NETGEAR disaster, Help

So here is situation,
I just got my Tiscali 8Mb broadband, and my Netgear wpn824v2 router, D-link modem, everything is connected via ethernet, but it,s deadly slow.
So in preferences pane I entered ISP primary DNS server no, I did configuration and Its get a bit faster, and I was able to use at least safari,
so I decide to download some stuff , and launched application- result was disaster, I straight away lost connection with ISP and even when I quit application, I couldn't launch safari.
problem was solved just when I did full restarting of router, but I still can't use downloading application ;((
Can u mac pro's help me, please?

I'm not familiar with Menu Meters but from what you say I'm sure it measures burst speeds.
2.4Mb and 0.4Mb sound fine. You are paying for "Up to 8Mb (depandant on line speed)" you are not paying for "8Mb" (check the small print).
Safari is quite renounced as a slow browser. I'd advise trying the same connection using Firefox. Within Safari using the Empty Cache command on the Safari Menu often improves Safari performance.

It sounds to me like your router is setup fine on your side (computers), but needs something for the outside world (internet). What kind of broadband connection are you using? DSL?
I know our DSL requires a login and password, as well as a PPPoE setting. If you jump on the interal webpage of the router, by opening up Safari and typing in the router's IP address, you can config the router. On our Linksys, there is a drop down menu where I can change it to PPPoE and there is also a place where I can type our login and password. If these aren't done, our internal network functions, but no one can get out. Hope this helps.

Lion Server upgrade disaster, help restoring Dovecot.

Hi,
I tried to upgrade the Snow Leopard Server running in my Mac Mini to Lion Server, it was a complete disaster.
I made a Carbon Copy Clone of the hard drive as my backup before performing the upgrade, bottom line is that I went back and re-installed Snow Leopard Server and glad that it's all back up and running as before. The only thing left for me to do is to restore all the emails that was on the backup drive to the main drive.
I tried googling this and didn't get any straight forward answer, how do I restore all the emails from the backup drive to the main drive?
Any help would be highly appreciated.

Degraded Upload Speed With Netgear R6300 - Help Pl...

Hi,
I changed my router for BT Infinity from the Home Hub 3 to a Netgear R6300 and have suffered a degradation of the upload speed.
Previously with the BT Home Hub I was getting 16 mbps upload but after changing to the Netgear R6300 I am getting 12 mbps upload. Changing back to the BT Home Hub 3 restores the upload speed to 16mbps.
There was no degradation of the download speed with both the BT Home Hub 3 and the Netgear R6300 giving 74mbps.
To setup the Netgear R6300, I allowed the Netgear Genie to detect the internet and offer me the WAN type and login options. It automatically selected WAN Type of PPPoE and I then entered the usual login details of
UserName = [email protected]
Password = BT
After selecting these options and exiting the Netgear Geniie to go back to the internet it was all working but with the degraded upload speed.
Is there something I need to manually configure in the router to get the maximum upload speed for my connection?
Any help most appreciated.

KDE4 Panel Disaster - Help

Hey guys ... back to Arch linux again after a small break with Ubuntu for a few months. I always come back to Arch and love it. Also moving from Gnome back to KDE and I am using KDE4 from testing.
I need some help with my KDE4 panel. I deleted the panel. Then added the panel back but have 2 problems.
1. I lost the widget which adds a block for each open application/window. I cannot find the widget to add it back. I need to see which applications/windows are open! Ahh.
2. I want some quicklaunch icons on the bar. I added Quicklaunch but now have 3 icons spaced widely apart on the panel. How do I move the icons, shrink the quicklaunch widget in the panel and customise to new quicklaunch apps?

You can move the widgets when you press the cashew on the right side of the panel (when the widgets are unlocked). Adding icons (and removing them) works with a right click on the widget (=one of the existing icons).
I don't think limiting the widget in its size is possible, but you always can shrink the panel.

