Netgear DG834G V2 WIRELESS ADSL Router/newbie

Hello Everyone,
I have just signed up to eclipse to get broadband.
I have wanted to go wireless so I picked the
Netgear DG834G V2 WIRELESS ADSL Router
This needs to work with Both my PC (Medion/Intel Pentium 4E, 3200 MHz)
and my Mac (G4 400Mhz OSX) (at the moment they are connected by an ethernet lead).
Not knowing that Netgear Router doesnt support
Mac wirelessly but for the pc you can use
Netgear 802.11G WIRELESS USB Adapter – WG111
So my problem is what can I use with this
router so I can use it wirelessly with my Mac
At the netgear forums I was told I would have to get
a network adapter is this correct?
please help...

As Donald said, an AirPort Extreme card will not work in your G4 400 MHz.
If your G4 400 MHz is a very early model based on the Yikes! architecture, it does not have any internal slot.
If your G4 400 MHz is based on the Sawtooth architecture, it has a slot for the original AirPort card.
You can use the information in KB 58418, Power Mac G4: How to Differentiate Between Models to determine which Power Mac G4 you have.
If your Power Mac G4 doesn't have an internal slot or if you can't get an original AirPort card, I would suggest either a Mac compatible PCI wireless card or an Ethernet wireless adapter. The Ethernet wireless adapter does not require any drivers and therefore will work with any Ethernet device regardless of OS.
Unlike Donald I do not recommend any USB wireless adapters. These require drivers that must match the version of Mac OS that you are using. Frequently these drivers are incompatible with OS X and other software installed on the Mac. Many people have tried them and given up.

  • Airport Express & Netgear DG834G 54Mbps Wireless ADSL Modem Router

Could you offer any advice as to whether an Airport Express could be used as a range extender for an existing Netgear DG834G 54Mbps Wireless ADSL Modem Router setup as I really like the idea of Airtunes and sharing a USB printer. I gather that it is possible to use an Airport Express to extend the range of an Airport Extreme basestation setup but have not been successful in finding any info regarding the Netgear.
    Any info gratefully received !

mac-junkie, Welcome to the discussion area!
No it can not be used as a range extender.
But you can still use it for music and printer support. See KB 302153, AirPort Express: How to join an existing wireless network in client mode.

  • Connecting AE to non-apple wireless adsl router (Belkin)

    Hi,
I have an Wireless VoIP ADSL router (Belkin) that was provided by my ISP that I use for my home phone and Internet access. It is only a/b/g capable. I currently use it to wirelessly connect to the Internet and other computers on the wireless/wired network from my Macbook Pro. My Macbook Pro has my iTunes and music on it.
I am wondering if I can purchase the AE to plug in by my stereo and connect it wirelessly to the Belkin so that I can stream music to the stereo from the Macbook Pro via the Belkin (eg. Macbook -> Belkin -> AE). I would also like to use the Ethernet port on the AE by the stereo to connect a media center into the wireless network (the media center only has an ethernet port - no wireless built in).
If this won't work will I be able to just run the AE as a 2nd wireless AP and connect to it directly from the Macbook Pro when I want to play tunes through the AE? This would not be ideal as I would in theory only be able to connect to either the AE for music streaming or the Belkin for Internet access.
Can the Macbook connect to the Belkin via 802.11a or g for instance and the AE using 802.11n at the same time?
    Thanks,
    Graham

Yes, you should be able to do this with the newer 802.11n AirPort Express Base Station (AXn). Because you have a requirement to have the AXn's Ethernet port enabled, you would just need to reconfigure the AXn as a ProxySTA.
To activate ProxySTA, you must set up the Express to join a wireless network and then enable the Allow Ethernet Clients setting; both settings are located in the Wireless tab of AirPort Utility. The feature should work with any wireless network: a, b, g, or n; and 5GHz or 2.4GHz. (Note that the Express, which ships with firmware 7.3, must also be updated to firmware 7.3.1 for this feature to appear.)

  • Connecting Hardwire IP Phone to Wireless ADSL Router

I have a Mitel 5340 IP Phone that doesn't have wireless capability. I currently have a Westell 327W ADSL router with wireless capability. The router is in room X. The PC and IP Phone are in room Y. The PC works fine with wireless, but I can't connect the phone through the computer. How do I get wireless to my phone? Wondering if I can purchase a linksys router/AP that I can pick up the signal from my Westell and plug the phone into it. Or if I can purchase a CAT5 to USB adaptor to work with a wireless antenna to pick up signal.
    Thoughts?
    Thanks in advance!!

