Netgear DG834GT with TC

Hi,
I'm waiting for my new MacBook to be delivered and in the meantime I have been thinking about my internet setup.
At the moment I have my Mac Mini connected directly to my ISPs Netgear DG834GT router as this will obviously give me a faster connection than using the Mini wireless. As I will be getting a MacBook I won't have it connected directly to my router so in theory I'm going to experience much slower internet connection as the router is only WiFi 'g' rated.
Now, would I benefit from getting myself a TC and connecting it to the router and then using the TC as a wireless access point for my MacBook as both are WiFi 'n' rated?
I will be using the MacBook in the same room as the router/TC 99% of the time.
All advice gratefully received.
Kind regards,
Mark.

Hmm...
Maybe it's just my Mac Mini then as I have done that test in the past as when I first got my Mac Mini I was connecting wirelessly which was OK, but once I switched to having the Mini connected directly to the router via ethernet my internet and download speeds were a lot faster.
I think my worry is that my previous experience using my Mini wirelessly and my internet connection being 'slow', I'm just concerned that I'll have the same issues when I get my new MacBook. I wasn't sure if perhaps it was to do with it only being 'g' certified and the Mini also.
My speed connected on my Mini just now was around 11 Mb/s and wirelessly it was around the same... weird! It was definitely slower wirelessly in the past! My mistake!
On that note then, will having the TC utilising the 'n' grade provide me with any benefits?

if i can ,is it easy to set up.
big jump for me moving from microsoft to apple ,trying to find out as much as i can ,

Yes, it has a NEXXTECH PS/2 adapter to UPS which I connect to my old laptop (emachines). Is it compatible with Apple?
If that Nexxtech adapter converts to USB, it probably will work fine for alpa and numerics.
What sometimes happens is a Mac does not recognize a keyboard, so it will ask you to type some specific characters, like z and m and . If you get lucky, it will recognize the layout and assign the keys correctly and all will work. Command and Option may take some playing around to get them straight. Some shortcut combinations may never work properly.

  • WRT610N with netgear DG834gt in modem only mode - HELP!!!

    Hi all,
As the title suggest, I need some help configuring the 610N to work with my previous modem / router DG834gt.
    So far I’ve tried:
Setting the DG834gt in modem only mode.  It connects to my ISP no problem.  I’ve then connected it to the internet port on the 610N and set it to PPOE.
I’ve set up the user name and password correctly and hit connect….Nothing.  It seem strange that I have to config the modem with the user / pass and the router, should I try to set it up as static or dynamic IP.
    What am I doing wrong???

Hi... thanks for the reply and sorry for the bad explanation.
I've set the connection type on  WRT610N as PPPoE.  The Netgear has a modem only mode accessed through a hidden menu ( http://vpncasestudy.com/download/DG/DG834_Tips100.pdf ) When in this mode it's apparently invisible.
There's no DHCP or wireless, it literally makes the connection and nothing else.
You have to add the login credentials for your ISP into the modem, the modem makes the connection - my problem is working out how to configure the 610N to connect through the modem, if at all possible.
Hope you can help - thanks.

  • Netgear DG834GT Wireless Conectivity Issues with MacBook Pro

Just purchased a Macbook Pro (my first MAC !!!) and I can't get it to connect wirelessley to my Netgear Router using any of the encryption options. I connect using WEP to my Windows Notebook and can connect the MAC using the cable but need to connect wirelessly . Help please in words of one sylable

Can it connect with WEP or WPA disabled? Don't worry a band of rogues will not descend on you for the 5 minutes you check that out. Diagnose if it works at all first. If you have then say so.
Try preceding the WEP key (which I presume is F6D3A0C2...etc.) with a $ sign.
Note WEP can be broken in under 5 minutes so you are using really poor security. WPA works on your mac and is so much more secure, and the pass phrase (e.g. my dog spot and cat harry have blue feet) are easy to remember and type in.

  • ADSL Broadband Settings for Netgear DG834GT (no In...