IT 7.6 upgrade disaster -- HELP!!

my wife bought an iphone today and i had to upgrade from 7.x to 7.6 in order to activate. when doing so, i tried synching the phone with some of my tunes/podcasts and an error box popped up saying i needed 63 gigs more space! funny because my entire library is 23.1 gigs....when i went back to the library screen in the upgraded version of itunes, at the bottom, it says i have 4300 songs that comprise 551.84 GIGABYTES of space...and when i tried to synch my ipod it gives me another error saying it needs a ga-jillion more gigabytes to synch.....what in the world is going on? anyone? i checked my itunes library folder and it says 23.1 gigabytes. have i done something wrong?
any help you may have would be greatly appreciated.....thanks in advance and sorry if this is some ridiculously simple thing i've done!!!!!

You could also try holding down the Shift key in Windows when launching iTunes. In the resulting dialogue you will get the option to create a new library or navigate to an existing one. The default location for your iTunes library is in \Documents and Settings\Username\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\. Look in there and see if you have more than one library file (they have the extension .itl) If you have more than one try opening them in turn, you may find your original library is still intact: How to open an alternate iTunes Library file

3 blinking disaster help!I

hey guys ive been reading alot on these forums about the 2nd gen ipod blinking three times in orange once connected to the PC and not being recognized by either the USB or the ITUNES program well i have the same problem now! in my case i was able to load songs to almost 1G and play the shuffle for like a week on my friends computer then when i connected it to mine initially it was recognized and i was asked to " erase and sync" but i kept cancelling..on the third time i connected it it just blinked three times and is not even recognized as an external harddrive and is not recognized in ITUNES at all! i tested it on my laptop and its still being recognized so im guessin there is no problem with the cable......can anyone please help me? ive tried the 5 R's a billion times and reinstalled itunes a billion times still nothign!!!! HHELP!!!!!!!!!

M77A-GD65 BIOS DISASTER, HELP!!!!!!!!

Ok here is whats going on.
I saw there was a bios update available in LU5 today, version 10.10 and it said it helps recognize more memory, so i figured i would put that in because i had some issue with some memory that i bought and ended up having to go to a different brand.
After the bios update the system wouldnt boot to the correct drive. I have and SSD and a HD in this system. The SSD shows up in the list in the bios but when i go to the boot options its not on the list of selectable sources so i cannot set it to boot from that drive anymore.
However!! If i tap F11 at boot the SSD is in that list and i can select it and the system boots right up! So why cant i get the bios to boot from the SSD drive by default anymore and why won't it show up in the list of bootable devices it the boot setup screen?
I have been trying for HOURS to get the bios reverted back to 10.8 but nothing works. I tried M-Flash in the bios setup and it says media not found, even though the USB thumb drive is formatted to FAT and the Bios file, version 10.8 is on it. I have tried to boot from the thumb drive, it gives me this really weird screen where it says something like hit enter to boot or numbers or something to default? It shows a line where the numbers are counting down, 987654321, then it says ctrl alt delete to reboot. I have pressed enter, numbers, you name it, i cant get it to boot to a prompt to use the flash utility from the version 10.8 zip file no matter what i do.
I also tried using the utility in Click Bios II but that says file error or something like that.
How in the heck do i get it set back to the correct boot drive or get the damn bios rolled back?

IDE mode is set to ACHI
Its correct because i can tap F11 and select my SSD from that list and it boots right up.
Problem is when i go into the boot options of the bios the SSD drive is not available for selection.
Any more ideas? I tried to clear it also, no change, still not selectable as a boot device in the bios, but i can select it via F11 yet.
I am on the computer right now, but i have to tap F11 then manually select the SSD drive every boot to get it running.

Live Recording DISASTER - help, advice, moral support...

I've been using my Powerbook and Firepods to do 16ch live recordings for the past 4 months. The first 20 times or so were for friends' bands or just practice, all for free. Last night was the first paying gig, and it also happened to be the first time the recording didn't come out right. Scattered throughout the tracks for all 3 bands are periods of audio distortion/warping/f*ed up useless garbage. Sometimes its only on 1 track, sometimes all of them. It always happens in a section, there do not seem to be any random momentary blips.
This is very similar to a problem i had momentarily in the studio that i recently posted about. I bought a SPDIF cable to physically connect the two firepods for better syncing, and I'm using the aggregate device for a full 16 channels. I thought i had the problem solved, we finished tracking with no problems. My environment is trimmed down to only the necessary tracks, and as far as I can tell, nothing else was different than all of the previous successful attempts. My 160 gb fw hd was 50% full.
Up to this point, the one night that really counted, I was 100% confident in my rig. now I have no idea what to do, or what to tell the bands. two of them also hired videographers for a DVD with our audio. i've worked hard to get this kind of gig, and then this. and ultimately, its my fault. yeah, so thats that. if you've made it this far, thanks for reading my venting.
Powerbook G4 1.67 Mac OS X (10.4.4) 2 gigs RAM, 2 Presonus Firepods, LaCie 160 gb FW 800

