Netfs causing slow boot, waiting for wifi?

Since adding netfs to the daemons in rc.conf my laptop takes about 30-40secs longer to startup. I realise netfs must be waiting for the network (WiFi) to connect but I have nfsd running as background (@) so I don't know how to fix this.
Actually I don't need the mounted NFS drive from boot so maybe I can run some script from rc.local to start nfs later and mount the drives?
My computer has a static IP setup in network client, could I fix the problem above by "hardwiring" the net config from rc.conf, making the WiFi connect faster?

nfsd is the nfs server - are you sure you need that running on your laptop?
You didn't say which network utility you're using, but afaik all of them have some do-this-after-connecting facility e.g. netcfg has PRE_UP/POST_UP/PRE_DOWN/POST_DOWN - I use that to make sure my nfs shares are mounted/unmounted after/before the network comes up/down.

So you started downloading it and it won't finish? Hold the home (circle) and lock (top of phone) buttons at the same time untill a power off slider comes up. Turn off your phone and when you turn it back on it will ask you for your password to restart the download. Click cancel and it should cancel the download.

  • Slow Boot Time for iMac

My imac now takes more than 1 minute to boot. Most of the time is spent on the gray screen. It used to be under 20 seconds.
I have tried disabling all login items as well as moving launch daemons in /Users/name/Library/LaunchAgents, /Library/LaunchAgents and /Library/LaunchDaemons. This did not help.
I have reset the PRAM and SMC, but no change either.
Finally, I removed all usb cables as well as the ethernet cable to see if this was creating the slow boot time, but again, no significant change in boot time.
I have used onyx to clean all caches, and verified the smart status as well as the structure of the volume. I also repaired permissions and executed maintenance scripts. No change.
I have done a verbose boot, and attached to this message is the generated log file. If anyone could take a look at this and let me know if there is anything wrong, I'd much appreciate it. If there's anything else I can try, do let me know as well.
    Thank you.

Sorry for my late reply, I didn't have access to the computer.
I tried a newly created auto-login user account, but it didn't make a difference. The time between restarting and a cold start is also about the same.
Anyway, you were right these messages are also in the console log with timestamps. Found that with a different command.
    Here is that new log:

  • Windows boot wait for RAID initialization

My windows startup is greatly slowed by my RAID!
I have 3 disks -- 2x Samsung SSD in RAID 0 through a Dell perc h330, and one Corsair SSD connected to the motherboard.
Windows is installed on the Corsair SSD. The RAID has no file on it currently.
Each time my machine boots, initialization of RAID costs roughly 40 secs. I disabled the RAID bios in MB CSM settings so that it doesn't show the black screen of initialization, but it doesn't save any time, for the 40 secs are added to the windows startup
screen i.e. the circle dots, walks 30+ cycles.
I suspect that is because windows is still waiting for the Raid to get ready before entering desktop. But that wastes a lot of time. Must windows wait for that piece of hardware to get ready before entering desktop? Why these two processes aren't parallel
when windows doesn't depend on the raid?
My question is, is there any way to bypass the wait time and boot into desktop first?
    Thanks

    Hi,
According to your description, you've already disabled the raid bios but still has a long boot time. We might take other factors into consideration such as other hardware components, applications, network, etc.

  • [SOLVED] Random kernel panics during boot (Waiting for UDev uevents..)

Update 2012-03-31: Workaround confirmed to work, see tenthirteen's post.
Update 2012-02-03: I've narrowed down the problem to the 3.x kernels. Downgrading to kernel26-2.6.38.5-1, with the other packages up-to-date (using nouveau instead of nvidia driver), solves the problem. Still, I still consider this a problem since it forces me to use an older kernel, so if anyone has any idea how to find the problem I would be very thankful!
When I came back home after the summer vacations I did a huge upgrade with pacman -Syu (of course I read the announcements before). This included linux (3.0.3-1) from kernel26 (2.6.38.5-1) and udev (167-2 -> 173-3). After this point, the boot process randomly fails from time to time; today I had to restart more than 20 times before my machine would boot successfully.
It always occurs during "Waiting for UDev uvents to be processed". Some of the errors are:
    1. The computer freezes when the message is shown (cursor stops to blink).
    2. Nothing happens for a long time, then Waiting for UDev uvents to be processed [ FAIL ]s.
    3. Short and long error messages that look similar to this guy's (except for the last line).
I greped for some of the error messages in /var/log but they don't seem to be logged, so the examples below are from my handwritten notes and thus not very complete (there are a lot of other error messages except these lines). It's also possible that there are some mistakes. Note that they're from different boots.
    BUG: Soft lockup - CPU#1 stuck for 23 s! [modprobe:256]
    BUG: Unable to handle kernel
    --[End ...]--
    note: udevd[225] exited with preempt_count 2
Kernel panic - not syncing: stack-protector: Kernel stack is corrupted in: c0147299