I am afraid, there is no wireless USB adapter that could make your IP Pone wireless, a Wireless Adapter is not just plug and play, in order to use any wireless adapter you have to install it's drivers...

  • Wireless adsl router recommendations...best range.

Im having the same horrible issue's everyone else is complaining about...had a new airport car & new logic board installed but still having issue's. I can't seem to get anymore than 10 meters away from the adsl router without the signal getting so low you can't surf. I've tried without the only 2 things I can think that would interfere (microwave & cordless phone) but it makes no difference.
I've tried a D-link G604T & a Belkin Mimo G+ and the D-link was better....anyone have good success with any other specific model??
Im going to take the unit to my place & test the range there & at work as well....just make sure it's not something funny at there place.
    Cheers
    KiwiMR2

Well I have the unit here at home with me & I can get half way down the drive (a good 20 metres) in windows & still get 500-1000 kpbs speed so that's fine. I can about 5 metres less using the Mac OS. Why might that be??
So it's probably the location of the router.
What I have experianced in the last 30 mins is randomly while Im using the mac side the screen goes completly blue for a second or two then bback to normal. Has only done it 2-3 times in the last 10m mins but prior to that it was none stop every 10 secs & I had to re-boot.

  • Netgear Wireless ADSL Router DG 834G

I am using the DG 834G router with a 700 Mhz iMac G4 Power PC Flat panel and a 12 " Powerbook 1.5 Ghz Power Pc G4 Lap Top. The system works well but I want to password protect my system. I have the instructions on how to pass word protect my system. I am stuck when the instructions tell me to select encryption strength. There are multiple selections and I do not know which one refers to my Macs.
    Any help appreciated
    Thanks
    Mike

Mike,I don't understand the term "64-bit driver" although....
If you were using the older WEP (Wired-Equivalent Privacy) security option you would have the choice of 64bit WEP(which is also known as 40bit due to it having 24bits overhead) or 128bit WEP encryption.
WPA (Wi-Fi Protected Access) is the easier (and Apple recommended - read this) option as it's more widely compatible - although I don't think it was implemented in OS 9 if any of your machines still use that.
The main thing is that whatever you configure needs to be the same throughout the setup. So set the router, iMac and PB all to WPA.
You can also set MAC blocking (that's Media Access Control not Macintosh!) on the router which means that you enter your computer's Airport/Ethernet hardware details and your router will only talk to hardware on the list.

  • Wireless ADSL router

    Hi.
Can anyone recommend a wireless router (not Netgear!) that works exceptionally well with Mac's.
I have a G5 iMac and a 'late 2008' MacBook. When I first got the MacBook it worked like a dream online... perfect internet connection and always top-speed. Since a few software updates (presumably) the MacBook has been getting worse and worse at connecting to the internet. I know it's not my internet connection causing the problem, my ISP has checked it on numerous occasions and everything is fine.
When I connect to the router using an ethernet cable it's works flawlessly 9.5 times out of 10. Wirelessly using Airport? I'm lucky if it works for more than 10 minutes at a time and when it does the internet connection CRAWLS. I should be getting 1.1mb a second (it has happened, I have seen it), but it starts at maybe 400k a second and slowly gets slower until it's about 20k a second then stops.
I have to restart both the router AND the laptop to get it working again.
I know these boards have been awash with people moaning how bad it all is, and I was pinning my hopes on 10.5.7 sorting the problem out but it hasn't.
I remember reading somewhere that someone swapped their Netgear router for another brand and it solved the problem... can someone who either has experienced these problems and solved them with a new router recommend something or maybe someone out there has never experienced this and has a happy internet life with their original hardware setup.
I can't see Apple fixing this and whilst I begrudge having to spend money to fix something that didn't used to happen I feel it is the only way to resolve this – a small outlay for a happy life is well worth it – I need my connection!!!
    Thanks.

    Hi again,
well, i don't know. it might be worth the effort, but it costs also quite a number of bugs ... And at the end the Apple devices should work just to the same specs as all others since they comply with some standard 811-blabla. --
Could you try with an AE which you can borrow from a friend? that might give you an impression of what the situation might become before you spend the money.
In my Airport express i can chose the channel number, and i can go to a different region of the spectrum (i think that is meant with channel). this certainly had an influence, when i set up my system (it runs now for 4 years, i think). I don't know whether this is possible for all wireless routers. You could also think in changing the location and/or orientation of your wireless modem or of the computers.
Another thing which i would try, probably before the others: go with the laptop close to the base station, and then increase the distance in some steps. Take enough time at each step to make sure you have stable conditions - or to make sure it is already fading away. Also make sure that there is no wall with iron between the base station and your computers..
Last not least: you see 10+ networks; there might be "hidden" ones as well. are they all connected to the same cabletree? (in my place it would be so). Then you can calculate that the maximum speed which YOU see, at best can be the providers speed divided by 10+ (or even 20). Well, i know, it is more complex than this, but many users on the same provider cable share this cable, and can suffer, when theire are too many users ...
    Hope this helps