I do not have final cut pro. i haven't messed around with the files much yet, we had a live sound gig tonight. (tested recording, and it messed up again, something must be wrong still) one thing i tried on a kick drum track was eq'ing out all of the highs, which got rid of most of the mess. but on a few vocal parts, nothing could be done short of overdubbing. i guess this could be my learning experience for salvaging recordings.
we've thrown out the idea of a md or dat board mix before, and we'll definitely do it from now on. are there better ways? i really love doing this, and I know the machine can do it, i just don't know what changed.

Reinstall Disaster Help

Bought a used ibook g4 PowerPC w/ 256 MB, 800Mhz processor, 30 GB HD. and did a complete system reinstall with OS 10.4 (Tiger). It took about a dozen tries for the installation to work and the systsem never started up right or on the first try. I figured this was becuase it needed original ibook OS software so I bought that (Panther)and did another 30 attempted reinstalls. Now I can't get it to boot at all! It tells me installations was "successful" but when on restart after installation I get a variety of non-responses. Sometimes just a gray screen with a gear, sometimes a blue screen with a spinning rainbow wheel, a few times I've actually gotten the OS Window and blue car but it stalls during the very last "login" function. Is all of this a memory issue. The harddrive seemed to be fine when the OS was running.
Any ideas...I don't want to spend any more money on this!

Do you have an up-to-date backup of your computer or at least of your Users Folder?
Although your RAM barely meets the minimum system requirements for Tiger you really should have more RAM. If you can't max it out to 1.12 GB at this time, I suggest that you have at least 512 MB.
ali brown has linked images of the correct install disks you need. As he has noted Computer specific or upgrade versions should be avoided since they are optimized for the computer to which they are specific and will therefore, very likely, cause problems during or after installation. On the legal side, it may be a violation of the Software License Agreement which statesThis License allows you to install and use one copy of the Apple Software on a single computer at a time. This License does not allow the Apple Software to exist on more than one computer at a time...
At this point, to see if you can move off the dead you are in I suggest that you firstReset PRAM
1. Shut down the computer.
2. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
3. Turn on the computer.
4. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
5. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the third time.
6. Release the keys and immediately try starting up in Safe Mode by beginning from a cold start, hit the Power button and hold down the Shift key immdeiately after the chime. If you are able to boot successfully, login, and empty Trash. Then Repair Disk Permissions
While booted from your internal HDD
Go to (Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left column and First Aid in main column.
Click Repair Disk Permissions at bottom left.
Then restart and login normally.
If this does not work I suggest that you make sure you have the right disks as specified by ali brown, then make sure you have a good backup of anything you can't afford to lose, and then do a complete reformat, zero all data and re-install.
Please do not hesitate to post back with further questions/comments or an update on your progress.

Firewire not recognized, the "cure" done at Apple Store, DISASTER, HELP!

Took my dual 2.5 to the Apple Store to "cure" the non-recognition of the firewire. They clear the Pram and other easy steps, restart the computer (I am packing my stuff as they seemed to think I was "cured") then, blinking displays and complete failure. They are doing an evaluation but they are saying things like: motherboard, power supply, etc., HOW CAN THIS HAPPEN! If they were doing this at the Store, was it their fault? I am waiting on the triage. Any one with such a situation which started as a firwire failure?