    Code: Bad EIP value.

    --[End ...]--
Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill the idle task!

BUG: Unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at 00000286
BUG: Unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at (null)
These errors are seemingly arbitrary which makes it very hard to find the problem. Sometimes it works without a single complaint, sometimes it says something about "No caching mode page present, Assuming drive cache: write through", and sometimes I get different errors (the examples above are only from today!). As you can imagine, it gets pretty annoying.
    So far I've tried to:
    * Use the fallback mode - nope.
    * Rerun mkinitcpio -p linux - nope.
    * Append noapic and nomodeset to the kernel in GRUB - nope.
    * Install and try kernel26-lts - seems to work, although I don't understand what other differences there are (e.g., it doesn't start X). At least this seems to suggest that it's not a hardware problem.
    * Unplug all USB devices before boot - sometimes works, sometimes not. Doesn't seem to be a direct connection.
    * Remove my custom settings in /etc/modprobe.d - nope.
    * A lot of other things I've forgotten.
Edit: I forgot to mention, once it's booted, the system works perfectly fine. No kernel panics etc. That's the second reason why I suspect it's not a hardware failure.
I've been thinking about trying to downgrade the kernel and udev, but with the renaming and all dependencies I'm not sure how to do that.
Since I've run out of ideas how to troubleshoot this issue, I would appreciate if I could get some suggestions here. I've search around and found similar posts but no solution that works for me.
Finally, here are some more information.

I've temporarily fixed the problem by doing the following:
    removed cryptsetup (1.3.1-2)
    removed lvm2 (2.02.88-1)
    removed mdadm (3.2.2-4)
    removed linux (3.0.6-2)

    upgraded net-tools (1.60.20110819cvs-1 -> 1.60-18)
    I also restored my old /etc/mkinitcpio.conf, /etc/inittab and /etc/rc.conf.
I'm still interested in a solution to the original problem. Is it a problem with my configuration, the new kernel, the udev version or something else?
The difference in inittab is just a -s option and the mkinitcpio.conf files are the same except for some comments. rc.conf has the biggest changes and is now (removed comments):

  • Windows 7 very slow logon, Waiting for the User Profile Service, winlogon event 6006

    Hello,
Every so often one of our Windows 7 clients which is not normally having any delay at logon will take a very long time to login. This may be 10 or 20 minutes or up to an hour in some cases.
Typically the event log will contain entries like
The winlogon notification subscriber <Profiles> took 572 second(s) to handle the notification event (Logon).
There is no further information available from Event Log Online Help, nor any additional detail as to why the logon event was so slow. During the delay the user will just see "Waiting for the User Profile Service" on their screen.
We first started seeing this problem with Windows Vista and if anything the situation has not improved since then. It has never happened with any of our Windows XP users.
We are currently planning a migration of computers to Windows 7 but stuff like this which has not been resolved in Windows over a 2 year period will stall that migration. The least improvement is to increase the event notification to give a lot more
information on why the user profile processing has stalled.

    Hi,
When did the issue begin to occur? Did it occur after installing certain application or applying certain policy?
To troubleshoot the issue, please perform the following step.
    1. Restart the machine in Safe Mode with Networking to check whether the system can login quicker.
    2. Type “gpedit.msc” in Search box and press Enter. Navigate to the following location:
    Computer Configuration->Administrative Templates->System->Logon
Please double click “Always wait for the network at computer startup and logon” policy and disable it.
    3. Perform a
Clean Boot to check the result.
    Thanks,
    Novak

  • Filter causes browser to wait for more data

Using the J2EE RI, I notice that under certain circumstances my filter causes IE 5.5 and Netscape 4.7 to spin, waiting for data which doesn't exist, after my page has been fully recieved. My filter simply replaces the HTTP output stream with it's own, chains the request, and then reads the length of the response before passing it through unmodified.
The odd thing is that one must call response.getWriter() before chaining, otherwise the waiting behavior occurs. Can anyone explain this, or suggest a tool to snoop on the response headers, or point me toward documentation of this behavior?
    Thanks,
    James

Hi, I've got the same problem!
If you have solved the problem, would you tell me how, please?

