Support because when I initially described the problem to the tech, he said to do the reinstall and if that didn't work I should bring the laptop in to one of the stores and see what they could do there. If the problem continues, will have to do that this weekend, I guess. . .

Ok, that like means the AppleCare representative thinks there may be a hardware issue. One other thing you can try is an SMC Reset: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964

  • Any fix for Netflix (Silverlight)?

I've searched all over the place and can't find any solution to this problem, so I'm asking here in the hope that someone else has encountered it.
The problem:   Netflix is choppy to the point of being unusable if the computer is busy.  But it's not because of the computer (see below).  It appears to be I/O related.
    Things I've tried:
Different browsers.  Firefox, Safari, and Chrome all have the same problem.
I've reinstalled Silverlight several times.  It doesn't help.
I've rebooted, logged out and back in, logged in as a different user, and so forth.  It doesn't matter.
Changing the quality setting on Netflix doesn't matter.  I've tried on every setting from the highest to the lowest, and it doesn't matter.
Watching full screen or windowed doesn't make any difference.  I can resize the window as small as possible, the problem still exists.
I've doubled the amount of memory in the machine.  It didn't help.  The computer is an 8-core Mac Pro (2008), with 16 GB of memory and NVidia 8800GT graphics.
I've tried enabling and disabling hardware acceleration.  It doesn't seem to matter.
All other audio/video applications (including iTunes) play perfectly, whether playing a local file or streaming.  It is only Netflix / Silverlight that has the problem.
I believe it to be triggered by I/O, because if the machine isn't very busy, I can watch Netflix just fine.  Large file copies or DVD reads will cause the problem.  I might normally think this is just a machine limitation, but with 8 cores and 16 GB of memory, I really don't think that's the problem.   I really think it is a Silverlight / Netflix problem.
And here's the real kicker.  Under the same load that causes Netflix to be unwatchable, I can fire up a virtual machine running Windows (thereby *increasing* system load), run a copy of Google in the virtual machine, and Netflix will play perfectly in it.   So I really don't think it's a problem with the machine's capabilities.
Is there any kind of setting I can check, or a preference that I can change to resolve the problem?  I hate to have a whole virtual machine running just to run Netflix when I already have a native player available.

There seems to be little to no stuttering for me now, but I'm not sure what changed. I cleared the Sliverlight application storage for Netflix, and that seems to be the last thing I did before it stopped stuttering, but I cannot confirm that nothing else changed on my computer. Here's what I did:
Open up a movie or tv show on netflix, and control click or right click anywhere in the window and click Silverlight Preferences.
Go to the Application Storage tab and delete the application storage for Netflix. For good measure you might want to log out and log back in to make sure that Sliverlight doesn't keep anything cached. Just a heads up: after doing this the volume for the Netflix player will go back to 100%.

  • How do I stop the annoying silverlight update notices?

How do I stop the annoying silverlight update notices?

hello, enter "about:config" into the location-bar of the browser, confirm the info dialog, then search for the preference named "plugins.hide_infobar_for_outdated_plugin" & double-click it in order to toggle it to "true".
please note that firefox also won't support the ppc architecture any longer, however if you want to use an up-to-date browser based on firefox you can switch to "tenfourfox" , the downside would be: it doesn't support plugins at all - [[Firefox no longer works with Mac OS X 10.4 or PowerPC processors]]

  • 10/21/2010 Update - Netflix/Silverlight no longer work on 2008 Mac Pro

After performing the latest update tonight I can no longer watch video "instantly" (streaming) from Netflix.
After manually trashing and installing the latest Microsoft Silverlight internet plugin, Netflix thinks it is an O/S issue.
This is the error message I get:
    Instant Watching System Compatibility
    Watching instantly on your computer
Our apologies — streaming is not supported for your operating system.
Note that your current Internet browser is fully compatible with adding titles to the Instant Queue for later watching on compatible devices.
    Complete System Requirements
To watch instantly, you'll need a computer that meets the following minimum requirements:
    Windows
Windows XP with Service Pack 2, Vista or Windows 7
Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher; or Firefox 2 or higher
    1.2 GHz processor
    512 MB RAM
    Mac
An Intel-based Mac with OS 10.4.8 or later
Safari 3 or higher; or Firefox 2 or higher
    1 GB RAM
Of course my Mac Pro 2008 Eight Core exceeds these requirements (10GB memory for example)
    Any suggestions?

I assume the update you refer to is Java.
Does it happen with Firefox 3.6.11? Safari 5.02?
Did you make a fully bootable clone first?
It is not uncommon for OS X security updates to break something.
I'd actually post and look in "Using Snow Leopard" forum.

  • Netflix error despite Silverlight update and correct browser settings?

I've got an older MacBook Pro (OS 10.5.8), and just tried to join Netflix but can't get Silverlight to work (I keep getting error N8010).  I've reinstalled the most recent iteration of Silverlight (Netflix also won't let me run on the old Silverlight) and checked browser settings on Firefox, Safari, and Chrome.  Are there some other settings I should be checking?  Thanks!

