Netflix streaming affects network ping

I know that it sounds crazy, and I've been trying to fix it, but when I stream from netflix (HD content only) the ping times of my network will jump to about 600-900ms (from 40-ish ms) every 10 seconds.  Very goofy!   I've tried doing the same thing from my blu ray player,  PS3, iPad, iPods, and a couple of laptops.   No problem,  BUT when I use the Apple TV (1080p version) this is even over Ethernet and not Wifi.  I have another AppleTV (720p version) that is over WiFi and it affects the ping times too.  Everything is ok, but these screwy ping times make certain online games challenging or unplayable.   The second that you pause or stop the stream ... boom, fixed.
So, only NETFLIX, and only HD content.   This doesn't occur on my home media center, or with HULU, or streaming from iTunes.   WHAT????  Any ideas?
Here is the output from a ping test:
64 bytes from 8.8.8.8: icmp_seq=185 ttl=46 time=676.227 ms

Ok, I tried everything to fix this, and eventually we bought a new router with Adaptive QOS.   FIXED!   Seems that something on my old router's QOS just wasn't working properly.
Happy streaming!!

  • Netflix Streaming quality degraded over last few months in Plano, Tx?

The last couple of months I've been getting horrible connections in Netflix streaming to my Xbox360. Prior to that I would always get a 5 bar connection, but over the past couple of months I've been luck to get 3 bars. Many times the stream will stutter out and not be able to continue playing, causing a reconnection and really interrupting the viewing. I haven't changed anything in my setup and I have my Xbox360 hard wired to my router, so I have no idea what could be going wrong. I have the 25/15 service, but all the speed tests I've done have not gotten any higher than 14/14, and often are more like 8/10. Is there anything going on with Verizon's connections in TX?

To summarize Verizon's statement: paying Verizon customers are demanding lots of data from Cogent (i.e. streaming lots of Netflix movies). This is requiring Cogent to pump a large volume of traffic to Verizon's network because paying Verizon customers are requesting it.
In turn Verizon is now demanding more cash from Cogent because Verizon paying customers are requesting that traffic. The end result is Verizon looking to make more cash off of their own customers' activities and/or using it as an excuse to quietly degrade the Netflix experience (but hey, they conveinently have their own Redbox Instant streaming service that I'm sure they would love you to subscribe to. It probably doesn't suffer from this problem either).
    In reality, Verizon should:
    1) Realize that this is on them and they are not providing the quality level of service that their customers are paying for.
    2) Join Netflix's (free) Open Connect. This would both significantly reduce the congestion AND provide even higher quality Netflix service. (Hint: Your paying customers would love you if you did this, Verizon)

  • FIOS Quantum- Netflix Streaming Issues

Setup: Actiontec Rev I Router: 50 foot Cat5 cable to Roku XDS device. Speed test always indicates 50MBS download speed.
Netflix streaming has always worked but quality level varies and rebuffering and downgrading usually occurs. I'm often able to start out with 4 dots (highest streaming rate and quality) but often rebuffer and downgrade to 3 or 2 dots. With Roku set to debug, the stream speed is dropping when this occurs.
Amazon seems fine or, at least, much better.
I assigned the Static DNS address recommended by Roku. No help.
    Any ideas?

If you're have issues this evening, it's probably due to reasons like below. I'm impressed with how high the latency is at the last ALTER.NET hop given that it's within Verizon's network.

  • Netflix streaming has become frustrating

Netflix streaming has become frustrating as it constantly stops to load. I have a Time Machine 802.11n 4th generation within site of my Mac and Sony television. Modem is 2 years old and operates fine as I had my ISP run a check on it. I have done all resets per troubleshooting sites, and all is wireless. My current download speed is 28.28 Mbps and upload is 5.81 Mbps per Xfinity. Any suggestions or items I should check on?

Netflix operates with very little bandwidth, about 4Mbps as I understand it.. so 28Mbps download should be fine.
Is anything else using the bandwidth??
Bypass the TC and use ethernet direct to the modem and check that it works fine.
I presume you are using wireless to download?
Your TV might be too far away from the TC or might get poor signal due to walls or interference.
Try placing the TC closer.. try setting manual channels and test on 11, 8, 6, 1 in that order.
Make sure nothing else is using the wireless network when you are trying the netflix.