  • Cloned volume gets stuck at boot "Waiting for Network File System"

I've used "Carbon Copy Cloner" many times with success and no problems (v 2.3 , default settings, make destination bootable) as I migrated to larger drives or make backups in advance of a major OS upgrade.
Last time I was successful, I was at OS 10.3.5. I use 3rd drive to boot my Mac, then clone the one non-boot drive to the other. I do the disk repairs & permission repairs as the normal course of this process, before & after. I am now at 10.3.9. I am do this clone in prep to go to 10.4 so I have a good back in the event of later problems.
When I attempt to boot from the newly cloned partition, it goes fine on the boot process until it hangs at the "Waiting for Network File System" step and never gets past there. I've never had this happen before. I retired all the steps, even ran "Diskwarrier", but no change.
I am not trying to run from a remote or network drive, just a 2nd drive in my
G4 from which I have previously been able to boot (until this last clone attempt that is).
I googled the symptoms ""Waiting for Network File System"", found it to be common, but no real answers. Is this one of those annoying UNIX things? Any ideas how to fix / turn-off whatever is hanging the boot up? Thanks in advance!

    Hi Kool,
So there seems to be a "speed-bump" around 10.3.9. No wonder I have had the same results with a different tint. I went to Drive Genius to clone this one. Results with that were interesting.
If I did a [Device] clone, it would take and show at start with 'option' key... and work just like my internal with 3 accounts on it... login and proceed like it was internal. If I did a [Volume] clone, it would not show up at start with the 'option' key... I'd have to boot it from System Preferences > Start-up Drive. Once booted, it had no login screen so all the files were accessible. I took the clone of this 3 account PB and tried it on an iBook. Had to boot from System Preferences too, also, all the account were accessible from that machine... implying that anyone who had that drive could get past/into my files that would be secure on my computer, but not on the clone. If I took the [Device] clone and booted from the ibook at start with the option key, it would not get past the login screen... altho the mouse worked and I could click on the name, that was as far as it got, Froze.
So, I have figured, for safety, a [Device] clone is it, as long as the original computer lives. The safety features for login seem to be hardwired in the chip that the clone was made from (The iBook had 2 accounts but not my 3). If safety is not an issue, the [Volume] clone is fine... like moving to a newer OS on the same computer. It would seem from your experimentations that the situations with this 10.3.9 is just a hick-up and is solved in 10.4.3 with CCC v3...
Thanks for your info... I am thinking of going to Tiger, but I am so fond of this Panther...

  • Slow boot-up for i7?

I've had my i7 for a few weeks and while I love it I can't help but wonder why it seems to take about a minute to boot up. Everything seems to work just fine, but the boot-up seems to take longer than it should, especially for something that's supposed to be so fast. Just curious if anyone else has had this sort of issue with their i7.

    HI,
In order to assist you, could you please take a moment and click My Settings on the right side of this window and tell us which iMac you have and which Mac OS X it's running. That way we have your forum profile to go by for now and in the future. Thank you.
Open System Preferences/Accounts - Login Items. If you have any apps listed there to launch when you boot your iMac, delete them and see if it makes a difference.
Also, go to /Library/Startup Items. Move any files in the Startup Items folder to the Trash.
Boot from your install disk and run Disk Utility.
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
*(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)*
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
When you are finished with DU, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Manager.
Select your start up disk and click Restart
    Repair disk permissions...
Quit any open applications/programs. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.