  • Netgear DG834G and WPA

I am currently using a Netgear DG834G wireless ADSL router with WEP and a PowerBook G4. I am trying to use WPA instead of WEP but I am having no luck. I switch the router over to WPA-PSK and set a password, I then try and connect to it from the PB using WPA Personal but just get an error message on the PowerBook, 'error trying to connect to network'. Currently I have SSID turned off, the router has the latest software installed as does the PowerBook. Is it possible to use WPA with a Netgear DG834G and a Mac PB?
WEP is working with no problems.
    Phil

I encountered this same problem on my Intel Mac when I did the upgrade to 10.4.9. My Netgear router worked fine before the upgrade. I haven't seen anyone with this problem on a G4 before, but there have been lots of reports of problems with Intels. Are you really running 10.4.1 as it says in your footer?
Anyway, here is the only workaround I have found: Go into the router and disable password protection. Mine now works. I'm hoping that Apple will fix the problem, but apparently hasn't happened yet.

  • Netgear DG834G and Airport Express

    Hello,
Can anyone help me? I've just upgraded to a Netgear DG834g Wireless ADSL router. This is connected via ethernet to my G5, and my iBook and girlfriends Powerbook connect to it wirelessley.
Setting all this up took minutes. So far so good.
BUT, I cannot get this to talk to my Airport Express.
In the Netgear setup, I have added the AE to the 'Trusted' list (I used the MAC address on the side of the AE unit), but nothing will detect it.
I've tried using Airport Setup utility on both the iBook and the Powerbook but neither device can see it.
The amber light on the AE just flashes. I've even done a factory reset on it, but still no joy.
I've read through some posts on here and I can see that folks have managed to get these two devices talking to each other, but what I want to know is How? Have I missed something obvious?
    Please help....
BTW, I'm using OS X 10.4.2 on all machines.
    Many thanks

Panic over - the AE needed a hard reset, and re-configuring through Netgear set up, and AE setup utility.
    All working fine now.

  • Which wireless adsl modem router???

I am completely confused by the various products and descriptions out there. My current G4 iMac is wired into D-link ADSL modem and I now have a G4 iBook and a MacBook and a Dell Inspiron XP wireless laptop in the house.
I am looking for a wireless modem router or router, which will be compatible with all above and be very easy to set up without too much technical ability. I understand that the Apple Airport Extreme base station has been withdrawn and so I have been looking at something like Netgear DG834G.
I would also like my Epson 1520 printer to be connected via USB to the router, as it was available on the Apple base station.
    Can anyone help me.
    Thanks
    Desmond
    imac G4   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   D-Link ADSL modem

A simple solution if your D-Link has more than one LAN port is to get an Airport Express.
The G4 iMac and Airport Express would be connected to the LAN ports, you could then use your printer.

  • Connecting Netgear DG834G ADSL to AEBS question

    Hi
I have a Netgear DG834G ADSL wireless router and am considering getting the AEBS. I don't understand how these things work, but reading through the threads am I correct in thinking that
    1. I can connect the AEBS to the Netgear - how in bridged mode?
    2. I will be able to take advantage of the faster 802.11n speeds
Other than the increase wifi speed is there any advantage in having AEBS compared to what I already have? (Okay, given that with AEBS I can connect a printer and hard drive for eg)
    Thanks

Have just posted the following on Netgear's forum.
    Thanks for the reply but over a hot bath I decided to try the following before receiving your mail;
    1. Connect the airport express base station to the dg834n (using an ethernet cable!) . I only chose the express despite your advice because it is the neatest on the wall socket next to the netgear box and power adapter. Reset the express using the good old paper clip technique.
    2. Configure the airport express using Apple's Airport utility; on the internet tab - connect to the internet using ethernet, on the the Wireless tab - created a new network name (just in case identification might prove difficult later) and on the WDS tab, participate in a WDS (Wireless Distribution System).
    3. De-activate the wireless network at the dg834n using the IP address (http:///192.168.0.1)
    4. Select your new network on the remote, airport card equipped computer. Internet now works everywhere.
    5. Configure the other base stations, using Apple's Airport utility, to the new network address as remote or relay base stations.
But its not all good news; now it seems my printer is not designed to operate on a wireless network!!! (HP f380) Another hot bath will surely fix that
Its not ideal and wastes the dg834n's capability but its a fix. Hope this helps

  • Hi there, I have just bought an ipad4 but it will not connect to my internet. I have tried every suggestion going to no avail. My netgear DG834g router is fairly old , do you think this is the problem? I am at a loss now and very frustrated!