I had fans of a Powerbook G4 turn into a logicboard issue. The computer is a fairly tightly integrated unit. The firewire ports are saudered onto the logicboard. So it is entirely possible that in an effort to fix the firewire ports they noticed something wrong with the circuitry to the ports on the logicboard.
Power supply affects Firewire ports in that Firewire ports are able to supply power to Firewire devices that don't have their own power and understand signals for bus power. If the power manager is having issues, that could affect the ability of Firewire ports to supply power.
A flakey power supply may create such issues that seem intermittent and grow with frequency as problems.
So don't worry, so far nothing unexpected has happened at the store.
Some things to think about, if they do end up determining the power supply is the issue, check to make sure that you have a good surge protector, and are not defeating the purpose of the ground plug, and use steady power on the machine. If away from the machine for longer than a day, or you have thunderstorms in the forecast, I'd shut down and unplug the machine. A surge from a direct lightning strike can't be protected against by any surge protector, and can create power supply issues. Also ask an electrician to find out whether or not your power port that you are plugging the computer into is able to supply the power required of the machine.

Disaster, help... Server down, won't boot from the HD, Quesion mark flashin

We have a Tiger Xserve. On top of that one, the IT mounted out second server, Leopard Box, while working on the latter, I was pulling out one of the hot swappable drive units out. I have accidentally and VERY GENTLY touched a main drive on the Tiger (below) and the little drive handle popped out. The blue light on the drive turned off. I thought I just killed that box by diconnecting the live drive, but to my relief it was just a spring loaded handle. However the light turned off, as I said. I pushed it back in and tested the server from my Macbook Pro. It seemed OK for a second, and then I discovered some sites were down. So I went into the Terminal, logged it, tried to become su, and it would throw an error. Could not do much via SSH. Tried to VNC to the box and no luck either. So I went and did a hard shut down. Rebooted and blue screen appears for a minute, then question mark starts flashing. Then I tried removing that main drive and reinserting it and no luck, same thing! To my surprise, the drive was actually locked using a key, so I had to unlock it to remove it.
I beg advice, what could have happened? I only gently released the handle, did not touch the actual hard drive. Why would it crash and not reboot again?
I have tried a single user Command S and no luck either. Just does nothing. Tried boot + holding option key and also, no drive choices appear on the screen. Tomorrow we will attempt to use installation CD.
But what could be wrong, so wrong that the Single user boot would not even work. Can the drive be fried just by releasing the handle??? The drive so in and connected all the time, it required me to unlock it to actually remove it.

didn't get that done, and in the process managed to erase all the songs he already had on his nano!
Plus, it seems to want to put my entire library on the nano, not just the songs I selected and purchased for it...

No Good Deed Goes Unpunished!! The iPod will only sync to one computer. if you sync it to another then everything that was on it will be erased.
The best thing to do is sync it to your friends computer. Once that's done, copy the songs from your computer that you want him to have. Then resync his iPod to his computer and he'll have the music you gave to him.

Disaster - Help

I am currently haing to reformat and reload my iMac. When I plug mu iPod back in for the first time, will it sync all of the content back into iTunes on the iMac or will all the content be lost?

Content can only be moved from the computer to the ipod for theft reasons. There are some programs out there that will allow you to move songs from the ipod to your computer. Try searching these forums.

Mac OSX 10.5.8 is out! Anyone finally see if Airport got fixed?

Well as you know, it ain't no secret that airport is krap when it comes to MBP's and wireless. Anyone FINALLY see an improvement with 10.5.8?
Also, any problems after the install like the ones from before on 10.5.7? The macs version of the blue screen of death? Link below,

So has anyone seen an improvement with airport and the disconnects? Or is Apple gonna wait on fixing this age old 'issue' till OSX 10.6 comes out? (Or maybe even beyond)
Lastly, anyone know if it breaks your tethering with your iphone 3g? (don't wanna upgrade if it does cause I like tethering)

Oh I agree, it must be very frustrating for those suffering duff Airport connections.
I would encourage anyone who is suffering this problem to thoroughly check any third party software on their Mac, and the hardware as well.
I had a period where my Airport connection seemed to grind to a halt, but connect with a cable and all was fine. In the end I found changing the channel used by my Netgear router helped enormously. Then my neighbor moved away taking his wireless router with him all my problems disappeared normality returned and I went back to channel 11. In someway his router had been the cause of my troubles. Doing some checking and my troubles started when he got his new router and went when he moved house a few weeks later.
Shortly after that I thought the problem had come back but it turned out to be a problem with my ISP and DNS. Again this resulted in very slow access the first time you went to a domain but then was OK while you stayed on that domain. Go to another domain and it was slow again.