  • HP G62 Battery causes slow boot - take battery out and boots normally - HP G62-340US Notebook

    All,
Very strange thing going on, and I've not seen it on these forums, so here I go.
Turn on laptop, the HP screen appears, and about 20 minutes later, Windows starts loading.
Turn off laptop, pull the battery, turn on the laptop, and Windows starts loading within 10 seconds (normal).
When the battery is in, EVERYTHING takes 15-20 minutes to start.  If I select F2 for settings, it takes that long.  If I hit F10 (or possibly F8), same delay.      If I take the battery out, it works perfectly.
So....I of course assume bad battery......but I've never seen this type of behavoir in ANY computer previously.
    Any suggestions?

  • Win XP slow boot problem solved

    Hi guys,
Just want to share my discovery re: slow boot.
For Win XP Pro users with 1 HDD:
    1.  Go to Device Manager
    2.  Select IDE Controller
    3.  Select Primary Channel (assuming HDD is connected to IDE1 which according to the MSI manual should be the case)
    4.  Click on the Advance Setting Tab
    5.  On Device 1, Select None for Device Type and click OK
    6.  Wait for a while because it takes some time for the window to close
And that's it !!!  I did tried the bootvis optimization first but only about 5 seconds were taken off from the start up.  I also took out the jumper in my WD HDD and even replaced my IDE cable.  Before my discovery, it took 2 mins to boot my PC.  Now it only takes 30 sec (i.e., from Win XP logo to desktop).
Hope it works for you guys.  Good Luck !!!

  • New ram slows boot time

I got a 4 GB mem kit from Crucial the other day and installed it into my 17" MBP. The computer runs fine once booted, but it takes twice as long to boot as it did on the original 2 GB. Roughly under a minute to at least a minute and a half. Should extra ram cause slower booting?

Yes; the MacBook Pro checks the installed RAM every time it is turned on, and the check takes longer with more RAM.

  • Slow startup time for JDeveloper 9i

The JDeveloper 9i release candidate takes a long time to startup. The pop-up window for method completion is also much slower than JBuilder 5.0. And I am using a 1.2 GHz P4 machine. Is it possible to speed up the startup time (maybe by making it not load certain libraries, such as XML editor, UML editor, etc.)?
    Thanks

This is a problem caused by references to files / URLs on
    remote systems which are slow.
In particular, having projects with Remote Files/URLs in them
    can cause slowness.
Same for Libraries - Having too many libraries or libraries with
remote links can slow down the system.
Look carefully at your project's Libraries and be sure you are
    not including everything
Also see your project and make sure the files are all available
    locally.
Let me know if this is the problem or not,

  • Cannot boot -- 10.6.7 update causes endless "waiting for DSMOS"

I have an iMac 10,1 purchased 10 months ago. I ran the 10.6.7 combo update today and after clicking 'restart', I only got the Apple logo with the spinning gear (grey screen). I booted into verbose mode and discovered that it is hanging at "Waiting for DSMOS..." indefinitely, or I should say for at least 2 hours. I reset PRAM and SMC, I repaired the disk and fixed permissions in Disk Utility, and I rebuilt volume using Disk Warrior. Nothing has changed.
I can boot into single user mode and I tried a few of the terminal commands that are supposed to fix this, but nothing worked. Specifically, I tried "chown root:admin /" but got an error that the filesystem was read-only.
I would love to hear if anyone has ideas!

Major problems occur for some users after every update. There are a number of possible causes for this, most not having anything directly to do with the update itself but instead with the state of the user's Mac before applying it. Discussions board users collectively have a pretty good track record for solving these problems, but mostly just for users willing to provide enough info for other users to get an idea of which possible causes might be involved.
Let's keep in touch for possible solutions--and if you see others with post-update problems we need to band together so they (Apple and some board experts) will take notice of this trend and find out what's wrong.
Please review the Help & Terms of Use link provided on every Discussions page. As it explains, Apple does not provide any official technical support in Discussions & the board moderators may or may not have time to forward anything about any issues discussed here to the Apple divisions that can do anything about it. Their principle job is to make sure posts abide by the ToU, & they are usually pretty busy doing that when updates are issued. (Updates historically generate a lot of posts that ignore or violate the ToU, like by <ahem> posting polls or petitions.)
If you want to get the attention of Apple about any issue related to an OS X update, use the form provided at http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html, & be sure to provide as much detail about the issue as you can.
If you are looking for solutions from either Apple or other users, the best way to get noticed is to provide clear, relevant details about the problem. "Similar problems" is just not enough to work with.