Hi there, I have just bought my first ipad4 and have spent all weekend trying to connect to the internet. I have tried all Apple suggestions to no avail
. My Netgear DG834g router is a few years old now. Do you think this may be the problem? Do they have compatibility issues after a while? My ipad upgrade is IOs 6. I am at a loss what else to do and needless to say extremely frustrated!
    Thanks.

First check that your router has its latest firmware.
    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

  • Wireless ADSL/ADSL2/2+ Modem Router - which one?

I've been a dedicated Mac man for many years, and my trusty old white dome shaped Airport sits on my shelf next to my Netgear DG814 ADSL modem - gathering dust . . . but alas it's time to turn off those flashing green lights for good very soon now - technology has finally passed them by . . . I need more speed!
So I'm looking for a new Wireless ADSL/ADSL2/2+ Modem Router.
Knowing very well that the world revolves around Microsoft, I'd be grateful for some input into which of these new techno-products available on the menagerie of computer sites (few mac specific one's though), actually work with OSX 10.6.2 and the newer Intel iMacs without too many problems?
I've been doing a bit of roaming around the web tonight, and saw this beauty, only to have it knocked back by several other forum posts:
    http://www.dlink.co.nz/Products.aspx?Sec=3&Sub1=18&Sub2=81&PID=294
Any comments, suggestions, or even passing of the time of day . . . . greatly appreciated!
Which one will do the job?
    I have:
A small network with 4 macs connected (all wireless). . . and of course, everyone needs access to the 2 USB printers, and the internet (via the built-in Firewall in the ADSL Modem).
Looking forward to your feedback and recommendations!
    Thankyou!
    (Have a good 'un!)

    Robert,
Thanks for the great link, the Draytek is not one I've come across before, hence my reason for making the post in the first place. I've been a bit out of the loop for the last few years, and I know ony too well how fast things move. So it's great to get some recommendations from others, to see what's currently available!
It certainly has a fantastic spec, much more than I currently need, but I'm looking for future proofing, so this would be ideal! Any idea if there would be any issues using this in New Zealand? I bought all my current gear out from the UK about 6 years ago, plugged in and it all worked flawlessly, so I'm hoping if I purchased one of these, & had it shipped out, I'd have the same uneventful experience?
Thanks for taking the time to post!
    Have a great day!
    Steve

  • Installed a wireless canon Pixma MX432 printer back in November for use with my Mac Book Air. All was working normally until this past week when I began getting a message, "printer not connected." What is going on? Netgear Wireless N Router seems to be ok

My new canon Pixma MX432 printer is not printing. It was printing fine until about ten days ago. I use a Netgear Wireless N router, which is also new. What do I need to do. I get a message when trying to print that says "printer not connected." In addition, my old Gateway laptop will still print fine apparently because it has a cable connection to the printer. Puzzled!

Have you tried rebooting the router? I would unplug it, wait a few seconds, then plug it back in. Be sure you know the password etc. if that doesn't work, try unplugging and rebooting the printer. Good luck!

  • Netgear AC6300 N1750 Wireless Router Compatibility

Just looking for some feedback on the new Netgear AC6300 N1750 Wireless Router, is this a Verizon FiOS Friendly Router?
I currently have my FiOS internet set up as Ethernet out of the ONT instead of MoCA this was done several years ago, all is running fine until my existing Netgear N750 WNDR4000 died, and am looking to upgrade to the new AC6300 by Netgear.
Any Feedback would be appreciated as I hve had inpecable service out of the existing Netgear router I am using and thought since it is on its last legs I would keep with the same Mfg and go with the newest Model which is the AC6300 N1750.  Netgear claims it is fully compatible with Verizon FiOS however I waould like to hear it from the Verizon side of the house as well if it is true.
    Thank you again in advance

The term "FiOS compatible" is a lot like smoke and mirrors.  Since you have no requirement for MoCA capability, any reasonable quality wireless router of recent vintage will do the job, and do it well.  Be advised that the dual band capability of this device won't be beneficial just yet.  Also the ability to load third party firmware such as TomatoUSB or DDWRT is pretty much standard on higher quality routers these days.
According to the NewEgg page, this particular device has all the bells and whistles, and looks very good.  It's very attractive to boot.  However it costs nearly $200, so it really should be above average.  If you don't mind spending this much, you'll be just fine, FiOS or otherwise.