A few weeks ago my DG834GT had been working with BT ADSL (not Infinity) for a year before it died, so I bought another GT with the latest firmware, but I can't get Internet access.
I am currently using a HomeHub 2.0 which works fine, so I know my line is OK.
I reset to factory settings and everything works on the GT except Internet: wireless works, ethernet, admin panel etc.
With the DSL cable plugged in, no DSL/Internet light is illuminated, only the power, wireless and ethernet number. The router status page of the admin panel always shows "Connecting", with no IP and 0kbps Downstream and 0 Upstream. Obviously no web pages work either (can't connect to server message).
The ADSL settings that I've tried:
    Multiplexing: VC-BASED
    VPC/VCI: 0/38
    Network Type: PPPoA
    Login: [email protected]
    Password: BT
I signed in to the HomeHub admin panel to see what settings it uses, which is PPPoA with 0/38. The email address is [email protected] and the password shows as ********
Have also tried various email addresses and passwords:
    - [email protected]
    - my own personal @btinternet email and password
    - my name as in [email protected] and @btinternet.com
    - password left blank
    - password 0 (suggested by post on the forum)
Also tried PPPoE instead of PPPoA with the same various login details.
Also tried LLC-BASED instead of VC-BASED.
Also tried going through the wizard, which says it can't find the connection.
If anyone has a GT, or any Netgear router, could you please post your ADSL settings? Any other assistance would be appreciated too. My GT is Sky branded but I have flashed the firmware so it's now the same as an unlocked non-Sky one.
    Thanks

Perhaps the firmware image was for the wrong ADSL chip set, as its the front end hardware that is failing.
Remember that firmware also has a large part in defining the parameters of the physical hardware inside. Also, are you sure the router was working on Sky beforehand, especially as you bought it from someone else?
Its possible that it was damaged in some way?
I assume you have tried a different ADSL line cable, perhaps the one from your other Netgear?

  • Can't connect to Netgear router with WPA enabled (MBP)

I just received a Macbook pro today, everything is wonderful except wireless networking. When it first started up, it detected my wireless network, showed me the SSID, and asked for a password. I entered the password, and it failed to connect. I decided to try later and did the rest of the install.
I connected via cabled ethernet and downloaded all of the updates. For a machine that shipped from the Apple store (custom config) a few days ago, I was surprised at having 13 LARGE updates to download. Grabbed them all, including a Firmware update which required two reboots. One for everything else, and another for the firmware.
I tried again from sysprefs, and asked for the diagnostics. It asks me for my WEP key, and there is no option for WPA. I tried entered the WPA key anyway, despite only three WEP options showing up, and it still fails.
Going through the Airport 'tab' and editing the connection, I get an option for WPA Personal, Enterprise, WPA 2 Personal, and WPA2 Enterprise as well.
I tried using WPA Personal and WPA 2 Personal and entering the key which works on other notebooks, still no joy.

Which Netgear router do you have? I use the Netgear
RangeMax WPN824 and works well with WPA enabled but I
think it may have failed to work the first time.
WGT624 v2. Works fine with other wireless devices from a number of vendors, and is detected by the Mac, but I can't connect. I don't want to disable WPA if I can help it, I have a number of other systems configured for it as is, plus guests that come to visit.
but some how I had to delete the connection,
let airport find it again and re-enter the password
to get it to work. One of those things I kind of did
in the process of troubleshooting and can't remember
exactly how it was I did it
I'll try that and see if it helps. Thanks for following up.
UPDATE: Sure enough, I deleted the network and added it back in by manually specifying the SSID and password, and it works now. No idea why, but there it is... thank you very much.

  • Time Capsule & Netgear DG834GT in Modem Mode - Not working

I've just taken delivery of a 1TB Time Capsule. I've switched my existing Netgear DG384GT modem/router into modem only mode, so routing functionality is disabled. I just want to use the DG834GT as a simple ADSL modem, whilst utilising the features (DHCP, wireless etc) of the TC.
I've connected the two together, but I can't get a green light on the TC. The DG834GT definitely has an internet connection. I have the TC set to "Share a public IP address", but it doesn't appear to be able to get an ip address from the DG834GT. TCP/IP is set to use DHCP. I've tried everything, without success.
The only way I've managed to get the working together is by re-enabling DHCP and NAT in the DG834GT, and setting the TC to use bridge mode. This is not what I want to do, as my aging DG384GT has problems when too many wireless devices try to connect.
Am I missing something? How can I get the TC to obtain the ip address from the DG834GT? I don't want to have to buy an ADSL modem unless I really need to.
    Help!
    Thanks in advance

    Welcome to the discussions!
Can you clarify if you have DSL service there? In other words, when you first setup the Netgear to connect to your service, did you enter your user name and password into the device to connect to the internet?