Thanks for info, ds store. Wish I'd known about Chrome, however. I should have, knowing already how intrusive they are (just check gmail on that count. They want to know everything!).
I have to say also that I don't understand why Apple can't update Safari for all it's recent platforms instead of just for one, whichever is latest. Doing that leaves customers who don't want or need to update platforms high and dry with respect to Apple's own browser. I could run IE8 with Windows 98 if I had to. As it is, I run it with XP, by now several generations old. So one for Microsoft and zip for Apple on that count.
    ds store wrote:
I don't recommend Chrome as they install a root level updater that requires removing all their software and the updater to get rid of it, Firefox would be the better choice.
Having installed Chrome, as you know, can you tell me whether or not Mac Keeper would do the job of removal? I have that too, and they sort of lay claim to being able to remove all pieces of programs/apps in one easy move. Course I'm skeptical. Assuming "no" for an answer, is there someplace I can look at that gives step-by-step instructions on how thoroughly to be rid of Chrome? I also gather that simply dropping the App in the Trash won't work either, at least not to be thoroughly rid of any app really?

  • Silverlight update -stuck in Netflix loop hell

I'm using the most recent updates of both Firefox and silver light (as at 28 September) but seem to be stuck in a permanent loop when trying to play movies on Netflix.
In netflix, movies won't start due to error 2130, relating to silver light. Only option given is to close browser, uninstall silver light and then try again.
I have uninstalled both Firefox and silver light several times each, restarted the PC several times and still getting the same loop...
    Anyone got a fix?
Was all working fine before updating Firefox to latest version (two days ago)
    Thanks!

Hey have you tried to deactivate the device you are seeing this error on? [http://aiscer.wordpress.com/2011/01/09/netflix-player-error-error-code-2103/] Is it the only device with this issue?

  • Macbook Air and Netflix Silverlight

I have purchased the new Macbook Air 13", returned it due to excessive fan noise and exchanged for a second Macbook Air 13". The product itself is stunning. It's light, sexy, powerful and I like the OS. However, playing a movie on Netflix with the Silverlight app kicks the CPU to 120% plus and runs the fans to at least 5,000 RPMs and up to 6496 RPMs. Then, this chews through the battery life. A SMC reboot doesn't work - tried it. Literally, every other app is quiet, with an exception of maybe a Chrome Render pulling 5-10% of CPU power. Unfortunately I will now make a 4th trip to Apple and it will be to turn this one in. Such a shame. Last call. Any ideas?

Except for one fact.  Some machines dissipate heat easier than others depending on their surface.  I would not for instance put one of these hot machines on bed linen.  A wooden or metal desk is a much better surface. A simple notebook stand can cost as little as $20 if you shop around.    And the 120 degrees is not the max.  The max is on http://www.apple.com/macbookair/specs.html are:
    Line voltage: 100-240V AC
    Frequency: 50Hz to 60Hz
    Operating temperature: 50° to 95° F (10° to 35° C)
    Storage temperature: -13° to 113° F (-24° to 45° C)
Relative humidity: 0% to 90% noncondensing
    Maximum operating altitude: 10,000 feet
    Maximum storage altitude: 15,000 feet
    Maximum shipping altitude: 35,000 feet
Airplane cabin pressure typically is normal for 9000 feet, which is why it is safe to use in flight. Temperatures above are ambient external to computer temperatures.
SMC FanControl has recently been found to be 10.7 incompatible and cause more issues for computers that have been updated or new machines than using without that software. If you are experiencing other overheating symptoms such as unexpected kernel panics, or un-force quitable applications (command-option-escape is the command to force an application to quit via the Force Quit menu), or unprogrammed shut downs (either by Energy Saver or power button, or Apple menu -> Shut Down) only then would I worry about overheating.  Now if your ambient temperature humidity is normal, and the fan is just noisy, get a pair of headphones to block the noise.
This is a user to user forum, and all we can do is suggest remedial actions to take. The fact you had 4 replacements and it didn't perform as expected says either the environment is hostile for it, or your expectations are excessive.

  • Silverlight Update - Identity Cannot Be Confirmed

Hi.  I just tried to stream a Netflix movie to my Mac (normally I watch them on the TV).  Netflix asked me to update Silverlight.  I clicked the link to download from them.  When I tried to install it, though, it failed saying the identity of the developer could not be confirmed.  I downloaded it directly from Microsoft, and the same thing occurred.  I turned all extensions off before attempting the installation.
(Exact wording of the warning:  "Silverlight.pkg" can't be opened because the identity of the developer cannot be confirmed.  "Silverlight.pkg" is on the disk image "Silverlight.dmg".  Safari downloaded this disk image today at 6:05 PM from download.microsoft.com.
Is there a way around this?

Is there a way around this?
Technology experts are working on a movie storage system where YOU have physical possession of the movie.
This system stores the movie digitally on an optical disk system that will not be dependent upon a congested, complicated, and fragile network.  Because all of the data is stored only a few feet from your television, all the bottlenecks are removed.  Performance and reliability are virtually flawless.
Further, the system will not utilize any form of security codes, authentications, or passwords. Once the optical disc is purchased it can be moved around freely at will, and can even be lent or given to friends and neighbors with zero hassles.
And if you don't like the movie, you can sell it for close to your purchase price!
In the meantime, repair permissions on your Mac and restart.