  • How can I get netflix streaming audio, the video is fine but the audio coming through is from the TV(dish)

how can I get netflix streaming audio, the video is fine but the audio coming through is from the TV(dish)

It's exactly as I stated. Whenever I try to drag these kinds of loops (ESX24 / software instrument loops? the ones marked in green with the white music note next to them) from the loop browser into the timeline a message comes up saying Audio Not Found for that loop.  And a new track is created automatically when loops are dragged into the timeline, so I'm not creating some other random / synth instrument track so I'm not sure  what the deal is... But perhaps I'll try creating a software instrument track first and then drag the loop into that track and see what happens - maybe there's something with the default settings that automatically creates audio tracks whenever loops are imported?

  • I have an early apple tv. Will it support netflix streaming? Also what is the size of the newest apple tv's hard drive? And, will my current apple tv be able to use the icloud services?

I have an early apple tv. Will it support netflix streaming? Netflix does not show on the internet tab on the AppleTV display.
Will my current appletv connect to icloud services, synch, etc.?
Also, what is the size of the current appleTV's hard drive?

    1. No to NetFlix and ATV1
    2. If you mean your ATV1, no.
    3. If you mean your ATV1, there are more than one hard drive size.  If you mean the new ATV2, it doesn't have a hard drive.

  • Why would Lightroom video capabilities/iTunes import/Netflix streaming/Photoshop all stop working at once?

    Hi forum --
Several programs all stopped working at the same time and will only work (briefly) right after I've restarted my computer including:
    - iTunes audio cd importing
    - Lightroom video importing and playback
Netflix streaming (on both Safari and Chrome) won't work and Photoshop (CS4) won't open at all.
Videos work without a problem in: Quicktime, iMovie, Final Cut Pro, and Bridge CS4 and CS6.  YouTube also works without a problem.
Maybe the problems are conincidence, but this seems like it is posisbly a software problem with my computer, not my programs.
I have tried reinstalling Ligthroom and resetting the preferences files but they don't help.
The only things that I can think of that happened is that I:
    1. downloaded my own videos from my own YouTube acocunt after my external hard drive failed and maybe there was a virus?
    2. I deleted some programs with "Clean My Mac 2" and maybe it deleted some crucial file someplace?
I am running a 2009 13" MacBook Pro with a 2.53 Ghz processor and 4 GB RAM and Mountain Lion (everything is up to date).
    Thank you for any suggestions!

I had problems with streaming until I changed the WiFi channel that I was using.  The original one conflicted with my neighbor.  After that, MOST of my streaming problems vanished.  Occasionally, a movie would pause for more buffering and I eventually ran an ethernet cable from the Apple TV to my Apple Extreme (to eliminate the Wifi).  I have not had a single problem since then (except to repair the drywall after running the ethernet from one floor to another).  :-)

  • Netflix netflix streaming from iPad to hgtv using VGA cord not working on TV.  It's fine on the iPad but an error message says to turn off mirroring in airplay.  Don't know what to do.

Netflix streaming from iPad to hgtv via VGA cable not working.  Message says to turn off mirroring in airplay, but I don't know what that is or how to turn it off.  Any help?

Try resetting the iPad (hold the home and power buttons down until the Apple logo appears).

  • I get choppy video on netflix streaming online

how can i fix choppy video on netflix streaming online

What version Mini do you have?  How much RAM?
What is your internet connection and speed?
Not knowing that, first I would say insure that you have
the latest version of Microsoft Silverlight installed.  Next,
do you have any other apps running at the same time?
Which browser are you using?  Also, is this all the time
    or occasionallly?
I have a 2010 Mini (Mountain Lion installed) that I use as an
HTPC.  Most of the time, I have no real issues with the video
from Netflix.  There are occasions when video is pretty choopy.
However, I can view the same program at a later date and it plays
fine.  Sometimes the problem can be at the Netflix end or with the
    connection.

  • Netflix streaming video freezes but audio is ok...