  • Connecting wirelessly to Netgear DGN2000 - with WPA

I'm not the greatest of technical folk but can usually manage to sort stuff out. Here is the problem. I've recently had to upgrade from a Netgear DG834G to a DGN2000 router. With the old router, the TiBook could connect wirelessly (but I am pretty sure I was using WEP as could not get the WPA working).
Have just installed new router and have got my iPhone and Wii connected wirelessly using something called Mixed WPA-PSK + WPA2-PSK. However, the Tibook can see the network, when I try to connect I get a box saying The selected Airport network requires a password to join. Wireless security is WPA Personal password (and I cannot change this to anything else). When I input the password I get this message: There was an error joining the AirPort network 'xxxxxxx'
I have just read this regarding connecting to WPA and the Airport software
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2594
from which I gather I need version 3.3 or later. Looked to find what version I have and all I found was this in About this Mac/more info/airport card/wireless card firmware version 9.52
Where do I find what software I have?
Would really like to get this working.
    Thanks in advance, Kate

Are you saying that 802.11g cards were the first to support WPA?
Some disambiguation is needed. Speed is not the issue here, but WPA compatibility. I'm in the same boat. However, for about 6 months, my TiBook w/Original Airport Card did indeed connect using WPA (at 802.11b on a "b/g" network)...but no longer...others on these boards have had the same experience.

  • Leopard, Netgear router with printer server and Epson Aculaser C1100

    Hello!
After updating to Leopard (10.5.1) all my printers were deleted. I've two printers connected to a Netgear FWG114Pv2 wireless router. My HP Photosmart is connected via ethernet to the router. It was easy to reinstalled this one.
But I still can't get my Epson Aculaser C1100 back to work on my MacBook. The printer is connected with the USB port of the Netgear router. This setting worked fine before Leopard. On Tiger I only had to set up an IP printer with the IP of the router (no queue settings requiered) and to select the correct driver.
If I try this now, my printer doesn't respond. If I choose the default postscript printer driver the data signal on my printer blinks for a short time, then the printer stops. Two Windows machines can properly print on the Aculaser. Even my WinXp running with Parallels Desktop on my MacBook can print to the Aculaser.
If I connect the printer directly to the Mac and setup the printer, everthing works fine. I called the Apple support three weeks ago (1 h) with no result. We tried all advanced options in the printer settings and I send communication protocols to Apple (recorded with a little tool from them). Untill now I've no response.
I also tried setting up differnet drivers as discussed here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6382269&#6382269

  • Use of Netgear SC101t with IQ518a Touchsmart

    G'day
I've just purchased the model indicated in the title of this post, and I was wondering if anyone who owns a touchsmart owns a Netgear SC101t?
The reason I ask is because Z-scan and Netgear have not (and probably will not) gotten to making drivers for Vista 64-bit.
There are apparently work-arounds, such as creating a "virtual machine", but my ability to mess up new computers is to produgious for me to try and do this at this point in time.
So, my question is, has onyone out there managed to get their SC1012t working with a touch

just out of curiosity, what is z-scan? what does it do? and from what I can tell the SC101t is simply network storage...
if your wanting to sync your files that you have on your PC with those on the Network Storage, you can use Microsoft's free download of Sync Toy version 2,  awesome tool for file syncronization...

  • Need help replacing a Netgear router with my old used wrt54g from another house.

I had a WRT54G at my old house that was working great. Now the renters moved out and I got the router back. I have been having some issues with the netgear router Im using now so I would like to replace it with the Linksys. How do I do this? Do I need to hit the reset button? What do I set the settings at and how do I set up security so others can't access my network.

    Whoaw! Take it easy Ragnar....
It is easy to setup the router with your existing network. I'd like to know your ISP. In a way, you can have the router set up manually according to your ISP settings, whether it is cable or DSL.
For setting up the wireless to be secured, you can check this link.

  • Can't connect to netgear wifi with macbook pro

I have a Netgear N900 router and although I can find the signal I cannot connect to the wifi.  Each time I clicked on it, it would fail to connect and say to move closer to the router.  However the router has already been upgraded to make the signal strong enough to reach my room.  I have tried restarting the router and it has not worked.  I have gone into the router through my browser and reserved an IP address and changed my network settings on my computer to "using DHCP with manual address" and entered the reserved IP address.  I restarted my computer but now my macbook pro says that it is connected but I can't connect to the internet when i open a browser.  I'm not sure if I'm not reserving the IP address correctly or if there is another solution to this problem.  If anyone has encountered this problem and found a solution that would be amazing.  I have been trying for a month now to fix this.