  • Adobe Flash 14 and Silverlight Update install, but do not work

I can not watch videos on you tube because it says I need to update the adbe flash on my brand new iMac, same thing with silverlight when I try to watch a show on Netflix. I have downloaded and installed the new versions, but when I try to watch anything it says I need to update still. Whats going on?

Make sure that your Safari plugins are activated. Safari menu - Preferences - Security. It's just next to the checkbox which activates Java.

  • AppleTv2:  HDCP suddenly not working on netflix after update

I have had a working AppleTV2 for about a year and have been using netflix to stream movies.  After most recent update I can no longer stream due to HDCP error.  There are been no changes to the hardware (cables, TV, power, etc.)  This can only point to the update.  I tried to do a restore from Mac to the most recent update.  I took it into the genius bar and they tried to do the same thing.  No change, they only offer the $69 Service replacement.  I have tried changing the outputs, the hdmi cable and powering up in a certain manner.  None of these work?  Why is this suddenly not working?
    Thanks for any help.

Interesting (albeit, odd) addition to this issue --
on my work system (dual G5, decked out, 23" Cinema), the same issue started to happen after the QT upgrade... however in my situation, the movie would load, but then just sit there, frozen.
The first time I saw this, I started to move my mouse across the web page, and noticed that every time the pointer would roll over a URL link or any other rollover type of object within the browser window (e.g., a link or even a tab or bookmark shortcut in the Safari toolbar) the movie would suddenly start and stop, but just for a fraction of a second. But yet, if I just leave my mouse sitting on top of the URL or rollover object, it does nothing. It appears to be directly related to the action of roll-on or roll-out from other objects on the page, or within the overall window.
So basically, if I take my mouse and move it ridiculously fast back and forth over any one of these rollover items, the movie will play for a fraction of a second each time the pointer passes over the object and makes it highlight... something to the effect of watching a flip-book animation that stutters along.
Very bizarre -- not sure what happened with the update, but hoping that there is a patch released soon. It would appear that it's conflicting with other objects within the window, or it's waiting for some action on another rollover-type of item that is loaded within the overall window.

  • Problem with netflix after update!

Since I update my Apple TV my netflix became useless. Every time that I try to watch something it starts very well but suddenly the video start from the beginning again and the audio continues normally. Any sugestions?

I am eperiencing the same problem but with a second Apple Cinema Display. The Netflix buttons in Safari will not respond to left mouse clicks on any monitor that is not the Main monitor (the one with the menu bar). If I open Firefox it will work as expected on any monitor. But Safari no longer responds.
    No fix yet.

  • Netflix Silverlight not working in Chrome?

I just got a MacBook Pro and I have never had a Mac before. I want to watch Netlix but it told me to download Silverlight which I did. I then restarted Chrome and it still said I hadn't downloaded it but it was there in the downloads section of the computer. Am I doing something wrong? I am still new to this software so I am not sure what to do. Help please. Step by step would be appreciated I am so confused and upset.

On your Dock near the Trash Can is a folder called Downloads,  click on it and open it and the Silverlight installer will be there or it mounts a DMG volume on the Desktop that looks like a drive.
Click on it to open and it should open and it if doesn't then hold the option/alt key, click on the installer and select "Open" and allow it to bypass Gatekeeper.
Install Silverlight and if it asks for your Admin Password, then give it.
You have to maintain Silverlight, it's not auto-updated like Flash is done for you by Google.
Silverlight is a Microsoft product, why Google doesn't deal with them about maintaining it.
You visit this page sometimes and make sure your Silverlight is updated.

  • HBO in perpetual buffering after silverlight update

Hi all.  I suddenly find myself unable to watch videos on HBO Go when I have watched 8 episodes in the past week with no problem. There are only two things that have changed from my last viewing to the one I am attempting: 1) I updated to the latest version of Skype three days ago; and 2) on the same day I also installed a plug-in for Silverlight (in order to watch an NBC Sports broadcast). I have uninstalled and re-installed Microsoft Silverlight to no avail.  I have tried using the HBO Go player in Google Chrome and in Firefox as well as Safari (where I originally viewed eight eps).  When the video tries to load it just says buffering and doesn't move on from that.  I can see the play/pause button in Google Chrome (but not in Safari) but the timecode is 0:00 to 0:00 anyhow.  As it loads, it says 53 of 55 components installed (or sometimes another figure, but always two shy of what it seems to want to load) and 'with 1 error.' Has anyone had similar problems? This is driving me crazy!

Just posting here in case this helps anyone: I managed to resolve the issue by downloading the Flash uninstaller and removing Flash and then reinstalling.  I also removed Silverlight completely for the time being.  It seems the two were at odds with each other, even after removing Silverlight -- perhaps Flash was corrupted/disturbed by the Silverlight plug-in.  The player is now running just fine on Safari.