When I'm watching Netflix streaming videos, Firefox video freezes. Audio is fine and I can continue hearing the video. Firefox is the only browser that does this. IE9 and Google Chrome plays without the video freezing. I love Firefox and would like to continue using it. I get tired of having to change browsers just to be able to watch streaming video. Thanks!!!

  • New Apple TV and Netflix streaming

    Hi,
I have an "legacy" Apple TV running with iTunes 8.x
and am interested in getting the new Apple TV to give me
Netflix streaming access. (So I would have 2 Apple TVs
    running in my media room).
So, question is -- do I need to upgrade iTunes to v10
to get Netflix streaming support on the new Apple TV?
Or do I need iTunes10 for the new Apple TV, regardless?
I've been hesitant to upgrade iTunes as I have had problems
with upgrades in the past (playlists disappearing, AppleTV disappearing,
etc.) I have also seen several postings with people having
issues with legacy Apple TV when upgrading to iTunes 10.
    Thanks,
    Kevin

Winston, you seem to be very knowledgable in the tv arena.
Maybe you can help me. My tv stopped connecting or is failing to connect to the itunes store. This occurred yesterday, for no apparent reason. There was absolutely no changes done on my end. I did query apple in regard to a movie that I rented that never appeared, but that was it.
All connectivity is working fine, I can podcast, listen to music, watch previews etc., I just cannot rent or download a movie, as it cannot connect to itunes store. I have deauthorised and reauthorised via itunes 10, and all seems OK, I can sync between itunes and my existing tv, but can no longer download movies or TV shows, as it seems to fail on handshake or authority or something...
Any leads would be greatly appreciated, as I have rented two movies, which I have been billed for, and they have been downloaded, just can't watch them...
    Thanks,
    Michael.

  • QT Streaming from Network Camera?

    Hi everyone!
We were wondering if we could do QT streaming via network cameras? We purchased a few AXIS 206W network cameras. We realised that they only produce MJPEG movies. Is it possible to do QT streaming with these cameras? Could you recommend some tools/documentations regarding this issue? Thank you.

As your trial has proved the start/stall playback means you've reached the bandwidth limits of your device. Lots of reasons why.

  • Netflix streaming has slowed again

Is anyone else experiencing slow Netflix streaming speeds?  Once Comcast and Netflix signed their peering agreement last year, I had no trouble streaming in HD.  For the past three weeks, none of my devices will stream at a quality higher than 50%.  The picture is so heavily pixelated that it's nearly unwatchable on a large screen.  I tried streaming through the app on my Sharp TV, the app on my Sony DVD player, a Kindle Fire, and on a PC.  None of them reach HD quality.  My connection tests at full 25/5 speed, so I'm wondering if the peering issues are popping up again.  I've tried everything I can think of, including different cables, bypassing the router, deactivating/reactivating the devices, resetting the TV, different DNS servers, and plugging into different ports on the router.  Both the TV and DVD player are connected by an ethernet cable, so wifi is not the issue.  I suspect Comcast is going to tell me to contact Netflix, and Netflix is going to tell me to contact Comcast.  It doesn't appear that the issue is temporary, or something that will eventually go away on its own.  If anyone has any ideas of what I can try next, it would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

Netflix still slows down from 9PM to 1AM every night.  I am on a wired 4K Netflix service through an app on my TV, and it runs full 2160 until evening, when the stream drops from 16M to 5M.  I've had the 4K Netflix app on my Sony since they started it in Feb 2014.  It is only in the last two or three weeks that this evening speed slow-down has happened. Comcast read me their press release about throttling, insisting it's not them.  Netflix says if it's in 4K, they deliver it to all ISPs at full quality, so it's not them.   I will say Comcast is looking into it, but every third rep I speak with, goes back to that throttling press release, so I have to start explaining all over again. Also, Comcast upgraded my Blast service from 50M to 75M, and even during the evening Netflix slowdown, the wired PC runs at 90M d/l.   Pic 1 is daytime speed, pic 2 is service during prime time.

  • No sound on some Netflix streaming on apple tv?

I sometimes, can't get audio on Netflix streaming using apple tv2. But, the audio comes through using my iPad 1. I'M using century links 2 wire router.
    Any help out there?

I didn't think Netflix was airplay compatible as it's natively on the ATV.
